A long lost twin-sister thing could be really good if done well, and since this is a kids show, it wouldn't be that out of place and it does make sense, since Twilight and Starlight are quite similar in many regards. Also could be an explanation for why Starlight can probably match Twilight in most aspects of magic, without leaving viewers to wonder how Starlight's so strong despite being mostly self-taught. As Twilight's twin, it would make sense that Starlight is that powerful.
It also could lead to further plots of jealousy, since Starlight would be jealous that she isn't an alicorn. If done well, it can lead to some spectacular episodes, but if not done so well, it would just conflict a lot with the teacher-student relationship that they have.
I do agree that (Twilight recognising Sunburst) would have been able to throw Starlight off completely. She was already hesitant, so this would have been enough to make Starlight change her mind about changing time to thwart Twilight's friendship. I did feel that Starlight changed her mind quite suddenly in the actual episode, to the point that it felt like that ending was a bit rushed. Having Twilight mention that she knew Sunburst probably would have been a a much better trigger for Starlight to reconsider.

@Princess of Hearts ❤️❤️ I've always had a theory/idea that Starlight is part of Starswirl the Bearded's family. Since she was able to do spells that took a lot of practice for some to be just child's play when she uses it. That, and it shows that she was unable to at first during her explanation of her relationship with Sunburst in the season 6 premiere. That, and she took a spell that would only send you a week back to even a longer amount of time. Being able to do that would take a lot of powerful magic, or if she was a descendant of Starswirl. It would make sense on how she was able to show the error of his ways so that the past wouldn't repeat itself.
Now that you mention it, I can see how the ending was rushed way too quickly when she changed her mind. Twilight did bring up a good point, but it felt out of nowhere. Granted, I'm glad they had Starlight go and meet the others in the village during the season 6 finale, but I still wish they could have done that in the earlier episodes. Since we saw her apologize at the very end of season 5, but it felt weird when she wasn't there for Sugar Belle's wedding. Since it felt like Star was friends with Sugar Belle and the others.

@Dynamo PadThe problem is that I'm pretty sure that Starswirl never had any descendants. He never mentioned any kids or anything, so I just assumed that he never had any. The fact that she was unable to do magic that well as a child is another similarity to Twilight, since Twilight was never a natural at magic when she was a filly herself. Even in her entrance exam, Twilight struggled. Just adds more evidence to the lost twin theory
.
As for a time spell, I was suprised myself that she managed to make Starswirl's spell much stronger. It showed that she was super powerful but it is something that Twilight probably could have done herself. It's just something that Twilight never had the intent of doing, so I would say that their power levels are pretty much equal.
Some people might say that since Twilight's an alicorn, she should be way more powerful. But that's simply not true. Celestia and Luna are only so powerful because of their age and experience, and they still get captured and beaten pretty badly through out the show despite their immense power. Cadance is an alicorn but I wouldn't place here anywhere near the power levels of Twilight or Starlight. I'm pretty sure that becoming an alicorn really only empowers you to do with what you represent. For example, for Cadance, her love magic is really strong but the rest of her magic is similar to normal unicorns. This also kind of holds for the royal sisters, since Starswirl can do as powerful spells as both of them, yet he couldn't raise the moon or sun without help from other unicorns.
That isn't to say that Twilight won't become as powerful as the sisters. As time goes on, Twilight would become more powerful, but so will Starlight. Therfore, being an alicorn doesn't increase her power above starlight's. But wait, despite what people say, I'm pretty sure that Twilight would outlive her friends and probably would outlive Starlight (though I wouldn't put it past Starlight to try and find a de-ageing spell), so Twilight would be able to surpass Starlight eventually.
What I'm trying to say is that it makes sense that Starlight can be as powerful as Twilight in present, so she might not necessarily be a decendant of Starswirl.
As for not going to the village for Sugar Belle's wedding, I guess that Starlight felt like the villagers didn't want her to be there eventhough they accepted her apology. She probably thought it was too soon to go back to the bad memories that her old town held.
