  1. Episode 9 - Bridle Gossip EPISODE SUMMARY Ah its the racism episode. Had to happen at some point. Yeah its pretty obvious from the beginning what the moral is going to be and it doesn't spend much time doing much else which makes this episode a bit boring. Anyways, there is a Zebra in town and everyone is afraid of them as they think she is an evil witch. Twilight doesn't believe it until they chase her into the Everfree forest to find Applebloom (applejack's little sister) which followed her. They run into a blue flower and the Zebra warns them to stay back. They all wake up with silly problems related to each of them. They think its a curse and before they can decide what to do they find Applebloom is missing again so they go back to the forest to find the Zebras hut. They crash into it and accuse her of making a stew to cook Applebloom and cursing them all. Turns out they were all just affected by the blue plant they stood in and the Zebra called Zecora was just making a herbal remedy. They learn not to judge a book by it's cover. For Twilight literally as she missed a cure which was in a book she didn't want to read due to the title. MY THOUGHTS I hate how Zecora rhymes everything she says. I'm sorry but its just stupid and ironically I think a bit insensitive to the culture she is supposed to represent. I mean maybe it would be fine if she did it at the start but then spoke normally to them for the reveal but when she always does it, it becomes a part of her which is just silly and unnecessary in my opinion. I do like how they wrote this story tho and her design and culture is represented otherwise. It's not often we get this culture shown in a good light as it is often used for kids movie villains like Dr Ficilier from Disney's Princess and the Frog. This episode is also the first to introduce us to Applebloom, Applejack's little sister. She is fine in this episode but her role could have been done by another pony without much issue so she kinda feels unnecessary here. I'm not much of a fan of kid characters and Applebloom is pretty bog standard as far as cartoon kids go so she doesn't interest me much. Pinkie is annoying in this episode. Literally to the point were she is directly annoying her friends to so yeah I obviously don't like her here and I don't like her song here much either as much as her previous ones. Her involvement just feels kinda rushed and again unnecessary for the story. She feels like she is just there because she is popular and nothing else. Also I don't get why Rainbow doesn't just walk instead of flying this whole episode. I like how Twilight is skeptical but starts to change her mind when a bunch of things seem to lead to Zecora looking evil by chance. That is in character for her and makes a lot of sense and it shows how friends can influence your views even if they are wrong which is an important thing for a show like this to teach and I kinda wish this part was focused on a bit more. A large part of this episode was spent on jokes but I didn't really like them in this episode but I think that's more a me thing. There is one problem with this episode that might be a bit dangerous to kids. The fact Applebloom follows Zecora to a dangerous place despite what everyone told her to do and she turns out to be fine and everyone else is wrong is kinda bad. They should at least have mentioned how wrong it was for Applebloom to go in such a dangerous place without supervision and following a stranger at some point even after Zecora turned out ok coz it can't be good to teach kids to just talk to total strangers as they might be friends you just don't know about. stranger danger is a thing people. for goodness sake. Also Spike is pointless in this episode and just laughs in their face when they are apparently cursed. Thanks Spike. You jerk. Overall, a good moral and done pretty well for the most part especially compared to how most kids shows do this moral. Not very funny and annoying in some places tho and really should have a bit about stranger danger.
  2. EPISODE SUMMARY There is a big storm so Rarity and Applejack get trapped in Twilight's tree house for the night despite having a squabble not too long beforehand. Twilight wants to turn it into a fun sleepover but Rarity and Applejack can't stop having petty arguments at every opportunity. Applejack carelessly pulls a tree top into Twilight's house and Rarity and Applejack have to work together to fix the problem. They end up getting along despite their differences. Twilight notes that ponies which are very different can get along if you embrace the differences you have instead of fighting over them. MY THOUGHTS It feels like the moral was kinda secondary in this one and was another episode more focused on silly antics and jokes about them arguing the whole episode. There are a few good moments here but mostly it just comes off as uncomfortable to watch for me. I mean who wants to watch friends argue a lot and make their other friend sad? I just felt bad for Twilight most of the time and didn't really find it funny. That might be a more personal thing tho as I don't tend to like conflict situations like this as I have been in them A LOT before. It is a truly horrible being caught in an argument and toxic environment you can do nothing about constantly. I think maybe if the ending was less rushed and was warmer and sweeter it would have made up for it but because they spent most of the episode about the arguing the resolve doesn't feel quite warranted and instead feels forced to me. What's worse is they joke about hating each other earlier afterwards which is just awkward and cliche and not charming. I hate that trope. It feels to me like the team felt the need to make this episode to shut fans up coz they were aware these personality types would never actually get on so they had to make an explanation for why they would. At least Spike isn't here to ruin this episode. Also Twilight is kinda written weird in this episode. She is shown as being so obsessed with her sleepover idea that she doesn't see their arguing for most of the episode and she never even directly talks about it until the end. This doesn't feel right to me as we have seen before in this show that Twilight is very prone to wanting to fix issues directly and quickly so its out of character for her to not at least try to talk to them about it more often. She sorta comes off as more socially awkward here as if she doesn't know what to do in this situation which is ridiculous coz that is literally her job and she has clearly shown being better than this earlier. I don't know maybe its just me on that one. Overall, I appreciate what they were trying to do but it doesn't feel well executed and ends up feeling more uncomfortable than anything and the resolve is too rushed. Twilight feels wrong in this episode. I didn't enjoy this one which I'm aware may be an unpopular opinion.
  3. Episode 7 - Dragonshy EPISODE SUMMARY A dragon has taken a nap in a nearby mountain and is snoring smoke all over ponyville. It is up the all the mane six ponies to stop it. Fluttershy isn't keen as she is scared of Dragons and hesitates and causes issues the whole way although not intentionally. Rainbow doubts her usefulness to the mission. Then they get to the top but none of them can convince the dragon to leave. The dragon gets angry and attacks the mane six making Fluttershy mad. She finally finds her courage and yells at the dragon so it leaves. Twilight says she has learned to never doubt your friends as they can come through for you in the end. MY THOUGHTS This episode doesn't have much of a moral to it but it makes for it in fun content. The awkward humour and slapstick are all pretty good in this one and it makes for an interesting and fun episode in general whether you like the story or not. I also can relate to twilight being sure of fluttershys abilities and rainbow being doubtful. it is in character and makes sense. also fluttershy being scared of the dragon but facing it when her friends are threatened doesn't feel out of place either. One minor issue I have in this one is how pointless the involvement of pretty much everyone other than fluttershy twilight and rainbow are in this episode. applejack carries fluttershy up when she is too scared to start climbing the mountain but anypony could do that for the story (probably rainbow). Pinkie sings a song of encouragement which is nice I guess but not needed and rarity pretty much does nothing in this episode story wise except be there I guess and she actually makes things worse. What did they think she could do anyway? Nevertheless, their interactions are kinda cute and help to pad out the episode a bit I guess. The only thing that bothers me about this episode is the ending joke. Rainbow gets scared by Pinkie making a dragon sound despite this being out of character for rainbow as she showed no signs of being scared up to this point and in fact showed the opposite so this makes no sense. Then Fluttershy boasts on rainbow saying how she is braver than her only to be scared herself which just again isn't right because Fluttershy wouldn't boast like that. I think the roles would have made more sense being swapped here. It's only a small gripe tho. Overall, a pretty good episode. Good jokes with good characters for the most part and a solid although simple plot and moral.
  4. EPISODE SUMMARY A new pony who calls her herself the great and powerful Trixie has rolled into town to show off her magic to Ponyville. everyone is skeptical of her boasting claims so the main six challenge her one by one and fail. Spike begs Twilight to best her with her magic skill but Twilight doesn't want to seem boastful to her friends. Eventually, 2 boy fillies called snips and snails go to find an user major (a big dangerous magic bear) to prove Trixie is as powerful as she says she is. they lead it into town and Trixie confesses it was all lies. leaving twilight to deal with the problem. Twilight thinks her friends will hate her for showing off but instead they are proud of her. Twilight says its ok to be proud of what you are good at and show off sometimes, especially if its to stick up for your friends. Pinkie is for some reason completely absent in this episode except for a brief appearance at the beginning. Same for Fluttershy. weird. MY THOUGHTS Not much to say. A solid episode all around and Pinkie isn't here at all which is a bonus for me. I like how this doesn't go with the easy route of showing twilight boasting and then being told by her friends to stop but instead she is afraid of doing something wrong which causes her not to do it in a rare situation where it is actually needed. This is a bit of an odd moral but a good one. Spike is a bit irritating in this episode. Sorry but hot take I don't like Spike either. Honestly, I don't hate him or anything, I just don't like the style of jokes they use with him and the cartoon tropes he follows so its more of a personal thing. At least you can understand where he coming from here so it isn't too annoying to have him around. Snips and Snails on the other hand are just the typical carbon cut out cartoon trope dumb sidekick characters and they do nothing else so they suck. The best thing that came out of them was the awesome snails trans fanfics and comics. The only small problem I DO have with the episode other than obviously snips and snails is how they point out the obvious that Rainbow has this exact boasting issue but they don't really point out how hers is different to Trixie or at least not well. This makes the story conflict with the character which kinda sucks but overall it doesn't distract from the episode too much since it is good in a lot of other ways which make up for it and rainbow isn't over used in the episode either. So overall a solid episode with a good twist on the boasting moral which makes it interesting although I don't find it funny, I can see how it is a good episode for most.
  5. Continuing my reviews Episode 5 - Griffon the Brush Off EPISODE SUMMARY An old friend of Rainbow Dash (a Griffon called Gilda) comes to hang out with her. Pinkie Pie wants to join in but Gilda isn't happy about Pinkie hanging out with Rainbow instead of her. Pinkie goes to Twilight to vent about how mean Gilda is and Twilight tells her she might be jealous of their friendship. Pinkie considers this and observes Gilda finding out she is very mean to other ponies and even Fluttershy. Pinkie decides to throw a party and invite Gilda and all her friends. Gilda gets pranked a lot at the party until she loses her temper thinking that Pinkie set it all up to get rid of her in spite of her friendship with Rainbow but it turns out the pranks were Rainbows idea not Pinkie's. Rainbow decides she doesn't like Gilda's attitude and tells her she doesn't want to be friends with someone who is mean to her new friends and Gilda leaves in a huff. Twilight apologises for misjudging Pinkie and writes about it to Celestia. The moral being that you should be careful how you act around a friend of a friend you don't like and try not to be a jerk if you don't like them. If they are a bad friend, they will show their true colours in the end. MY THOUGHTS One of the things I like about this show is the ability for it to teach morals which other shows often don't and this is a good example of this. A great moral which is a good lesson to learn and is not often shown in other kids shows. However, I do have a pretty controversial opinion here. I don't like Pinkie. I'm sorry I just don't like her character. I don't often find her antics funny and instead generally find her annoying. Also I find her confusing which is not good in a show where you need to understand the emotions of a character such as this. You'll see some of what I mean later. That obviously means this episode is going to be hard for me to like on the off set. Just making sure you are aware. I do really like the premise of this episode but I do wish this story was told with different characters as I don't enjoy the parts which are not story specific but thats just me. I do appreciate some little extra moments such as checking if Spike wasn't hurt after a prank and saying it would be too harsh to prank Fluttershy showing they have clear boundaries to their pranks to not upset their friends which contrasts with Gildas pranks later. Its a bit subtle but I really like this. How to do a prank without hurting friends is something which really should be taught more in kids shows as pranks are often shown in a mean spirited way in cartoons which can leave a bad impression. This is one of the many things that elevates this above other kids shows for me. I also kinda can't help but feel a little part of me wanting the whole jealousy angle to be the moral tho. Only because Pinkie isn't shown as being obliviously friendly to Rainbow but instead directly annoying her to the point of her running away from her over and over. I mean they can't expect us to really believe Pinkie is this dumb right? And when Gilda and Rainbow are clearly having fun together without Pinkie and Rainbow asks nicely to hang out with her old friend, Pinkie acts all left out when she literally was hanging out with her all day yesterday. That seems pretty clingy to me and selfish. not really understanding at all which makes the whole thing of Pinkie being right about Gilda being horrible and not being jealous kinda undermines her obsessing over her and makes it look like they support that obsessive stalking of your friends which is obviously not ok. This is one big problem I have with Pinkie as a character in general to. She is often seen being very clingy and obsessive to her friends. Pushing them to do what she wants to the point of them being upset and yet the show never shows this as a bad thing when it obviously should be. You will see more of what I mean in later episodes. Also Twilight being wrong about a characters feelings in this way isn't as impactful when this is an early episode and we haven't seen her be right many times yet. Yet again showing the episodes are acting like they much further ahead in the show than they actually are. I mean this episode introduces a new character when we don't even know the main ones yet. Not much else to say except, great moral, great execution but Pinkie is a bit annoying and the whole jealousy angle could have been handled better. Overall, a pretty decent episode but not great. I think most of my issues with this episode are more personal rather than real quality issues and I accept that.
  6. Continuing my episode reviews Episode 4 - Applebuck Season EPISODE SUMMARY Applejack says she can harvest the whole apple acres orchard all by herself and obviously she can't. She gets exhausted but refuses to get help and so messes up everything for her friends until she is forced to give in and get help from her friends. MY THOUGHTS A much better episode compared to the last one and we can already see the classic mlpfim the fandom loves here including some memes to. This is a solid episode which has a simple premise and so spends most of its time on the comedy and it works in its favour. the humour is much better with some good slapstick and awkwardness jokes. Applejack is clearly shown to be stubborn in a way that's wrong not just for her but for everybody and so the ending feels very deserved. It's also a great moral which is perfectly in character for Applejack. Not much else to say other than this is just a good episode.
  7. Yeah I'm not the first one to do this and isn't super complex or well written but I felt like reviewing episodes and sharing my opinion as I rewatched the show from the beginning just for funsies. Posting per episode so I don't have a post too long. Some may be longer than others depending if I have something to say or not. Hope you enjoy and remember its just my opinion and if you disagree its ok. I would love to discuss in the comments about what you think to. <3 Also bare with me as I might have grammar issues here as I do have some learning disabilities. Not sure if it needs to be said but obviously SPOILERS FOR MPLFIM SEASON 1. EPISODE SUMMARY Twilight recieves a gift from princess Celestia of 2 tickets to the grand galopping gala, a big party which is well known and a big fancy popular event everyone wants to go to. Twilight spends the whole episode trying to decide who to share her tickets with as she has too many friends to share them with and make them all happy. Then her friends try to do her favours to get the ticket from her. Eventually they apologise and twilight says she doesn't want to go if they can't all go. Then Celestia sends them all tickets and all is well. MY THOUGHTS This is one of my least favourite episodes in season 1 which is sad considering the strong start that came just before it. To be honest, this episode feels like it should have been shown a few episodes later than this as it feels like it would make more sense if these characters had got to know each other more first and we got to know them more first before this type of friendship problem and I feel this actually affects the episode a bit badly because of it. I mean one thing that is clear in this episode is that the characters are behaving badly and out of character even if it is for the sake of the moral directly. However, this doesn't make much sense if we haven't even had a chance to see what they would be like IN character and behaving WELL yet other than that one episode. It's probably not the creators fault episodes got mixed up but this is a perfect example of episode placement in a show like this being important not to mess up sometimes. sorry for the little tangent. let me get to the episode itself. This episode has several typical cartoon tropes in it which are kinda cringy and annoying for me but it is a kids show so take that as you will. Maybe it doesn't bother you but typical kids slapstick humour is a personal hate of mine so I found the slapstick gags like her being chased around town and using disguises to get away from all the ponies of town to be just annoying but that's probably just me. They are over used tho so I doubt many kids would like it much either. I also feel like the characters in this one are a little too mean spirited and end up being kinda jerks a little too quickly and easily for my taste. If you have watched later episodes of the show then you would know they have done things better than this later but of course this was early days in the show so you could argue it is excusable at this point but there is also the point that its kinda bad having such an early episode after they just made friends with her having them squabble and be bit nasty to her over something so small. It just feels wrong to me. But its not just the fact they end up being mean to Twilight but also HOW they do it that I think bothers me even more. For example, they don't just do the typical thing of doing forced favours to get Twilight to give them the ticket but Pinkie also tries to socially manipulate Twilight by pretending she thinks she already has the ticket so it would be harder since Twilight would have to directly disappoint her by saying no. That just feels too mean and manipulative for a show ABOUT friendship for a character to do in my opinion especially since it is literally seconds after she finds out about the tickets. It's also clear to I think anyone that someone like Pinkie just feels wrong to be so manipulative in this way. It can't just be me who thinks this right? I mean Rarity makes sense in some ways but Pinkie? It just feels wrong to me how such a happy pony could just turn like this on a friend for something so small. And that's what I thought when I first saw this episode before any other episodes were released. A matter which makes this worse is also how it tries to treat the problem with logic by Twilight saying she should give the pony who has the best reason to go the ticket. This seems reasonable but when you think about it, it would have been better not to mention this idea as a solution as this causes a problem. This means that Twilight has to see all the reasons as the same value for this to work but unfortunately they are NOT equal because ONE pony has a very good reason above everyone else. can you guess who? Applejack! The reason why her reason breaks this episode in my opinion is that she is the only pony with a unselfish reason to go. She doesn't just want to earn money at the gala to get luxuries for herself but she want's the money to get her grandma a NEW HIP! You can't say that a dream of meeting a handsome guy is at the same level as giving an important surgery for a loved one! This completely distracted me for the whole episode coz the whole time I was thinking. GIVE IT TO APPLEJACK! This is a bad oversight and tbh I think it was a bad idea to introduce this solution in the first place as it is a bad thing to teach kids. I mean do you really expect young kids to know which reason has proper priority over another? To have this mentioned but then not properly gone through I believe will lead to problems for some kids watching this as it just makes the whole thing more complicated and confusing. Then again, maybe I'm wrong. what do you think? Overall, the humour is old overused cartoon tropes, the characters are unlikable and too mean in some ways and the overall moral is flawed. Leaving this to be an episode I didn't like at all.
  8. Yeah I'm not the first one to do this and it isn't super complex or well written but I felt like reviewing episodes and sharing my opinion as I rewatched the show from the beginning just for funsies. Posting per episode so I don't have a post too long. Some may be longer than others depending if I have something to say or not. Not sure if it needs to be said but obviously SPOILERS FOR MLPFIM SEASON 1. season 1 ep 1 and 2 - elements of harmony part 1 and 2 EPISODE SUMMARY Twilight Sparkle is a purple pony which lives in the fancy city of canterlot and is a direct student to the princess Celestia. She reads an old story which explains the back story of how Princess Celestia is a pony god of the sun and her little sister Luna is the pony princess god of the moon. Celestia is in charge of the day and Luna is charge of the night but Luna becomes bitter due to ponies not appreciating her night so she becomes an evil form called Nightmare Moon and Celestia is forced to seal her in the moon for a thousand years. After reading more about this story Twilight learns that Nightmare Moon is soon going to break out from the moon and plunge the land in eternal night so she tries to warn Princess Celestia ahead of time. Celestia however, seems to ignore her and tells her to go to a small rural town of ponyville to make friends and see over the preparations for the summer sun celebration (a major event to do with celebrating the raising of the sun). Twilight is not keen however, and continues to blow off friendly ponies to try to study more but they keep interrupting her so she doesn't get the chance. she starts to doubt herself but then when the celebrations start it is found she was right about it all as nightmare moon appears before everyone (im not saying everypony. I hate that phrase) and threaten to make the night last forever. Now Twilight and her new bunch of ponies she met must venture into a scary forest called the Everfree Forest to find an old ruin which holds some items called the Elements of Harmony which are said to be the only thing which can stop the evil Nightmare Moon. They go through various trials and each pony solves one problem each in their unique way. They end up at the ruins but nightmare moon is already there. Twilight tries to cast a spell to make the elements work but it fails but then she realises the Elements of Harmony were actually the ponies she has made friends with and came with her all along and not the items they were searching for. They then use the power of friendship and magic to turn Nightmare Moon back into Luna and Celestia turns up to ask that they put their differences aside and rule together again. Luna agrees and all is well. Celestia then tells Twilight to study friendship and report to her her findings and Twilight will live in Ponyville from now on. This sets up everything for the rest of the season. MY THOUGHTS I have to say considering this is a kids show, this premise for the very start of a show is pretty complicated and it explains it pretty well with its short time frame. However, this may seem contradictory but this IS a complicated plot for the start of a kids show and so it is not going to be perfectly explained in such a short time. It is pretty obvious from anyone who has seen cartoons before that these episodes are a bit rushed. The thing it lacks the most in my opinion is the build up to the elements of harmony reveal. We unfortunately don't get much time to understand our characters before it is told to us their significance; only just giving us enough time to figure it out and even directly saying it at times to make it easier to understand which makes the whole episode come off as a little too strong on the morals and plot reveal. This is a pretty small gripe in the whole scheme of things tho as we obviously get more time with the characters in later episodes and this episode is mostly just to set the scene and characters so this isn't too distracting. I could go on a long time about how I don't like how some of these friendship lessons are taught such as why Applejack wouldn't just TELL twilight she would be caught by Rainbow and Fluttershy instead of purposely being a d##k and just telling her to trust someone she just met yesterday for no reason but we would be here all day so I'm just gonna leave it at this for now. Feel free to ask me if you want to know more of my opinion on this episode or any episode in these posts in more detail by asking me in the comments. Overall, I think this was handled well for the short time it had giving just enough time to get everything it needed across. Can't say much more than that considering this episode is literally just a set up and not much else. A little complicated and hard to follow but a good start.
