  1. Yes. I mean, if I became a world famous engineer who also happened to have written more than one My Little Pony fan fiction in his youth, I could live with that. Can you translate your response to this question in a cipher or code? If yes, please translate your response in a cipher or code of your choice.

  4. So a thing happened on reddit/r/space today. A number of videos released by NASA were attacked by conspiracy theorists, calling astronauts and like-topics "masonic", "pseudoscien[tific]" and "against god". What's their beef against Scott Kelly breaking the American record for most consecutive days spent in space, I have no idea. I bring this up on this thread specifically because I often find myself concerned when people seem to raise some objection about there being a compatibility with God and scientific understanding. I don't know about you but I think they're wonderful examples of both God's creative powers, and his adoration of us, that the Universe might come into existence through a Big Bang, or that humans could explore the moon. I have yet to comprehend the mind that would try to say moon landings and the Big Bang are ideas diametrically opposed to God's providence or Jesus's love. I also bring this up on this thread because space is cool and I like having friends who are Christians who also like space.
  5. You're both right! Hydrostatic equilibrium is the internal forces of an object trying to "null" itself out in a gravity field. Aka, objects in space trying to take on a very lazy form, which generally consists of a sphere. However, things in space aren't always going to form spheres because their own gravitational field is not the only gravitational force affecting them. (Structure of the object also plays its part, but planetary structural strength is often infinitesimal in comparison to its own Hill Sphere, which is why planets [and globs of juice] form ball-shaped objects, and spacecraft do not. The space shuttle's Hill Sphere is only about the size of a beach ball but the entire craft is larger than a private jet, and much more resilient than its own gravitational force, so it will never crumple into a ball.) Objects in orbit, as well as their own rotation will affect the shape of their hydrostatic equilibrium. The Sun's gravity and mass are stupendous, which is why the Sun is actually the most spherical object yet observed in nature. If it had a surface, the highest mountain on the Sun would only be about an inch tall, and be spread over an area several times larger than the surface area of the entire Earth. Haumea, a Trans-Neptunian dwarf planet, has an egg-shaped hydrostatic equilibrium due to its rotation, the influence of its moon, and its interactions with Neptune and Uranus. And it isn't alone with its surface irregularity. It's fully possible for large planets and even stars to adopt unusual shapes as well.
  6. You can only wear fedoras when your age is a sum of two greater-than-ten primes.
  7. What you're hinting at is tentatively explored in the 2009 movie Surrogates, where the primary means of human life in developed countries becomes "living" in virtual reality pods where the necessities of survival are provided for a stationary person, and their "life" is lived through a customization, durable, enhanced (and for the military, replaceable) remote-control androids. The idea of "connecting people to the Matrix" often smacks somewhere between the philosophical Brain in a Jar solipsism problem and the highly speculative ethics of the very young concept of transhumanism. Ultimately though I really don't buy either of those scenarios being dangerous because anyone who seriously argues that some giant internet connectivity replacing human interaction with the world does not have a very all-encompassing perspective of the varieties of human paradigms and cultures which would forever reject the possibility of the whole matrix-connectivity thing. The whole ubiquity of "everyone plugged into the matrix" also conveniently overlooks the stupendous luxury of a proposed system which could only possibly exist if every person in the world lived in a place at minimum as developed as a moderately sized American city-- and also presumes all of the necessary infrastructure, such as power generation and food growth-- to make it run efficiently. As an Engineering student, people who think everyone will be plugged into the Matrix, forgets how much work it takes to design the plug.
  8. Computer-generated 3D models are almost always made using one of two common media: Polygons or NURBS. Polygons are interpolations of points. The locations of the points are what distinguishes the surface of the model in X,Y,Z coordinates, and can be "related" to one another using transformations, rotations and skeleton-like constraints. This type of model generation is often what people think of when they picture "3D models" because they are easy to texture and animate, and thus are nearly the only kind of 3D models ever seen in real-time applications, video games and movies. NURBS (Non-Uniform Rational Basis Splines) are used in CNC design, computer-aided drawing, drafting, architecture, and other applications where the 3D model is turned into a real world object. 3D Printers convert polygon models into NURBS objects before they can be printed. NURBS are made with very similar tools to Polygon objects, except the computer works by connecting volumes (geometric objects) rather than interpolating points (lines and surfaces). The difference between a Polygon object and a NURBS object is that NURBS will have all of the points in space within its volume mathematically defined, whereas Polygons do not. For example: look at the points on this character's face. You can see that his nose looks smooth even though in the "wireframe mode", the smoothness is basically a computerized filter that is sub-dividing each square into smaller and smaller ones until it looks smooth. A spline is actually smooth, rather than having the appearance of smoothness, since the curve is defined by a mathematical function. Because every single point on the surface or inside the volume of a NURBS object can be calculated, machines can convert that precise information into movement in real-world space, and then instructions to machining tools, or as dimensions on a blueprint. NURBS objects do not appear in animations very often because it is extremely difficult to make them calculate textures or deform them using a time-scale. Both of these tasks are very easy for Polygons.
  9. I signed in only to brohoof this comment. Sine, Cosine and Tangent go on to infinity because the series formula that constitutes each of them is the sum of an unending series. Sine looks like this: (π/180)*x - (π/180)³*(x³/3!) +(π/180)^5 *(x^5/5!) -(π/180)^7 *(x^7/7!) . . . Before pocket calculators, engineers would perform trigonometry either by memorizing trigonometric numeral identies in common intervals (such as knowing sin(5), sin(10), sin(15)... by memory), or approximating therebetween. Limitations on computation power such as this are why cars, planes and other vehicles were made of such simple angular or geometric shapes until around 1990, when computers came along that made precision curves and flows much easier.
  10. I loved the look of the Bombe in The Imitation Game.
  11. He wanted a brick joke, but got two bricks. He wanted clocks to be circles, but got a donut.
  12. He wanted to get kudos for a Red vs. Blue reference, and got a job as Sarge.
  13. The purpose of the Engineer is to solve problems. There are numerous kinds of problems in the world, but the ones which are of highest priority are for basic needs and the provision of the fundamental necessities for life, and the saving of lives who are in danger. The apparent common employ of Engineers today concerns the construction of overpriced housing, improvement or maintenance of existing infrastructure in developed countries, the invention of new, novel or clever devices for amusement and luxury, or the creation of new military technologies. Therefore I'm going to see what I can do to commit myself to the task of Engineering for providing to those who are either in danger or do not have the necessities of life as of yet. Rocket engines are exciting, but wells, bridges, desalination systems and windmills are needed far more dearly.
  14. The main reason why aircraft are not permitted to fly near volcanoes is because if engines inhale ash, combustion cycles melt the particulate and coat the interior of the engine in a gooey carbon-based glass, which can clog part movement and, if it freezes, cause serious mechanical damage. This was discovered for the first time in 1982 when a jumbo jet flew through an ash cloud at night, and seriously damaged all four of its engines as a result-- as well as sandblasting the pilot's windscreen, making it impossible to see outside.
  15. Half of my Engineering courses are semi-online or fully online, with directions given in lectures and labs for self-actuated homework assignments. These courses include Technical Math, Material Science, Graphics for Engineering and Static Physics.
  16. Tachyons are a theoretical type of particle that is constantly traveling faster than the speed of light. This makes their existence very hard to prove. (It's not that things cannot *travel* at the speed of light, only that things cannot *accelerate* {or decellerate} to the speed of light.)
  17. It's more like "certain parts of Mars have liquid groundwater that's like 95% poisonous salt perchlorate, but we have high hopes on that last 5%". We've know that there was water on Mars for a very long time; the liquid bit is the interesting part.
  18. With my experiences of the show, I'm pretty sure this is going to be a temporary gimmick that lasts somewhere between a third to a half of the whole episode. Like The Mysterious Mare-Do Well and Spike at Your Service, this probably developed out of some zany gimmick the storywriters thought up, and was continuously thought of as hilarious by crew-members that it proceeded entirely with just-enough challenge to make it through the production line unscathed, into making a very strange and uncharacteristic episode. When people learned the season 2 finale would be about a wedding, some bronies were fast to make assumptions about conjugate relationships or children between the inferred happy couple. With three years of retrospect, I think we can confidently assert that such directions are never going to happen in the Friendship is Magic canon.
  19. Still haven't watched that allegedly sob-fest tripe, and I've been around since 2011.
