Elements are made of atoms, and those elemental atoms are different because they're made of different numbers of protons and neutrons. Protons and neutrons are almost identical to one another, except one of them has an electromagnetic charge. This charge is equal but opposite to the electron. Protons and neutrons are composed of different combinations of Quarks; quarks are subatomic particles which have minute charges (charges less than "1".) Quarks are not composed of anything smaller. Fundamentally quarks are "made" of variations of energy levels in the quantum vacuum state. Modifications of energy at this level can easily determine what kind of fundamental particle results higher up in the chain of physics. The simple explanation of this phenomena is that "at the quantum level, the lines between matter and energy start to blur".

This lag is effectively ignored for all intents and purposes in almost every field of science and medicine. However it is of vital importance in biometrics and kinesiology. The perceptive delay of the human brain is analogous to time dilation in physics; The faster you're moving, the slower time progresses. Due to the fact that this only has a useful predictive meaning when traveling at appreciable fractions of the speed of light, relativistic time dilation is ignored by almost everyone. The only people who don't are micro-processing manufacturers, GPS satellite operators, deep space probe controllers, astronomers and theoretical physicists. The Philosophy of Time often operates based upon taking one of two axioms: A theory or B theory. A Theory Time says that the past and future do not exist. The only thing which exists in reality is an infinitesimally short moment called the Present, which takes the potentials of the future and writes them as information into the past. B Theory Time says that the past, present and future all exist simultaneously, and that we are merely discovering the Universe at a specific (almost) unchangeable and irreversible rate.

Astatine (element 207At) has never been observed. It's radioactive half life is so short that it will always heat itself up, turn into a gas and accelerate its own decay into lighter elements before it can be seen, even with high speed cameras. Some theoretical chemists have predicted it may be shiny and black, but we will probably never know for sure.

Thus the Elements of Harmony and Princess of Love probably have greatly extended lifespans, as well as many ponies exposed to them through everyday contact to them or their magic. Equestria has no federal or municipal police forces, since crime is nearly nonexistent. Fluttershy and Rarity knew each other before the events of S1E1 Friendship is Magic; their weekly spa sessions has carried on before then too. Rainbow Dash or Fluttershy or both have an as-yet unmentioned sibling(s) as well. Gummi the Alligator is literate. Rarity is bilingual. An exceptionally well-put-together insurance company is responsible for the restoration of Ponyville after episodes where large portions of the town are destroyed without apparently inconveniencing anypony. What I do is invent headcanons which either facilitate possible or likely outcomes of future episodes based upon the past history of the show, or invent them based upon directions and characterizations which the show would probably never address. (Though in doing so, I always try to make characterizations and directions which the show would probably do if the show addressed them. For example, a canon space episode would probably have a pegasus flying into space, not a rocket.)

Also remember that IQ is based upon a social average which is recalibrated every few years. Which means unless you're working hard at continually getting smarter and applying knowledge in new ways, your IQ is going to decline. Unless you're like me where you've never cared in the first place and don't even actually know your IQ.

I seriously doubt there are intelligent lifeforms in such close proximity to our location in the Galaxy and epoch in the Universe's lifetime that it makes a large difference whether we send signals or not.

Writers have no sense of scale. People who can't communicate and the alarmingly catching trend of people having awkward moments passing as cute romance both make me cringe and get angry at the same time.
