I was watching a few Magical Mystery Cure reviews and a few of them mention Starswirl The Bearded and something about him being Discord after using some spell or something. I don't know, it doesn't make sense to me.

if he were Discord, he wouldn't have been renowned as a great wizard by the commonfolk. also, why'd Celestia hand out an unfinished spell by his to Twilight without herself studying the causes of it? obviously the spell was a test of her worth as an alicorn, and giving her a potentially dangerous spell would be... well, dangerous. and how'd he change form from a pony to a draconequus?

it's all wild speculation and fanon material.
