    Something the MLP writers know how to do, and some fanfiction authors don't, is how to acknowledge darkness without falling headfirst into it.

      The show has gone surprisingly dark and moody at certain points, but not so much that it overwhelms the narrative...whereas in dark fanfics, authors tend to pour the sad stuff on too thick. Just something I noticed.
