  1. I joined the forum in September 2012 between Seasons 2 and 3. The ponies got me through some very tough times, and the forum devoted to them was one of the best online communities I'd ever been a part of; a place overflowing with good vibes, creativity, and appreciation for the show. It was, and is, something special. Highlights of my time here include starting my favorite pony's fan club and seeing her win the first Most Attractive Pony contest, checking out Crispy's Metal Thread, Skyping with Feld0 about his plans for Poniverse, and reviewing the worst fan fic ever for a podcast hosted by @TheLoyalBrony. I haven't watched since Season 5 and have been mostly gone since 2016, but this place looks almost the same. Happy (belated) birthday indeed. While it would be impossible to list ALL the people here who did so much to make me feel welcome, I am proud to give shout-outs to @Zygen, @Dusty Soul, @Twiliscael, @~C. Discord~, @~Lawful Jordo~, @Mutemutt, @Stellafera, @Batbrony, @Clarity, @Envy, @Dolphanatic, @Antismurf9001, @Sks_Burns, @Rolls Royce, @HunterTSN, @Dark Qiviut, @Gone Airbourne, @Flxpturn, @MontagnaMagica, @ping111, @Octavia's Cellozoid, @Say my name, @Wingnut, @Evilshy, @TheSupremeLeaderOfChaos, and Lightning Fluttershy. Thank you.
  2. Only for as long as I've been on the Internet. A lot of it sounds exaggerated and absurd. Control is mainly an illusion, but most people are too wrapped up in human affairs to appreciate that.
  3. Yes. I don't know if I'm any good at it, but I certainly have passion. Coming up with ideas has always been easy for me; seeing them through is far more difficult.
  4. Well said. More simply, George Carlin defined us (humanity) as "semi-civilized animals with baseball caps and automatic weapons," which was pretty much on the nose. Our species still has a long way to go.
  5. Coffee. Half-caff (since I've cut down on my caffeine intake) with cream and sugar. Maxwell House. It really is good to the last drop.
  6. 2000 was one of the best years of my life. I was 14/15 and finally going to a school I liked, all my favorite shows were still on (although The Simpsons was already jumping the shark), wrestling was still worth watching, and there was some halfway decent music on the radio. I worked a paper route to save money for a used Nintendo 64, the newest system I'd ever owned, and hung out at the local game store to see demos of the newest Dreamcast games. Pretty fun times. 2005 and 2008/9 had their moments, but after that I pretty much lost all hope, stopped caring about games and the latest tech, and withdrew into a shell which I never left until discovering MLP. And that's been among the few bright spots.
  7. Lichmagick and Gotsu Totsu Kotsu scream greatness; thanks for perking up my morning, old friend. It's been way too long since I posted some music here. But what to choose? I have to give props to the band that first introduced me to metal: the mighty Megadeth. While this song from Youthanasia lacks the power of their 80s material, it's arguably one of Dave Mustaine's greatest vocal performances. But how about some modern metal bands I'm into? Admittedly there aren't many, but Gojira is one; a French juggernaut that truly lives up to its name. Jon Nodtveidt was a psycho, but if you're familiar with the 90s black metal band Dissection, you know he was as musically gifted as they come. While this performance of Elisabeth Bathory is a cover (Tormentor wrote the original), he adds more atmosphere to it. Still one of my favorites.
  8. 5/10. Normally guitar solo songs aren't my thing (unless we're talking Sean Hall or Andy Summers). This is a pretty good piece, very tightly performed but kind of repetitive, and doesn't feel like it's going anywhere until the last 30 seconds or so; then it ends.
  9. Yes. I cried at the end of 'Sonic Rainboom'. That was such an amazing moment for Rainbow Dash. I teared up a little at 'Hurricane Fluttershy' as well.
  10. I just watched this one again and it's still great. It's easy to get caught up in how much of a miserable bully Gilda is, but when you look past that, there are much more important things to take away from this episode. Sometimes your friends have other friends who you don't like, or vice versa. (In Pinkie and Gilda's case the dislike was mutual - the difference being that Pinkie tried to coexist peacefully and Gilda didn't.) Also, your choice of friends can change over time. Dash wasn't exactly the most popular filly at flight camp ("Rainbow Crash", etc) and when you're an outcast, you turn to other outcasts for solidarity and protection. So I can see Rainbow and Gilda being old friends. One way to avoid getting bullied is to make a friend out of the bully. But now that Dash is older, more sure of herself, and living in a place where she's been accepted, things are a little different. She's still willing to hang out, but seeing how Gilda blows her top at the party, she realizes she doesn't need that kind of friend anymore. I think Dash actually learns more from this experience than Pinkie Pie does. I really enjoyed the good clean fun in the first act, the rapport between Pinkie and Dash, and Pinkie's portrayal as an innocent and fun-loving but basically rational pony. She gets jealous, hurt, and upset without overreacting or going dark (like in 'Party of One'). I like this early version of Pinkie much better than the broad caricature she was reduced to in future seasons.
  11. Tough one, but overall I'd pick The Best Night Ever. It was a funny and touching finale where all the main characters learned an important and realistic life lesson. Plus it had one of the best musical numbers they ever did. Sonic Rainboom, A Dog and Pony Show, Swarm of the Century, and Griffon the Brush-Off were great too.
  12. Oh, no doubt. I was tired of that too. It just bugged me that the show hinted at real, individual talents for them in earlier seasons (Scootaloo's speed, Apple Bloom building things, Sweetie's singing), but instead of following up on those they just slapped the same cutie mark on all three fillies and called it a day.
  13. Nah, I don't think it needs to be darker or more serious. There are oodles of shows that are already doing that. Too many, really. That trend has been chugging along since the 90s and it's kind of played out. If I want some darker MLP, there are excellent fanfics out there like 'Carousel' or 'A Night at Shadow Station'. If we're talking about ways they could develop the show and explore some new ideas, I think deeper and more character-driven plots are the way to go.
  14. The One Where Pinkie Pie knows and the Season 6 premiere. I heard "baby alicorn" and pretty much tuned out from there.
  15. Nah, it's much too late to get that Twilight back now. The writers made their decisions and now they have to live with 'em.
  16. Even though I didn't like much of Season 3 besides 'Sleepless in Ponyville', and it has that still-painful finale, I really enjoyed Seasons 1 and 2. 1 was all about introducing Lauren Faust's vision of a TV show for little girls that anybody could enjoy. Season 2 was about developing that vision in ways that (mostly) made sense while staying true to the show's roots. Seasons 4-7 have some great individual episodes but overall the show doesn't have the same feel. So I'll go for 1-3.
  17. Personally, I thought it was about time they got their marks. But I didn't like them all getting the same mark, at the same time. How in Tartarus does that work? Their special talent (or their "destiny"; don't get me started on that part) is...helping other ponies realize their special talents? So they're basically elementary school guidance counselors, except they don't get paid. That's the dream they waited five seasons to realize. It was kind of a letdown, considering how great the rest of that episode was. Basically they spent the early seasons building realistic, interesting character/plot arcs and Seasons 3-5 finishing those arcs in ways that didn't work for me. Twilicorn, CMC, Elements of Harmony getting stuck in a tree, et al.
  18. I miss Twilight Sparkle, the adorkable and sarcastic unicorn with whom I once identified so strongly. I miss her old cozy library in that huge oak tree. I miss the Elements of Harmony and the friendship lessons from when the show really was being written for little girls. It's not that I stopped enjoying the show when those things changed. I mean, I love Starlight Glimmer and Maud Pie and the nicer Diamond Tiara. But it does feel different now. If I could only watch two seasons of the show for the rest of my life, I would choose 1 and 2.
  19. I created the first version of this thread WAY back in 2013 and it was a blast. Now that the show is in its 7th season and so many interesting new characters have come along, I think it could be even more fun now, so I'm bringing it back! Not sure how the mods would feel about me bumping a four-year-old thread, even if it's mine...so I'll start a new one just to be safe. The real world, Equestria, or both are in danger. You must lead a rag-tag group of FIVE MLP: FIM characters on an RPG-like quest to save the day. Here are the rules! You may pick: 1. ONE of the Mane Six. 2. ONE non-Mane Six unicorn, earth pony or pegasus. 3. ONE minor villain. (Can be reformed, or not; your choice.) 4. ONE stallion. 5. ONE background pony. 6. ONE non-pony character. (No OCs, EQG characters, or major villains allowed) I will brohoof anyone who also posts good reasons for each of their picks (like what special abilities this character has, what he or she adds to the team, etc). Have at it, my friends!
  20. Wow. That sounds amazingly bad. How could they mess up a Batman vs. Superman movie? Even a paint-by-numbers collision of their typical characters would have been more appealing than that, and it would have made just as much money.
  21. Frankly, making this Spike's best season wouldn't be all that hard. All the writers have to do is portray him as the same character in all his episodes, and have him display a basic level of competence in whatever he does. :diamondtiara: But snark aside, I am intrigued by the possibilities of a friendship with Starlight Glimmer. I think the BEST thing that could happen is this: 1. Starlight has actually been faking most of her reformation to this point. Sure, she gave up on her time-traveling plan when she saw how badly it was screwing up Equestria. But she still has no love for Twilight and her friends, and she still wants =quality. Beautiful =quality... 2. Having come to trust Spike, she reveals this to him. He's torn between betraying that trust by telling on her, or endangering Equestria by keeping her secret. Spike realizes that the difficult task of showing her true friendship is on him, and him alone...and he doesn't have much time. Huh? Huh? What do you think of that idea?
  22. An absolute delight. I was so amused by the lively dialogue and wrapped up in Rarity's detective role, it didn't even occur to me that there was only one reasonable culprit. I was thrown off by all the evidence that seemingly pointed to Dash; I knew it wouldn't be her, but I just went along for the ride and waited for Rares to piece it all together. I was actually surprised by the ending--not because Wind Rider was the perpetrator, but because he did it all so deliberately and showed so little remorse. I guess he didn't have somepony like Spitfire as an instructor back in his day...or he just couldn't let go of the past. Sometimes the Rarity episodes not centered on fashion are her most entertaining. This was definitely the case with A Dog and Pony Show and I can put this one in that category as well. I loved every second of it, especially the film noir bits and Rarity accidentally narrating out loud (possibly a callback to a classic Saturday Night Live bit, "Death Be Not Deadly"--find it on Netflix NOW). Twenty-some minutes wasn't enough for the show to dive into a really deep and satisfying mystery; we needed at least a two-parter for that. I'm a huge fan of mystery shows, especially Murder She Wrote, and while this wasn't the equal of that show it was pretty darn good for a kids' program. Great stuff and I really hope we see Detective Rarity again.
  23. Going off that promo, we don't know that the alicorn baby will actually be the focus of the episode. They may be just emphasizing it to appeal to little girls or sell the toys. But I agree that an alicorn baby is a bad idea in a show that already had one alicorn too many. I won't exactly be chomping at the bit to see this premiere.
