  1. Yeah, Owen definitely wanted to get out of wrestling towards the end. He was making enough money to support his family and I think he sensed that Vince was never going to give him a real push, plus he wanted to save his body and exit the business gracefully. The Rock did the same thing in 2003, and looking back I think it was for the best.

Unfortunately, Owen never got the retirement he deserved.

  2. I must find ways of protecting myself from those that wish to do me harm. When you live in a world with monsters, its hard not become one yourself in some shape or form.

I was just telling my mom something like that yesterday. "I don't understand people. Sometimes they all seem like monsters to me." And they really do.

  3. I disagree with JBL. He paid his dues, yeah, and obviously he's been close to management for a long time. But he's not one of the greats in my mind and he had a rep as a locker room bully. (Remember when Joey Styles of all people punched him out in Iraq?)

Also disagree with Jacqueline. She was a capable female wrestler in WWE and still is today, but she didn't have that special quality about her.

    Regis is a disgrace.

Charles Wright could get it done in the ring, but he's really known only for his memorable gimmicks, one of which I hated even as a teenage mark (the Godfather). So I'd have to disagree with that one too.

Sting and the Fabulous Freebirds are the only picks I agree with here. They don't come any more awesome than the Franchise, and the Freebirds revolutionized heel tag team wrestling.

  4. Good article. I agree that all gender norm-based discrimination is wrong. I think bronies will be more widely accepted with time. (My family has never made a big deal about my being one, which I really appreciate.)

Fret not, I despise SJWs, too. SJWs are a lot like TERFs, in which they aren't vying for civil rights, but exploiting others to look after themselves. Their brand of "social justice" goes against everything I stand for.

Amen to that, my friend! Those people are doing more harm than good.

  5. Yes, it is over-analyzed. Constantly. One could argue that we're over-analyzing every time we bring up something that didn't occur to the writers, or go into more detail than the episodes themselves did. It's not as bad as it sounds. It only stands out to me when people do it constantly or are jerks about it.

I think we expect a little too much continuity from the show; for example, ripping on the repeated lessons in Rainbow Falls and criticizing Fluttershy for not being assertive yet. It's easy to talk about that when we're on the receiving end of the content being produced; continuity is hard when you have to cobble together an episode under time constraints, then put it right out of your mind so you can move on to the next.

Occasional nitpicking is one thing, but I find myself increasingly bored with "pseudo-analysts" who pick out a recent episode seemingly at random and nitpick it to hell as if it's the worst thing ever. That routine got people's attention for a while, but I think it's exhausted now.

  6. It's not really a blog if you're just copy-pasting from Wikipedia. =_=

That said, I liked Edge. Not one of the all-time greats IMO but he was a really effective heel, always fun to watch, and I rooted for him to break the Undertaker's streak at WrestleMania XXIV.

  7. Warning, long post coming up!

I agree it was an amazing 2-parter. It presented "the town" as a mini-dictatorship with cult-like elements--which, as you point out, isn't really working. I get the feeling the place has only existed for 2-5 years, so it had limited resources to work with. But the town is poor, rundown, and uncomfortable. No one is prospering or having a good time, not even Starlight. Her ideology is her life. That makes her a more dangerous villain in the long term than Tirek, Discord, and Nightmare Moon, because she's not an obvious threat and she bends (or breaks) other ponies to serve her purposes.

I think it would've been worth mentioning that although keeping her cutie mark (and thus her magic) was hypocritical and the society is a flawed model built on deceit, I think it's reasonable to conclude that Starlight did need her magic to remove other ponies' cutie marks. If she could have been honest about it instead of using the staff as a prop, that would have helped her in the end. Imagine if, at the climactic scene where Fluttershy exposes Starlight's mark, she acts totally unconcerned and all the villagers just smile their eerie smiles and say, "IT'S OKAY. WE ALREADY KNOW." 0_O

To her credit, Starlight doesn't accumulate riches and live apart from the rest of the town. She doesn't delegate all her responsibilities to middlemen who act with impunity. And she doesn't allow things to get out of control. Saying that she could be worse only goes so far though, as she is still a "sociopath" with "no respect for others' rights or feelings" who I wouldn't want anything to do with in real life. So I'm not really sure why I like her so much. It's certainly not her world view or her methods. =_=  I guess it's because she's well designed, committed, and a perfectly realized character with tons of future potential whether she reforms or not.

Finally, on to the video itself: what allows your message to get across is that you understand how to make a good commentary on Youtube. I've seen a lot of people who don't. They record themselves on a moldy potato, they throw in distracting elements, they freak out and rant just for kicks, or they have a totally unsuitable voice that I can't bear to listen to. Your recording quality is great, you keep things simple and easy to follow, your comments are reasonable and focused on the show, and your voice is more than adequate for effective narration. It's really refreshing to see a video review as well done as yours. I will check out more of them in the future!

  8. Excellent review as always, DQ! I didn't like the staff's name either, but everything else was spot-on. I think this is your best analysis yet because you cover so much ground that other people haven't: a possible reason and meaning for the town being nameless, the significance of such a mature theme being presented so well on a kids's show, Starlight's rejection of the cutie mark system itself echoing ongoing debates in the fandom, and how MMC's idea of "stolen/wrong mark = stolen/wrong special abilities" that took a wrecking ball to continuity and helped destroy that finale from the inside out, was actually used well and worked to the show's advantage here.

I'd be very interested to see video reviews from you, but I understand your reasons for not doing them as yet; they're the same as mine. But you already have good ideas for how to do a video review, and that's the first step. I welcome a further analysis of the song 'In Our Town', because it's easily one of the most well-conceived in the show's history.

  9. Normally I would say Unfortunate Tyranny, but it's reached the point where even I am tired of pointing out Celestia's nonexistent teaching, lack of preparation and poor judgment. I've given up on the possibility of her making sense.

An idea just came to me that's related to #10 but not exactly it. I really would like to see your analysis of Fluttershy and her lack of development. She's one of the characters who cries out the most for a more specific backstory and I think the closest we ever got to that was Hurricane Fluttershy--not coincidentally my favorite episode of the series. It's not that Shy is my favorite character, but I relate to her and want to see her explored and developed more. But she's just kind of there and being put in embarrassing positions for awkward laughs, like the one you point out where Dash traded her for a book. (Even Filli Vanilli felt hollow.)
