Just changed my notification settings. I will no longer receive notifications for new status updates. I know that my notifications will drop at least 95%, but I think I will now be less annoyed by receiving 150 notifications and only one of them is not a status update.

That's the thing. Most people are not up to anything interesting whatsoever and quite a few status updates are just used to try to get everyone's attention. Which is why quite a few people post a new one every ten minutes. It get's very boring after a while. I was gone for two days and I had 147 notifications when I come back and only one of them was not a status update. People do it way too often.
