Good ol' Borderlands 1. Lot's of nostalgia fun. That's been my night so far, good way to spend it methinks.

I personally like the first Borderlands far more than the sequels. Sure, the sequels have better loot and weapons and whatnot, but they also, in my opinion, have incredibly cringy writing and a tryhard atmosphere to them. The first game feels far more subdued in a good way. It has a much more chill atmosphere.

Personally I don't know, the story in Borderlands in general is rather confusing and not so fascinating. It's just a pretty plain main objective accompanied by tons of irrelevant sidequests and tons, tons of backtracking.

The first one was kinda quiet story-wise, just going forward from point A to B, then from B to C, without much new in the process, where the second one introduced tons and tons of random, kinda cringy indeed talking in background .. and some cringy characters as well, but there were some events worth attention.
I've played the second one twice in a row (new game+ thingy) and the second time things were making way more sense, compared to what I was understanding in the first go, heh. The second one is likeable in my opinion, the main story is more meaningful with some plot twists and stuff.
The first one was pretty plain, but yeah, it had that nice chill atmosphere. I wanted to beat it twice as well to understand it all better, but these perfectly balanced stupid DLC's ruined the game, because I ended up having too high level when I finished these and wanted to start over in the new game+ thingy. You're supposed to be around level 35, I had 50 or something - the level you should get to while ending the second playthrough - so yeah, it basically would be speedrunning it without paying attention to absolutely anything, 'coz no exp, poor loot = no rewards etc.. It was so exciting I quit the game. That's one of the many reasons why DLC's are garbage.
It's been yeeeeeeears since I played borderlands for the very first time, so I 'refreshed' the first two ones quite recently, now will be getting to the pre-sequel sometime soon, though from what I recall, it wasn't anything fascinating either. I feel like these games are meant to be played for gameplay, rather than seeking mindblowing storyline and writing. It's fun to play with someone.
And then there's that 3rd one I don't own yet.
