Just because he's an admin doesn't mean I need to make sure I become a goody-two-shoes out of fear.

I would hope people would leave random conversations to lounge topics, as even forum games have a purpose, but off-topic stuff here and there in general is always fine. Derailing is fine, as long as you don't crash from it and can get back on the rails sooner than later.
