Think of electrons as concentrated energy in the electron field; which permeates everything. Therefore, the energy is everywhere, while we just see the concentrated areas. But, as soon as we "see" them, they aren't there anymore, based on the Heisenberg uncertainty principle. Plus the fact that we can only predict the chances of an electron being in a certain place.

Yeah, quantum physics. Gotta love it.
