I think the whole thing is that the whole community just needs to re-evaluate their approach to making videos and the tone and structure that they use when delivering these videos. We still love this show, but we should not be delivering our opinions in a way that suggests that we might dislike the show or may suggest an overtly negative opinion which does not exist.

The most important thing is that we want the best for this show and everyone watching it. The analysis community has a part to play in holding the show accountable for its mistakes because of the implications these mistakes have (given the impressionability of MLP's devoted audiences). We want to uphold quality by telling people why certain episodes seem to work and others don't, and what makes this show special against other shows.

I agree with this. A lot.

But I don't think that Tommy is necessarily wrong. I think he can get a little more negative than a lot of people like, but I think that he does a decently good job at keeping himself level with his videos, which makes them fun to watch even if I don't always agree with him. I also think that he's absolutely right that most people seek these analysis videos for affirmation, not for pure analysis. I know that I have fallen into this trap.

I find it funny that he used a clip from one of Digibrony's season 4 videos (the one about Daring Don't, which was an episode that I didn't like very much either). "Am I getting jaded?" he asked. At the time, since I didn't like the episode much either, I didn't think so. But as the season progressed, that quote came back to me, and I felt like Digi was looking for too much to dislike, and he was letting what was happening in his own personal life influence his opinions on certain episodes. In short, I didn't think that they were fair analyses. And that's what really bothered me about him as I watched his videos. Eventually I just stopped because I wasn't enjoying his "analyses" anymore - they were more like bitching if you ask me.

So that's why I agree that tone and approach in making these videos makes a big, big difference. I think that it's good that Tommy is wondering these things himself, because I think that it helps keep him grounded. But overall, I think that analysis videos have an important place in the fandom, and as long as the people creating the content don't allow themselves to become too positive or too negative, it serves an important purpose, and that is the role of keeping the rest of us on our toes and remembering that scrutinizing our favorite thing in the world doesn't mean that we think that our favorite thing in the world is bad. It just means that we know that it can be better.

Oh, and if people in the community would just stop believing that analyzers like Tommy hold any kind of authority about how anyone else should feel about a particular episode, that would be great.

  2. While it's true that a college degree will not guarantee you a job, having a degree is, generally speaking, better than not having a degree.

    http://www.npr.org/2014/11/19/362802610/for-millions-of-millennials-some-college-no-degree-lots-of-debt

Recent study on how some college with debt (yet no degree) can be so much more damaging financially than a finished college degree.

I majored in creative writing and I knew that I wasn't going to get a job directly in that field. I worked during college as a student secretary in a college department on campus and that helped me gain administrative skills that I use in my current job. My current job is full time, although it doesn't make tons, I make an OK living and my husband and I are able to live comfortably.

I chose the college that I went to because I knew that they had a good music program, and I wanted to at least minor in it. I knew that I did not want to major in music, but I did want to study it and learn it and grow in my own skills. The experience that I had in the music program at my university was invaluable and I am so glad for it.

Sometimes having some kind of a degree is better than nothing at all, because it shows employers that you are able to set a goal and achieve it with self-discipline and hard work.

If you aren't totally sure what you'd like to do, or if you know that what you want to do isn't going to turn into a career, instead of "going away for college" and living in the dorms and getting the "college experience," my recommendation is to live at home and go to community college and get an associates in something that interests you. Also, work part-time while you are getting your associates, if at all possible. A community college is cheaper and you won't have to take out as many loans, if any. My husband got an associate's degree from the local community college and he did not take out student loans.

  3. I don't see anything wrong with appealing a specific demograph, if it's good, then it's good. There are many things boy centric that many consider good that girls happen to enjoy also. Same with Girl's shows, like My Life as a Teenage Robot, Kim Possible, and Sailor Moon, they're aimed at a female demograph yet all have male followings too(admittedly not to the degree of FiM but my point still stands.)

Plus didn't Lauren Faust say that the show teaches that "there is more than one way to be a girl"? (Admittedly I don't know if I'm using it in the same context :P)

Basically what I am saying is that I still think it's a show for girls, but that's not a bad thing, but it's designed with a wider appeal in mind. And just like the shows mentioned above it's for girls, it's a damn good one

Even if I am wrong at least I'll still believe it's designed with an emphasis on it's female audience

I think that when people say that "it's a show for girls," they mean, "it's a show ONLY for girls and you should feel bad for watching it because you're not a little girl."

Young girls are still the target audience for this show, and they still market the show in that way (there is marketing for bronies too but that's usually through 3rd party companies that Hasbro licenses). It's just that it's ridiculous to confine a TV show to one demographic and shun everyone outside of that demographic as being weird or creepy.

Also Sailor Moon is also not for little girls... despite what the 90's English dub may try to tell you. But that's another rant for another time (or, actually, you could read my blog post about it if you have the time).

  4. Going on Facebook and expecting people to be smart.

    Good luck with that.

One of the many reasons why I never ever joined Facebook.

I thought Facebook was bad. But then this comes along...

    They should've called it Facepalm.

This isnt even a problem with facebook. This is a problem with people, but thats a rant for another time.

And yes, you went on Facebook. What were you expecting? Its the same people who are yoloswag or 2qt

The thing is that I keep the stupidity out of arms' reach most of the time. I am really only friends with people who don't post stupid shit. It is possible that I take the intelligent people in my life - or at least on my friends' list - for-granted.

Yes it is definitely a problem with people. More specifically, people who don't seem to think about what they are saying before they post something on the Internet for the world to see. There is a reason why, before the Internet, the average Joe had no way to publicly express their opinions. It's because most people's opinions are pretty stupid and worthless. I include myself in this for many things, not because I think of myself as being stupid or worthless, but because who am I to comment on something that I really have no expertise in? I'd like to think that I try to limit my opinion-giving to topics that I am decently familiar with, but I may not even be judging that properly.

With all the other problems out there that need our attention it aggravates me that people obsess over trivial BS like that. A doll with a dick sure isn't going to screw up a kid but I am pretty sure getting felt up at the airport for "security" by a TSA agent probably will.

Absolutely. Seeing my brothers' genitals did not mess me up in any way when I was a child. In fact, I distinctly remember telling my mom one time, "It's a good thing that I know what a penis looks like so that when I have a baby I'll know if it's a boy or a girl!" I was GLAD to know the difference between male and female genitalia when I was a kid! I was not "scarred for life" or in desperate need of sex.

And yes, being patted down by a TSA agent would be a hell of a lot scarier as a small child, because you are afraid that you are in trouble on top of the fact that a strange person is touching you in strange places.

America continues to think that seeing a dick at an early age is going to break their tiny baby brains. Penis: Destroying your child since forever.

Makes me wonder if people think the opposite for boys - will seeing a baby vagina make a boy more likely to have sex as a teenager? Probably not, but if people who think that girls seeing dick at a young age will make them want sex as a teen DON'T think that boys seeing pussy at a young age will make them want sex too, then I smell sexism/double-standards.

I also saw a few posts about how boys don't play with dolls and people arguing with them. Also people saying that seeing a dick when they're little will make them gay. BECAUSE EVERYTHING ABOUT OUR SEXUAL ORGANS WILL LEAD US TO SEX SEX SEXXXX -_-

You should feel lucky, You're not browsing polish part of facebook. That would melt Your brain. Numerous times.

I am half-polish, granted I don't know any of the language except for paczki. Why would the polish part of Facebook make me melt my brain? I'm afraid of my curiosity right now...

  5. Nice review, Rockin Rarity. Yea I was quite pleased to hear the news for a return of the series in anime form in both a redux edition of the original (with an all new english dub to boot) and a new series as well.

It seems those haters of the new cartoon have a strong case of nostalgia goggles. In such cases it is best to try and show them the original series and this time ask them to critique the english dub for it's flaws and hopefully they'll realize that the english dub was actually pretty bad for the original and will be more accepting of the new english cast, which would be difficult to bring back the original english dub cast anyway as it's been what...20 years?

The DiC English dub was dubbed about 20 years ago, yeah. The Cloverway dub was more like 15 years ago (for Sailor Moon S and SuperS) but still, it was quite a while ago. Some of the dub voice actors were at Anime Expo although it was Linda Ballentyne instead of Terri Hawkes who was there (pretty much every mega Terri fangirl despises Linda, who voiced S and SuperS Serena), which made dubby fans worried that Linda would be the one redubbing. I personally liked Tracey Moore the best but that's because she was the closest to sounding like the original Usagi.

I am glad that I'm not the only one who thinks that it's just people wearing their rose-tinted nostalgia goggles. Dub lovers got offended when I said that they only like the dub either because of nostalgia or because they have really bad taste - that was a ridiculous Internet argument that I roped myself into. Oops. I guess I should be more tasteful in how I say stuff like that. XP

I think what bothers me the most about the nostalgia isn't the nostalgia itself, but rather the closed-mindedness and ignorance of the people who have a bad case of nostalgia. It upsets me, too, that these people would much rather cling to their childhood and preserve it like it's some kind of holy shrine rather than, I dunno, grow up? Why do people act like their childhood was the holiest endeavor that they have ever participated in? Don't get me wrong, I appreciate my childhood, but I would never want to go back. Nor do I want to indulge in horrible media just because I did during my childhood, ESPECIALLY if I KNOW that a better version of what I watched exists.

Some people refuse to watch the Japanese version of the show because they find the Japanese voices to be "annoying" or "too high-pitched" or "they don't like to read their shows". I think that showing the Japanese version to dubbies who have never seen the Japanese version before would be easier. But there are dubbies who do not want to give the Japanese version a chance. There is this weird subculture of people who are huge fans of stuff that comes from Japan, but bitch and moan about being forced to listen to Japanese audio. My husband sees this in the video game industry among fans of the Tales franchise. When it was announced that the latest game was going to have Japanese audio with English subtitles, people complained until they could complain no more. And it's like, why? Why are you getting so bent-out-of-shape about listening to Japanese voices? I mean, Heaven forbid that you be reminded that one of your favorite franchises comes from someplace other than America, right?

I just don't understand how people think that being closed-minded about trivial things like Japanese voices and English voice actors who aren't the same people as the English voice actors that people grew up hearing makes them happier people.

Is the joy of watching an emotional and powerful animated television show REALLY worth sacrificing over the preservation of your childhood? That's what I want to know.

  6. I wonder what would happen if those artists had watched Nostalgia Critic's sailor moon review, especially at the part that they're 14 years old (biggest shock in recent memory for me).

I have not seen this yet, but my husband watched it a while back and said that it was weird that they were only 14. But being only 14 is a good turn-off for him lol, as I imagine it would be for a lot of other people.

Makes pony porn seem more appropriate, lmao.

    • Brohoof 1
  7. I'm just dreading the second wave of Hentai this is going to cause. This time I have ponies to defend me XD

I'll probably be ignoring it like I always have, and like I do with clop. If Safe Search Wrap-Up becomes a necessity in the Sailor Moon fandom, then I'll participate in that, but that's as far as I'll go.

I dislike that R34 is a thing, but I recognize that my powers to stop it are fairly limited, so I try to focus my energy on bring about the change that I can instead of getting angry about it every time I see it. I suppose I should try to do the same thing with this particular fandom split.

  8. I like the Mac OS much better than windows. I bought a Macbook Air because it was the most portable computer with an SSD and had a 12h (more like 13h) battery life which was ideal for university next year. It runs absolutely silent and I really appreciate the fact that there's no vents on the bottom. Because of the minimal dust getting inside, my computer never gets hot (and since it's aluminum, the computer is cold when i turn it on and any heat generated gets dispersed). I have never experienced lag in a stream and I always have about 5+ programs running, and all I have is 4GB of RAM. Paired up with an i5 processor, I feel like this computer is fabulous for me. I don't game very much though, but I am very pleased with my Mac.

In terms of iOS7 and Android, I prefer iOS for 1) the compatibility with my mac for things like icloud and 2) the simplicity. Android was a bit too complicated and confusing for me, so thanks, Apple, for dumbing things down for me.

I can't tell if you are shitting on people for liking Apple or what, but everyone is free to buy whatever products they want whether they are informed about them or not (and when people buy products as expensive as Apple, they usually do their research... I sold computers and tablets and nobody bought Apple products on a whim).

Hey there - not shitting on people who buy Apple products. As I have said in the post:

"I understand wanting a Mac if you need special software only available on a Mac, or even if you prefer Mac and you feel like throwing your money at Apple - because it's not my business who you decide to support."

"You are allowed to prefer Apple based on your own personal taste, and you are definitely allowed to prefer Apple based on your software needs."

If those quotes come off as a bit snarky, I do apologize - but I really do genuinely mean what I say here.

My irritation about Apple is not targeted toward the people who know what they are looking for in a computer. You obviously do know, based on the fact that you know a fair bit about computer hardware and what kind of processor runs well, and the fact that you don't game makes Mac a good fit for you. To be fair, my friend's new Macbook Pro also has an i5 processor whereas mine is only an i3, so she did pay more money for a product that is technically better.

My irritation is with people who think that they're better than the rest of us because they own Apple products, and people who think that Apple products are immune from anything bad happening to them. I do think that some of that attitude has died down since I was in college - or maybe because I've graduated I've been able to escape the attitude instead. Whatever the case may be, the Mac vs. PC argument for some reason still exists in some form, and it's a pretty petty argument if you ask me.

I can't say that I blame you for liking the Mac OS better than Windows, though. I personally love Windows 7, but the fact that Windows keeps changing everything good about their OS and literally makes every other OS horrible (XP = good, Vista = bad, 7 = good, 8 = bad) doesn't sit well with me. Apple keeps their OS pretty consistent in quality, which I appreciate and I really really wish that Microsoft would take a hint. I knew that I wanted to get a Windows 7 computer but the average consumer isn't going to know what they are looking for and they'll just buy a brand new computer without knowing anything about it. So, really, I could make a similar rant about Microsoft too - but for them it's more that they take their long-standing user base for-granted and also take advantage of them because there are a lot of people who will just get a new computer with the latest version of Windows no matter what.

It's not so much that people buy Apple products "on a whim" without thinking at all, but rather I'm not sure if many people spend a lot of time evaluating their needs in a computer (or a phone) and just pay for whatever is the fanciest. My processor may not be the very best, but so far it's been good to me. I've not had any problems with lag or general slowness.

I have just experienced too much from people who tell me about their Apple products, and some of them make it sound like people who don't buy Apple products are making the wrong decision, or that PCs are bad and you should feel bad that you have one. The truth is that there aren't enough differences between a Mac and a PC for one to be objectively "better" than the other. Whether you choose one brand or the other should be based solely on your preferences and needs.

But if somebody wants a computer that just turns out to be a $2000 Facebook machine, that's their business. I just don't want anyone telling me that I should get one, too. As a writer, I could be justified in getting a Macbook based on my needs, but I found a tool for writing that is available on PC. But if my needs ever change to the point where a PC won't really cut it anymore, or there will never be a good Windows OS after Windows 7 after all, I'll probably invest in a Macbook one day. I do like them (and honestly, the fact that your Macbook Air is made of aluminum and it disperses heat generated from the computer is so friggin cool), but I don't see any reason to spend the money on one at this point in my life.

  9. I wonder what the SJW would have thought if your friend announced that she was biracial right off the bat...

I am not sure if that would have helped. My friend is half black half white, so to this SJW, by the other posts I have seen in her blog, she may think that anyone who has any bit of white in them is at least half-told that she is superior to other races? Or that because she is half-white that she is told that she is better than 100% black people but not as good as 100% white people and that's still bad?

I went back to her blog to look for some of the posts and I really wish that this interaction was the only mind-blowingly terrible thing that I saw on there.

I wrote this blog post because there is another SJW on Tumblr right now who said that a grown woman committing statutory rape multiple times to an 8 year old boy is actually the victim because the 8 year old boy is male and it couldn't be the woman's fault for having sex with the boy multiple times. So I wanted to rant about SJWs and use an example of a personal interaction.

But it just kinda made me angrier. :/

I just literally cannot fathom living life like you are fighting a battle against oppressive people, and in this battle, you are constantly making the first attack. I do understand, as a woman and as a religious person on the Internet and as a brony, that battles do need to be fought. But wisdom and experience have convinced me to always be on the defensive and to be honest and frank but not cruel. Because that is likely to win friendship, or at least respect from people who are different from yourself.

  10. I know what you mean. It also makes me wonder if some of these people have undiagnosed mental disorders like bipolar. I have no intention on using mental disorder as an excuse to wave away people's concerns ("Oh she thinks white people are racist? Well I hear she has bipolar disorder so that just makes her crazy!") but rather finding out if that is the case to be the beginning of solving a problem...

Yeah I think that people these days are being encouraged to "be yourself" and if "you can't handle me at my worst then you don't deserve me at my best."

I am thankful for a family life that fostered individual growth and maturity, along with a supportive community and good university sources that did the same. I am also thankful for Internet communities like this one that do the same.

I hope the young people here learn how to be better people. :)

  11. A couple things:

The order for procession should probably be:

    Groom

    Bridesmaids & Groomsmen

Matron of Honor and Best Man

    Ring Bearer & Flower Girl

    Stepfather & Bride

I say this because this is how most weddings are ordered... this is so that the matron of honor and best man can be seated right next to the bride and groom, making it easier for them to stand next to you as you say your vows. Also, that is traditionally the order, so for it to get mixed up might confuse people as they go down the aisle.

Is this a Christian wedding? If it is, maybe some of your songs should be songs that you would sing at church. Essentially the songs that my fiance and I have picked for our wedding praise God for his love and mercy for us because He is the one that has taught us these things, and we can celebrate our marriage together because of what He has done for us on the cross and in our lives.

And if you want my REALLY HONEST opinion... the reading that you picked is nice. But I think that it lacks depth. It uses powerful words like "sacred" and "eternally," but to what end? The poem does not convey why these things are true, or even practical application for achieving true love... because this poem also seems to treat love like an automatic and destined thing, where if the fire of love dies, then that must mean that it's not true love. But that is not true!! Again, if it is a Christian wedding, in my opinion, go with a reading from the book for First John chapter 4. That whole chapter talks about love of God and love of neighbor. If it is not a Christian wedding but some other religious wedding, then my suggestion would be to use a different religious reading about love.

But like I said, it is just my opinion, and you can take it or leave it. Because it is, after all, YOUR wedding. I am planning my own wedding so I don't need to try to make your wedding how I would like it, haha.

Good luck with all your planning. Don't procrastinate on stuff, don't go crazy, and don't shy away from getting people's RSVPs because you need your final count by a certain day and there are gonna be some people who just don't RSVP or they lost their invitation or it got lost in the mail... and choosing vendors who don't charge you an arm and a leg for their products is also a plus.

  12. Even if you did make mistakes at your job, I feel like those particular customers are overreacting.

I used to work for a bread bakery at the local left-wing city. A lot of the customers are older, super into whole grains and all natural foods and eating super healthy - and they can be very, well, entitled.

We once had a lady walk into the store and scream at us because the granola was not crunchy enough. We agreed eventually that it wasn't the best granola we could make, but yikes, that was like treating a petty fight between siblings like a murder. You'd think that she was yelling at us because we stole $1000 from her, not charging her 6 bucks for mediocre granola.

People can let the tiniest things bother them. I have yet to understand why people choose to do that to themselves. You feel like a much happier person if you can just let the little stuff like that roll off your back.

I don't like bad customer service myself. But I would never complain to a manager unless there was a serious problem - like if an employee swore at me or yelled at me, or if there was any other kind of harrassment or abuse involved.

I will say, though, that the customers who get visibly angry at little things are few and far between. I know - those are the ones you remember, but they are definitely not the majority.

  13. Keep Calm and Flutter On and Magical Mystery Cure were actually my favorite episodes from season 3. XD But I definitely agree with you that they were rushed, and I wish that they didn't have to be. But being rushed was pretty much my only problem with the episodes.

I agree with you about pretty much everything else. I liked the video, but I feel like the guy who made it totally forgot that at the end of KCaFO, Discord said to himself after agreeing to be good, "Most of the time." Discord did not completely turn over - he simply decided that he should be more considerate of Fluttershy's and other ponies' feelings before causing mass chaos whenever he so desired. I am certain that he will do a little something "fun" here and there... if he ever shows up again, which I hope he does lol.

  14. Thank you for your kind words! I appreciate the compliments. :)

The Catholic Charismatic Renewal is a big deal in certain circles. But my understanding is that there are not as many Catholic Churches who really understand what it is, and most of it appeals to younger crowds because it breaks away from boring traditional Catholicism. Being the moderate that I am, I believe that both forms of worship have their place.

The pentecostals are to thank for the charismatic renewal, but some of their theology is... interesting.

Charismatic Catholic services, Masses, prayer meetings, etc are hard to find. I can think of 2 that are 20 miles or less from my house, but my area is a bit of an anomaly. The charismatic renewal started at Duquense University in Pittsburgh, so there may be something there. I am not sure where you are from but there may or may not be something in your area. Might have to go digging.
