  1. Death Star Celestia... That is too awesome! XD ....I'll resist the temptation to make a 'small thermal exhaust port' joke here. Anyway... these episodes were top notch. Probably my favorite of all the season openers. We got some Equestrian history, we got plenty of action, Discord was a boss, and it left us with the mysterious d12 thingy at the end which will thread nicely for future eps. The whole thing was just epic, they really kicked it up a notch in that respect. Even the animation seems to have gotten an upgrade; you could really feel that during the battle scene between Celestia and Nightmare Moon. I also like how Discord walked a very fine line between good guy and villian. In the end he was a good guy, but he still maintained his nature as a capricious creature of chaos.
  2. We're talking 15 years ago for me, and honestly it wasn't as important for me as it was for college. I don't remember much from my first day at highschool. All I can remember is walking to school with my best friend who I went to middle school with, and then I remember waiting outside the gym (because gym was my first class of the day), it was like 7 am and it was dark and freezing, and we were all kind of huddled there waiting for them to open the doors for us. So, yeah, for me highschool wasn't that important. People glorify it like this a super special time in your life, but honestly, college was way more important for me personally.
  3. It gets worse when you become an old fart like me. I actually kick myself now for all those night that I stayed up until 5 am just frittering around on the internet. Now I actually wish I could go to bed around midnight and wake up at 8 am and not be tired. I mean I've had to make major life changes just so I can get up in the morning like everyone else. I try to exercise and make myself eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and melatonin also helps, but even then I still like to have a five hour energy drink right when I get out of bed... but those things are so expensive, especially if you're needing one every morning, though I guess the same is true for coffee drinkers. Bottom line kids, don't be like me... stop watching anime and go to bed on time like your parents told you! Your future self will thank you for it.
  4. So many awesome fan animations have come out in just the last week. And heres the latest from JanAnimations! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2VhC1QF7ww I love this! I've been waiting for it for a while. I was hoping that it would be a singular storyline rather than a anthology of short scenes, but this is still awesome!
  5. From what I have seen and heard about Lauren Faust... well she strikes me as the kind of person that probably has mild depression (pure speculation on my part). MLP was her baby, and losing it was more than a little hard to take. I can kind of understand her reaction. I mean getting a cartoon off the ground is stressful and if I were in her shoes... heck I might have said the same thing. I'd be interested to know what the follow up reactions on Twitter were like.
  6. Kenpachiramasama why didn't you do your math homework!?

  7. A little something I whipped up. Captions are magic. I hope we get a Luna song in season 4. Darn it season 4, why you no come out till winter?
  8. I was also waiting for this to come out for a long time, and while it is good, I think I would have been more blown away by it had it just come from out of nowhere rather than having almost a years worth of hype surronding it. Still I'm intrigued by the whole premise. Luna wanted to create her own kingdom of night, but Celestia forbade this; having two seperate kingdoms, one for night and one for day instead of one kingdom with a day and night cycle would cause a rift in Equestria. But Luna disobeyd and took all the orphans of the kingdom away to form her new kingdom. And this is what started the schism between the two sisters. Good stuff.
  9. So we know that Blue Blood has been reffered to as Celestia's nephew, but if he is her biological nephew than it brings up some nagging questions. Does that mean Luna is Blue Blood's mother? Or does Celestia have another sibling? Why isn't Blue Blood an alicorn? Is he immortal or capable of living for a thousand years like Celestia? These questions, I think, are troublesome for the story to work around, and I think it is better to assume that the two are not biologically related. I can't confirm it, but as I understand Lauren Faust herself has said that Blue Blood and Celestia are not biologically related (again I don't have cofirmation of that), which is think is good and the right path to take. That leaves us with a few options. One, Prince Blue Blood is adopted and was raised in the castle by Celestia and other retainers. Or two, being a 'nephew' of the Princess is an honorific title of some sort. I used to be in favor of 'nephew' as being an honor title, perhaps the equivalent of being a duke. But now I'm starting to like the idea of Blue Blood being adopted. My headcanon thinking here is that there might have been some prophecy surronding Blue Blood, and Celestia took him in so she could groom him to complete that prophecy. But perhaps the prophecy was misread, and Blue Blood just ended up being a spoiled brat. Thoughts?
  10. Yes, though I think the ponies use hybridized magic and technology. They can make a few purely technological devices, but these tend to be on par with the 1800s. Higher forms of technology, such as movies, modern sound systems and lighting, video games, and also Twilight's gadgets, are more magic based. It did strike me as a little unusual that Twilight didn't know how to work a vending machine in the human world. But maybe the inspiration of seeing a vending machine could prompt Twilight to build a magical equivalent in Equstria. There's parts of Equstrian technology that almost hint at cultural tendancies; their highest technologies seem to be for medical purposes and to a lesser extent, entertainment, while the guards are still using spears and armor. Almost like the thought of war is so alien to them that they don't spend a great deal of time thinking up new technologies for killing.
  11. Well let me be the first to say that I could be considered an alcoholic. I like the sauce, and I have found it hard to say no to invitation to drink. And I have done a few crazy things... nothing dangerous, just silly stuff that you laugh about the next day. I used to be very vehemently anti-alcohol when I was a teenager... but that was a long time ago and things have changed. When I was a teenager I wouldn't go near a dance. But nowdays, get a few drinks in me and I'll be in the center of the dance floor. Granted it helps that I only dance at conventions where I'm amongst people that are like me. And also... nobody likes the taste of alcohol. Not even die hard alcoholics. Basically your favorite drink is whatever you find goes down easiest. Some like beer because you can eventually became tailored to the taste, while others prefer a shot of hard alcohol and just get it down fast. To that end, my drinks of choice are Jagermesiter, or Crater Lake Vodka (which I consider superior to Grey Goose). For beer I prefer Corona... and of course any kind of hard cider is good.
  12. Yes I am going. By the seat of my pants, and so help me I'm going to be working hard to get my credit card debt under control, but I am going! I have a room at the Clarion but it looks like I missed pre reg so I'll have to pay at the door. I'll be wearing a 'two-of-hearts' card on my shoulder so I should be pretty easy to spot. Anyone can come up and say hi. I'll hopefully be with a none brony friend of mine who wants to come.
  13. Yes I enjoyed the movie. No not stellar but definitely enjoyable; it plays like an extra long episode with a few more bells and whistles than normal, and while it doesn’t break the mold of a typical episode I’d say it fills it comfortably enough. My expectations going in were low. I was firmly against the whole premise from the beginning. I hated the human character designs; to me they looked too much like Bratz Dolls, which have always evoked feelings of visceral hatred in me. Worse was the whole high school thing… I hated high school. I watched Star Wars, and played Warhammer, and other other-worldy geeky pursuits because that was my REFUGE from high school, my escape. And now they were taking these pony characters that I’ve learned to love and cherish… and interjecting them into that environment, basically turning them into stereotypes to sell toys, well it just seemed like poison from the start. But I got objective, I watched it, and it was good. Key I think is that the characters never seemed to quite fall into the stereotype mold that I was afraid they were falling into. The characters were the same despite their new outward appearances; their souls were present and intact. That mostly only applies to the Mane 6 though. Criticisms about Flash and Sunset being underdeveloped I think are fair… though… there was just enough in them that I accepted them in the end. For Sunset it was the part where we see pictures of her from freshmen to junior year, her freshmen year she has the crown and has this expression like, ‘oh this is cool,’ then sophomore year she has the crown again and she thinks ‘oh this suits me,’ then by junior year she’s become tyrannical about the whole prom princess thing and she’s laughing manically… it was funny and it also showed her path to the dark side in a weird way. As for Flash. The part I liked was when Twilight tells him she can’t go to the dance with him (because she has to get back to the portal). Twilight runs off and Flash, dejected, says ‘one no would have been enough.’ …Here we had the handsome prom king, he can have any girl he wants, and here he is… getting rejected by the geeky girl. It was a weirdly inverted moment. It made me feel strangely closer to Flash. It made me ask: ‘why are you even going after the geeky girl?’ which just made me think… well maybe there is more to Flash than meets the eye. And yes I am a Twilight/Flash (Flashlight?) hopeful… but we are going to have to round out that character some more young man. So yeah, it felt like a good multipart episode in movie form, and it definitely provided a much needed between season fix. Thats too bad. Yeah he did need some serious character building but I think there was potential for him, and I was actually kind of intrigued by the FlashLight relation.
  14. Soarin is best pones. ...although he did totally blow it at the Galla. He could have had Rainbow Dash necking him all night long if he had just given her more than just 'thanks for saving my pie.'
  15. If I was still 20 years old, my answer would have been pretty much like most of the others on this thread: clubbings not for me, I’m very shy, I’m anti-social, I never drink, why would I want to be around a bunch of douche bags who would never accept me anyway, etc. But I’m 30 now and things have changed. I voted sometimes, because the only time I go clubbing is when I’m at a furry convention, a sci fi convention, or an MLP convention, which usually only happens once a year. I’m a LOT more comfortable going to a club where I know the people are predominantly geeks like me. I wish I could afford to go to more conventions. (Finding a club that caters to ‘your kind of people,’ be you a sci fi geek or MLP fan or whatever, quickly makes clubbing seem like the best thing ever) In high school I was the arc typical loner. I was afraid of people, afraid they would reject me or be mean to me, and I thought that I would spend all my days avoiding other people. But this was high school and that was a long time ago. After college I basically said, ‘look, at this point I’m smarter than more than half the world’s population and the people that were popular in high school, well their time has come and gone. I don’t need to be afraid of people anymore because I’ve come to realize that most of the world’s population is rock stupid and I don’t need to be concerned about what they think about me.’ A good rule of thumb, no matter how confident the other people on the dance floor look, they are probably just as insecure as you are. And yes, I became a drinker, but 99% of the time when I drink it’s just me on the computer writing or watching dvds, which I’m quite content with. The other one percent is when I go to cons, where I actually get to have fun with the social aspect of alcohol. Alcohol lets you cut loose; you do fun things that you would be afraid to do otherwise, and yes while there is a dark side to alcohol, 99% of the time you just end up being silly and talkative and having an awesome time. On a side note: NOBODY ‘likes’ the taste of alcohol. It still tastes bad even if you’re a die hard alcoholic. Basically your favorite drink is whatever you feel goes down easiest (which for me would be Crystal Lake Vodka, or Jagermeister). Look, I’m a terrible dancer. Couldn’t dance to save my life, but put a few drinks and me and I’m in the center of the dance floor, and somehow, despite my horrid dancing… people still seem to have fun when I’m around… and that’s a pretty awesome feeling.
  16. I'm not very big into military history, nor can I say I have favorite battles. My focus has always been western intellectual and philosophical history. But that being said I guess my Dad's Vietnam war stories kind of count, although he didn't participate in any famous battles like the Tet Offensive, he did fire his mortar at the enemy. I think my favorite story he told me was this one time he got called up for a mortar strike. They put their shells down range, and afterwards a general (yes a general) came up to my dad and asked who had been shooting the mortars. My dad just about crapped himself because he thought for sure he had messed up big time. Still my dad said that he had shot the mortar and the general shook his hand and told him that was some of the best artillery gunnery that he had ever seen. Oh but if you want me to list more conventional historical battles. Battle of Stirling Bridge… yes in part because of Braveheart, but also because I’m a descendent of John de Warren, one of the English generals that was defeated by Wallace… yes my dad is so big into genealogy that he actually listed all of John de Warren’s descendents all the way to my Great Great Grandma. And he has a hand drawn family tree that he made in college to prove it. Its actually kind of a tired inside joke, but whenever my dad catches me watching Braveheart when its on tv, he always says something like ‘oh watching your ancestors get whooped huh?’ and I’m like, yeah yeah dad I know know. October War/Yom Kipper War – Yeah its war not a battle, though it’s almost to the point of being a very large battle verses a small war. This is the last battle/war that actually piqued my interest enough to read up on, so I guess it makes this list. The Israel/Palastine conflicts are interesting to me because the Israelis are badass, and the Yom Kipper War is interesting because it had a lasting legacy in choice of military hardware for Muslim extremists… The RPG-7. Why do the Taliban and other Muslim militant groups stock up on RPGs? Well it goes back to the Yom Kipper War. The Egypitions had fewer tanks than the Israelis but they had bought up tons of RPG launchers. Although the Israelis were eventually victorious, Egyption infantry with RPGs were able to put a huge dent in Israeli armored forces, and after the war the militants of Islam looked at the RPG and said ‘yeah, this thing works… get more of them.’ Battle of Tours – Charles the Hammer routs the invading Muslims from France. Cool and all, but I mostly like this battle just because one of my history professors would always get so worked up when talking about it. “Charles Martel… Charles the HAMMER! Because he crushed the invaders!” …yeah, it was just fun seeing my professor that animated.
  17. Yes I'm still here, yes I'm trying to post more.

  18. Hmmm... well, I'm an old person and I've been in love twice (actually I'm still in love with the second person). The first person I fell in love with... well it turns out she had always had a boyfriend and she thougt of me as a friend (friendzoned from the start with that one). The second one... well I'm not sure... yes I'm in love with her but I'm so jaded and cynical over the first crushing heartbreak I had that I don't 'pursue' her more, and at this point I'm pretty sure I am friendzoned with her also.
  19. Well... way back in the 80s I used to play with G1 ponies with my cousin... today I found out she is pregnent... that was kind of a wtf for me.
  20. For me, the best 'weird movies' are the ones that make no sense at all, and yet at the same time leave you with annoying questions that make you want to follow up and do internet searches on what the writers were trying to convey. With that criteria in mind I offer three movie titles. Eraserhead - Yup, its already been mentioned in this thread several times and yes its a damn weird movie. The thing is, even if you start with the premise that 'this movie makes absolutely no sense' you're still going to try to analyze it and try to break it down and explain it, and you just end up feeling foolish in the end... cause honestly this movie is pretty much pointless. Videodrome - Death to Videodrome, long live the new flesh!!! LOL, I like this movie despite its somewhat dissapointing ending. I'd say this movie is open to interpretation but I think this movie is mostly about how we are more or less controlled by what we see on tv and other electronic media (like the internet)... but thats just my take, and it is ultimately a bizzaro (albeit enjoyable) movie. Donnie Darko - I had to watch this movie several times before I finallly understood what was going on, but unlike Eraserhead and Videodrome, you can eventually zero in on what this movie is about. Simply put: this is a movie about someone who gives up his life to save the life of another... and that's that.
  21. She's going to control huuuuuuuuuuge.... .... tracks of land. (Holy Grail ref) I'm going to go with Friendship. Because by default Friendship IS Magic and friendship is the root of the type of magic that most epitomizes her and her friends. As for harmony, that seems like something that ALL the princesses work to maintain.
  22. I find the undercurrent of division between the three pony races to be fascinating and I wish the show would examine it more closely... probably won't happen though, but the fact that some kind of racism actually does exist in Equestria makes it a more interesting place. What long established canon? If Twilights destiny wasn't to be an alicorn princess then what was? Based on the series progression, Twilight becoming an alicorn seems like a logical step to me. Twilight being an alicorn doesn't mean that she has godlike powers. As I said in my essay, I think there are alicorns, and then there are Alicorns. Luna and Celestia stand apart even from their own rare breed. At first glance her friends seem to support it, but I'm hoping they'll delve into this issue more in season 4. It COULD cause division in the Mane 6, and thats good story fodder. Perhaps, but this is typical when a show adds a new animated feature. Its first appearance isn't always its finalized appearance. They'll probably work the bugs out. Who is smack dab in the middle, who has the big hunkin crown thingy? Twilight has been the prime focus from the very beginning. And with the elements she's already more or less invincible. All their enemies can do is try to drive a wedge between their friendships; which Twilight's alicorn status gives them a new angle to work with. Yes Twilight has always been one of the more humble of the 6, but thats part of why she's destined for greatness. Its almost Biblical, the humble being raised up, uncertain and afraid. Enemies will try to corrupt her using Pride, and she will now have to wrestle with the greatest of the seven deadlies. But because she is humble she can fight it and she can win. Ehh, but everyones opinions on this are valid. I'm not going to change anyone's mind, and I am sort of wishing the alicorn thing had never happened if only for the fact thats it caused so much division in the fandom. And btw, none of this post is meant to be mean or belittiling in any way, I do respect your opinions on this, I'm just being debative and your post was one of the more well thought out ones. Edit: Well ok she's slightly lower middle but she does rise up and this was the only pic I could find on short notice.
  23. It does definetly spark my interest. MLP was meant to be a show for young (age 4-8) American girls, and so it was designed to be very very PC. A Japanese Manga will quickly do away with any semblence of PC or target age demographic. Bronies have been kind of back and forth on this issue: some want MLP to be more hardcore and geared towards and older audience, others want MLP to stay innocent. And I'm pretty sure a Japense Manga will swing more heavily in the direction of 'hardcore and geared towards an older audience.'
  24. So I'm sure most of us are aware that Ashleigh Ball (voice actress for Applejack and Rainbow Dash) is in an Indie band called Hey Ocean, but in case you havn't heard: Ashleigh Ball is in an Indie band called Hey Ocean. Hey Ocean has enjoyed modest success and generally favorable reviews by brony and non-brony critics alike. Hey Ocean themselves seem to be very pro-brony, and I don't think even they deny that MLP has really helped get their name out there. Now it was hard for me to approach this band when I first heard of them because I already had a ton of preconceptions and bias in favor of Ashleigh Ball, and if there's one thing I really try to approach as neutrally as possible its music. This proved impossible with Hey Ocean beacuse no matter what, everytime I hear Ashleigh sing I hear Rainbow Dash and Applejack. And even though I love hearing Rainbow Dash and Applejack sing, it just left me with this nagging feeling that I'm only liking this band because I'm a brony. Eventually though I came to the conclusion that I do indeed like this band with or without the existance of MLP. True I wouldn't have spent time watching their videos without MLP, but, ehh. To be honest though, I do think its fun to think of Rainbow Dash and Applejack singing a lot of these songs. No the songs don't really fit them... and yet at the same time... they kind of do... deeper down inside. Like this song for example, I tend to think of Rainbow Dash laying on a cloud and thinking of Soarin, and if someone overheard her singing like this she would totally deny it... yeah I'm corny like that. So what do you think of Hey Ocean?
  25. Animals love getting drunk! Yup it happens in the wild. Fermentation of wild fruit can occur a number of differant ways and often times the local animals seem to be aware of it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D5E5TjkDvU0
