• Abedias Dalkrin

    Dalkrin-the-Wanderer
    • Age: 30

      Gender: Male

      Species: Non-Pony

      Appearance:
Abedias Dalkrin is an Old World Gryphon. Thus he is smaller than the Gryphonstone Gryphons and more closely resembles Corvids over Raptors. His head feathers are a deep glossy grey/blue and his beak is thin and slightly hooked. His eyes are a piercing blue with white flecks. His hind quarters are more lithe with thick grey fur for the colder northern climates that his kind live in, with a long bushy tail ringed with thin white stripes. His forelimbs are narrow and black without the dangerous claws of his larger cousins.

      Cutie Mark:
<img alt="5b078a3e8c14d_CutiemarkD20.png.aecc579307c9a55ced615af460ef9c65.png" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" data-fileid="255338" height="100" src="<fileStore.core_Attachment>/monthly_2018_05/5b078a3e8c14d_CutiemarkD20.png.aecc579307c9a55ced615af460ef9c65.png" width="100" />
While he doesn't have a Cutie Mark of his own, in his studies he has devised one of his own and has it affixed to his belongings in much the same way a pony does. The dodecahedron in the rear is a tellers stone, used by shaman in his tribe to forecast the future and read destinies. The red quill occluding it represents his struggle to understand and record the true nature of Cutie Marks and their meanings.

      Personality:
Dalkrin is an Inquisitive mind with much to learn. He seeks new knowledge, even if it may put him in danger. He trusts freely and handles betrayal poorly. He can be quick to anger when frustrated, often becoming short and terse. This rarely leads to anything but if he is pushed long enough he can loose his cool quite spectacularly. He has an academic understanding of the concept of subtlety, often blundering his way through social interactions, though he is often the first to realize his missteps.

      Backstory:
Born the runt of a clutch of five, Abedias barely escaped death just scant hours after birth. When the elders ordered him abandoned, It was only by the love of his mother that he was spared. His mother swore to see to his needs herself so as to spare the Colony the strain. In all the rest of her days, she continued to provide Abedias with everything she could and he grew to be a strong young Gryphon, just like his siblings.

He was inquisitive. From the very moment he could stand he would wander about and investigate everything that caught his attention. When he learned to speak, the questions began, and they did not stop. His mother, ever patient would answer as best she could but always cautioned him to never question the Elders or the Shaman. As he grew, he held to her advice and only asked her such questions as how, and why. And she would always answer but soon, she began to run out of answers. She was not curious like he was and soon, he knew all that she did and she could not answer his questions any more.

The rest of his family were less patient as he began to ask them and would often ignore him or, in the case of his father, cuff him across the beak for asking such things. So he learned not to ask.

Then, when he came of age, along with the rest of his clutch he was to participate in a ritual that would tell his role in the Colony that he would perform for the rest of his days. The five of them went to the Shaman's hill and were painted many colors, each according to their birth order. Abedias was third and was painted gold and red. The curiosity burned in him. he had to know but he held his beak, hoping that things would become clear so long as he watched carefully.

The Shaman lifted a bundle of burning grass and waved it about. Abedias watched and still did not ask. The Shaman Drew odd Glyphs on the ground in exacting patterns and still, Abedias did not ask. He watched and analyzed. Finally, after chanting prayers to the elders past, he cast a golden many sided stone, on each of its surfaces were etched shapes and Abedias watched, his breath held as the Shaman told the first sibling their place. Then he cast the stone again, and Abedias watched again, and the Shaman told the next sibling their place.

Finally, it was Abedias' turn and now, with all that he had seen he had no incling of how the Shaman knew what each of them should do and his curiosity was so strong that he forgot his mother's warning.

He asked.

There was silence. The Shaman, stone still held in his claw stared, wide eyed at Abedias. His siblings glared at him and scooted away from him. The silence dragged on until the Shaman, so quiet that Abedias didn't hear at first, demanded he leave. When Abedias didn't move, the Shaman flew into a rage, swinging claws and fists at Abedias who scrambled for the exit.

He sought his mother, who held him and tried to comfort him but it was clear that she was just as scared as him, though for different reasons.

That night, the Elders came. Led by the Shaman, they demanded Abedias be brought forward. His siblings where there when they came and when Abedias turned to them, they turned their beaks down at him. His mother argued for leniency but the Elders would not be swayed again. Abedias was cast out that night. Never allowed to return on pain of death. His mother tried to follow him but he knew she shouldn't leave the flock just for him. They would be less without her.

Abedias left and made his way to Gryphonstone. It was there that he encountered ponies for the first time. His curiosity was piqued but he held his tongue. The last question he asked had lost him everything. He found many new things while there. The Gryphons had made writing. He had seen written things before but he never learned to read them. Over the next several years, he taught himself to read. he watched others read, took note of the shape of the words and what sounds they meant. He found the old library with it's dilapidated shelves and read every legible book he could find.

In his learning, he found out about Cutie Marks and what they were to the ponies. they told their destiny. If they had cutie marks, maybe he did too. He resolved that day to find out and the first step...

He went to the next pony he saw, and with great fear, but even greater determination...

He asked...
