  1. We are firmly entrenched in an era of 3D CGI thanks to Pixar and Dreamworks among others. A sort of second renaissance for animated movies. But it came at the cost of the first. The peak of 2D animated movies during the 90s, when Toy Story beat out Pocahontas. 2D animation was never given the same kind of care as their 2D counter parts. Atlantis, Treasure Planet, Brother Bear, Spirit, Prince Of Egypt, Sinbad. This was pretty much the last batch of 2D films before the trend died in the mid 2000s. What have we gotten since then? The Princess and the Frog? The MLP movie? The odd Studio Ghibli film? But what if that didn't happen? What if 3D looking CGI films just didn't catch on? Where would 2D animated movies be? What changes would we have seen? Would the industry still be flourishing like it is today? Or would it have petered out? And what films would have benefited from the 2D style today?
  2. I've bumped into something - I'll need to place BOSS HP BAR somewhere, but the current HUD gave me a bad time organizing the layout. Sooooo yeah, I've been thonking on the HUD again, because why not. For a reference, this is how it looked like so far: I was trying to put it somewhere to the right, but the screen was getting somewhat clogged up. ...So I've tried to place is somewhere at the bottom - the spells were on my way. Also I was toying with the general design (see the top-left corner). Red for the HP Bar seems to work better, considering that other bars have colors based on the icons attached to them. The green was out of place there. But getting back to the BOSS HP Bar--- I've tried to move the spells to the top, to have everything in one corner... ...and here made some more science as well, to make it all more compact. PLEASE KEEP IN MIND, that IN ALL DESIGNS the breath bar disappears once Twi leaves water. You won't see that bar most of the time, hence why it doesn't have to be nicely attached to the rest of elements. Also I was thinking on the spell icons - maybe instead of these little bars representing energy, they could have that in their backgrounds? That seems to be making it easier to tell how much energy do the spells have. ...But it still appears kind of messy, doesn't it? So I took a suggestion I got ages ago into consideration - that Twi's face isn't needed there. I tried simplifying the design... ...and was checking if fancy boss hp bars would be a good idea... Looks cool! -I think, but it's too distracting, so I believe going with minimalist design will work better. As for the rest--- hmm... not sure, maybe trying something different? Let's flip some things! There, It looks really simple, but it doesn't cover that much of space. It's just practical and considering, that there may be many things happening on screen, I think this is what I'll go with, at least for now, hah; Pretty sure I'll be adjusting things again in the future. So yeah, this is what I got lately. What do you think about these funny designs? That's all for now! Thanks for visiting! Also I'm terribly sorry for my grammar and English in general, it's past 7 AM and I'm really, really tired. Going to sleep now.
  3. It's been a while ~ As you may know, I've been working on the pause menu. When it was ready, I was able to configure/update existing features, as well as add new ones to make it all work properly. So now I have bunch of updates! First of all, let's start with that Pause Menu I've been working on for a while I believe everything there is self-explanatory. If you're wondering how many languages will be supported - by 'default' I aim into supporting these two: English and Polish. However! I'm programming the game in a way, where all the text is stored in external .ini files and visuals are adjusted based on the text's real width where necessary, which should make it less painful to translate, so if anybody would be ever interested in translating the game to another language, there always will be that possibility. ------ but that all will come in the right time... or not... I'll see how it goes. The next thing, related to the Pause Menu is Spell Enhancing. In short, you get some-kind-of-magic stars through leveling up. These stars are used to enhance (upgrade) spells. Enhancing may: - increase damage - amount of projectiles - their duration - their speed - their size - "Area of Effect" - add special effects - or even change spell behavior - etc.. Each spell is different, so are their upgrades. For example, I've prepared a some kind of a tier table for the basic spell, the magic projectile: And now the recent thing I've been working on... Leveling UP now raises stats and stuff. Previously leveling up wasn't doing anything other than increasing your "Level" value. Now it does have an effect, as seen below: I also did some smaller adjustments in meanwhile, like optimizing the code here and there (including collisions ... again -- and I'm sure I'll still have to adjust these once again in the future..) ~ but that's something you won't find interesting. Oh and I also started working on the Everfree Forest. It's too early to show anything though, but sooooomething is happening there. And that's all I think... Well for some testing I also made Tom ...If Tom could throw a party, it would ROCK! An amazing addition, I'll throw it in the title. So now it's all I think. Thank you for visiting!
  4. Programming Pause Menu in progress... > also implemented 'pause' --- , so that everything stops while the menu is opened. > also added background && shading to Twilight's Profile Pic in the menu --- now it doesn't look that plain. > also configured fonts --- now that was time-consuming, I had to nicely align each character, then load that to the project properly. For example, here's my hand-drawn font for GUI with just few characters: The font used in the commands however, uses small and large cases, numbers and all the potentially needed characters for dialogues and such... It is also hand drawn, for the most part at least. I used an existing font to start with. ...Comic Sans turned out to be pretty good for a pixel font. Well, that's all for now! Thank you for visiting!
  5. Hmm.. so after few days of wondering on how things will work like, I think the pause menu will look like this: Of course the ABCDEF thing will be replaced by proper description of highlighted option/item/spell. What these below spells are? These determine the spell's tier. Basically you'll be able to improve them along with progress, sometimes it will be a slight change, sometimes a major difference in behavior and whatsoever. To give you an idea on how more or less it will work like, here's the table I've prepared for the basic spell: is TIER I is TIER II is TIER VI -and if someone is wondering what "A-F SPD" means, it stands for Auto-Fire Speed. This spell doesn't have auto-fire, hence [ - ]. This is what Element of Laughter specializes in, for example. Anyway, as you can see, not much changes there, as basically it's a 'default' spell. It gains damage, speed and size, but still behaves as a normal straight projectile. Note, that things may be changed in the future, as I suspect I'll keep re-balancing things over and over again along with progress (development-wise). I probably won't be updating this, nor posting more tables, because nu spoilers for you. It is meant to be discovered on your own. Thank you for visiting!
  6. Hello everypony! Finally the HUD has been reprogrammed! ~And length of the HP bar increases along with maximum HP! For some reason I always like that little feature in games, because that makes increasing max HP more interesting --- especially checking if you can go off-screen with this. I thought it all will take few hours, but it ended up taking two days, heh. Why it took so long? I had to replace most of the HUD graphics in game files and reprogram the HUD in general, mostly spell icons, due to their new switching animation. I also have optimized the code, now it's shorter, organized better, thus more efficient & readable. I also have added some script functions that will come in handy when programming features in the future. ...Also I discovered, that previously there were two typos in the code. It wasn't a big deal, as things still worked in the end without crashing the game, nevertheless it's of course better to not have any of this floating in the code. I guess this design will do, at least for now. And as always, thanks for visiting!
  7. This pose is really hard that it took me an hour and a half to get it right Just a weekend drawing after a busy week in uni, enjoy Apple Bikini if that's your thing.
  8. I generally avoid posting here because of how I never get any feedback, but I want to see if this is any different. I'd highly appreciate verbal feedback, not just a brohoof by itself. (Title idea based off a suggestion by my brother)
  9. BETA 1.0 This is a NES-like Platformer Shooter similar to Contra. Two brothers are 'kidnapped' to the Game World by The Virus. It asks them to gather data from various games, which would grant it more power. Once the request will be fulfilled, the brothers will be brought back to real world. But what will happen next? Is the game world in danger? Do Super Coolstory Brothers find another way? > Unique Gameplay! (As for RPG Maker) Engine' scripts are totally reprogrammed > LOCAL MULTIPLAYER! > Bring Back Memories From Your Childhood! > Original Soundtracks! > Original Sound Effects! > Old-school gameplay! (8-bit style) COLOSSAL ANT - A murderous ant. For some reason it damages humans when touched and HOLY BALLS! It takes few bullets to kill and is annoying to hit! Drastically upscaled so you can see. Spuder - Dis Spuder can shoot cobwebs all over the place. It can't aim properly to be honest. Wox - A hybrid of a wolf and a fox. This cute dogie will gladly run through hug you. Rock - It has hard character. It wants to prove, that you don't need life to move and not be grounded. SMALL DATA CHIP - Increases DATA value by 1 BIG DATA CHIP - Increases DATA value by 3 SMALL HEART - Restores HP by one heart BIG HEART - Restores HP by three hearts 1UP - Gives one Extra Life Time - Gives some Extra Time Planned Items: Heart Container - Increases maximum life by one heart Super Coolstory Bros! BETA 1.0 IMPORTANT NOTE Google Drive and related to it sites assume, that this file is dangerous. That's because games made in the 'RPG Maker' series have an uncommon file type (custom compression), which isn't trusted by antiviruses. It even says, that the file is dangerous right after I create it, which is ridiculous. Nevertheless, I don't take any responsibility for potential harm. I'm just letting you know how things look like, but it's worth to be careful anyway.
  10. Hey there. Recently I've been really getting into Gravity Falls and the best character in the show in my opinion, Bill Cipher. And being as i am, I'm wanting to try and create a game based on the show but mainly the character Bill Cipher himself. It would be made in unity and i can program it but the big issue that i always have is I never have assets for the game which is why I'm requesting if anyone would like to help me on this small project and create for me assets for the game plus credit. The only problem that I feel will put people off is this isn't going to be a big game or something I'm going to get people to buy or anything XD. Most of the games i create are mainly for training purposes to train my programming skills and the thing I want to do is create a 2D Boss fight against Bill Cipher from Gravity Falls. Nothing big but a challenge for me. You could also use this opportunity for training reasons also. The type of art Style I want is basically pixel art but with higher...detail i guess you could say then normal pixel art. Like this: But we could easily just lower the quality if you are unable to do that type of pixel art but please have at least a some experience with pixel art. I'll explain more in a PM if your interested but just reply to this topic if you are. If you also have questions then feel free to ask. Thanks
  11. I typically work in 3d but I have tried branching out into more illustrative work using my 3d skills as a tool. I was wondering if I could get some critique and/or opinions on my two takes on the same picture. Which do you like better? What conveys the image best for your? If you're going more technical what does or doesn't work and why in X picture? I am always trying to learn and improve so this is just another step in that journey. My usual 3d style. I messed the lighting up a little and neglected to make it as dramatic as in the following picture, but I can make it look the same. That being said, does this type of lighting/shading look better than if there were shadows as in the next one? My new attempt. As you can see I used the 3d model as a base and worked on inking, coloring and shading from there. I'm still learning on the mouth part and I neglect the other eye for reasons Thanks again for the input!

  13. Hello! So I have been experimenting with 3D game engines for a while and have been wanting to move into learning to make / messing around with and never finishing 2D games because I overall prefer the simplicity of some 2D games and their art style and just find it more fun to play with, so, my question is pretty simple: Do you know of any good 2D game engines? By this I mean top down, sidescrolling, or pseudo 3D any or all. I have looked at programs like construct, and they don't really seem to be right for me, I prefer to be able to write the code myself, as apposed to having it pretty much all built for you because I think it allows for a more diverse enviroment. Possibly important info: I know a fair bit of programming, enough to get by and learn in most engines I know the overall development that goes into a game as I have made a few before myself. Anyway, Thanks for coming here at all, I would really love to hear your replies. Thanks!
  14. I have spent like.. 2 hours scouring the Internet looking for cheap or free alternatives to Adobe Flash Pro (which i hear is the best and stuff) But the pricing is just way too steep for my minimal budget Seriously.. Adobe Flash Pro is apparently like.. $42 a month.. WUT?! I've already got Inkscape, and GIMP and they're awesome (especially Inkscape for making still vector art) but they don't have the option to animate.. not without having to spend hours and hours shifting every little vertex to pose it, export it then repeating until it's done.. What I'm looking for is Free (Or like.. $30 maximum) 2D animation software with vector and bone/armature features so i can animate with ease, i really wanna try and animate some ponies and if that works out i might try animating some other 2D stuff as well, like anime.. Searching though the Internet for this i found a lot of dead ends or programs that just didn't cut it for me.. I've Tried Synfig Studio, It was way to buggy and unusable for me.. despite seemingly being the most promising.. And I've Tried Pencil2D which was meant to have vector features but i was mislead.. I really want to get Anime studio 10 as i saw one video on the interface, rigging and stuff and it seems perfect, but it was $50.. I'd be fine if it was $30ish but not $50.. I searched high and low for an older version that may be cheaper or free but couldn't find any But yeah.. Can somepony please help me out here? I'm a little lost and i really wanna animate some ponies and stuff but without a good program to do so.. I'm stuck.. Thanks in advance ~AURA EDIT: Please.. this is driving me crazy.. Not a single good program i can find..
  15. Hello! So recently I have been wanting to get into doing 2D animations, I have done 3D things for a while now (a couple years) in blender, so I have a decent bit of experience with modeling and animation, the work flow and such. But on to my real question: If I was to get into doing 2D animations what programs are good for this? I would want it to be very capable, as easy to use as possible (but not dumbed down) good for art assets (drawing characters) and worth using. It would also be nice if it had good documentation to learn from. A prime example of what I would be using it for is making MLP animations. The program does not have to be free, although free is always best, I can't go and spend hundreds of dollars on a random program, so I guess my top price would be about $50. Any help is good help, Thanks!
  16. One of my last assignments at uni was to make a short reel of some of the work I did on the course. It has both my oldest, and (almost) newest work. It was supposed to be 90 seconds long, but I found one of my first lip-sync tests from my second year and stuck it in after the credits. Boring sort-of technical stuff you can skip: - Character animation, cleanups, colour, and shading are done using traditional cel animation in Flash. - Effects, composting, and motion graphics/cut-out style animation are done in After Effects Anyway, I had fun. Clicky on the Vimeo link for HD. Oh God, there's actually so much nostalgia for me in this... It's also on my Youtube.

  18. Prepare for a long confusing read. Well, today, me and my friends were discussing the human understanding of the wonders that we call the dimensions and the brain. Many topics came up, such as time travel and teleportation, thought and other things. Some things were confusing, some were simple, but the main point is I need to discuss this or my thoughts will start to confuse me so much that my eyes will derp. We all know the five dimensions, don't we? The First Dimension The Second Dimension The Third Dimension Time Space So. We got all into the subjects one at a time. We all know the first dimension is one of three; length, width, or height, although in math it is technically length. First off, what would this dimension look like? Some said it was just a line. I thought the same. But it doesn't seem logical to have a world that is simply a line, does it? We also live within this dimension, as well as the others, but would it be possible to screw with this dimension or step out of the 3D dimension? It wouldn't seem logical if we did, but technology can go so far. What if we went to this dimension on its own? What would happen? Would we still be living in the other dimensions, or would we be a frozen frame in the middle of nothing? 2D is simple to understand. Flat figures. Cartoons and such are drawn in the second dimension. We live partially in it. The third dimension. This is the dimension we can see, hear, touch, taste, smell...this is the one we majorly live in. This is what we call reality. However, as with the first dimension, technology may go so far as to be able to bend it to fit human necessity. Technically, transferring from one dimension to another would kill you instantly. The only logical way to do so is to use a method similar to that of teleportation or time travel. You'd have to convert your atoms into energy, then reconstruct that energy into atoms in the previous or next dimension. Even then, could you move? Would it be the same as this world? Time...I can't even find a reasonable explanation for this one. What is time? Sure, you'll by default say something about time measurement, but what is time actually? How does it work? What would happen if you were able to travel to or bend this dimension...? I honestly am confused beyond confusion on this one, someone enlighten me. Space? Infinite. Black holes. Not much else we know about this dimension. I need some sort of knowledge to even try to say anything on this. And, we also discussed the mind. You scientists out there may have said something like that thoughts are chemical reactions. 'TIS A LIE. THY BRAIN IS NATURALLY CONSCIOUS AND REQUIRES NOT CHEMICAL COMPONENTS TO PREFORM THE FUNCTION OF A THOUGHT. It can't be explained that easily. It just can't. Also, there was the rumor that by 2020 they will have a computer that is as fast as the brain. Maybe as fast as electric impulses can travel via nerves, but not as fast as the mind. The mind is literally instantaneous. It doesn't go by time, it just happens. You have a thought, and you can't time how fast you have a thought, either, it just comes and goes as quickly as it came. How would any instantaneous technology be possible? And...what are thoughts? What causes them? How do they happen? ANSWERS. I NEED THEM. TL;DR-GO BACK AND READ OR I SHALL FIND YOU AND PLACE YOU IN THE GUILLOTINE.
