  1. Tell everyone about your computer (or computers, if you use more than one)! What model is it and what OS does it run? Myself, I work from two laptops: an HP Pavilion dv6-3170ca for school, and an HP EliteBook 8740w for home (mostly) - both run Windows 7 x64. Here's the smaller one: Specs: Intel i5 2.2 GHz Dual Core w/ Hyper-Threading (up to 2.8 GHz w/ TurboBoost) integrated graphics 4 GB DDR3 RAM 500 GB 7200 RPM hard drive 15" glossy screen (1366x768x24) fingerprint reader Blu-ray drive (read-only) And the larger: Specs: Intel i7 1.7 GHz Quad Core w/ Hyper-Threading (up to 3.06 GHz w/ TurboBoost) NVIDIA Quadro 5000M GPU w/ 2 GB GDDR5 VRAM 8 GB DDR3 RAM (high speed - 1333 MHz!) 500 GB 7200 RPM hard drive 17" 1.07 billion-colour matte screen (1920x1200x30) fingerprint reader backlit, spillproof keyboard Both are beautiful computers and serve me really well. I use the dv6 for school because it wasn't a very expensive computer and has great battery life, and the EliteBook is my awesome gaming/do-it-all machine.
  2. So everyone probably knows everyone that you guys use mac or windows or even ubuntu (linux). So what is your favorite operating system that you are using ? for me im trying out linux and really liking it much better then windows constant updates.
  3. So, I built a virtual clubhouse using 3D graphics software.
  4. Techno Universal

What CPU dose your brain have?

What CPU do you believe that you have in your brain? Please post any CPU name that you think sutes your thinking and even feel free to post the exact technical specifications of it if you really want to! Personaly I believe I have a CLT9 universal core CPU that's manufactured by Celestial labs.
  5. I'm kinda bored, so here's a thread for computer programming, and all that it entails. Maybe to be used for (people) networking if people/ponies are into that. So I guess to start off, maybe discuss about yourself as a programmer: My level (for lack of a better word): currently a hobbyist, although I am seeking out employment opportunities for software development My languages: Python (3.5+) and C (still learning all the ins and outs) and I dabble with Go and Java Current Projects: a 2D pygame platformer that I plan to put on my RetroPie; various system tools for win32 (so it can suck less); messing around with Django, machine learning and nltk
  6. I have created this thread for those who are seeking advice on anything Technical in their life. Need help fixing a computer issue? Need advice on a new PC build? Can't choose between a battery only electronic car or a hybrid car? Need help fixing that ipod? Ask it all here! If I can't help you, then someone here sure will! My background and expertise I offer... Bachelors of Science MBA (Masters of Businesses Administration) with the concentration of Information Systems. (Bah Long name.) COMPTIA A+ Certified COMPTIA Network + Certified COMPTIA Security + Certified Anyone can join in and help out as well, So what Technical issues are you having today?
  7. Hi, I have decided that sometime around January of 2017, I will "move" to Linux and continue my phase of slowly abandoning Microsofts product line and ecosystem (mostly because of privacy concerns regarding Windows 10, but also because now that I have tried Win 10 for almost an entire year, I can safely say that I do have problems with the stability and design of the OS). This is not the first time that I have decided to go to Linux. Last year after an "upgrade" to Windows 10 from 8.1 that did not go too smoothly on my old HP convertible laptop, I decided to create another partition on my hard drive using Ubuntu's installer app, and I believe I may have talked about it in various parts of these forums once upon a time. However, back then I was only considering Linux as a temporary replacement until I could afford a better machine, having known about the free nature of Linux distros. Since I still (unfortunately) need Microsoft's flagship product as I plan on going to TAFE next year to do courses relevant to Screen and Media, which will require the Adobe Creative Cloud, and after much research, I decided that maybe WINE/PlayOnLinux/Crossover and/or virtual machines is not a very good idea and that buying a Surface for this rather small amount of software I actually need Windows for would be financially shooting myself in the foot and will only support Microsoft further than if I just do what I did with my old laptop, and make a partition for Linux so that I can still keep Windows for what I need it for. I guess the reason that I made this post is because I am a long time Windows user wanting something different, and I only dislike Apple more than Microsoft (though honestly, they're just as bad as each other), and I wanted to hear from any Linux users on the forums any tips, advice and suggestions to help me make the most out of my "switch" to Linux. Especially since me (and my family) have been dependent on Microsoft and their product line and ecosystem for as long as I can remember. If it helps, this is my current specs: I have chosen Linux Mint as my distro to make the "switch" from Windows to because I tried it inside a virtual machine and was impressed by the Cinnamon desktop environment being so much like what I'm used to on Windows, but also more organised, I have heard lots of good things about its stability and speed (I even tried it on my old HP laptop that ran Ubuntu and Windows 10 before I had to give it to my dad, with Windows 8.1 reinstalled onto it because he needed Windows) and because Mint's source code is based on one of the major distros of Linux (Ubuntu), I thought that it would be just as good, and it turned out much better as my old machine never crashed once with it installed, compared to with Ubuntu installed.
  8. By GOLLY! It's another entry about computers, huh? Wow, I never realized my life consisted of so many bad computer stories. Hmf. Anyway, this is probably the most serious issue I've ever had before, so stay tuned, will ya? About a month ago, just after my copy of Watch_Dogs had become corrupted and after I tried to grease to disk, I realized that it was a lost cause. Yes, the car wax did work, but not entirely. All in all, it let me play about 30 minutes before the entire system shut down, and about 49% of installation on Xbox Hard Drive. Nonetheless, I managed to torrent a copy of Disk 2 (I've got all rights, don't I? I mean, I bought the game) and it required me to put it on a USB drive, or rather, stick. Now, I'm not the kind of person who has twenty USB drives floating about my room; I like to keep everything on one 200GB External Hard Drive. So what do you do when you've run into a problem? You ask the next person above you, in my case, that'd be my father. Simple as that, I ran downstairs and asked for a USB about or greater than 8GBs of space. He said he'd look. About four days later, he comes back with an old USB drive that had approx. 30GBs on it; I was grateful and didn't dare hesitate. I wanted to play W_Ds as soon as possible. I don't remember if I've ever said this before, but I have four computers. Three of them are Laptops, which one of my laptops died (rest in peace), and one of them is a large Dell Dimension from the year 2002. My main laptop has now become what I call, "Le' Brick" or "The Craptop" because it's date goes back to around the same time as my Dell. My third laptop is a Chromebook, but as I said before, I hate that thing. So I plug my USB into the Craptop and find it's got about twenty gigs of movies, which wasn't a problem. Nothing was, until I tried to unplug it. Y'see, for all the new kids on the block (I know there are a few), Windows XP required you to "Safely Remove Hardware" before unplugging it. You can still do it today, (Especially with Macs), but it's not necessary and hardly ever called for. My issue was that my Craptop could no longer remove hardware. Of course, I grew angry and just ripped it out anyway. Shame though, I lost one of my Blog Covers. . . This is when things started to escalate. That night, I plugged in my External, the grande' 200GB "Declassified" Government Property Mofo (with Sticker!), and I noticed the icon for the device was a standard folder icon rather than it's "storage bus" logo. Strange, huh? Well, I then came up with another stupid idea. In the middle of the night, I took my external downstairs and plugged it into the FAMILY COMPUTER to see what was going on. If you hadn't caught on to what happened, Autorun.Inf is a trojan that acts as a contagious virus like the flu. It's origins always come from USBs and, in fact, this is the very reason people tell you not to plug in USBs found on the streets. If you happen to plug in the device, it'll run the Autorun file and that will execute a second program that launches a seed into your Registry. From there, every time autorun is activated on "clean" drives, it'll leech onto that and so forth until the entire world is infected. Their effects are always varied. They can go from disabling hardware to permanently removing all internet access for that one computer. I stayed up to about 3AM figuring out how to get rid of the bug, and eventually, I discovered something that really helped. First off, Anti-Spyware Remover, the most malicious looking antivirus, is actually useful. It managed to pull off and detect (mostly detect) the trojan a mile away. Secondly, that Chromebook I give so much crap? Actually helped in this case. Turns out, because Chromebooks don't run ".exe" files, they are immune to the "disease", not to mention their default (and only) view setting is showing invisible files. Allowing you to access otherwise restricted drive folders for alteration. In the end, I took a kitchen knife and had a bit of fun chopping the drive to pieces. The movies were destroyed and all the computers and externals were disinfected thanks to the Chromebook. Norton 360, an antivirus on my family computer, was able to block all the drives' efforts to sabotage. I was never able to play Watch_Dogs. Lesson of today is a real one. No jokes here. Don't look down at the underdog. Someday, he'll be the one pulling you out of a pickle. Tomorrow I'll post a picture of my MLP Collection after a year of Bronyism. It's a special blog post. -RealityPublishing
  9. first off all, this is not a debate about the quality of these movies, from a storyline perspective. This is just about the art style and nothing more. I must say, that i miss hand drawn animation movies in modern cinema. While i don't particulary hate it, i must say that after 20 years, since Toy Story came around, i long for something different again, because these days, CG Animation is everywhere and it gets put out in Cinemas like Hamburgers at Mcdonalds. It's also something that Don Bluth mentioned in his interview with the Nostalgia Critic (Link to it below) The Animators want to make these characters look more humanlike and more realistic. In that case, why not get an actor? Seriously, the fantasy is being completly killed. CG Characters look like Puppets to me, while hand drawn characters are so full of life, which you can see from their faces. I think hand drawn movies like Pinocchio are impossible to make with CG. What do you think of it? Is there some truth to it, or is it just me? (Here is the link. The part i mentioned starts immediatly and goes for 3 minutes) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGpupHNRgag
  10. Now, I know I'm on hiatus, but I really wanted to get this one off my chest. Consider this entry as a bonus episode, mkay? I like to stay up to date on all things computers. Whether it be the announcement of the Nintendo NX, or the release of Intel's new 10-Core Processor line. It doesn't matter to me; knowing it's out there is good enough to satisfy my craving for faster Specs. Recently, I received the honor of watching the Apple Conference, who, presented their new iPhone 7. Do I have anything against the iPhone? Yes, actually I do. I despise Apple products and their company. Why? It's quite simple. People, this generation of brats, keep trying to find "slim" products to satisfy their fetish for more space in their pockets. In a way, computers today have become a market of companies who compete to create the slimmest laptop. Why do I have a problem with this? Because it destroys the market! We're turning otherwise great computers into potatoes! Wanna get a Chromebook? Sure thing! Hold on while I remove the fan so it can fit in your pants. Wanna buy a top-of-the-line gaming laptop with 4K compatibility? Sure thing! Lemme just remove the Disk Drive so you can't take advantage of any of it! See what I'm going at? Thin computers are okay, but do we really have to sacrifice performance and capability to make it so? What's the point of a 4K gaming laptop if you can't watch 4K movies, or use install disks? I know people rarely buy physical copies, but I'm the kind of person who likes to have a large collection of DVDs or Game Cases. Sure, I'll buy a couple of games on Steam, but what's the point if you can't have that hard plastic to prove you bought it? Why do I give Apple so much crap? Because the computer market today is evolving and Apple is just holding us back. As I mentioned above, Intel released a new processor that completely destroys the rest. 10 Terabyte hard drives are being developed and Nvidia released one of the most powerful GPUs to date, the "Titan X". With these in mind, Apple is no longer the top of the food-chain. They keep trying to reinvent the same old idea like it's some kind of Call of Duty formula. The world's trying to become more powerful in technology, and Apple isn't helping. Their OS, El Capitan, is crap compared to Win10, and even the critics say so (go on, check the stars rating). Their hardware is about as powerful as my Nintendo 64. Apple 4K? Psh, crap. For a price that trumps the rest, you don't get much. Why we still have Apple is a mystery to me. I'd choose Linux XFCE4 over Apple any day. -RealityPublishing (Yes, I'm working on Season Finale Part 2)
  11. Little childhood revisit: Windows 98 was the sound of my childhood But what is your favorite Windows startup?
  12. So recently I've been disassembling some old (early 00's) computers at work so they can get rid of them. I was thinking how they didn't seem really all that old to me. I was just wondering what technology some of you guys have used in your lives that already was, or was becoming old BACK around the early 2000's? I put some stuff I could think of in the survey. If you haven't done or used some of the stuff, list it in your post. Listing your age would make it more interesting. I'm 27 and have done/used all of the things in the survey either in school or at home. I don't miss most of it. Setting up and playing a vinyl record can be fun though once in a while. All of this kind of reminds me of Pinkie's 90s-ish VHS quality rap in "Testing 1,2,3"
  13. Greeting everybody! Now recently, I've been thinking about upgrading my computer, but I'm unsure what to upgrade to. As such I've decided to ask you in the form of a hypothetical scenario: If you had a budget of £300/$446.76/€411.12 to spend on upgrading your gaming computer, specifically the CPU or GPU, which would you upgrade first and to what? (Thank you in advance)
  14. Anyone using 3D coat or the Steam Version of it? I can figure alot of people will want to say just use Blender "because it's free". But the voxel sculpting sounds so tempting and the auto re-topology sounds fantastic. Speaking of free, the price is what I mostly want to ask. Should I wait for a discount on Steam? I accumulated +$300 worth of spare change, but would it be more worth it if I wait a bit? Steam gave me that mentality I know but... still. Should I wait? Also sorry if there was a thread like this already.
  15. OK, so I was playing Virtua Fighter on the computer today using an Emulator, and when I was playing against Lion, annoying as he is, he seemed to be waiting for me to blunder, so here is the question, how does Fighting Game AI work? Do Fighting Games as early as 1994 have Neural Network systems? Do they have Blunder Detection systems? Apparently in Fighting Game AI a Blunder is called an Outlier, but modern Chess Machines have a Blunder Detection system that can detect wherever a player has blundered, and when a player blunders, they look for a fork or something in the opening and use it as an advantage. So how does Fighting Game AI work? Are there different types? What is the most common type?
  16. I just saw the movie the Imitation Game in theaters yesterday and it was probably the best movie I have seen in a while. It is about Alan Turing who invented the first computer and helped create computer science. He was a code breaker for the MI6 (British Intelligence Service) during World War II. He was extremely socially awkward but highly intelligent, a classic case of a savant.
  17. I found out about Windows XP mode but I'm not sure about it. Does it work for old games that work on Windows XP like Fallout 3? I can launch it on Windows 7 for me but it still crashes on occasion.
  18. I wanted to make a thread, couldn't think of anything else, as I'm a tech nut and there doesn't seem to be a thread for this. Plus I wanted to try and contribute to the community. Note to admins: If this isn't the area to post this please move it to where it needs to go. I couldn't find a better suiting place myself. But I am new, so please forgive me if I missed something obvious. So, guidelines: Desktop CPU: GPU: CASE: RAM: Motherboard: HDD: Anything else desired(pics, extra specs, etc): Laptop: Name and model: Anything else desired(pics, extra specs, etc): Mine: CPU: i5 4690K OC @4GHz GPU: 780Ti CASE: Mac Pro G5 Case, gutted and custom modded to fit my MOBO. RAM: 8GB 1600MHz Motherboard: MSI Gaming 5 Micro ATX HDD: 2TB (Hackintosh OS Drive) 2TB (Windows 10 OS Drive) 750GB (Ubuntu OS Drive), 5TB (Slave/Data Drive) Pics will come in a few. I have to eat dinner and make a phone call.
  19. So, I decided to make what feels like my thousandth thread regarding something to do with computers, which makes me realize how much I really don't know when it comes to computers, even if I know a bit more than the average joe. Anyways, today's topic is on CCleaner! For those of you who aren't aware, CCleaner is to my understanding, a program that goes through your registry and deletes errors and useless junk left in your registry and stuff like that. But as someone who isn't super techsavy or anything, I don't really know the in depth stuff when it comes to CCleaner, and i've heard from others that it can actually mess up your computer. And since again, I don't really know the ins and outs of the program or anything, i really can't say I know either way. So i decided to ask some more knowledgeable people on here about what they think about CCleaner, and if it's a program you use, or would use, or you believe is not a good program to use, and will cause more issues than anything. Feel free to explain yourself, but keep in mind I am not highly knowledgeable when it comes to this, so there is only a certain amount I may understand. Your free to just really discuss Ccleaner in general if you wish. So let the discussion begin!
  20. And please, no pointing out how a creature with hooves won't be able to use a keyboard -.- My question is basically: If the Internet came to Ponyvile (along with computers, of course), what would each of the Mane Six primarily use it for?
  21. Ok so.....I was talking to someone last night about my laptop not working and they were saying to go to Best Buy, Staples, Office Deput....etc....and we said that we normally get our computers at Walmart because they're cheaper, and they proceeded to inform us that Walmart gets lower end computers (not as good of quality). We've gotten my previous computer there before which lasted for seven years (and we may be able to fix it/get it fixed), my mom also got her computer there a few months ago and has not had any problem with it so, I was wondering if this is true or not. I know a lot it depends on the brand and not the store, but I also know that different stores get different stock, it makes sense that Walmart would or might get lower quality laptops as that's not what they specialize in, but I don't really know for sure, as I said before, we've gotten computers there before and have had no problem with them, then again, we got my laptop there seven years ago so, that might've not been the case back then..... Idk for sure if I'm going to need to get a new computer or not, hopefully not but I just wanted to ask here and get some opinions that way I can be prepared for where to purchase. (someone else said they do too). We've never had a problem with their computers before so, I don't think buying one from somewhere else would be necessary, that's just what we were told..... Also, this person does work with computers so, he may know for sure, or that might just be his opinion. don't know for sure. And just for the record, someone is going to be looking at my laptop next week sometime, but I just figured it would be good to post on here since I know a lot of you guys prob know a good amount about electronics. Thanks!!
  22. In case you don't know, I have a Chromebook. Which sucks major flank. :| So naturally, I would want to get a new computer. I've asked on another forum which brand of computer I should get, but most people said I should build my own. Is it true that it runs better and it's cheaper? I'd like some more personal opinions before I consider it.
  23. This is just a question I had regarding virus protection software that I've been meaning to ask about. So, I have AVG currently, (Free version) and I use that as my virus protection. I don't use anything else thus far on this computer. But I was curious regarding Malwarebytes, it only scans for Malware doesn't it? I've never used it, so i'm not entirely sure, but I was thinking about downloading it to use just to be doubly protected from stuff. (Especially since my laptop I use to had basically died atleast partially due to a virus I believe.) Of course, I am not sure if it would be safe to use it alongside AVG, because last time I had two virus protection softwares present on my computer, it lead to a bunch of trouble(Last time on my old laptop I had Mcaffe, which came with that computer, and it wouldn't go away, and was just causing a mess, it wasn't working, and I think it was probably due to a virus, but I was unable to do any virus scans, so basically, I don't like Mcaffe anymore.) But if Malwarebytes does a different type of scan, would it be beneficial to have it alongside another virus program? I'm just curious, seeing as my laptop I use to have I believe got a virus, and I'd rather not have a repeat, so I've been very cautious and paranoid about viruses on this computer. So basically, would running Malwarebytes alongside AVG be a good idea? Or would it just not do anything, or lead to more issues? Thanks to anyone who can offer the knowledge, I know my basics and a few extra things when it comes to computers, but I don't really know a ton on the inner workings of things, and I don't want to mess up this computer.
  24. I decided to make this thread to have everyone share some cool games that you can play with an absolute toaster. Because sometimes people don't have the money to be able to buy a super computer from thin air, so at the moment they have to stick with integrated graphics/processing. Here's a few games I could play: -Brutal DOOM -Half-Life -Team Fortress 2 (Only will work on a few fixes and modification and it would run at 30-60 FPS.) Also my PC specs are: 1.48 GHz Dual Core APU 6.00 GB RAM x64 based So, what games can you play on your coffee maker?
  25. CMQuickfireTK

    Technology Any Linux users?

Just curious. because I am a major Linux fanatic when I'm not watching ponies.
