  1. A one-off exploration made for shits and giggles. Visit the rich and enchanting alternate reality where friendship isn't magic. The canon got ripped out, shredded, pooped upon, and your waifu is probably shit. Wayward Star Twilight Sparkle was feeling like a jumpy bag of bricks. It was a mix of drowsy relaxation one felt after a strenuous task and residual anxiety that made her bowels churn in an unpleasant dance of urgency and constipation. Finally, the cramp diminished and she gave away a loud sigh of relief. This became a sort of ritual for her. Each major test inside the Canterlot Castle went the same way: she got up, she panicked, she somehow made it to the classroom, then followed a calmer period while she was writing a test, a slightly less calmer period in which she was frantically trying to double check everything at least three times, and when the time was up she finally retreated into one of the castle’s luxurious public restrooms. These were mostly deserted in the mornings when tourists were yet to be unleashed upon the stained glass hallways, and castle personnel had their private ones anyway. It was just her and the muffled commotion deep down on the bustling streets and markets outside the castle walls. Upon finishing her bathroom deed she uttered a lengthy groan, remembering the supervisor’s words about how they were getting the results in the early afternoon. It meant she had to wait here in the castle, far, far away from her cozy, warm bed, surrounded by chatty unicorn peers who had most likely aggregated inside the library, all loud and upbeat about those allegedly easy questions. A thought made her puff a sour chuckle out of her nostrils: she might just as well remain stuck on the toiled, trickling the last remnants of her anxiety down the drain while perusing the Daily Hay for some worthwhile news that would keep her mind off the whole test thing. Her horn lit in a pale pink aura of a telekinetic spell that drew today’s newspaper and a griffin pocked watch from her saddlebags. She had snatched the former before her father and big brother had gotten the chance to open the mailbox. The second item was somewhat of a family heirloom she had received as a birthday gift from her father. He had allegedly bought this watch in the griffin lands far to the northeast beyond the rocky shield of Griffonstone. She opened the device with a gentle click and released another sound of frustration: “Two hours!” That Daily Hay better got some very engaging news to tell! The first page looked like a disaster: Poll Results are in for the Best Song of the Year! Below this bombastic title was a picture of some fair earth pony mare with teary eyes and a moved expression of your standard showbiz diva. Twilight skimmed through the whole article which turned out to be the usual: talented filly, corrupt manager, couldn’t make it without her friends, yada, yada, yada. A wide yawn betrayed her lack of sleep. Constantly checking and rechecking facts in early morning hours on the day of a test was the usual routine for many a magic student. Not that she ever fell asleep before midnight anyway. She flipped the page and skipped a bunch of pony comics until her eyes stopped on an article about a jousting tournament in Winsome Hills. This one made her think. Her big brother had obligatory lance practice in the city watch and had won a few tournaments here and there. Perhaps they could go if he had managed to get the next week off like he had been bragging. There was a curio shop filled with miscellaneous magical items located somewhere around those parts that has piqued her interest, and Winsome Falls were said to be at their most beautiful in the summer. She looked at the watch and flipped another page. Only one more hour and three quarters to go! The article on the third page declared this summer’s mane style to be a low ponytail with flower accessories. Twilight skeptically glanced up at her dark blue bangs. She was wearing the same mane style since, well, forever. It really went well with her straight hair and rose-violet streaks that adorned her mane and tail. It was simple, cute, comfortable, and never out of fashion. Why change it? She gave the watch another quick glance before she concluded it was time to stretch her legs. Besides the library, there were other places accessible to public that were seldom visited by chatty students. There was that tiny moss-covered courtyard with a barred well, the southern ramparts, the stables for students and visitors, a few vacant classrooms, and the observatory in the south-east tower. The latter was her favorite. Dark, private, filled with celestial charts and apparatuses, it was a window to strange and wondrous places far beyond her reach. She has been spending quite some time there, gazing towards the stars and moon. And when she hasn’t been doing that, she has been reading about magic, history, and pony science. As far as she was able to remember, Twilight has always been drawn to the arcane arts, and she had a cutie mark to prove it. Most magic-prone unicorns had one with some sort of a celestial motif. Hers was a pink six pointed star overlaying a lesser white one. Nothing too fancy; however, this colorful representation of those mysterious lights twinkling high above the sky made her feel proud all the same. She opened the big wooden doors and entered the perpetual dusk of the observatory. Catching her breath from the long climb up the spiraling stairway, she dismounted her saddlebags onto the floor and checked for time: “An hour and a half.” “An hour and a half?” a calm, gentle voice inquired from behind her tail. Twilight jumped and turned, unsure if she should have been more concerned by the fact that she wasn’t alone or by the fact that she was suddenly dragged into an awkward conversation. These little fears of hers lingered there only for a moment, until her mind finally managed to process the picture it received from her wide open eyes. There, in the shadows between a bookshelf and a low tea table, lying on a bunch of soft pillows was nopony other than Queen Celestia, her long, elegant horn bathing the surroundings in a warm glow of magic sunlight. Twilight’s racing heart jumped into her throat while a thousand panicked thoughts began to swarm inside her mind. She suddenly became acutely aware of her loud panting, her increasingly sweaty coat, she remembered how she had forgotten to wash her hooves before leaving the restroom, and how she had casually dropped her saddlebags onto the observatory floor like she owned the place. She wanted to just turn tail and run if that wasn’t even more inappropriate. One must never turn their back on royalty, let alone on the supreme leader of Equestria! “Um, yes? Oh, Your Highness,” Twilight performed an awkward curtsey that was supposed to ameliorate the first part of her blunt reply. Queen Celestia didn’t seem to mind her manners on the outside. She was still smiling when she reiterated her question: “You rushed in and said an hour and a half. I was just wondering what it meant.” “Oh, that,” she wheezed out some forced laughter: “I’m just waiting for the test results. We had a test. Today. Half an hour ago.” “Is that so?” Celestia shuffled some papers she had laying around: “And you are?” The realization put her in a state of mild shock: a lady was supposed to introduce herself along with the curtsey! She bowed: “I’m sorry!” Celestia slightly tilted her head with a concerned expression: “Beg your pardon?” “I’m Twilight Sparkle. Last grade of prep at Surewall University.” “Ah, you’re one of them,” Celestia’s face brightened: “I was beginning to worry that I’m not capable of recognizing my own students.” “Yeah, he-he, one of them,” Twilight forced herself to smile along with the Queen. Surewall University was a small public establishment for those that didn’t have what it took to be accepted into Celestia’s School for Gifted Unicorns. As such, it depended on a rigid stream of taxpayers’ gold, so it had to borrow many of castle’s classrooms which were specifically designed to teach certain subjects like alchemy and astronomy. Other classes like magic theory and history were held inside a spacious watchtower close to the city gates, while their practical courses took place at the old royal stables near the Canterlot River. Suffice to say, their daily schedule always took them on a wild ride all over Canterlot. “Last grade, you say. How are things with the good old Tower?” “Err, they’re both doing well,” she gave the Queen an unsure shrug. The Tower was both the colloquial name for the school and its eccentric headmaster, a grizzled old unicorn who went by the name of Sir Iron Locket. They both were old, grey, tall, and unyielding. “Glad to hear it. So now that you’re finished with your preparations for the university, do you have any plans for the future?” “Huh, well, I was thinking along the lines of astral magic …” That was the highest form of unicorn magic that touched upon many subjects from thaumaturgy, divination, teleportation, to forbidden spells that brought blazing destruction down upon one’s enemies. It was a dauntingly vast, diverse, and troublesomely interconnected area of expertise that many talented unicorns had studied their entire lives, but only a few have ever managed to master. “Astral magic,” Celestia winked: “Then perhaps we’ll see each other more often.” Twilight doubted that. Queen Celestia was not only the leader of Equestria but also the headmistress at her private school for gifted unicorns and the most powerful mage ever. On the other hoof, Twilight had flunked its entrance exam and had to enroll into the school of her second choice instead. Though that had happened a long time ago when she had only been a filly, the memory still kneaded her guts into a fluttering ball with each recollection. “You seem troubled. Is everything alright?” The question pulled Twilight out of her memories with a quick jolt of shivers: “Yes! Of course! I’m fine! Thank you for worrying about your humble subject!” She reinforced her hasty statements with a bow and another sour grin. “You know, you shouldn’t be so worried about the test.” “I shouldn’t?” she was taken aback by the Queen’s statement: “But it’s the final test about thaumetic principles, a subject that is very important in astral magic!” “I know,” Celestia’s polite smile widened: “But you still shouldn’t worry yourself so much.” Her bright magic engulfed a piece of paper she has been holding between her hooves and sent it across the room where it stopped just a few hooves before Twilight’s muzzle: “See, you need to trust yourself more.” “I … I … Why …” she gathered herself and looked from behind the paper at the white mare who was clearly enjoying her confusion: “Excuse me, but why is the Queen in possession of my test?” “Let’s just say your headmaster still knows how to play Castles. Now, have you checked your test?” Twilight’s lips stretched into a timid smile: “I scored above average.” “Quite a good mark, even when compared to my students,” Celestia nodded: You still lack a firm grasp on the subject of thaumetic threshold and magical field characteristics, but I suppose that is something you’ll learn on your astral courses.” “Does that mean I’m …” her voice got stuck in her throat. Celestia took a longer look at a tattered ledger that has been hiding among the pillows: “Well, judging by your grades and the fact that Sir Locket has the same admission system as my own school, I do think that you pass the threshold.” She then retrieved Twilight’s paper and scribbled her grade inside the ledger. The relief gave Twilight a bit of courage, so she stepped closer. The Queen noticed and lifted her head: “Once I’m done with the grades, could you be a dear and take this back to your headmaster’s office?” “Of course!” she nodded. It felt strange standing in a room with the most powerful entity in Equestria, and it felt even stranger having such an ordinary conversation with her. She has always imagined Queen Celestia to be more regal and imposing, but the real Queen Celestia resting before her on a heap of cushions turned out to be a totally different pony. She seemed warm, kind, she didn’t use fare speak like some old wizard, and even though she ruled Equestria for centuries, she really gave one the impression that she cared. Still, a queen was a queen and Twilight had no intention of poking into somepony so official. So she just stood there, observing Celestia who was scribbling numbers into the ledger one page after another. Suddenly, the Queen began to murmur: “Twilight Sparkle … Twilight … Sparkle. Are you perchance the young daughter of Night Light and Twilight Velvet?” “Yes I am,” Twilight answered, concerned by the Queen’s sudden interest in her family. “And your brother is Shining Armor from the city watch?” “Yes,” she hunched her posture. Was this about her failed entrance exam? Did Celestia personally remember her failure?! “Your mother is quite an accomplished writer. I really enjoy her books, especially the Siren’s Game. Lullaby is a foe I’d never want to face.” An exhilarating shiver overtook her head and turned her long mane into a glittering ocean of multi-colored waves. Siren’s Game was her mother’s latest book about a powerful abyssal warlord who led an army of deep sea monstrosities to the surface in order to free an eldritch deity. She was calm, ruthless, charismatic, and more than a match for the heroes who sought to stop her. “I’ll make sure to pass on your compliments.” “Then make sure your also pass them to your father and brother. They’re both doing a fine job serving Equestria.” “Of course …” she wanted to add a few more words to her generic confirmation but was interrupted by Celestia’s sigh of relief. “There! All done!” The big white mare rose and stretched herself, then took a stroll towards Twilight’s saddlebags: “These are yours I presume?” she threw a glance at the young mare's flank and back to the pink stars sewn onto the bags, put in all the documents, and turned back towards Twilight who was cautiously sneaking after her playful tail which fluttered around like it had a mind of its own: “I hope this does not inconvenience you too much. It’s just that this wasn’t inside my schedule and I’m running late to an important meeting.” “Not at all My Queen. It will be my honor,” she made a successful curtsey and even managed a pristine smile. Twilight usually mocked the fictional characters that blindly followed their leaders, but doing favors for Celestia somehow actually felt rewarding. Like she was doing something important to help Equestria, and that feeling left a warm, gratifying sensation inside her belly that melted the shivering remnants of her anxiety. For the first time today, Twilight was happy. The Solar Forum was populated by a lively herd of patrolling guards, shouting merchants, and upper class unicorns trotting around in neatly caparisoned groups. The golden Sun Obelisk on the forum’s podium was shining brightly in the late morning rays. Twilight was just returning from the Surewall University where she had somehow managed to deposit both the tests and the ledger back into the headmaster’s office without being noticed. Since it was the last day of school, both the students and their teachers had apparently taken some liberties and never checked in. Granted, most Surewall students haven’t taken upon themselves to study astral magic and thus didn’t have thaumetic principles for one of their courses. They were a pretty normal bunch of unicorns who have gathered here from all over Equestria to get a proper magical education required of healers, crafters, alchemists, guards, and other horn-related professions. It was quite a welcome change from competitive and ambitious castle busybodies. Her mental pasture was violently interrupted by a white mare that bumped into her side right as she was turning corner onto Mane Street. Being a little sister of an overprotective city watchpony and a fairly jumpy unicorn, Twilight had no problem deflecting the poor mare backwards with an instinctive barrier. “Oh!” Twilight yelped and made an indecisive step towards her toppled victim: “Are you alright?” The mare seemed unfazed by the event. She brushed the dust off her breezy yellow gown, placed the overdecorated hat back onto her wavy purple mane, threw Twilight a timid smile, and quickly scurried away into the forum crowd, dragging along two bags of fabric aglow with her blue unicorn magic. Canterlot was the capital of Equestria with bustling streets, famous attractions, and colorful shops luring many a strange pony through its gates. Judging by the lack of angry nickering and snide remarks, this young mare was probably some traveling artist trying her luck around the country, or maybe she was just your average pony visiting her friends or relatives in a fancy dress. Twilight let the mare slide out of her thoughts as she was slowly maneuvering among ponies, street lamps, and carriages on the broad and busy Mane Street. These long walks have always been the most tedious part of her education. The loud crowd thinned once she had passed a few crossings and trotted onto the hoof-licked paving stones of Runnel Street. A tall stone mansion with a well-kept garden and a dwarf pine hedge stood just a few jumps away from where the street disappeared into a walled off precipice. She gave out a soft, tired sigh: Home at last. Merged with the steep mountainside from which it had been chiseled, the lopsided yet elegant outcrop called Lightstone Mansion reigned supreme over the broad ledge of Primrose Cove that had once served as one of Canterlot’s main harbors. Its high steps and a garden riddled with winding overflow channels told of annual floods that came with each spring. Twilight dragged herself through a wooden gate arch, down a garden path, and up the stone stairs. A star-shaped keychain flew from her right saddlebag with a jingling sound of many keys that had gathered on its ring throughout the years, but before she had time to select the right match for the mansion, its doors opened and Twilight came muzzle to muzzle with an unfamiliar face. “And you are?” she made a befuddled grumble and squinted wearily at the tall pink pegasus mare who has come between her and a nice warm bed: “And why are you dressed like a maid?” The other pony donned an unsure smile and took a few steps backwards, accidentally bumping into a big trash bin stuffed with freshly made vegetable waste. “Twilight!” a familiar voice came from the garden. It was her mother Velvet who emerged from a small wooden shed all enveloped in her white-green gardening attire complete with a gigantic straw hat. Her sky blue magic was totting along two pots of dried sediment from their septic tank, each swaying somewhat dangerously in the fresh mountain breeze. “Mom!” Twilight descended back into the garden: “What is going on?” “Oh, yeah, we should have told you, but you were so busy with your tests.” “Told me what?” “Well,” her mother inhaled a whole story worth of air: “Your father is always out and about with his airships, I’m busy with my books, Shining is practically living in the city stables, and you have your studies to worry about, so we’ve all agreed to hire a housemaid.” “Father agreed?” Night Light had come from a poor family of oddballs and semi-famous adventurers and was thus a little bit more anxious when it came to money. Her mom, a rich and high-born Canterlotian, represented the opposing force in their family’s financial affairs. “Not at first, but in the end he too likes a clean house and a warm meal on the table,” she turned towards the sky: “Just put it down here dear!” The pegasus mare managed an awkward landing between two lush thyme bushes with the trash bin lodged between her long legs: “Lady Velvet, these are all the remains from our lunch and dinner preparations,” she then turned towards Twilight with a polite nod: “Lady Sparkle.” Velvet giggled: “I've already told you that you can call us just by our names, though a lady here and there doesn’t hurt!” She took the bin and continued: “I do believe you two haven’t yet been formally introduced,” she nudged Twilight forward: “This sleep-deprived unicorn here is my daughter Twilight Sparkle. And this overly polite pegasus is Cadence, our new housemaid,” she focused her attention back towards the pink mare: “If I recall correctly, you come from Rainbow Falls up north.” “You are correct,” Cadence nodded. “Lovely place! Been there a couple of times while I was writing my first books. Quite chilly, but the view is absolutely stunning!” Twilight was unimpressed by the whole situation. Her mother’s chatting was slowly merging with the background, giving way to her sleepy thoughts. So mom hired a maid. She glanced at the pony in question, all frills and polite smiles. This one had to be only a couple of years older, same as her big brother. She started wondering if Shining has already inspected this lovely new addition to their household. The maid was a lean, doe-eyed creature of pink coat and cutesy wings flaunting a pair of soft mane and tail buns streaked with bright golden and lilac highlights. She sighed. Her big brother was a complete fool for such namby-pamby princess types. “Twilight … Twilight?” “Huh?” she slowly shifted her narrow gaze towards mom whose loud voice managed to penetrate into the maelstrom of her increasingly hostile thoughts aimed at the pretty pony newcomer. “I was asking you about your test?” Velvet continued unbothered by Twilight’s reaction: “So, are you all prepped and ready for the summer?” “ … I guess so.” “Great! Then I suggest you to go say hello to your father down at the Cove.” “Why? Won’t he be coming up for lunch?” “Of course he will, but we have prepared a special surprise for you.” Twilight’s sleepy squint got adorned by wrinkles of seriousness and suspicion: “A surprise? What kind of surprise are we talking here?” The last time her family had prepared her a special surprise, she had been forced to spend an entire Hearts & Hooves Day with some orange schmuck from the Royal Guard. He was her brother’s acquaintance she had bumped into on a castle corridor once or twice, and according to her family, that had turned him into an eligible escort for the Hearts & Hooves Festival. Suffice to say, Twilight just wasn’t cut out to go on dates with stallions who were spending their days playing in stable bands, singing in taverns, talking about physical sports, and driving around giggling mares in their fancy red carriages. Those things were all just so boring, unnecessary, and quite irresponsible. “It’s not another date, I promise,” Velvet gave her that annoyingly patronizing smile only an overbearing mother could give: “We just want you to have a little fun over the summer is all.” A cobbled path wound atop the old ramparts that stood guard over the vertiginous view, then went down a flight of chiseled stairs, ending on the windy ledge of Primrose Cove all dressed in old loading equipment and rusty containers. A small fleet of two Hoofsize bulk freighters and a Cloudsmax reefer were resting at their respective moorings. Twilight was trotting among the cranes and containers that were scattered across the whole ledge in a seemingly disorganized mess. A few dockhooves and aeronauts were unloading grain from one of the freighters into smaller crates bearing Canterlot’s royal crest. Upon noticing her, each pony raised their head and nodded in silent greeting. She nodded back and pulled to a stop: “Has anypony seen my father?!” An older pegasus aeronaut came closer and put off her aviator cap: “Excuse me ma’am?” “Do you know where I could find Night Light?” “The pegasus swung her right wing in the general direction towards the sky: “He just went for a test ride and will be here shortly ma’am.” “Test ride?” The pegasus shrugged: “He fixed his ol’ ship and went to see if it’s working all right. That thing hasn’t flown for ages,” she put back her goggles and faced the southern horizon: “Must admit. They don’t build ‘em like this here in Canter.” Though blinded by the rising sun, Twilight noticed a glistening spot that was fast approaching the ledge. Once the object has flown into the mountain shade, she slowly recognized its form. It was indeed her dad’s old airship from his adventuring days. However, even though it was old, this aerial vessel wasn’t one of your ordinary blimps but a full-fledged rigid airship: sleek, sturdy, spell-driven, fast, and maneuverable. Even its striped grey-white back and blue belly spoke of adventurer’s practicality overruling the usual equine concern with aesthetics. Her dad had used to take them all on short trips in this ship when she and Shining had been little foals, but he had later decided to ground it in storage due to its age and increasingly hazardous quirks. The airship landed gracefully below their walled-off street at the narrowest end of the cove’s ledge, so Twilight had to canter its entire length to get there. She found Night Light tying the ship’s ropes round the bollards with his yellow magic. His left ear turned in her direction: “Hey Twilight!” he fastened his knots and offered her another rope: “I hope you still know how to tie down a ship.” She did. Just another perk of growing up in the Lightstone family. Her nimble spell quickly weaved the rope into a turn and two half hitches, then moved its pinkish gleam to subjugate another. Soon, the whole ship was moored securely to the mountainside, leaving them free to discuss other matters. Twilight spoke first: “So what’s this all about? First mom tells me you’ve all prepared some surprise and now this. You’ve repaired your ship after all this time. Why?” She kinda suspected the answer and was having mixed feelings. Her eyes moved from her dad to the ship’s elegant hull, then back again. Night Light made an apologetic expression: “Well, your mother and I have been talking and we think you’re old enough to fly on your own. Some small trips across Equestria, you know, to broaden your horizons.” “But I only just got my license!” “Even more reason to practice.” “On this ship? It’s practically a flying house!” “It’s not so bad once you get to know her,” he led his daughter into the interior: “I admit that she can be a little moody, but she’s very safe, even if you crash her.” He proudly knocked onto its metal frame: “Yes sir, Wayward Star can really take a beating!” “That sounds … reassuring.” They walked past the pantry and into a narrow space furnished with a berth, a miniature stove, and a lean wardrobe. There were a few larger rooms spread across the hold with closed ports built into their sides. Twilight grinned and puffed out a mocking snicker: “So, do I also get cannons?” “We don’t have any at home, but if you ever manage to get your hooves on some black market stuff, I recommend the 75 model.” “You’re kidding, right?” He probably was, though she could never know. Her dad was a retired adventurer after all. The use of gunpowder and other explosives were strictly prohibited inside Equestria, with fireworks being the only exception. Only some renegades were bold and skilled enough to operate such volatile weaponry. The protruding gondola under the ship’s bow was made into a spacious cabin sporting two comfortable cushions and a fairly complicated control panel riddled with levers, valves, and gauges. Twilight’s muzzle stretched into an unwitting smile. She suddenly felt a great urge to test them all. Winsome Hills were only a day’s ride away from Canterlot. One little trip couldn’t hurt. Night Light who has until now left her to inspect the cabin on her own seated himself onto the copilot’s cushion and put his hoof among the controls: “Are we clear for takeoff, Captain Sparkle?” She finally peeled her sparkling eyes of the panel: “Yes. I think we are.” Sounds of running water and hushed whisperings of spruce trees spread across the steep slopes above Canterlot. Mountain choughs played in the clear blue sky where white peak met the patchy sea of dwarf pines and scree. Moonlight Brilliance was ascending a steep stairwell that led inside a hidden place, a trip that she had made many, many times before. As the Captain of the Royal Guard and Celestia’s most trusted student, Moonlight usually briefed the Queen about less important matters in time of her evening relaxation. Today she was climbing these steps before the sun has even managed to reach its zenith. The reason for such an untimely visit was silently striding besides her. Colonel Grom Rainsteel wasn’t particularly large for a male griffin, yet still he towered over her head by at least three hooves. His grim goshawk anterior and feline body were both covered in distinct metal barding of Hyperborean imperial forces, and to make matters worse, the whole thing was adorned in a comprehensive array of battle gear, most of which was very illegal inside Equestrian borders. She threw him a nervous glance and saw that all the killing instruments were still happily bouncing around with each of his steps. The griffin had demonstrated substantial resistance to disarmament and had sent four of her best subordinates to the infirmary just a few moments after arrival. He would likely have done even more regrettable things if she hadn’t agreed to take him to the Queen along with all his clutter. Colonel, though still fairly young, was one of those beasts forgotten by time, a relic that hadn’t yet stepped into the modern era of peace and prosperity. Nothing ever got solved by violence. Moonlight knew that better than most. Upon reaching the entrance, two unicorn guards with stern glares suspiciously scanned the griffin who fortunately showed no signs of irritation. “It’s all right. I take full responsibility.” The guards nodded and stepped aside, allowing them unimpeded passage into the mountain. Inside was an airy hall lined with rows of tall stone pillars. Heated glacial meltwater gushed forth from fountains chiseled in likenesses of many fantastic monsters and gathered itself in a vast central pool. This was the very heart of Old Canterlot, the first unicorn sanctuary built within a mountain cavern. They have found Queen Celestia resting by the pool. Her colorful mane and tail were both freshly washed and neatly tied into loose knots, her white body still wet from the bath. It appeared that her after-work routine has remained unchanged despite the griffon’s sudden, unannounced visit. “My Queen,” Moonlight bowed before her liege: “Colonel Grom Rainsteel of the Imperial Hexenjägers.” Queen Celestia raised her head and nodded to the griffin with a peaceful, content expression: “Colonel.” “Queen Celestia,” the griffin returned the nod, though he did not bow, nor did he lower his glare. Then he suddenly unpacked a large sack and emptied it with one swift thrust of his claw. Moonlight’s skin crawled in disgust as a giant, greasy eyeball started rolling towards Celestia. The Queen remained unmoved by the griffin’s action. Her shining magic stopped the eyeball in its sticky tracks and lifted it up for a closer inspection. After a few moments gazing into its golden iris, she pointed her muzzle back at the griffin: “It seems you’ve taken care of the problem.” “For now,” the griffin’s answer bore a grim undertone reflected in his unkind eyes: “Now it’s time for our equine allies to do their part.” “And we shall,” the Queen agreed: “Our aid shall be arriving shortly. Make sure it’s properly guarded.” “Aye, I’ll send a wolper immediately,” the griffin nodded, this time with a bit more effort. Celestia returned the eye back to its new owner: “Feel free to stay in Canterlot as long as you like. As far as replenishing your strength is concerned, I recommend Joe’s Dinner. That’s just right from the castle’s entrance. With a little guidance, I’m sure they’ll know how to make you a proper meal.” “I shall take your word for it. Queen,” with that last word, the griffin bagged his gruesome prize and strode off. As the tapping of talons disappeared through the sunlit entrance, Celestia tilted her head slightly to the side: “Miss Pie.” A cheerful pink mare with curly mane peeled off from the shadows in a series of springing hops and bowed before Celestia. “Would you be so kind and show our friend around the city? We don’t want him blowing up an entire neighborhood because of some terrible misunderstanding.” “Okie dokie lokie!” the mare saluted and started prancing after Grom in that specific, leisurely manner that made Moonlight feel uneasy every time she met this particular member of the Queen’s personal investigation agency. “What troubles you now my merry student?” Celestia’s words made her realize they were alone: “Nothing … It’s just … this griffin …” Celestia chuckled: “Quite a charmer isn’t he?” “My Queen, I must apologize,” Moonlight lowered her head in shame: “I have let an armed beast into the Sanctum.” “Don’t take it so hard upon yourself my merry student. It would be more foolhardy if you attempted to disarm him.” She paused and gazed beyond the entrance: “Do you know how ones like Grom are called in other lands?” She didn’t, so she remained silent. “They call them Horn Hunters, beasts formidable enough to fell even those versed in arcane arts. Only few ever earn this title, even fewer manage to keep it for long.” “But why are we helping them? These griffins go against everything we ponies stand for!” “Would you rather face the horrors of the world alone? Would you have me forsake them out of principle and allow only ponies to shield us from the vast unknown? We do not always have the luxury to choose our allies my merry student, and griffins, as feral and stubborn as they may be, have stood by our side since the Crystal War. They may not know much about peace and harmony, but they do know war better than anypony.” Crystal War. Once upon a time a dark power had enslaved the equines and yaks of the north, and marched them upon Equestria, locking it in perpetual strife. It was only when it had decided to go against the Hyperborean Empire that the tide had turned. Despite overwhelming odds, the griffin garrison had emerged victorious on the craggy fields of Deep Karren, pushing the reeling shadow all the way back to its crystal citadel. The battle had been a bloody massacre in which the Imperial airships had rained death upon the slaves caught in twisting gorges below. Even today, one could still find shattered bones and twisted metal beneath the cliffs of Rainbow Falls. War and violence was everything griffins have ever known. It was because of creatures like them that the world was constantly in peril. Aloud, she only let a bit of her frustration slip into careful words: “Still, as the Captain of the Royal Guard, an exemplar to our brave protectors, I must insist that Equestrian laws are being upheld even by their ilk.” Celestia stood up and shook the last droplets off her graceful wings: “Our laws were written with ponies in mind. The primary concern that guided our pens was the safety of our people. Gunpowder and various contraptions that utilize it are second nature to the griffin claws but become a dangerous liability when handled by pony hooves. And if we take a look at the other side of the argument, we see that nopony is forcing unicorns to wear restrictive enchantments around their horns here in Equestria,” she wrapped her damp mane and tail in towels, then took a few steps further into the mountain: “You must learn how to look at things through the eyes of others. Now walk with me.” She took her to the inner wall where flameless crystals drenched the surrounding pillars in a soft blue light. A colossal doorway gaped in the middle, offering a view onto a natural tunnel of wet rock and dripping ceiling. Moonlight’s trot slowed down to a stop: “We’re going to the Inner Sanctum?” “Indeed we are,” the Queen kept walking. She has never grown fond of that strange, mystical place that was hiding behind the doorway. Those lights, the hot dry air, and that constant tingling sensation along the spine have made her develop a sort of aversion to its presence. A soft golden glow was becoming increasingly brighter as the mares approached the tunnel’s end where it transformed into a ghostly radiance, pulsating and ebbing like weightless liquid through the still dusk. In the middle of this aura was a wondrous pale tree that stretched and coiled its many elegant branches towards the high ceiling above where holes in the mountain supplied its transparent phantom leaves with beams of sunlight. Its thick roots bore into the solid rock, displacing many a protrusion from deep below. A single small pearl shone on a distant branch dressed in bright golden sheen mixed with delicate crimson hues. Celestia approached and put her glowing horn onto the surreal surface that stirred like liquid before solidifying back into smooth milky bark: “At long last, the Ambrosia has blessed us with another fruit,” she threw a somber look at Moonlight who has decided to stay at the entrance: “It’s nearly rip. You do understand what this entails?” She did. The fruit had appeared the same way as described in the ancient unicorn scrolls: silently and without fanfare that usually came with harvests of magical variety. Ambrosia was the embodiment of equine magic and its fruits had only appeared a few times thorough the entire course of pony history, always as portents of great change. The Queen raised her head high and unfurled the towels, allowing her flowing locks to play within the magic glow: “Notify the Council and brief your ranks,” her gaze slowly went back to the tree and its shining fruit: “We must make preparations.”
  2. Hey. You know what really grinds my gears? Reboot titles. We all know that Hollywood shoots out reboots like a rapid-fire crap machine. Some of them are actually good and warranted, though. Many are grave injustices. But what annoys me to no end is when they give the reboot the exact same title as the original! No subtitle, nothing to differentiate it! This drives me f*ckin nuts, because you constantly have to describe which one you're talking about. Dates are ascribed to movies and games just to be able to tell what we're talking about. Take these for example: DOOM. Are we talking about this: Or this? Star Trek. This? Or this? Tomb Raider. This? Or this?! Ghostbusters. This?! OR THIS?!! I think I've made my case. Give them a frigging subtitle! Tomb Raider Origins, Star Trek Reborn, y'know, something like that! Instead we have to call them Tomb Raider 2013, Ghostbusters 2016, New Star Trek, Abrams Star Trek, sh*t like that. AAARRG!!! It burns me so much!! I had to type in the dates or "original" just to find the right images on Google! AAAARRRR!!!! Franchises that did it right? The Dark Knight, Man of Steel. What a novel idea. They didn't just call it Batman, and Superman. Now we know what we're talking about. The moral of the story is give reboots a different title or a subtitle, god dammit!
  3. Hi everypony, I was wondering what different forms of MLP merchandise everypony has been enjoying lately? Unlike many I actually love how the new brushable ponies look, even better than before! What do you guys think?
  4. I really despise this reboot. The original show was golden until seasons 5 and 6 (they were alright, but they really weren't the same show) but this reboot is just half-Clarence, trendy garbage. Tell the story! Don't break your neck trying to make it trendy and for this generation! Who cares?!
  5. Hi to anyone who reads this! A few months ago, I came up with the idea of an alternate universe (or reboot? I’m not entirely sure what this would be called, haha) and I just wanted to think up some ideas. I wrote the plot (or what I have of the plot) down below. Gwendolyn is a black sheep in her family -- or more accurately, the cow among ponies. Adopted into a prestigious line of unicorns, Gwen has spent her entire life trying to achieve expectations. Every family gathering and social event felt like suffering to her, being faced with the same question every time -- why would they adopt a magicless cowpony? Gwen never understood why her family adopted her -- her parents seem to regard her with slight disdain, and her sister treats her like a doormat. As a vacation for her nineteenth birthday, Gwen’s parents send her to their summer home in a small town for a while, but on the train ride there Gwen gets lost and ends up in the farming town of Ponyville. While trying to find her way back home to the city of Gallopin, Gwen takes up a job at the local museum to keep afloat. However, she soon realizes that Ponyville has little to no libraries or proper museums. While there, she meets her coworker Curio Facade, who despises his hometown of Ponyville and has always aspired to attend a prestigious magic school. The two become acquaintances and they take care of the run-down museum together. A strange amulet in the exhibit catches Gwen’s eye, and Curio explains that it’s called the Amulet of Rebirth. However, he also says that any powers it has are only an old mares’ tale. Later that night, it’s Gwen’s turn to clean each of the cases. As she begins to clean the amulet’s case, the amulet begins to glow in her hooves and then sparks with a blaze. Gwen realizes that this amulet isn’t just the product of an old mares’ tale. She knows that by law, any objects with magical properties are to be immediately sent to the Magic Society, or at least the Royal Guard will come to transport it to the society. However, Gwen disobeys the law and smuggles the amulet in her scarf, sneaking it back to her hotel room. That’s pretty much all I have for the story right now, but I do have an idea of the characters! Gwen (Gwendolyn) - An empathetic and determined young cowpony, Gwen is passionate about her interests, a tad to the dismay of others. However, she can be hard headed and tends to speak before she thinks. Tending to her museum, Gwen takes pride in history and those who came before her. She’s very meticulous and studious, but learns to take time for herself. She loves to study history and magic. Even though her adoptive family was quite wealthy, Gwen pretty much grew up on her own. Curio Facade - A very ambitious young stallion, Curio expects the best in life and no less. He can be very cynical at times, sarcastic, and studious, but he is earnest. However, he can be a bit uptight, and can seem a bit cold from the first meeting, but gladly opens up to his closest friends. He struggles with finding balance in his life. Curio longs to achieve his dreams of attending prestigious magic schools and societies, but after he meets Gwen and the rest of his friends, he hesitates in reaching for it. Bumble Breeze - An imaginative mare, Bumble can create all sorts of contraptions for her plants. She’s very outgoing to everyone she meets, and it's hard to get a bad first impression of her, though she can be seen as too brash. One day, she aspires for Ponyville to return to its former glory, but with her parents’ wishes for her to engage in more practical opportunities for someone with her disability (she has a missing back leg, which affects her flying ability), she has a challenge ahead of her. Minty - A clumsy but well meaning young mare, Minty loves to spend time with her friends. Sometimes her clumsiness comes at the cost of her self-image, and she sometimes is self-conscious of herself. She loves to wear socks and even knits socks for her loved ones. However, Minty still is unsure of what her cutie mark means, and whether she has a talent or purpose at all. Junebug - Bumble Breeze’s younger sister, Junebug spends her time out of school by helping her sister create inventions. She enjoys collecting bugs, seashells, and other trinkets she finds around Ponyville. Junebug can be shy at first glance, but opens up once she gets to know somepony. In terms of the worldbuilding of this alternate universe, I don’t have an exact history, but I do have some aspects of the world: Rather than earning their cutie marks, all ponies are born with them, and throughout their life they discover the meaning of their mark (ie. talent for baking, talent for caring for animals, etc). However, it IS possible for ponies to be born without marks, or also known as Markless. Markless ponies usually never gain their marks later in life and are permanently markless. They are often shunned from society and are outcasts, although some marked ponies do feel a bit of sympathy for them. Unicorns are not born with their horns, but rather a small gem at the top of their head where their horn will grow. Over the next few months of their life, their horn will grow and develop into an actual unicorn horn. Pegasi, however, are born with their wings but will shed a few baby feathers over their childhood. (So the Flurry Heart situation would be much different in this universe, haha) While there is a “Royal” Guard, there aren’t really monarchs in this world, or at least there are none in this alternate Equestria. Equestria is ruled by a council of ponies, all made up of pegasi, earth ponies, and unicorns. It’s unknown how many ponies make up the council. Equestria’s capital is also Gallopin. It is entirely possible for ponies to have cutie marks but never have a special talent or purpose. That’s all I have for right now, but I just wanted to write down my ideas!

    Movies/TV MST3K is coming back!

I am pretty sure everyone knows by now, but MST3K is getting a reboot! Joel Hodgson has completed the KickStarter and said he got new actors for the new reboot of MST3K!
  7. Hey, everyone, your friendly neighbourhood Sunny Fox speaking... so I thought I'd start a new series on my blog... Cartoon Show Classics. This will basically be an exploration of the cartoon shows I grew up watching, delving into setting, characters, story lines, etc and why I feel they were awesome, while still being aware of their faults (every show has them, after all). While I may occasionally delve into the creators / context in which they were created, this really is not supposed to be the Wikipedia Lite version of these shows, but more my own opinions and feelings about them. While definitely being beasts of different colour, please don't be surprised if one or two anime manage to sneak in with the more western style of cartoons. It will take me a while to ramp up, and the release schedule may be a bit all ova da place, but I hope you like it. First up, the nearest and dearest to my heart: the amazing world of ReBoot. (That's the name of the show, it's not a reboot of anything, those pretty much always suck. Anyhoo...) I come from the Net… through systems, peoples and cities… to this place… Mainframe! My format: Guardian. “To Mend and Defend.” To defend my new-found friends; their hopes and dreams. To defend them from their enemies… <<Music and Clips from the current season>> They say the User lives outside the Net, and inputs Games for pleasure. No one knows for sure… but I intend to find out… ReBoot! The Opening Narration by Bob – For the first two seasons, anyhow… The Setting: Mainframe and the Net Did you ever wonder if the characters in your favourite game had their own sentience? Their own lives, their own experiences, beyond just what happens in the game itself…? Well, that’s pretty much what ReBoot is about – the world inside your computer, where the games you input for pleasure are a life-and-nullification reality for its inhabitants. Set inside a computer called Mainframe, the series deals with the adventures and escapades of the inhabitants of the computer, visualized as a modern city with skyscrapers, parks, office buildings and restaurants, floating in an infinite sea of energy. The people of this world are divided into sprites, who are more human looking, and the decidedly less so binomes. Mainframe itself is merely one System within the broader world of The Net. No prizes for guessing what that represents. Our main character, Bob, comes from a more advanced System merely referred to as the Super-Computer, and is frequently faced with the reality that Mainframe is decidedly less sleek and sophisticated than what he is used to. (Think of it as Ponyville vs Canterlot.) One of the main conceits of the series is that Mainframe at large is aware that something called the User (aka you and I) exists, but is so much greater than and removed from their current reality so as to seem positively Lovecraftian in nature. What is certain, though, is that from time to time, the User sends Game Cubes to the city. Any part of the city, as well as those who live there, that end up inside the Cube are trapped in the Game and forced to battle the User (or more specifically, an avatar controlled by the User) for their very existence. If they lose, the section of the city where the Game Cube sits will be destroyed, and all the inhabitants will become Nulls, mindless slug-like creatures with very little semblance of who they once were. What keeps this from being straight up horror is that there is something the Mainframers can do when trapped inside a Game. By double tapping their icon (a badge-like thing that contains their Personal ID – long story, will explain more later…) and intoning “By the power of Grayskull!”, I mean “ReBoot!”, the Mainframer's appearance is altered and they can access information and equipment from the Game Cube itself, putting them on a more even footing with the User. So, if you ever were on the verge of winning a game, but then the computer “cheated” and got the best of you… well, now you know why! Apart from the User and the Game Cubes, the world of Mainframe presents many challenges and dangers for our heroes to overcome. These include (of course) our villains, but there are also tears (pronounced like tear in paper, not as in crying), glitches in their world that appear as shining orbs of light, radiating enough energy to wreck a room. Guardians, such as Bob, can either repair tears, or harness the energy to create portals to other Systems. (This is pretty much explained all within the first episode, so no spoiler warning for you.) And there are a few more surprises to be had, too. As the series progresses, it moves from being very episodic in nature, with occasional double episodes, to having long continual story arcs, as the characters change and develop… sometimes so much as to be virtually unrecognizable… but that is a story for another time. For now, let me introduce you to our cast: Our Heroes Bob, a.k.a. Guardian 452 Our hero and protagonist (plus opening narrator) Bob arrives in Mainframe just prior to the events of the first episode. Bob is a Guardian, basically an elite kind of police officer. The two main facets of the Guardian Code (To Mend and Defend) pretty much sum up his two main tasks within Mainframe… to fix tears and to defend the general population from the actions of viruses (not viruses as in it-that-shall-not-be-named - here viruses are humanoid characters, like sprites.) His companion Key Tool (unique to Guardians) is named Glitch, a Do-Anything Robot that sits on his wrist and does most of his work for him (you’ll see what I mean). Bob is known for being very intelligent in a lateral-thinking, flies-by-the-seat-of-his-pants kind of way. He’s not big on planning, but generally astute enough to handle whatever comes his way so as to seem like he had it in control the whole time. This is pretty much the opposite of the way that Dot (described below) does things, so it’s a source of much of the Belligerent portion of the Belligerent Sexual Tension between the two in the earlier parts of the series. Despite the opening narration, Bob never really does attempt to learn the truth about what the User is, possibly because it's literally impossible for him to do so. You can't casually call up Cthulu and ask him if he exists, now can you? Dot Matrix Dot Matrix (named after an old type of printer) is an entrepreneur and business owner of (eventually) most of Mainframe, although her main business is Dot’s Diner, a popular fast food joint and one of the most frequently visited locales. An intelligent, no-nonsense kind of person, she likes to have everything planned down to the fine details, to a point where it can become unhealthy (a focus of some episodes). She does through planning and foresight what Bob does with quick wit and athleticism. Although when called upon to do so, Dot has shown a few times that she is force to be reckoned with, Action Girling it up with the best fiction has to offer. Underestimate her at your peril. (Oh, and her voice actor, Kathleen Barr also voiced Trixie - so if you want to hear her as an actually enjoyable character, definitely watch ReBoot! Hmm? What's that? No, I will not stop taking potshots at Trixie! Silly rabbit.) Enzo Matrix For the first two seasons, Enzo fills the tagalong kid archetype. Dot’s little brother, he is wide-eyed and idealistic, and really looks up to Bob, frequently leaping onto him to knock him over and sit on his chest while babbling a-mile-a-minute about the latest events and aspiring to be a Guardian. Despite being prone to making mistakes and looking before he leaps (he is a kid, after all), Enzo is at heart a good sprite who wants to help his sister and Bob keep Mainframe safe. He is also lonely due to having few other sprites his own age to play with. He does have a companion of sorts, though. Frisket Why do I hear "Back in Black" playing in my head? Oh, well... Frisket is a large gold and metallic red dog that, while feral, has adopted Enzo and generally hangs around him when not off on his own. (He also has an engine under his nose – just thought you might like to know that.) Frisket is willing to defend Enzo to the death, but he really doesn’t like Bob, and will growl at him or chew up his stuff if given the chance. While he is unable to talk (although he clearly understands what others say to him) and is entirely canine in behaviour and mannerisms, he is in fact a sprite. He has a great sense of smell he can use to track others, and he is strong enough to catch a cannon-ball in mid-flight, as well as prevent an ABC, a kind of flying tank, from lifting off (until the tailgate breaks off, that is…) Despite his great qualities, he is not someone Enzo can relate to on an intellectual or emotional level. Enter… AndrAIa A second season arrival, AndrAIa is a young game sprite, an artificially intelligent game character that Enzo meets and befriends in her introductory episode. Being a denizen of a game, AndrAIa is doomed to leave Mainframe when / if our heroes win… luckily, she thought to download a backup version of herself onto Enzo (specifically his icon), allowing her (or this version of her, at least) to exit the game and live within the “real world” of Mainframe. Since the game in which she originated was set in the ocean, her clothing and accessories have a Little Mermaid, under-da-sea kind of aesthetic. She also has scaled skin, gills and poisoned barbs for fingernails, but all in all, she’s a sweet and naïve girl who quickly attaches herself to Enzo, becoming his inseparable companion thereafter. Binomes The binomes form the bulk of the population of Mainframe, and therefore serve as background characters, for the most part. Binomes, representing the zeroes and ones of binary machine language, come in two principal types. Zero binomes are basically balls with arms and legs and have two eyes, while One binomes are three stacks blocks, with a single eye and mouth on the top block, arms coming from their middle block, and legs attached to their lower block. Both types of binomes can come in both genders, and there really is not much to distinguish one from the other – except in certain cases, such as… The Crimson Binome aka Captain Capacitor aka Gavin A software pirate (which in this world means “pirate” with all the trappings thereof), Captain Capacitor is the one binome leader of his ragtag crew of rapscallions and Captain of the “Saucy Mare”. After initially being introduced raiding Mainframe and stealing things, he eventually becomes a useful ally. Mr. Christopher (See image above) Captain Capacitor’s first mate, Mr. Christopher is rather timid, and is always keeping a running tally of potential profit vs. damages/downtime/resource management. Princess Bula An Amazonian one binome, Princess Bula is taller than most sprites, and bulkier, to boot. She speaks with an exaggerated slow and simple voice, but is physically a match for even Bob. She is also not really a princess, but no one is brave enough to tell her different. (Oh, and Kathleen Barr voices her too… it’s probably why she talks the way she does, so it’s not so obvious it’s the same person.) The Pirates Perfectly piratical pirates, they’re all about swilling grog and leaping to trim the main mast when shouted at. A number of them get names over the series, but all in all, they’re pretty much the same character. Villains Megabyte One might expect that in a digital world viruses would be the villains, and indeed they are. The first villain we are introduced to is Megabyte, voiced with delightfully elegant, yet still palpable malice by the late, great Tony Jay. Megabyte is Faux Affably Evil to the nth degree. He is well-spoken and largely Large and In Charge, presenting the façade of a gentlemanly Mafia don. Scratch the surface just a bit too much, though, and he can transform into a rampaging beast who will roar and claw his way through his foes with either spikes that he can grow from the backs of his hands ala Wolverine, or just his elongated finger nails, ala Lady Death-strike. Not only superspritely strong (he can pick up and shake this world’s version of a tank like a toy), fast (he ran down the tank in the first place) and endurable (nothing he is subjected to even shows him down for long), as well as incredibly intelligent in his own right, he also has a veritable army of binomes and military vehicles that he has corrupted into his service. Megabyte is the driving force of much of the conflict throughout the entire series… just as a good villain should be. Hack and Slash Megabytes Elite Enforcers… for a certain value of “elite”, at any rate. Your typical Dumb Muscle duo, Hack and Slash are a team of a red and blue sprite that look like top heavy robots with ball bearings for feet. While also being extremely strong, they tend to ruin whatever plan Megabyte has going due to their incompetence and lack of intelligence. It isn’t really until later seasons that they exhibit any real differences in behaviour. Slash (blue) is voiced by Garry Chalk (i.e Optimus Primal) and Hack (red) by Scott McNeil (i.e Rat-trap). While they fear and obey Megabyte, they are by no means as evil as he is, and eventually start exhibiting a kind inner nature (especially Slash). Hexadecimal Where Megabyte represents the far extreme of Order, Hexadecimal is his polar opposite, representing Chaos. Her powers are varied and fairly reminiscent of Scarlet Witch from the Marvel franchise. She can levitate at will, use telekinesis and create and launch gigantic blasts of red energy. She also shows an ability to control Nulls to a degree. Her power is often described as “transfinite” within the show, which pretty much means she can pack more of a punch than any other being, while still being limited. Her main feature is her face… or perhaps, lack of one. She wears a Tragedy/Comedy type mask that is static, her changes in expression for the most part taking place between scenes, or in jump cuts. If ever “shown” on screen, the actual transition is hidden by the movement of her arm or hand, usually with a subtle "whoosh" audio cue. The expressions she shows range from just slightly Uncanny Valley to utterly Nightmarish (just see her pictures above). She is simply Mane-iac levels of bonkers, which is usually why she doesn’t just wreck the show, either losing interest/focus or being manipulated into undoing her own works. She also has a pretty obvious crush on Bob, which may or may not be a plot point in any given episode. Her companion / familiar is Scuzzy, a combination of pet cat and looking glass. (Pictured below) Daemon A so-called Super-Virus introduced during the events of Season 2/3, but unseen until Season 4. To go into too much detail would be to spoil a lot of the series, but she is extremely powerful, able to brainwash almost anyone into serving her. Supporting Characters Phong The de facto leader of the system (its Command Dot Com), Phong has great wisdom and a deep understanding of the computer world, which he will bestow upon anyone… who can beat him at Pong, his favourite game. Although this does become less of an issue as the series progresses. Perhaps because Bob totally crushes him every time we see the two play. His two favourite phrases appear to be “Oh, dear…” and “This is not the Super-Computer, Bob”. He plays a sort of Confucian mentor, often making cryptic statements and calling sprites who are not his children “my son” and “my daughter”. He also looks more like whatever ET is than a regular humanoid sprite, but he is still one of the biggest forces for Good in the series. Mike the TV While he ostensibly belongs to Bob, who really, really regrets losing the remote, Mike is a sentient, animate TV with legs. He is frequently loud and annoying, prone to using his screen/face to show infomercials such as “Bucket ‘o Nothing for just 99.99.99!” He also moonlights as Mainframe’s main reporter / news announcer. Although he does get on the other characters’ nerves most of the time, he has in the past stepped up to the plate to assist our heroes. And sometimes he just flat out creates disasters, but we'll get to that. Mouse An in-universe Hacker, Mouse is originally introduced as an antagonist hired by Megabyte to do covert acts of a nefarious nature. She also has a history with Bob, the two of them having clashed before in the Super-Computer, and Bob even managing to “arrest” her, despite her skills. After vanishing (literally) for a few episodes after her introduction, Mouse eventually returns and joins in as an anti-villain and eventually an ally of the protagonists. She also has a katana... And a ship... named "Ship"... look, nobody said she was creative in naming things. She also has a Southern drawl. With all of our main (first season) cast introduced, I think this is a great stopping point. I’ll save a summary of the episodes for next time, and there will probably be some kind of wrap-up and general discussion before I most onto the next show I’d like to talk about. For some reason, I have a lot of time sitting at home these days, so expect those when they arrive. So, have you watched ReBoot? If so, what are your thoughts on the series? If you didn't... might you like to now? Any other general comments of encouragement, condemnation or .... no, pretty much just the first one, please. Stay safe, stay healthy, and of course, stay sunny side up!
  8. So in the past two years I've noticed Disney seems to be on a roll with a modern revolution. Instead of coming up with new fascinating, original ideas, they have decided to revive old iconic classics and remake them in live-action format, with voice casts featuring new and old members (given how some older ones have died and child voice actors are now adults with deeper voices). Some will stick stitch-by-stitch to the original movie's storyline, while others will be spinoffs or reboots centered around one character. Honestly I'm not sure how to feel about this. Given the incredible new technologies that have come into the world of filmmaking, the idea of all those simple hand-drawn 2D cartoon characters being reimagined in realistic 3D seemed very exciting for both Disney and their fans - well, some of them. Others are more on the lines of "Why bother with stories of old? Yeah they were amazing then, why try to make them more amazing now? Like, what's the point? People still watch 80s and 90s movies in 2018 and will continue to do so!" What do you guys think? Is this Reboot Revolution the right way to go for Disney? (The teaser trailer for Dumbo was briefly #2 Trending on YouTube earlier this week) Here are some of the movies that will be revived in live-action: Dumbo (following the original storyline, with some possible twists) A sequel to the 2016 The Jungle Book movie A sequel to the 2014 Maleficent movie Peter Pan (following the original storyline) Tinkerbell (her backstory) The Lion King (following the original storyline) Aladdin (following the original storyline) Cruella (villain backstory/childhood) The Little Mermaid (info is very loose - i.e. voice actors saying that they'd like to play certain characters)
  9. I'm working on a pilot episode script for my own personal MLP reboot, because ya know what? I really enjoy colourful horse creatures going on magic adventures where they kick butt and learn empathy and kindness. That is my JAM. Anyways, I'm stuck on some parts of the outline/story, and I'm struggling to finish it! Right now, I have a main character named Hopper who has to get rid of his Tantabus (a nightmare creature and spirit of self-harm that arose from Hopper's magic spells.) The pilot episode is about his journey through his fears, and the rewards that lay on the other side (friendship, acceptance, trust, support, etc.) There are some key things I want to establish about the world Hopper inhabits as well, and how it differs from the original series. Anyone have any suggestions? I have a Discord and Google doc, if you're interested in helping me create!
  10. Everywhere on the internet, I see that MLP Generation 5 might come out by 2021 or something, but I don't know if this is false. I've also heard several claims about the main characters being replaced with new characters to start a fresh story and to embody a different direction for Generation 5. And if they do keep the same characters, I hope their personalities are the same. And by the way, does anyone know if Equestria Girls is still making episodes or mini series? I felt kinda lugubrious when I finished the show, I'm like OMG :((
  11. As some of you may know, Sonic the Hedgehog is my favorite video game series to date. I loved every game from Sonic 1 to Generations, I even loved the bad ones like 06, Shadow, and Black Knight. But due to SEGA's recent financial loss, they are looking to reboot the entire Sonic series. And, its taking alot of inspiration from Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure. This, to me, doesn't sound very good. But anyways, here is the list of the supposed changes to Sonic: SEGA and Sonic Team are looking to Monetize Sonic. Its gonna be a massive and total reboot. They are commited to the reboot. Speed, Platforming, and surreal environments are the same. Sonic and Eggman's rivalry will continue. Sonic and Eggman will get a massive makeover. Everything else (Yes, everything.) are seeing radical changes. Including Tails. New universe and characters. New gameplay and gimmicks. New engine. No concern of photo realism, Might be Like Burnout Paradise. Zones return as massive levels with a bunch of missions. Could have models/figures for collection to target the young audience. Also used to unlock special features in-game. New cartoon series is thought of. Classic characters are DLC. From my impressions, most of it doesn't sound good. With the new universe, and ideas from other games, I just think it won't be such a good idea. Also, about the makeovers, I think that Sonic and Eggman will look ridiculous. Granted, that may be because I am thinking of Skylanders, but still... I also like the fact they are having figures (Because I like to collect those) and a cartoon show (Maybe), but, I hope they don't focus to little on the game itself, and just make a bunch of figurines to collect. I have the feeling the gameplay will be radically changed as well, and not for the better. If SEGA is inspired by Skylanders and Burnout Paradise, I think its a bad idea to take those ideas, and put them into Sonic. Don't get me wrong, I am welcome to change, and I like change, but it doesn't seem like it fits. In short: I think it won't turn out so well because of the radical change and ideas from said games. What is your opinion on this?
  12. As you many of you know this already, the super bowl's commercial released a teaser trailer for The Twilight zone Reboot by Jordon Peele. I'm pretty excited about this actually, not only because The twilight zone is one of my favorite old show but Jordon Peele is a horror cinema's genius. After a successful movie "Get out" I knew Jordon will be a perfect candidate to make a reboot of the Twilight Zone. now... I hope this is not a "super bowl" joke but I believe it's legit. The series will be aired on April 1st. https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/wjmn59/twilight-zone-teaser-jordan-peele-host-rod-serling-release-date-vgtrn Free feel to share some thoughts on this.

    Movies/TV Duck Tales Reboot

When I first heard about the Duck Tales reboot I was a little skeptical, I mean most reboots aren't (to put it nicely) very good or anything like the original. But today I found out something that makes me want to check it out :David Tennant has been cast as Scrooge McDuck! I know, this doesn't necessarily mean it's going to be good or like the original, but anything with the Tenth Doctor is worth checking out! I know I'm going to check it out, but what are your thoughts? Here's the link to the original article: http://tennantnews.blogspot.com/2016/12/david-tennant-cast-as-scrooge-mcduck-in.html
  14. [MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD] I don't know how many people remember the old Reboot cartoon where people known as sprites lived in a computer system known as Mainframe, but as far as I'm concerned it was one of the most well written animated shows of all time (and one of the earliest CGI shows). The other day I had this horrible dream that they brought back Reboot as a live action series that was basically a ripoff to Power Rangers and had almost nothing to do with the original series. And the worst part of the dream is that they waited until the finale to bring back the original characters and the fans of the original show were portrayed as basement-dwelling neckbeards. Good thing that was just a dream. Oh wait....

    Movies/TV Rebooting Classic TV

I heard on the radio today that Netflix is rebooting Lost In Space. For you youngins, it was an old TV show from back in the '60s. A new pilot came out in 2004 but wasn't picked up as a series; you can watch this on YouTube. There's also a movie that came out in '98. The DJ asked the listeners, what classic TV show would you like to see come back as a new series, and I thought I pass that along here. So what would you like to see come back? Me? I'd like to see a new Green Hornet series. I really liked the original that came out in the mid-sixties. It starred Van Williams and Bruce Lee (his first TV role). It was made by the same folks that produced the Batman series, but GH was a bit more darker and dramatic. I also saw the GH movie and really liked it, even though I think it bombed in the theater, and would like to see the same kind of characterizations. I also though Time Tunnel would be cool, but time travel's been done to death. Than I thought, how 'bout Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, but that's already been done as SeaQuest DSV.
  16. As you all are aware, it seems this generation of My Little Pony is about to come to an end, with a new generation coming in 2020(Wish the Simpsons and Family Guy did the same thing). But that being said, I had my own idea for a My Little Pony reboot. I call it "My Little Pony: Orphans of Equestria." The series would be much darker than Friendship is MAgic, with a color scheme inspired by Steven Universe. Also Backstory: Equestria. A place where Ponies of all sorts trot and gallop their way through. A place made of Magitek. Magic-based Technology. But under all that happiness lies a system rotten to the core. Once Equestria had Princesses and a Parliament that ruled with a kind spirit. It is now ruled by Chancellor Abacus Cinch, with an Iron Hoof. The whole world now lives in a facade of harmony, with non-Pony species being rounded up into slave camps. Note: With the exception of Nicole Oliver and Iris Quinn, every Pony will be recast in terms of Voice Actress Celestia Del Sol(Ideal Voice Actress: Nicole Oliver): The Main protagonist of the story. Long ago, Celestia and her sister Luna were cast out from Equestrian Leadership by Abacus Cinch. Since then, she has dedicated her time as caretaker of orphan ponies, with her assistant Sunset Shimmer at her side. But deep on the inside, she is building up a rebellion to save her own kingdom from Cinch. Since then, she has been on the look out for her sister Luna Della Notte Sunset Shimmer(Ideal Voice Actress: Will be recasted. Some ideal actresses include Britt McKilip, Chiara Zanni, and Sophia Ewaniuk) The assistant to Celestia. Long ago, Sunset Shimmer lost her parents to a horrible house fire, and has been adopted by Celestia as a surrogate daughter. She sees the world as a cruel a bitter place, all while Celestia tries to reassure her that it's far from it. Abacus Cinch(Ideal Voice Actress: Iris Quinn): Chancellor of Equestria, now its sole ruler. She overthrew Celestia and Luna to become the ruler of Equestria, even going as far as to abolish the Parliament. Her dream is to create a world where only the strongest Ponies rule, and everyone else is used only for mining out all the resources of the entire planet. A cold and cruel leader, she stops at nothing to gain what she wants. Twilight Sparkle(Ideal Voice Actress: Will be recasted): An orphan unicorn child. She is seen by Sunset Shimmer as more of a younger sister. It is said that she is one of the six children of Harmony that serves as the means of protecting the innocent from evil(Take a wild guess who the other five are). She is more upbeat and full of life compared to Sunset. Starlight Glimmer(Ideal Voice Actress: Will also be recasted): Another orphan unicorn child, and the younger sister of Twilight Sparkle. She was traumatized to the loss of her own parents and has trouble readjusting her life. Sunset and Twilight do what they can to help out their younger sister. Tempest Shadow(Ideal Voice Actress: Ashleigh Ball): The number one soldier of Abacus Cinch, and the leader of Cinch's Templars(Basically a form of a Secret Police). She is as ruthless as her master, and will stop at nothing when it comes to enforcing her rule of law. Diamond Tiara: In the original, she was the spoiled rich alpha bitch of Spoiled Milk and Filthy Rich. This time, she is the daughter of Abacus Cinch. Unlike her previous counterpart, Diamond Tiara is more of a Spoiled Sweet teen who wants to see the beauty of the world, only for her mother to keep her isolated from the rest of the world. She dreams of breaking out of her only home so that she may see the world. Little does she know, she plays a part in the rebellion against her mother. Discord(Ideal Voice Actor: Scott McNeil or Vic Mignogna): The Guardian of the Everfree Forest, Spirit of Chaos, and a long time friend of Celestia. He is also the surrogate father of Fluttershy, a timid pegasus who's afraid of stepping out of the forest. Nightmare Moon: A Dark entity who was defeated long ago by Celestia and Luna. Since her defeat, her physical form was split into a number of artifacts that contained a small portion of her power. It is said that Cinch is fusing these artifacts into Luna Della Notte to create a new Nightmare Moon. One important change is that Canterlot is no longer the capital of Equestria. This time, it's Maretropolis, a giant Magitek Mega City bustling with Pony activity. CAnterlot and Ponyville returns, but serve as smaller cities this time around. What are your thoughts on my idea? What would you add to make this appealing?
  17. Reboot of this thread Rules: 1. This is my Game. And I only allow two things. Flawless calculations... and beauty! E.g. What I say goes. 2. Heh. Every inch of my work is flawlessly calculated. Look at the perfectly understated silhouette. How can you not see the beauty!? E.g. Don't try to move the plot along, I'll do that. 3. This is subtracting from my arts and crafts time. E.g. If your going to be away from the rp for over 1 week, let me know. Otherwise your character gets removed from the rp. (Ranks being in order of importance) ThunderClan Medicine Cat- Leader- Deputy Queens- Warriors- Apprentices- Kits- WindClan Medicine Cat- Silver Fur- Old silver she cat with green eyes (Blood Drops) Leader- Deputy Queens- Warriors- Apprentices- Kits- RiverClan Medicine Cat- Ice Flower Leader- Deputy Queens- Warriors- Apprentices- Kits- ShadowClan Medicine Cat- Leader- Deputy Queens- Warriors- Apprentices- Kits- P.s. You thinking that the leader is most important? You is wrong. If a leader is lost, the deputy replaces, if they are both lost then the most senior warrior would take over. If a medicine cat is lost, then the other clans would need to provide medical cat training to one chosen by star clan. Medicine cats are ranked the same as 'Teller of the Pointed Stones' or Healers
  18. Now that Samurai Jack is over, do you think Genndy Tartatovsky will do a Sym-Bionic Titan reboot?
  19. So Netflix announced a while back that Mystery Science Theater 3000 is coming back with another series directly to Netflix. I myself am excited cause I love Mystery Science theater 3000. Are you excited? Here's a preview of the new series https://youtu.be/5ct0Z2bQndM
  20. http://www.rotoscopers.com/2015/08/03/jim-hill-ducktales-reboot-is-cg-animated-darkwing-duck-and-kim-possible-reboots-could-follow/ According to this, not only will Duck Tales will be in CGI animated, but there's a possibility that two other well beloved disney cartoons in Darkwing Duck and Kim Possible. Personally, while I'm pleased to hear this possible news, however at the same time, I'm worried how they're going to treat these reboots as: 1. Duck Tales: easily a top ten cartoon for me as it was Duck Tales that first jumpstarted the renaissance the cartoons in the 90's had despite being a late 80's show. It was really one of the first cartoons in the 80's to break out of the whole 'use cartoons to advertise toy products and little else' that plagued alot of the cartoons in the 80's by being a quality cartoon. 2. Darkwing Duck: An underrated cartoon that was one of the better spinoffs from Duck Tales. Sibsy loves this cartoon. 3. Kim Possible: Considered one of the few good disney cartoons in 2000's and many considered the best of the bunch till Phineas and Ferb and Gravity Falls showed up. MLP analyst Ilovekimpossiblealot loves this cartoon. Thus when doing a reboot, it risks making these shows worse than what the originals are and it could damage these lofty opinions that were garnered for their effort and work. Look at Teen Titans and Teen Titans Go as an example of how a reboot can ruin a classic. On the other hand, seeing how serious Disney wants to cash in on the huge success of cartoons this decade is a good thing and I hope it can continue that trend in the 2020's in a good manner.
  21. There are many games in this world that, while being really good or having very unique concepts, they are forgotten about in time. Tis' the circle of life for some video games and it is a sad thing. There are games that are sooo awesome yet never see the light of day again. Here, we can share some of these. What are some games that you feel should be revived for modern day? It could be as simple porting the game to new systems or full blown remakes or sequels. Here are a couple for me: Windjammers A Neo Geo arcade game that was essentially a take on Pong, but it looks friggin' awesome. I never actually played it but I discovered it recently on YouTube and this is a game that I feel would be amazing today, even if it was just ported. It looks incredibly frantic, fast paced and fun. Stubbs the Zombie This was a comedic zombie game where you actually played as the zombie. The gameplay, while seeming simple at first, was addicting as you would create a zombie army throughout the levels to dispatch of foes more easily, as well as having your own combat abilities as well. I feel like this game would be a massive hit in the modern day and I am surprised that Microsoft has not brought this one back.
  22. http://ca.ign.com/articles/2015/06/09/cartoon-network-unveils-first-look-at-new-powerpuff-girls-series So after 20 years since the original aired we're getting a new incarnation of a show that many of us grew up with. I was a big fan of the original as a kid, I'm looking forward to this reboot. Unfortunately, not all news is good. We still have a year to go before it comes out and it's already causing drama. http://www.avclub.com/article/powerpuff-girls-voice-actor-feels-stabbed-heart-ne-220624 http://www.cartoonbrew.com/voice-acting/powerpuff-girl-actress-on-being-shut-out-of-reboot-a-stab-in-the-heart-114006.html Members of the original cast and crew (Like Lauren Faust, Tara Strong, Craig McCraken) aren't happy with the fact that Cartoon Network hired new voice actors and have been going on twitter posting angry and passive tweets. (Some of these tweets I'll link below) Now, I have to say this. Seriously? This is a reboot, yes? What the hell were you expecting?! This kind of stuff happens all the time whenever there's another entry in a franchise. I mean, yes, It would have been nice if they had asked the original VAs but I'm not expecting them to go around asking every single VA from the original show. This is a new generation, it's a fresh slate. This happens all the time whenever a franchise gets another entry. It's been nearly 20 years since the original aired, this isn't a shock. Allow me to throw in a comparison guys. As you all you all know, I'm a fan of multiple franchises. The ones I bring up mostly are Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Transformers, Spider-Man and Batman. Look at how many incarnations of those four there have been. You might get one VA back, maybe a couple more if you're lucky but you're not going to get the whole cast back. This is really nothing new. I know I bring up TMNT a lot but the comparison is fitting. When the next generation of TMNT comes out I'm not going to expect Rob Paulson, Seth Green, Sean Aston and Greg Cipes to voice the Turtles nor do I think that the original voice actors from the '87 series (Rob Paulson, Townsend Colemen, Cam Clarke and Barry Gordon) should be the only one to voice the turtles. It's the same here. You can't expect the same voice actors to voice the same characters all the time. I think this was really immature of the original cast and crew. I expected better behavior from Tara, Lauren, Craig and everyone else partaking in this tantrum. EDIT: My apologies to the original cast. If it was just Tom Kenny coming back, I'd still think they'd be over-reacting but since they brought back more VAs for the supporting cast and even the VA of one the main villains, now I see the issue. I still take issue with Lauren Faust and Craig McCraken's tweets though.

    Movies/TV Danger Mouse

He's the greatest, he's fantastic, wherever there is danger he'll be there... Danger Mouse, one of the heroes odf my childhood, got a reboot on CBBC. Judging from the first 2 epsiodes I watched, it is amazingly well done, slightly modernized, but still keeping the classic's charm.
  24. As we all know, reboots and terrible, money grubbing sequels are rampant today. I just watched the preview for this Terminator Genisys nonsense. You know, it feels like they're making fun of their own franchise. The whole movie looks like one big internet meme joke. Rather than coming with asinine ways to keep franchises running, it might be nice if they used that money to...idk...come up with something new, perhaps? You know? And then there's the reboots. Not just reboots, but reboots of reboots. Hey, now THERE'S and idea! They should reboot Reboot! Anyway, I believe I heard they're planning an Alien reboot. Wouldn't surprise me. That's really sad. I wonder when the Blade Runner reboot is coming? *shudders* So, my question is, what movie do want to see be made? Or, what movie do you think should be rebooted? I want a reboot of Dune. That's a movie that really deserves a modern, proper, good version. The orignal wasn't very good, imo, and it tried to cram too much into too short of time. We need a version that's about six hours. Like, two 3-hour movies. So what do you want to see?
