  1. I've seen threads for Star Wars and most recently for Spiderman films of this nature, feel like it's about time to make one for Star Trek. I remember sharing my rankings for each film back when for a status update, but I'd say here are mine: Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan. There's definitely a reason why this is the most popular film among the fanbase. Not only does it feature one of Star Trek's most iconic villains in his best portrayal to date, one of the most iconic character deaths in all of film, and a fundamental theme echoed several times during the film that can be described as no less than profound. Star Trek (2009). My dad actually hates this film. I guess I'm not surprised because he's the Star Trek equivalent of a genwunner, but this film does an EXCELLENT job of revamping the original series in a whole new universe, all complexly interwoven with the original universe in such a way as to make a very compelling movie. Also, Pine's Kirk is very underrated. Star Trek VI: the Undiscovered Country. I really like the concept of this film being a sort of sci-fi political thriller. I honestly think this film is a tiny bit underrated even if it's generally considered to be a top 5 film, though I think part of that is my personal bias. The murder mystery part of it could have been made a bit more of a whodunnit, but still a great film in my eyes. Star Trek IV: A Voyage Home. I understand that the popular opinion for this film is that it's second only to Wrath of Khan. I really do like the somewhat campy humor in parts of it and it's change of tone for the series as a whole being more light-hearted than usual even by Star Trek standards, but I have to admit the plot is a little ridiculous, so it's only fourth. Star Trek: First Contact. I think everyone can agree that this is by far The Next Generation's best outing movie-wise. A very solid plot setup with the Borg as the main villain, and an extremely great outing for Data (which is sorely missed in later films) make it a really good film even if it is a bit cheesy and doesn't utilize Worf all that much. Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. This is the one time for the original 9 movies (yes not just the first 6, IMHO) you completely throw "it's odd so it's no good" out the window. This film has some weaknesses in its plot being a bit of a retcon of Wrath of Khan, but it's still definitely a story very worthy of a Trek movie considering that retcon is done in good faith. Star Trek Beyond. I'll admit I was on the fence about this one when I first watched it, but now I'd say it's a pretty solid Trek movie even with its distinct lack of personality. All the pairings in this movie work very well, even if in the end the film doesn't leave much of a mark on me, honestly. It's admittedly the worst of the good Trek films, though. Star Trek: The Motion Picture. I get what they were going for here, being a cinematic experience, but they failed to do anything but make a boring movie I didn't care much to watch. If HALF THE MOVIE is showing the ship off, that's a problem... Also I really don't like that they sideline the main characters in this movie... It's just disrespectful. Star Trek: Insurrection. This movie isn't BAD it's just mediocre. I really liked the premise of this film being about the Federation themselves being the actual villains, and the setup was done rather well. But it does go south after that in such a way as to make it a bit of a slog to go through. Also, there's nothing whatsoever memorable about this one. Star Trek: Into Darkness. They had so much going for this movie in the first half, it looked like a worthy sequel. But in the second half it quickly falls completely flat on its face. I wouldn't say this is the worst film, we're getting to that, but this film is pretty bad for all the wasted potential, Khan's re-use, and the fact Cumberbatch's Khan was absolutely awful... Star Trek: Generations. Star Trek Fan-service: The Movie is what this is. It's a pile of total garbage that has a plothole in its fundamental story so massive you could fit a Borg cube in it. I don't know if the fact that Kirk is somehow still alive after the beginning or the fact he's STILL alive in Picard's time is worse. It felt like a cash grab of humongous proportions. Star Trek V: Final Frontier. Let's address the elephant in the room with this travesty. YOU CAN'T TALK ABOUT GOD IN A SCI-FI MOVIE. Second thing to address this film makes Star Trek as a whole look like a complete joke... I will give it a little credit for the "I need my pain!" line but other than that there is nothing else whatsoever about this movie that isn't awful. I have never seen Nemesis, but from what I've heard I'm sure glad I haven't. How would you rank the Star Trek films? Would be interesting to see different opinions.
  2. what do you think is the biggest rivalry in geekdom? it can be rivalry between to different fandoms like star wars vs star trek, or a character rivalry like batman vs superman. personally the biggest fandom rivalry ive been a part of is thor vs hulk ( thor should always beat hulk). please post your thoughts on which rivalry is the biggest and the biggest rivalry you have been a part of.
  3. Since there's a thread for Star Wars films, I feel like the other Star franchise needs another thread in the same vein. Anyways, I already did a listing of them a few weeks back, so I guess I'll just copy and paste that here. STII: The Wrath of Khan (This really is one of the best movies of all time IMHO) STVIII: First Contact (I've really grown an absolute love for this movie) STVI: The Undiscovered Country (They really went out with a bang here) ST 2009 (XI) (Ten times better than my dad would say it is, because he takes issue with Kelvin's existence) STIII: The Search for Spock (Underrated, and honestly fairly good third installment) STIV: The Voyage Home (Yes, it's not top 5, and I don't care about the complaints) ST: Beyond (It was actually kind of good, definitely an improvement on Into Darkness) STIX: Insurrection (It wasn't THAT bad... Honestly I thought it was OK) STI: The Motion Picture (*Snoring* Huh? Is it over yet? Seriously, though this one's just boring) ST: Into Darkness (Second half was utter garbage, first half was OK so, tenth?) STVII: Generations (This film honestly should be the worst and has every reason to be, sadly it isn't) STV: The Final Frontier (Absolute, utter garbage that needs to be burned with fire) Haven't Seen: STX: Nemesis (And I don't doubt I'm all the better for it... Janeway as an admiral? OVER PICARD? SERIOUSLY?) Even with its, less than savory installments, It manages to have 7 good films with only 3 bad ones (well probably four, but gladly will just not see Nemesis).
  4. Is it possible for a human to completely rid themselves of emotion? I'm not talking about controlling emotion and its expression, but the actual expulsion of feeling emotions. Vulcans from Star Trek have violent emotions that run even deeper than human emotions, yet through the teachings of Surak they have found ways to conceal or even rid their emotions, replacing them with logic. According to the teachings of Surak their are different levels to this (numbered in degree of difficulty): 1.) A control level of one implies that a person is capable of controlling the facial expressions normally exhibited due to an emotion the majority of the time, but still feels the emotion. 2.) Level two implies a person can control all expressions of emotion the majority of the time, but still feels the emotion. 3.) Level three is where emotion is there, but not expressed, or even felt. It has no influence, the majority of the time. 4.) Mastery level four is complete mastery. In this state, the emotion is completely cast out, and is no longer a part of you. This state is also referred to as "Kolinahr". So do you think it would be possible for a human to achieve Kolinahr or come close to it? And would it even be logical or beneficial for a human to attempt this? Without emotions, one would not be able to laugh, to happily smile, etc., which could make socializing very difficult and could affect their relationships, possibly career, and other aspects of their life. Human society expect us to have emotions to some extant despite how they can sometimes make us reckless and impulsive, much different from Vulcan society where it is expected to have no emotions and being emotionless is considered 'normal'. So what do you think? (And I don't mean through surgically altering the brain, so lobotomy doesn't count.)
  5. Just wondering if anybody here watches or used to watch Star Trek. I've seen a considerable amount from each show except for Deep Space 9 which I can't stand to watch. I would say Voyager was my favorite since I've seen every episode and used to watch in on a daily basis. I think Enterprise would come in second. Both my Dad and my Step Dad watch the show quite often so exposure to this show has been unpreventable in my case.
  6. There's a nuclear holocaust. The world is divided into two factions. Which side you on and why?
  7. With "Star Trek: Discovery" premiering tonight on CBS & CBS All Access, I have to wonder how many people are excited for it? Honestly...I'm cautiously optimistic. I know there have been a LOT of issues during production and fans have certainly not been happy with a lot of things, but as someone who grew up with Star Trek and considers it one of the things keep to my development, I remain hopeful. I want to see Discovery succeed. There hasn't been a Trek series since Enterprise was canceled, and I need a series to really follow. So, how about you guys? Any Trek fans here? Any hopes for Discovery, or just want to see it cancelled?
  8. As a nod to William Shatner for his performance on My Little Pony, I'm doing this nod to him by having his character Grand Pear dress up like Captain James T Kirk

  12. Considering Shatners friendship with the great John de Lance and experiencing interest in the Brony fandom and the the show its self. Do you think it's possible will get a cameo by Cpt Kirk himself? I for one would love to see Will in the MLP movie.
  13. Two of the most iconic films in all of sci-fi. Icons in a rivalry of franchises that may never end. But which was the better movie? Does the elation of the Death Star trench top the heart wrenching death of Spock? You decide.
  14. According to a tweet posted on Equestria Daily Jim Miller invited William Shatner to be a guest voice on Friendship is Magic. If William Shatner were to appear, what kind of character do you think he should portray, and what do you think the show should be about?
  15. I have recently been playing Star Trek Online a lot. Possibly an unhealthy amount (No such thing!). Anyway, I was wondering if we had an STO fleet or not, and if so, how many people were interested in the new Romulan faction that will be released in May? If anyone else plays, what do you like/dislike about the game, and what faction do you prefer? My tag is @jadescale1 and I do quite a bit of PVE in the form of STFs and helping newbies with missions and such.
  16. The old school nerd debate stable, Star Trek or Star Wars? Which do you prefer? Star Wars edges just a hair ahead for me since I saw the Special Editions in theaters when I was 6 (7 maybe?) That being said most of my favoritism lies with the Original Trilogy. The Prequels aren't god-awful like some say, but Star Trek TOS and TNG blow them away from my point of view. Also I have to admit I have not seen much of DS9 simply because nobody syndicates it so I've only seen the odd episode of it here or there,
  17. Both have no qualms to assimilate you into their respective kind, or to kill you if you dare resist. Which one would you rather join?

  19. In my little tribute to the late Leonard Nimoy(Spock), I did a drawing of Discord dressed as Spock, giving the vulcan hand sign(Even though I didn't get it 100% right.) Interesting fact: John De Lancie, Discord's voice actor, worked with Leonard Nimoy on the Alien Voices project. This included a skit involving Spock meeting Q. http://daimando.deviantart.com/art/In-memory-of-Leonard-Nimoy-Discord-as-Spock-517413601 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_NMNhBU7Ag8
  20. I don't know how many people heard or read this on the news, but Leonard Nimoy died on this past Friday. You know, February 27, 2015. Well, maybe you haven't heard of him because you've never watched the original Star Trek, because that's what most people know him for. Or maybe you have heard of him, but not from Star Trek, but from another movie or TV show, for he has acted in quite a few. But to most of society (who knew of him), he will always be associated with the logical Mr. Spock. I want to know what people thought about him, and how they wish to honor him and stuff like that. I don't know, maybe a tribute video, maybe watching some of the best Leonard Nimoy moments, or maybe you don't care at all that he died. Again, I don't know. As for me however, I spent the rest of the day after I found out watching the best episodes of Star Trek (the original series, not Next Generation, although he does make some appearances in that series, too.). It's also kimd of scary, because now Shatner is the last of the Big Three in the show to survive, what with Nimoy now being dead, and Kelly dying in 1999 from stomach cancer.
  21. So a couple of weeks ago I found out that another kick starter-funded Star Trek fan movie was in the works. They released a 20 minute prelude in the form of a History Channel-style documentary just a couple days ago. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1W1_8IV8uhA I have to say I'm pretty impressed. It looks like there's a lot of effort being put into it, they've got academy award winning actors involved, they're actually using something from Star Trek lore and it looks and feels like something from Star Trek movie. So far, I have to say it's looking a lot more promising than Robert Orci's Star Trek III (sequel for Into Darkness) and the Star Trek Renegades TV Movie pilot. I'm really looking forward to it. You're thoughts?
  22. Alright guys so it's been 9 years since Star Trek Enterprise's cancellation and we might see Star Trek return to television pretty soon! The J.J. Abrams movies, while they are fun and entertaining action movies aren't very Star Trek movies and really aren't enough for us. But hey we MIGHT be in luck! A crowd-sourced TV movie directed by Tim Russ (who played Tuvok from Voyager) called Star Trek Renegades is being submitted as a pilot for a new Star Trek TV series. So how does it look?...Well... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xhZPbX2x3Ug https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WgRJWBB12GA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qyOBA8XWA5E I'm going to be honest here I can't say I'm really looking forward to this, in fact this is kind of making me nervous. 1. They're making Star Trek Dark and Gritty. Okay I heard Deep Space 9 was darker than the other Star Trek shows but not to this extent. From what I heard that series was focused on world building and character development and this...this looks like a typical Nolan movie and it doesn't really scream "Star Trek" (I've been seeing a lot of comparisons to Battlestar Galactica 2005). Isn't this kind of missing the point of Star Trek, to see a better and brighter future for humanity? 2. The Captain being a descendant of Kahn. Okay this looks like it's messing with canon, when exactly did Kahn have a kid? Also if Kahn did have a kid wouldn't that have kept him sane? Wouldn't he have had that child close to him at all times? Wouldn't have that prevented the events of Wrath of Kahn? Also if I saw that right she's also a Federation genetic experiment. Isn't that a Federation taboo? I'm willing to give it a shot but to me it's not looking good. Your thoughts?
  23. Did this for my 2d design class. Basically, we had to make a picture out of half inch blocks and have a pattern in each of them. His eyes are wonky and his nose is too high, but I think it turned out pretty good. File is big so I added a spoiler Might be hard to see from the photo, but I hid the mane 6's cutie marks in there. I had to go over Fluttershy's to make the tile darker, so hers might not actually be visible. Edit: Failed at making spoilers
  24. I figure there has got to be more of us on this forum. Seriously- where my Trekkiebros at? I actually discovered My Little Pony through a friend on a Star Trek The Next Generation forum. This was even before Discord made an appearance. My friend kept insisting 'you gotta check this new show out, it's awesome!'. It was season 1 episode 5 that I decided to check out MLP, and I was hooked. Then my fellow Trekkie and I flipped shit when we found out John de Lancie was Discord (Why Q, what a large snaggle tooth and big beard you have). I'm into old school trek and next generation (Spock and Data- FTW!) and wanted to know if anyone else on here is also a big Trek fan too. Also, one more thing. I had a thought last night- the mane cast of your favorite Trek (TOS,TNG,DS9, etc), what would their elements of harmony be? Heres mine for Next Gen.- Honesty-Troi Kindness- Data Laughter- Riker Generosity- Beverly Loyalty- Worf Magic-Picard
