  1. Artwork by the very talented Justasuta Introductions: Do you think my English teacher will let me use pony character analysis as a replacement for Shakespeare? Hello, folks. My name is NavelColt, also known by my old monicker, CD, C.Discord or ~Chaotic Discord~ if you're an OG boy from 13'. I am a fanfiction writer and lore analyst who's been in this glorious fandom since the near beginning, and I am here today to bring you my first proper, lengthy lore analysis since sometime in 2015. That analysis is for the changelings - specifically, the modern changelings. The fairy bugs, the rainbow buggos, the pastel beetles and their beetlemoose overlord. The changelings have been my focus of interest since season 6, when I was catapulted back into this fandom after my initial leave in late 2015. It started with Thorax's debut, a character who quickly rose to become my favorite character in the show, even dethroning Discord, himself. Since that time I have documented nearly 120,000 words in fan fiction, exploring the changelings, their lore, their day to day lives and Thorax's role as the changeling's new patriarch. What began as a few headcanon ideas has since expanded to an entire headcanon universe surrounding the modern hive. With the show now over, and no new canon content to be introduced, I felt it was time to sit down and actually put those ideas down on electronic paper. So please enjoy my headcanon universe for the modern changelings! If you find yourself intrigued, links to specific works will be found near the end. But first...a few points. Important Pointers: The MLP Comics are fantastic. However, I do not now nor have I ever considered the comics to be on the same plane of canon as the show, so everything here is crafted exclusively from the FIM cartoon. As a writer, reader and consumer of creative content in general I am someone who enjoys Slice of Life, closeness, feel-good stories and stories that focus on relationships between characters. If you're looking for a heart attacks and humor, you've come to the right place. If you're looking for adventure and excitement, she's in another castle. At the end of the day, these are just my interpretations. Feel free to see things differently! -- Key: Red Titles - Headcanon built off of pre-established canon Blue Titles - Pure headcanon, crafted in the spirit of the show's canon -- Backstory Tie-Ins: Thorax, a Source of Inspiration: "Evil? Oh, no, not me. All I've ever wanted was a friend." ~ Thorax, 'The Times They are a Changeling' Artwork by Cloureed From the moment 'The Times They are a Changeling' aired I knew Thorax was one of my newfound favorites. Thorax is the softest, most caring male character in this entire show. Not only is that a glorious stab in the face to gender stereotype norms, not only is it a perfect antithesis to Chrysalis - possibly the most ruthless villain to come out of this show - it is also part of what makes Thorax so enjoyable as a character. He seeks nothing but to help and protect those precious things around him, while he, himself is a precious thing in need of protecting. Thorax is like a modern, male spin on the trope Fluttershy's character was initially based on. This loving, caring changeling was then made the newly-crowned king of his species - a species scarred by a long, harsh rule under Chrysalis. A species he had never truly felt a part of, but could now nurture and care for. A home where he had never felt welcome could now be freely crafted into something that all changelings could enjoy. It was a redemption on a kingdom-sized scale, and it was a beautiful story waiting to happen. The King of Love Bugs was my very first changeling story. It ventured to show the ongoing, day-to-day process of the changelings rebuilding their hive, and working with Equestria's princesses to become a citizenship of Equestria. The story had one goal - to stay as canonical as possible, while building lore around the changeling's daily lives, newfound forms and magic. Most of all, it ventured to show the budding relationship between Thorax and his estranged kin. From Ruthless Queen to Paternal Patriarch: "Lately you and the other nymphs have made me feel more like a dad than a king. But, you know, I don't think they have to be so different." ~ Thorax, The King of Love Bugs, 'The Summit of Love' Artwork commissioned by me, and done by the very lovely Circus-Cinnamon Perhaps the most endearing concept surrounding Thorax becoming king is that he could now act as both a leader and father figure to the changelings, both the young and mature. What else would you expect from a cinnamon roll put in charge? Thorax had always wanted friends - presumably in the hive, at first, before he'd been pushed away by the state of Chrysalis's rule. Having the chance to not only make friends with other changelings for the first time, but to help other changelings make friends, themselves would be something he'd adore doing. The changelings denounced Chrysalis after discovering a better way to sustain themselves. They followed Thorax because they were ready to finally put themselves first, to become more than an extension of Chrysalis's will. This idea of sharing love, making connections with each other and sustaining themselves without the need to prey on others had become enticing, and Thorax was the greatest expert on the subject among their entire species. This is the basis for the relationship Thorax and his subjects would build. For adult drones Thorax became a voice of reason, a gentle, guiding hand and a willing friend. To the nymphs of the hive he became a playmate, a big, exciting jungle gym, and an attentive caretaker. The traits about Thorax once seen as weak in the old hive would now become advantageous in helping the hive grow, and helping the changelings adapt to a more peaceful lifestyle. * In 'To Change a Changeling', Thorax did just this by introducing a creative renaissance to the hive. Changelings were able to think for themselves, and discover hobbies and interests they'd likely never explored, before. He also introduced a space for changelings to communicate freely about their troubles. Though comedic on the surface, this approach speaks volumes to the kind of culture shock the changelings were working through, as they adapted to feeling and sharing emotions rather than feeding on them. Wholesome buggos, 'To Change a Changeling', S8 * Thorax's caring nature with his subjects can be seen in plethora via Ocellus - a nymph of no obvious relation to him, but whom Thorax has shown parent-like affection for on more than one occasion. Ocellus & Thorax, 'School Daze', S8 Ocellus & Thorax, 'Uprooted', S9 From Swarm to Pack - the Modern Hive Social Structure: "Why are you still here?" "Because I'm having trouble leading my pack, so I don't really wanna go home." ~ Ember & Thorax, 'Triple Threat' During Chrysalis's reign the hive operated autonomously as a singular unit, a hive mind. Individual drones did not have distinguishable features, and in nearly every appearance, changelings were presented in groups, moving and attacking as one. Very few times did we get to see changelings acting as individuals, other than Thorax. During this time, the changelings were referred to as a 'swarm' by Chrysalis and other characters. But following Thorax's ascension to the throne, things changed. Changelings were encouraged to pursue individuality. They were given the opportunity to explore unique interests and enjoy things that did not directly benefit the hive or its leader. Through Ocellus, we were shown that, like ponies and other species, changelings do in fact have unique parents, rather than being spawned in mass by a singular queen. Following this logic, it was safe to assume that the hive was a large community made up of smaller groups of families, all lead by a king/queen. The hive mind mentality and community structure of insects died with Chrysalis's status as queen. With Thorax's rise to power the hive took on a social structure more similar to pack animals. A tight-knit community that lives together, and whose members look out for each other, but is ultimately made up of smaller groups of families. The changelings had evolved socially just as much as they had physically. * The topic of whether Chrysalis is every changeling's mother is, and might always be up for interpretation. My stance is that the introduction of Ocellus's parents is proof that this concept is false. Changelings always had unique parents. Chrysalis forcefully collected all eggs birthed within the hive and had them raised together as a group of uniform warriors. In Chrysalis's hive, who you were born to or with was less important than the hive's strength. * Ocellus's parents were introduced in 'The Hearth's Warming Club', but were not titled as such until their appearance in 'A Horse Shoe-In'. Sharing Love - Modern Changeling Magic: "If my kind learned to create love for one another, maybe they wouldn't have to take it from others!" ~ Thorax, 'The Times They are a Changeling' Artwork commissioned by me, and done by the talented Underpable "After we transformed, we discovered something else," Thorax continued, looking around as the last of the group settled. With a glowing smile he rested his hoof on the head of a young changeling that had decided to curl up in front of his chest. "While long-term relationships sustain us from hunger, physical acts of affection and resting together rejuvenates our bodies from fatigue in the present." ~ 'An Elegant Discussion', The King of Love Bugs Love has evolved to be more than a food source for changelings. Like the Crystal Ponies, it has become an integral part of changeling culture, taking on a form of magic all its own. When a changeling is loved, be it through friendship, family or romance, they are eternally sustained from hunger. Though this process can occur with any sentient creature, when two (or more) changelings are each other's recipients, it creates an infinite circuit, a symbiotic relationship. Furthermore, when two or more changelings express love through affection, even simple gestures such as napping together or embracing each other, the bodies of all changelings involved are rapidly absolved of fatigue, physical pain and even minor injuries. The effectiveness of shared love magic is determined by three factors: time spent performing a loving gesture, proximity to loved ones, and the depth to which that changeling is loved. The exception to this rule is the hive's leader, Thorax, whose range of provided love magic is far wider than the average changeling. By merely being near his subjects, Thorax is able to restore their energy, regardless what he is doing. However, this process is still sped up through acts of affection and mutual rest. It is for this reason that Thorax created 'cluster naps', the concept of changelings sleeping in groups, rather than alone in individual bedhives. Perhaps the first major example of physical pack animal behavior in the new hive. Sharing Love in the Modern Hive, Reception and Adaptation: "Some changelings like the idea of communal energy restoration, while others think it's frivolous and degrading." "And others use it as an excuse to be lazy?" Twilight asked slyly. "Yeah, there are lazy changelings who try to use it as an excuse to sleep all the time," Thorax chuckled, rounding a bend in the corridor. "There are also changelings who get jealous when their friends share love with other changelings they don't know. And though I'm doing my best to curb it, there's still some bullying going on towards those changelings who enjoy communal resting. Trust me, if I'm not the one instigating it, even resting together can turn into a real mess." ~'Mornings are Never Easy, Twilight Sparkle', The King of Love Bugs Though Thorax was able to eventually convince the entire hive to accept the idea of sharing love, taking it a step further by physically spending more time together was a mixed response. During the hive's rebuilding, a massive internal chamber was built in the lower part of the hive, the part below ground. Thorax dubbed this 'the Nesting Chamber', and it would become not only the location where hive-wide cluster naps took place each night, but also a panic room of sorts, a secure place for the hive to commune in case of a large-scale threat. Thorax began to sleep here every night, along with every changeling in the hive who enjoyed the additional benefits of cluster naps. Those changelings against the concept of cluster naps remained in their individual bedhives, hollowed out holes along walls throughout the hive. Over time, as changelings grew more accustomed to spending time together, and growing as social creatures, cluster naps became more widespread. The nesting chamber is now a nightly routine for more than 80% of the hive, something Thorax couldn't be more ecstatic about. The Mental Effects of Metamorphosis & Pharynx's Relationship with Thorax: Flashes of past attempts to embrace his brother rapidly filled Thorax's head - the nightmares, fear and loneliness from his nymphhood, all met with a cold apathy. But as Thorax shed a tear down his brother's carapace, he could already feel the difference. No hoof pushed him away, and no disgusted tone reprimanded him. Without a word Pharynx had made him feel welcome - he was comfortable, and felt safe. The chamber, once ringing with a joyous laughter now echoed with an isolated sob. "P-Pharynx, I-I don't know what's changed with you but I'm, I'm so thankful for it," Thorax expressed, a tremble in his voice. ~ From Your Brother, with Love Artwork by my amazing friend and fellow bugbro fan, Rossmaniteanzu When a changeling undergoes metamorphosis, the very magic that allows them to consume and gain energy from love alters. It becomes a transmitter and receiver. The 'reformed' changeling is able to freely transfer love energy without conscious thought, and gains the ability to physically recover from concentrated doses of it. This is not, however, all there is to metamorphosis. By transforming and changing the very way their bodies handle love and other emotions, many changelings experience a moment of clarity upon transforming. The easiest way to describe this clarity is like stepping out of a several year long depression, and suddenly having levels of focus and patience you never thought were possible. It is a subtle, yet powerful effect. The greatest example of the phenomenon is with Pharynx. Prior to reformation, Thorax and Pharynx had a completely detached relationship. The bare extent to which Pharynx interacted with his brother was protecting him from bullies, or lightly bullying him, himself. Not long after Pharynx's metamorphosis, Thorax quickly found himself regularly interacting with an older brother that had, historically never given him the time of day. Though retaining his attitude, grumpiness and sarcasm, Pharynx's once ice cold demeanor has since thawed. The hive's guards can actually carry a half-way pleasant conversation with their captain now, and Thorax gets to revel in the joys of having a more attentive, albeit occasionally irritating big brother. * This clarity played a part in the alteration of the changeling's demeanors, going from ruthless hunters to artists, dancers and theatre performers seemingly overnight. It gave the changelings a clearer presence of mind to think about themselves, and what they wanted in life as individuals, rather than the wants and needs of warriors as part of a greater swarm. Love and Strength, Balance in the Modern Hive: "Thorax is way too touchy feely for the stricter aspects of ruling a hive," Pharynx went on. "He oversees the hive's social aspects, he resolves internal problems, and he helps look after the hive's young." ... "What Thorax lacks in toughness I make up for ten-fold. Since I...'evolved' or whatever, I've taken on all roles relating to hive defense, including training new recruits, overseeing patrol routes and maintaining the hive's grounds. But yeah, I'll also help Thorax with political tripe when he needs it, even if it's just talking him out of a panic attack every time he gets invited to a political event." ~ Pharynx, Mine is Dorkier Than Yours Another stellar artwork by Rossmaniteanzu Thorax's character was designed to be the antithesis of Chrysalis in every possible way. Where Chrysalis is self-absorbed, arrogant and manipulative, Thorax is kind, unassuming and naive in an innocent, almost childlike way. At a glance, Thorax is a far more desirable leader than Chrysalis, but his style of ruling is not without its problems. These problems came into play in, 'To Change a Changeling'. If Chrysalis is the far right then Thorax is the far left. The hive went from a group of alert, hardened warriors to utter pacifists who fell out of practice and couldn't even defend themselves. This is the basis for Pharynx's character. Just as Celestia and Luna each govern one of two important celestial bodies, together completing the night/day cycle, Pharynx completes Thorax by combining his loving nature and social wisdom with discipline, strength and pride in one's own strength. Pharynx reintroduced to the hive the only things Chrysalis had going for her entire rule, and those are security and strength. Alone, Thorax is no more efficient a ruler than Chrysalis, but together, Thorax and Pharynx are a better leadership than Chrysalis could ever be. Terminology & Fanfiction Entries: -- Conclusions: If you've made it this far, you've either skimmed and earned a hard , or you've worked your way through several years of one fan's organic interpretation of some truly adorable MLP characters. Either way, I thank you for taking an interest in this topic. Whether you've read my works or not, please feel free to provide some feedback, thoughts or your own ideas on changelings, their lore, etc. Whatever your response, here's to hoping I've had an impact on how you see the modern changelings.
  2. So I'd like a little help with Chima here and the head canons surrounding her, just to make sure I tied up any loose ends you know? Specific questions at the bottom of the post. My current favorite is my ponysona/self insert to my version of the canon. Think copying a google doc and adding your own stuff to it. She's more of a fun exercise with my creative abilities and pushing the limits of the lore we're given then anything else. Name: Chima Species: Changeling (Heir) Gender: Female Age: A thousand moons give or take (as an egg)/ barely a year Cuite Mark: Seed of Harmony Some of the species and their effects on her: (these are found when she meets the Young 6 who work these out by appearance alone. It can be assumed there are traits from other creatures, but these are the most notable) Dragon: The horns on her wings and by her ears as well as her stomach plating and tail. She also has the two small horns by her main one and the dragon magic in them makes her spells natural firey. She is immune to fire in the sense that it will not burn her. That said she still feels discomfort (sweating, dizziness, etc.) and famable parts of her will catch on fire, it just tends to go out quickly and won't burn anything away. Griffon: Her front legs are normal horse legs until you get to her plaws. They're like normal cat paws, if the dew claw was a talon. She can pick things up, but any thing requiring fine motor skills is a no go. Her wings are also longer and sharper like a griffon's. Hippogriff: All those long feathers on her wings, back legs, sides of her face and tail. She has difficultly flying because of them, and she mostly just uses her wings to glide and as a boost. Kirin: Kirin horn, tail hair and ears (with feathers at the tips). She can transform into a Nirik and when she does her feathers take on a more blue tone and her hair/fur takes on a more pink one. Pony: Her horn is curved back and thin like an oriental pony (Mistmane's people) and her mane is like a normal pony's. She also has crystal pony traits only show when she is in in the Crystal Empire. When in the borders of the empire she assumes a crystal from no matter what she shifts into Changeling: Despite her looks and abilities, she is a changeling, and has all the abilities of one. She can shape-shift, and feeds on love. She has a thin frame like most changelings, but her feathers and fur make her seem bulkier. Her irises and pupils are typical to a changeling, but much like with Chrysalis, they don't take up the whole eye. Nonspecific Traits: (the young 6 weren't sure where they came from) Her coat: When the young 6 find her they at first conclude she doesn't have any yak traits but Yona objects. She mentions that while Chima's coat is short like a pony's, it's much softer and thicker than all of their's except hers. Cloud Walking: They do quick tests to try and find some less obvious traits and find that she can walk on clouds. Not really a surprise given that most winged creatures are shown being able to do this, they just aren't sure which creature it's from. Personality/FunFacts: -She's shy at first but very eager to learn about everything she can. When shes meets new ponies she's very nervous about the impression she makes but is happy and carefree around the Young 6. -She fears becoming like Chrysalis and doesn't forgive what she did but she still feels love for her mother. She considers both the Spirit and Chrysalis to be her mothers. -Quite clumsy and very apologetic about it. Her tail and wings knock over a lot and when they do she'll curl up into a little ball and hide. -She loves to swim but is very slow and has to set her self on fire to dry in a timely manner. -Because of her thick coat and feathers she prefers the cold even if she can withstand high heat. -Her writing is attrocious. She can't quite get the hang of mouth writing and her tendency to set anything she uses magic on alight makes levitation a no go. She usually just uses her plaws as best she can. ------ So it all starts with my head canon on how changelings survive off love. Basically if friendship is magic, and love is a big part of friendship then love magic must be a thing. I'd say this is supported by a lot of episodes with the changelings in which love does actually manifest magic or make it stronger. So love is an actual type of magic and changelings siphon it from creatures they trick to take back to Queen Chrysalis, who then divides it between the rest of the hive. Because they are giving another creature's love, this doesn't count towards reform. I also think that this is how they maintain their ability to shape-shift. All creatures presumably have a slightly different kind of magic, like a magical fingerprint, and if this is in the love magic it's not unreasonable to say that this diverse range of magic allows changelings to mimic other creatures forms. In a sense, if that creature can love, then changelings can and probably have stolen that love at some point. So what if the exposure to this in their eggs is what gives them that power? What if direct love from another creature, and not the love filtered through grown changelings, could permanently affect the physical form of one still in the egg? When the changelings were first brought into the world I like to believe they weren't intentionally malicious. I assumed that they merely realized they needed love to survive and so giving love was too much of a risk. They wouldn't know right away that love wasn't a finite resource or that they could create it themselves, so their selfish nature came out of fear more than anything else. I mean Chrysalis has stated openly on more than one occasion that it is her duty to protect and feed the hive and that's why she's after Equestria. She snapped when they were all reformed but up to that point it was all about the benefit of her subjects. So I think that way back when, a Chrysalis who loved her people, even if she never gave that love out (If she gave all her love she could run out and starve, then who would protect them?), decided she needed an heir. Someone with her power she could raise to help protect her people or even help lead infiltration on a larger scale. We see how the old changelings are clearly incompetent on their own and the Canterlot invasion required her to leave the hive vulnerable to attack. She selected one of the normal eggs and began to feed it personally. She gave it larger portions of both love and normal magic even going so far as to cast spells onto it. There were probably changelings specifically charged with distributing love among the hatch-lings so they would grow, and this transfer of love from changeling to Chrysalis to changeling to egg (or maybe even more steps) might have helped filter out some of the species specific magic and prevent changelings from taking on traits in their actual form. Now while receiving the less filtered magic did have some effect on Chima I'm not saying that was the source of such extreme differences. That comes from Chrysalis's screw up. So, much in the ways that bees feed a different kind of honey to larvae that will become a new queen, Chrysalis was giving a different kind of magic to Chima, who she had named Sarynxis. Along with just straight up power magic and stolen love magic, she was also receiving the smallest bits of love magic unbeknownst to Chrysalis. Again, I don't believe she is expressly evil at this point, just incredibly focused on the protection of her people at any cost. If she had remained in the Changeling Hive I head canon that the metamorphosis would have happened before any major pony-changeling conflict. What happened instead was that Chrysalis began pouring way too much magic and the little barely formed changeling inside couldn't contain it letting the excess leak out wildly. I mean if a young unicorn can't control their magic how would a Egg? This manifested mainly in the egg repeatedly teleporting itself and other changelings, a fact that Chrysalis disregarded as harmless. Only one changeling, the one tasked with overseeing all of the egg care and a special talent for connecting to the eggs themselves spoke up. She warned the queen that the heir couldn't contain the magic and that she should focus on giving her enough love to hatch, but by this point it was too late. Even though Chrysalis listened and stopped casting spells not all the magic had leaked out. It was at this time that Changelings began coming in with more love than ever before. They had found Equestria and the abundance of love that came with it. Unfortunately for the heir, this love magic came with far more power magic attached that only served to push the Egg's capacity closer to the limit. The straw to break the camel's back was when one particular changeling had managed to trick Celestia into believing she was dreaming about her sister returning. The amount of love he gained was immense and upon his return Chrysalis fed it all to Chima, hoping this would be enough to hatch her. It didn't but the residual magic was enough to spark a burst so powerful that the Egg was teleported far from the Changeling hive, leaving no trace. Chrysalis couldn't sense her, The hatching managers couldn't sense her, not even the one who warned Chrysalis could sense her, and every party sent to find her failed. Chrysalis was furious and in that rage blamed every creature in sight, herself (even if she would never admit to it), the Changeling who brought the magic (he was banished) the hatching managers (all banished save for the one who warned her, she kept her in case she was able to sense the egg again) and most of all, Equestria. Her desire for revenge crossed with the clear gold mine of love that Equestria was lead her to launch her first attack on the kingdom, and then normal chronology follows. As for Chima, the burst of magic was enough to teleport her from land to land not just once but multiple times. Her egg was strange and unnerving, but in each place there was some creature that decided to pull her out of the cold and see what happened. These acts of love weren't enough to help her hatch, as an heir needed far more love than a normal changeling, but it did have a unique effect. As Chima was still in her earliest developmental stage, the direct, willingly shared love from the many different species heavily affected her form. This is where we see the mashup of traits. Her time on Mt. Aris gave her the longer feathers, her time with the Kirin gave her her Nirik form and horn, the time in the Dragonlands permanently changed how her magic works and so on and so forth. She still maintains her ability to shapeshift as a changeling and her increased power as an Heir but the thousand or so moons spent receiving direct love from so many species overwhelms the few she spent in the Hive. Somewhere along the line she pops into Ponyville, with the magic is running out and her getting closer to hatching. Deep in the Everfree forest, the spirit of Harmony notices this and uses it's power to direct her next teleportation to the tree. The spirit sees her need for care along with her potential destiny but also realizes the likely hood that she will not be protected should the ponies find her, given all the Chrysalis has done, and resolves to hatch her itself. Through this she forms a connection to the tree, seeing it's true from (head canon related to a species I made, not really relevant here) and learning how to understand ponish. As she is still in her egg, she's too young to learn anything complex so the Spirit mostly just communicates feelings of love and care to her. She hatches and remains by the tree's side. (I mean no one ever, and I mean EVER looks behind that thing). As an Heir the length of her life stages are another thing that varies greatly from changeling drones, with heirs spending more time as eggs and advancing to the age of the CMC/Young 6 within a matter of days. Avoiding spoilers she is eventually found by the Young 6, and Ocellus is the only one able to communicate with her. This is another head canon of mine; that changelings are born able to speak a language of hisses and such but must be taught ponish. Chima can understand and think in ponish, but cannot speak it, at least not at first. The Young 6 are told by the tree to only introduce her to the princesses and other ponies if they really believe she will be safe and so they agree to keep her in the forest until they think out a plan. She got her cutie-mark when the tree did the thing (the first one) and represents her destiny; to join the young 6 and truly unite the many species and kingdoms of Equestria, she is essentially a walking seed of harmony that will grow off the magic of the elements that manifests through the Young 6 to become what the tree was. In my personal universe she catalyses Chrysalis's reform but that requires a lot of S9 spoilers and is still very work in progress ------ So here's what I need help with; -Are there any lore points I'm directly contradicting? Especially with my head canons because those are integral to making her work. -Are there any things I'm missing? Like is there something that my head canons fails to explain or gaps it fails to fill? -Any ideas for her character? Other species that could come through in her personality or actions? Ponies she would get along with or dislike/fear? -Where should I post her, if anywhere? I understand that it's highly unlikely anyone will allow her in a role play regardless of how much I insist she won't be a power play, but does that mean I can't submit her to the Character sheets?
  3. EDIT 11/2/18: With the MLP holiday special "Best Gift Ever" presenting reindeer as canon species this fan club has now been expanded to include them. As it stands both the deer as presented in the IDW comic arc "Root of the Problem" and the magic reindeer from "Best Gift Ever" fit here; not to mention Velvet from "Them's Fightin' Herds." :p All right, thanks to issues #27 and #28 we now have deer a part of the lore in "Friendship is Magic." Granted we probably won't be seeing them in the show, but their in the lore now. <3 So yeah, we have King Aspen, his son Bramble, and Blackthorn, and the deer live in Thicket. I just LOVE their design!
  4. At 1:01 while Celestia talks about "magical items created for evil" they show several things we've seen throughout the show, and would expect to see...except for two of those things. One the bones of the Arimaspi (big goat thingy that attacked the griffons, and stole their treasure), and the other was Daybreaker's crown-helmet thingy! Soooo yea - mind kinda blown here, cause this implies one, that the Arimaspi may ether have been an artifact used by someone to attack the griffons for said treasure or at least it's bones could be (or have already been) made into an evil artifact and two, that Daybreaker's crownhelm is such an artifact which could mean either she may be in the show for real or she was already real at one point! I know this is just speculation but, what do you guys think? Video linked below, remember: pause at 1:01!
  5. So I have been thinking this over some. Ponies and their naming policy. By far they seem arbitrary in the generation but since logic can be inserted into them I have done just that. First inspection to pony names seems rather shallow and whimsical, but then after dissecting the names and some open speculation I've gathered a few pony name rules. Let's start fro the first ball of yarn: Apple family. What we have here,is a family that has been introduced to us in a relatively thorough manner and from our given knowledge Apple is the family name and any conjuncture to Apple is the actual name of the individual. This however presents us few problems, sure names like Bloom and Pie and Caramel are easy to understand as female names, but with names like Jack, from Applejack is not too feminine and AJ therefore was named with a masculine name or her name is actually shortened from something like Jacqueline or other Jackish name. And the fact that Caramel Apple as well as Apple Fritter are both names that are not combined up to a single name like Applejack means that Applejack likely is not Applejacks proper name but a nickname. Also the placement of pony last name seems generally random in the case of apple family and names are then paired in a manner that sounds good vocally rather than by order of first name -> last name or the reverse. Also then there are cases like Big Macintosh and Granny Smith who both are of course breeds of apple but are not named with a family name indicating several possibilities. In case of Big Mac we have obviously a case of name where family name is omitted for convenience, his real name likely is Apple Macintosh and he just got named "Big" due his most outstanding feature of size. Then the case of Granny Smith. Another case of masculine name or last name that differs from family name. With her we have the generation excuse at play. It could be that Granny smith marries to family of Smiths and her daughter then married to family of Apple, Making Granny AJ's maternal grandparent. And her maiden-name was likely something else. Her cutiemark suggests that she might be even related to Pie family. Then let's move on to the Family of Pie since we have a little bridge here to cross. Pie family Pie family, Granny Pie as well as Pinkamina Diane Pie share a last name, and Mrs Cake likely was named Pie before marrying Mr. Cake, making her Pinkies possible aunt. Bellamina Marie Pie, Pinkies dark grayish lavender sister also can be assumed to share Pinkies style of name. Her parents names we do not know but what we do know is that Pinkie Pie does share a similar strict naming we can assign to Twilight Sparkle. Sparkle Family Sparkles are unicorns, and likely then follow a more strict name policy in general. Sparkle family seems small and it can be that Unicorns due extremely long lifespan are allowed to have a limited number of offspring to prevent population growth, making generally unicorn family names a little less commonplace. Rarity's last name we don't know but I assume it to be same as Sweetie Belle's: Belle But since this is all speculation I will leave it at that. But Rarity Belle has a nice ring to it. Dash Rainbow Dash's family name likely is Dash, Until there's more Dash Background I dare not venture there either. And then the more complex cases like Fluttershy and Scootaloo pose questions whether these are combination names like Applejack or their last names just are not revealed.
  6. So I am crafting the second season of Equestrian City on paper..and I ran into a problem. I'd like to ask the collective. Why do the changlings keep their prisoners in good or for that matter at all. The entire situation would be easier if they just killed them. Now naturally we can't show that but still, there has to be a reason they keep em around. Any shape-shifting worth a darn will tell you kill your target. So what possible reason would they need to keep them around. Obviously they couldn't feed off the love of prisoners... I turn to you, pony collective..
  7. Okay, so in the first changeling episode, we hear that Cadence is Celestia's niece, and in the Galla episode we here that Blueblood is her nephew, They can't be Luna's children, because she would have been on the moon at the time of their conception, so is there a sibling of the royal sisters we don't know about?
  8. Anyways, do you want the movie to focus on explaining pre-existing unexplained lore in the show's universe (like alicorns, the tree of harmony or starswirl the bearded, discord's backstory, or something else) or would you rather the plot focus on completely new never before mentioned elements? Like how the sirens in RR were never mentioned before in show would be an example of having a movie focus on new lore, while the tree of harmony in Princess twilight sparkle would be an example of exploring pre-existing canon. Which would you prefer for the movie?
  9. What would you do if you had to fight against discord 1 on 1? Ideal if it is lore friendly. But who cares.
  10. OKAY guys now this is probably not your everyday thread but hear me out (sorry for my english skills, im german): did you ever have an MLP-lesson-like realization? like the ones Twilght has at the end of most episodes (the onese she sends letters about)? I CERTANLY did have one yesterday and i wonmdered if anny of you have come to some interresting and meaningfull conclusions since you joined the fandom. i would like to learn from your experiences and realizations and i am sure there will be some interresting poste below. so i will start off by posting my realization. so yesterday i was discussing religion and science with a freind of mine. and he had just finished his sentence qand i was eager to prove my point untill i suddenly stopped because i just realized that what i was about to say would hurt him emotionally. after that thought it came to me: If you need to hurt someone to prove your point, your point is not worth proving. so after realizing this i went a different way (and in that argument and the argument ended more civilized than most do on the internet ^^) im really looking forward to your "Dear princess celestia..." moments ^^ (also please don't just quote something you have read online i would really apprecieate actural, genuine and honest experiences =D )
  11. I will give the facts we know. • They ALL took place at least 1000 years ago. Sombra happened exactly 1000 years ago, as that was the time that the Crystal Empire was gone. This is also true for Nightmare Moon, as she was in the moon 1000 years. Discord however, has no definite time. • The elements were first used on Discord, then Sombra, then Nightmare Moon. We know the elements were used for the very first time on Discord. It is unconfirmed whether it was used on more ponies than Sombra before or after NMM. Now I will give Explanations that by the information I was given, can be derived as true. • Starswirl was alive during the reign of Discord. He banished the Sirens over 1000 years ago. So he was alive at in some time period between 1000 and 2000 years ago. He was alive at the end of the reign (this is canon). Which means Discords reign must also have ended at the very most, 2000 years ago. 1000<Discord <2000. • Sombra's Tyranny and Nightmare Moon's unsuccesful coup happened within years, perhaps months of each other. Nightmare moons return was in Season 1, and Sombra's Return was in season 3. Which means NMM happened before Sombra... Wait! That cant be right, because Luna was there to banish Sombra. We meet again Plot Holes, we meet again. So lets assume that i misheard Celestia when she said 1000 years ago (refering to Crysal Empire), and actually said over 1000 years ago. •So this is what we have gathered. 2000 years ago > Discord > Sombra > NMM > 1000 years ago. Any Information about Starswirl, the elements, or these events can help us derive some more precise numbers. These are very wide time frames. Does anyone know anything from the Extended Universe perhaps, or simply something I am missing that can whittle down these numbers?
  12. So like many new comers im working on my OC and as im going through the ideas in my head I keep whishing there is/ to make a (im probably not looking at the right place im open to that fact) some in deph lore of the mlp universe? If you know of with the shadowcast videos from youtube, something like that is what im thinking to help us new bronnys in the herd feel free to point the way if there is, its much welcome -brony on
  13. I just found out this pop-up book came out recently, and there's still no topic about it. I saw what it looks like in Equestria Daily, but I don't wanna show it here for spoilers, which has the appearance of the founders of Equestria among them (I didn't seen Commander Hurricane, but I'll be bugged if he's made a mare in it, despite being a stallion according to the Journal of the Two Sisters )
  14. After the defeat of the everlasting dragons, the Lords founded the kingdom of Lordran with Gwyn as its ruler, however, he did not become a global leader as Lordran is flanked by Catarina, Astora, Carim, the Fivefinger Delta, Thorolund, Zena, Balder, Berenike and the Great Swamp as well as an unnamed kingdom to the far East. Gwyn built the great city of Anor Londo, Nito retired to the catacombs and the Witch founded the underground city of Izalith at the base of an ancient archtree. Seath the Scaleless was rewarded for his treachery in the war with the dragons when Gwyn made him a Duke, gifted him a portion of his Lord Soul and gave him full reign of the great archives. The town of Oolacile was founded in the valley beneath the volcanic plug atop which stood the city of Anor Londo. This small town was known for it's ancient sorceries but was swallowed by the Dark when the inhabitants were tricked by a primordial serpent. The few survivors, led by four men, fled to the caves near the Valley of Drakes. Here, over many years, the survivors of Oolacile built a city in the caverns and named it New Londo. The men who led the evacuation and founded New Londo became its kings, sharing their rule. Gwyn was so impressed with these kings' bravery and initiative he granted each one a shard of his Lord soul, just as he did with Seath. But fate is not always kind and the Dark found the people of New Londo once more. The kings were corrupted and turned against Gwyn and so, to halt the spread of the Dark, Gwyn made the difficult decision to flood New Londo and doom the entire population. One would think that this would be the end of Lordran's troubles but this was not the case. The First Flame was beginning to dwindle and with it the humanity of the populace was slowly going out. People began to hollow, losing their sanity and becoming nothing but murderous husks. Gwyn ordered these undead to be corralled and led to the North, to the Undead Asylum in an attempt to stop the spread of what was presumed to be a disease. Nito and the Witch of Izalith were the first to realise that the undead were the result of the dwindling First Flame. These two collaborated in an attempt to create a second Flame but their attempt failed and the Witch of Izalith was transformed into the Bed of Chaos, unleashing chaos fire throughout Izalith. This chaos magic turned her sisters sisters into vile monsters and demons. Gwyn sent his silver knights to fight these demons but the few which survived returned in blackened armour. They developed anti-demon weapons and these black knight veterans became Gwyn's elite. The curse of the undead had begun to spread to other lands and the knights of Balder and Berenike had started to besiege Anor Londo, blaming Gwyn for their misfortune and demanding that he take action. Gwyn needed to do something and so he decided to do the only thing he could: he took his black knights to the Kiln of the First Flame and sacrificed himself, returning what was left of his Lord Soul to the Flame in order to grant the living a few more centuries of life with which to gather the Lord Souls and return them to the Flame. Gwyn knew this was nothing more than a stall but the Witch's Lord Soul was trapped in the Bed of Chaos at the heart of Izalith. Nito's Lord Soul was deep in the Tomb if Giants, trapped there by Pinwheel, and Gwyn's black knights never made it to the Gravelord and obtain his Soul. The shards of Gwyn's Lord Soul were laying at the bottom of the flooded New Londo ruins or in the possession of Seath the Scaleless who was now far too powerful for Gwyn to defeat as the Lord of Sunlight had allowed the treacherous dragon to act unopposed for too long. However, there was hope in an Astoran prophesy which claimed that the bearer of the Dark Soul, the direct descendant of the Pygmy, would be trapped within the Undead Asylum and that, if released, would become the Chosen Undead, gather the Lord Souls and rekindle the First Flame. Oscar of Astora bravely gave his life to free the Chosen Undead... ...and this is where the player's story begins. Hope you liked this entry, would you guys prefer me to explain the events which happen in the game itself or to focus each new entry on a character and give all of the lore surrounding them?
  15. In the Age of Ancients the world was unformed, shrouded by fog. A land of grey crags, archtrees and everlasting dragons. This world of the past was a barren, grey landscape devoid of all life...but also devoid of death. The stone-scaled dragons appeared to have no beginning and seemingly no end... And then there was Fire. And with Fire came Disparity. Heat and cold, life and death and, of course, light and dark. The light and dark are the First Flame and the Abyss respectively. Humans are born of the Dark, born of the Abyss and the Dark Soul which governs it but they are given full life through the First Flame. Their dark souls (which were born from the Dark Soul itself) must be enriched by the First Flame in order for them to gain humanity. Humanity, however, is a double edged sword as, while it does allow one to rationalise and to be alive in the truest sense of the word, it does allow one to die, something this world had never experienced before. So, from the Dark they came, and found the souls of Lords in the flame. There are three additional Lord Souls aside from the Dark Soul and these were the fuel for the fire. Humans are greedy and ambitious creatures and three humans removed these souls from the Flame in order to gain the power of gods. Nito, the first of the dead, the Witch of Izalith and her daughters of Chaos, Gwyn, the Lord of Sunlight, and his faithful knights. The Furtive Pygmy, however, was the most ambitious of all, seizing the Dark Soul for himself but remaining in the shadows. With the Strength of Lords, they challenged the dragons. Gwyn's mighty bolts peeled apart their stone scales, opening up the dragons to Nito's miasma of death and disease while the witches weaved great firestorms to burn the drangons' roosts in the archtrees. Seath the Scaleless betrayed his own, and the dragons were no more. Thus began the Age of Fire...
  16. Very soon I will be posting Dark Souls lore but right now it is 5am and I still have to go to bed. It's something I'm passionate about and so it seems like the perfect subject for my blog. If there's anything in particular you'd like me to cover, just post it here or PM me. Watch this space!
  17. Twilight makes a lot of references to pony history in the show, and since G1 is now canonically linked to G4 thanks to Tirek, I figured it would make drawing up a timeline of Equestrian and pre-Equestrian history a lot easier. This post is subject to change as new information is added, although some parts of it are based on my own theories and may not necessarily be canon (though hopefully it can still serve as a handy aide de memoire for fanfic writers). I'm also using Elder Scrolls chronology as a guide to keeping everything sorted, because it works so well. And so, without further ado, I present to you... The History Of Ponykind Mythic Age Celestia and Luna are born. How they get their cutie marks is not known. This is basically equine prehistory. Ponies evolve, learn to use tools and get civilization up and running. Tribal Age (0 TA - 3400 TA) Palaeopony Period (0 TA - 1050 TA) 1: Dream Valley is colonized by a mix of pegasi, unicorns and earth ponies. 57: The events of Rescue At Midnight Castle occur. This is the first contact between humans and ponies that is often pointed to by modern ponies arguing for the existence of humans. 83: The Smooze incident occurs. 371: The first documented case of the Cutie Pox is observed on an earth pony agricultural estate. 650: The Unicorn Empire is founded under the Allotropic Dynasty. Imperial mages are tasked with regulating the day-night cycle in the absence of alicorns. 801: Earth pony farming and manufacturing communities across Dream Valley are united into the Dirt Pact, which ensures collective civil defence and trade regulation. 811: Pegasus city-states are united into the Stratospheric Republic. Mesopony Period (1051 TA - 2100 TA) 1260: Starswirl the Bearded is born. 1348: Clover the Clever is born. 1367: Clover the Clever begins magical tutelage under Starswirl the Bearded. 1986: Starswirl the Bearded disappears. Neopony Period (2101 TA - 3400 TA) 3321: The events depicted in the Hearth's Warming Eve pageant begin. Windigo activity causes a dramatic climate shift in Dream Valley. 3325: Dirt Pact farming communities attempt to pool their resources as crops begin to fail. 3332: Earth pony manufacturing grinds to a halt right across Dirt Pact territories due to lack of materiel. Ponies everywhere face mass starvation. Commander Hurricane stages a military coup, seizing control of the Stratospheric Republic and instituting martial law. 3335: The Tribal Summit between Commander Hurricane, Princess Platinum and Chancellor Puddinghead ends in failure. 3336: The Pegasus capital of Cumulus Colossae is forcibly evacuated as temperatures plummet to lethal levels. Earth pony factory cities are abandoned as freezing, starving earth ponies begin the exodus from Dream Valley. Clover the Clever draws up a plan for Unicorn resettlement. 3340: The last group of ponies leaves for greener pastures. Dream Valley and its environs are now completely uninhabitable. 3341: New land is discovered, but tribal warfare causes the windigoes to follow from Dream Valley. Clover the Clever, Private Pansy and Smart Cookie unite the tribes and drive the windigoes back. 3342: Equestria is founded. 3350: Discord arrives from another plane of existence. 3355: Equestrian leadership collapses under the strain of fighting Discord's chaotic powers. Offers of surrender are ignored as the draconequus turns the world upside down. Countless ponies are enslaved and tortured under his dark reign. 3380: Celestia and Luna return to the world and plans to defeat Discord are put in motion. 3390: All attempts to defeat, destroy or even contain Discord end in failure. An expedition to the wild Everfree Forest is chartered in the hopes of finding a natural power source. 3398: After years of chasing legends, rumours and theories, Celestia and Luna discover the Tree of Harmony and extract the Elements of Harmony. 3399: After much preparation and an epic battle, the Elements of Harmony are used to seal Discord away in stone. 3400: Celestia and Luna accept the invitation of the former unicorn-earth pony-pegasus government leaders to rule as an absolute dual monarchy. The Everfree Forest is partly cleared and construction begins on both Everfree City and the Castle of The Pony Sisters. The beginning of the First Celestial Era is declared. Alicorn Age First Era, aka Pre-Classical Era 1E 36: First contact with The Crystal Empire. 1E 123: First contact with the Griffon Kingdoms. 1E 521: First contact with the United Zebrican Tribes. 1E 632: Starswirl the Bearded reappears from the mysterious rift that swallowed him in 1986 TA, applies himself rigorously to magical research and becomes one of the greatest sorcerers of the Pre-Classical Era. 1E 700: The Sea Ponies mysteriously disappear. 1E 1300: Explorers making a return pilgrimage to Dream Valley report dragon settlements and the transformation of the region into a wasteland. 1E 1316: Starswirl the Bearded dies. 18. In the rare case that this gets noticed by the worldbuilders of the changelings in Equestrian Empire i am willing to help, modify, and see what i can do in this. Changeling Diet Changelings are omnivorous but they require an increased source of minerals in order to fulfill their diet. Seeing as their scales grow and expand from birth they often crush rocks and pebbles with their muscular jaws and their pointy fangs. Seeing as they require such even during early stages of development (birth-gestation-egg) their homes are almost always located in such places and they are often seen sneaking near Rock Farms. They often pose as high bidders/investors taking part of the production with them and masking awfully well their identity and financial activities. Love-"Special Diet" Love is an allegory for life and how life is meaningless without love. Changelings feed upon the life-force of other creatures. This occurs because of a magical malady known as Lov-e-lipsis (Love+Elipsis aka Lack of Love, i will get to how they contracted it a bit later). A changeling running low on life-force starts losing sanity and is dangerously close to devolving into the Devourer state (More about that later). When a changeling is adequately fed the holes upon them and their growth will remain on low levels. A changeling fed on adequate life-force will experience a similar effect to that of a boost of adrenaline or drugs. Side effects of overfeeding upon love may include power-haze, clouded judgement, increased ambition and arrogance. Changeling stages of Life Birth A Changeling spends on an average 9 months until it is born and its' coming to the world of Equestria is a mix of gestation and egg-hatching. Changelings like every other living creature require a mother and a father in order to come to life. The changeling couple are overly protective of their young. The baby spends 3 months inside the mother's belly until it is born. Following quote of my fanfic... To a common pony these would look like alien abomination, semi-transparent eggs filled with slime, inside which there is a creature attached to a tube flowed willing to kill or drain you as soon as it came out. The truth is that in this state the changelings are at their weakest. That is why past the guards and their caretakers, there is usually at least one parent overlooking each egg. ... Alianna knows the justified pain she had experienced, and what she had been through before delivering her child. The baby cannot transform inside the womb. Attempting to transform to creatures of different size, weight or shape would, in most cases, kill her and the baby. The mother had to spend almost three months deprived of her most powerful weapon and escape tool: her transformations and she had to spend double to triple the time taking shifts with her husband into taking care of it. Because although all eggs would eventually grow a stronger exterior, their starting state is very fragile. ... There is a fleshy core at the bottom of the egg. It is round shaped with a darker core, and the changeling is connected with the umbilical cord to it. Among many of other changeling "eggs" he finds a suitable spot and starts digging, using his strong hooves. Gently and slowly he places the egg on the ground and pushes the dirt around it so it can stabilize. Some time after it touches the ground the core of the egg comes alive and "roots" start going into the soil. The "roots" will take water, micro minerals, trace elements and anything else the babies needed to build their scales and help them grow. From time to time the caretakers or the parents will inspect the integrity of the pod, and refresh the "love" energy to make sure the young do not die before birth. No changeling is born with holes, but it becomes less possible to keep it that way by each passing day. Changeling growth/genetics Alianna follows them as they keep talking about it. She knows that all changelings' lives are greatly effected by their unique "evolutions" . Being the caretaker of the newborn she is one of many changelings that were studying their species' genetics. There is one gene in particular that was rather "tricky", and still baffled many of generations who studied it. It was called "The Protean Gene" and it had three possible forms it could take. During a changeling's life it would adapt, change, depending on the situation a changeling was put in. Each position it took on the genetic code allowed the changeling to excel at different sectors: Strength, Dexterity, Magic. Added to that an unique characteristic was given to the changeling by it. Jonaleth's muscular structure was one, the reinforced scales of Mortain were another, her affinity with healing and there were countless others possibilities she could not even fathom. They had more in common with the ponies than they thought. They might not have been looking for "Cutie Marks" their whole lives, but they too had a part of their lives when they looked for their own path, their place in society, their special ability. Immersion and time spent with the ponies In order to gather love the young are separated until a point from their mothers and sent to replace young ponies. The changeling while living with the ponies gathers love while the changelings absorb back home the love of the pony. This way the young gather honest-hearted love. Then at the moment they are ready ((usually when they gain a cutie mark)) they are called back to the Changeling Kingdom where all the love is collected whilst the original goes back with all the memories of the changeling that was posing as itself. Some however don't return or have difficulty to do so. Some changelings get so absorbed in the experience that they become victims of a psychological phenomenon called immersion. Immersion is a real phenomenon that occurs when someone gets so captivated in an experience that they find it hard to detach themselves from it. As a result many changelings stay with the ponies continuing to believe that they are who they pretend to be. Ever heard of "Fake it till you make it?" or "When you wear a mask long enough, you become the mask?" That's pretty much what happens to them. Names Those that do succeed on returning get to pick their own name. For example... My changeling OC/Ponysona who was posing as Tidal Rider chose the name Ao. He chose it because of the many beginnings (A-Alpha) and endings (O-Omega) that his life had. General Changeling Abilities 1)Magic Sensitivity/Enhanced Vision Emotions are Magic... remember that for in our research it is going to be imperative. Emotions flow in the sky like energy. They are invisible in the naked eye and harvesting emotions is something that can bolster someone's magic immensely... if they know how to use it of course. Normally emotions can't be seen with the naked eye but changelings posses a special kind of skill that allows them to track magic found in ley lines. Great lines of power, known as ley lines, crisscross the lands. Ley lines exist all over Equestria, and are sources of deep and natural magic. Across the face of the world there flow lines of power - patterns of magical energy that carry vitality of the lands through them, like blood vessels in a creature. These lines of power are recognized subtly by skilled sorcerers yet changelings have a natural affinity in recognizing them. Most however, only really focus on those places where the lines converge and meet, seeking to tap the most power from them. Those who seek to understand and master runic power understand that the convergences are not the only important part of this power - the patterns formed by the lines themselves are important as well. There are lines of power that run across the land in a select few areas, but these are not the only lines - simply the most obvious. Inside of these thick and corded ropes of power, there are also tiny, web-thin lines that run between these great ley lines, connecting them in a vast net of pulsing, subtle power. Those with great magical power and ley walkers seek out these sites. A convergence of two or more lines of magical energy is called a "ley line nexus". I used and modified it a bit. Positive Emotions These emotions are bright and when a person is filled with them they shine like suns sharing the energy among them and the receiver of said emotions. Those emotions transfer themselves and amplify themselves when they are shared between more people. They have bright colors and give energy to others like the sun does. Negative emotions Negative emotions are like black holes. They are grey emotions and often colorless or dark in color and act like black holes dimmening the aura of those around you and drawing emotions from everyone surrounding you. Unlike positive emotions negative emotions draw energy from others to the one feeling those emotions but like positive emotions they inspire similar emotions to those around you. Lov-e-lipsis and changeling emotions Due to their race-specific hereditary malady the changelings image when viewing their emotions is like a mix of the above two... though their emotions may shine bright and positive there is always a small hole that sucks some of the emotions like a bottomless pit. The feeling itself of having your emotions drained from the inside can range to a mild inner butterfly to a tapeworm or appendicitis. The description of Hasbro about the changelings says they are grotesque ponies... but still PONIES. Certainly it's not mentioned they are evil... therefore confirming my belief that they do not willingly feed upon love... or by choice... though it does give them strength. Now i believe that sometime during their history the changelings came in contact with Anti-Life entities such as demonic entities or dark magic and devolved into what they are now. They became parasites of emotions... and developed an isolationist society to avoid destroying the world due to their "curse". Thus the reason we haven't seen them much... Another reason we haven't seen them a lot or their corpses in Canterlot is because i believe dead changelings continue to be afflicted by their disease... thus if dying in battle they would "rot" much quicker dissolving into pixie dust in the wind... When a changeling is about to die due to lack of feeding there are two results:Multiple organic failure and death dissolving into pixie dust... or... Devolving and the Devourer Some just could not take it... their primal instincts rose up, as they do to every creature in hunger, and logic was slowly torn from their minds. Inside this... "madness" there was nothing of the former changeling to save, and it was even worse when this occurred near their own people. Because the change was not only mental... Their bodies changed too, they became unstable, much bigger but with extremely thick muscular structure and scales as hard as iron. In this state the remaining life-span of the changeling was short, and while absorbing "love" kept them alive longer their hunger could never be sated. "Devourers"... that is what they called them, from the way they ate their victims whole absorbing every bit of their essence. He and his friends had been forced to kill many changelings that ended this way, but those close to them sometimes could not. How can one strike one his own race, much more one of his own family? Devourers know no exception in their victims and are often kept a secret from the changelings themselves through their Queen and the highest ranking officials for they don't wish the changeling race to hate themselves. 2)Empathy and Mental Link Changelings as i said can see emotions and magic. They posses magical empathy and are affected by those emotions/energies. Changelings posses a natural mental connection with their loved ones and families... the more skilled a changeling is in making such bonds and friendships the higher the rank it can achieve. I believe the crown is imperative to ruling the changelings... the crown is imbued with the magic of an old Queen. The changelings were living underground but ended up having to move due to earthquakes, volcanoes and such. The Queen who had the talent to speak to more changelings than anyone focused her magic and managed to contact all the changelings guiding them... the first Queen to achieve that. She died however not being able to handle the lot of it for such a long time... but her crown got imbued with her magic. Thus the next Queens or Kings had to actually prove by the standards of the crown that they could handle such a bond without losing their minds thus making sure that only the most capable of changelings rose the hierarchy. Making sure that only those who could guarantee the future of the changelings rose up to the challenge... no matter who they were... good or evil. This is mimicked in helmets of the generals and other items. 3)Singing and Music As strange as it might seem all changelings can sing... be it rhythmically or melodically. Music is a great part of their culture and as a consequence every changeling knows how to sing somehow or knows at least one instrument. This is not only because it helps bonding between the changelings but also because it is a form of feeding upon the emotions generated though not so effective. The reason it is not used exclusively is because it would require infinite amounts of inspiration and infinite amounts of singing and resources fact that would be ineffective. Changeling expressions-and their explanation Quoted from my facebook page. "While changelings are not religious instead of praising Celestia like the ponies do they praise the maker. They also use expressions like "What in Tartaurus?" or "Sweet mother of Mercy". There are also expressions like "You're as sweet as royal jelly." in matters of love, and more often than not calling someone "honey" indicates family ties or intimacy. A very popular expression is also "Blood is thicker than water". It means that though we value friendship we put our families above everything. Couples that achieve high levels of bonding will often perform a ritual at which they will cut their hooves and clench them together letting the blood mix. This way they prove their loyalty to each other and develop between them the connection that the Queen shares with all. Indeed. You see... Tartaurus is the home of all evil... thus when something seems so despicable, so evil... we say "What in Tartaurus is THAT?". As i said... parenthood is something we value greatly so it's logical we use the second expression right? Besides family is the first group of people a changeling bonds with and talks through it's mind. Changelings also seem to have a great relation with bees. It seems bees see or "sense" for a better word a connection with us due to our common empathetic bond. After studies we have observed that this is one of the reasons so many of them make their homes near ours. It's not rare to see some of our homes also being used by bees as houses. We have developed over the years an understanding of sorts... we don't hurt each other and in exchange they grant us some of their honey keeping our people fed. It is said that the Queens of each species contacts each other and talks, the Queen is also given certain amounts of "Royal Jelly" which is an empowering delicacy making the changelings feeding upon it stronger in every way. Because of it's sweetness in comparison to normal honey, and it's rarity it is the most appreciated commodity ever. they have become in times of need even defenders to our homes against monsters, other locusts, and sometimes even ponies or others. Thus we have come to value their lives greatly, this has gradually entered our lives as expressions like these." Crowning a King/Queen A Queen or King is judged capable of leading the entire nation by three ancient changeling rulers. King Proteus the Overfather, Queen Metis the cunningly wise, King Nousios the blindly fair. King Proteus-Unifier of Body Name Meaning:Protean means versatile, mutable, adaptable, capable of assuming many forms. It is also the name of a Greek shapeshifter god that could transform into any material imaginable like fire, water, air, e.t.c. Little known fact changelings couldn't always transform. The first of the changelings to transform was Proteus. However his transformations were more related to primal materials. He could shift to stone, metals, water, air, fire. In ancient times he is said to have protected the changelings against the rampage of various forces like windigos, sirens, and others. However the casualties were too high. The changelings being a young race had little defenses against other more capable predators. During the peak of his power he scattered pieces of his body to the entirety of the changelings. The power of the transformation of the great King transferred to all changelings despite the fact that its' overall effect had been lessened. Having granted a fighting chance the spirit of the changeling King now oversees his descendants, his brethren from the planes above. He was granted the title "Unifier of body" by the changelings as his soul resides within everyone. It is said that at times the fragments act as emergency guidance, kind of like the instincts one has, protecting and preserving the race. Queen Metis - Unifier of Hearts Name Meaning:The name Metis means Resourcefulness, "wisdom," "skill," or "craft" and connoted "magical cunning". Metis was the first spouse of Zeus, a shapeshifter Titaness that Zeus swallowed after tricking her into transforming into a fly. The Greek word metis meant a quality that combined wisdom and cunning. This quality was considered to be highly admirable and was regarded by Athenians as one of the notable characteristics of the Athenian character. Queen Metis wore the crown of King Proteus. It was believed that when she wore it the Overfather himself came to contact her and measure her abilities. Regardless Metis became a Queen. At the time the changeling kingdom was underground. Like every changeling she displayed her skills at an early age bonding with friends and family like it was natural. This bond allowed the changelings to respond mentally to each others' needs no matter how far. She however possessed the skill on another level bearing in her mind the thoughts of even a whole town! It was not to last... natural disaster struck and the changeling kingdom was besieged by the eruption of a volcano which struck the foundations of the city. Between the toxic air, the lava, and all the chaos the changelings panicked and couldn't find a way out. Forcing herself to her limits Queen Metis surpassed herself and attained the ability to communicate with them all no matter how far. This bond of a selfless heart guided the changelings to safety. It cost her life however, but the gift she gave did not get squandered. The crown was etched with her own magic and this ability became hereditary for any worthy changeling King or Queen that would wear it for enough time. Those unable would be qualified "temporarily unworthy" until they could attain the necessary levels of empathy it required to bear it. She earned the title "Unifier of Hearts" for through the crown she will always reach out to her subjects. King Nousios - Unifier of Minds Name Meaning:It means "The one who has his mind straight/set in the right direction." Through the judgement of the ancient Kings there were times that the Changeling Kingdom remained without a ruler. Deception, backstabbing, and civil war plagued a kingdom struggling to be united. As a changeling Nousios was known for one thing... having his mind in the right place. Merely by watching a changeling he could tell a lot about them, just like a detective forms a potential profile about his opponent. It also granted him the chance to pierce through lies, illusions, and the such. With this ability he was able to shatter the opposition. When he was judged worthy he addressed the problem of anarchy reigning a Royal-less kingdom ((without a King or a Queen)). It was decided that as a backup to the monarch system there would be a chain of houses that would form each portion of the kingdom, twelve in total. With safety guaranteed even without succession Nousios proceeded to make a cultural renaissance. Laws, education, medicine. It all flourished in an age of peace. It was not guaranteed that the changelings wouldn't squabble but through this system it was ensured that hope would always shine through. Dying in old age King Nousios joined the rest of the rulers and together they formed the trinity that now judges all future changeling rulers. Continuing with the crowning. The power of the crown overflows the body of the King/Queen for one week during which the applicant is transferred to the Astral Plane where the three rulers' spirits judge the applicant based on one thing. Empathy empathy to be able to understand the body, mind, heart, of those around you whether you be friend or foe to them. To be able to understand the souls of those around you whether you are conqueror or peacekeeper. Military and Factions within the Changeling Kingdom Following the time after the failure in Canterlot Queen Chrysalis devoted herself in helping her race improve in every way. The army, the feeding upon love everything would be improved. In the process of doing that the military was revolutionized creating three clans: "The Disciples of Metis", "The Nightshroud Operatives", and "The Envoys of the Black Panther". The "Disciples of Metis" took their name out of the oldest of changeling Queens Metis one who's name connoted "Magical Cunning". They are changelings skilled in the arcane arts excelling in all sectors... their mission is to collect lore for every nation be it traditions, behavior, inventions, history, poetry... "The Disciples of Metis" gather also information about their own nation. Their motto is this "Knowledge is Power". "The Nigtshroud Operatives" took their name out of their ability to hide themselves to the point of invisibility during the night. They are changelings that act both as diplomats and assassins, they count their words one by one and their precision in their tasks is great. Do not be fooled by their title however... "The Nightshroud Operatives" are perfectly capable of fighting during daylight, they are the most agile of changelings and if forced will fight without rules or boundaries of honor. They are inventive in their fighting ways and unpredictable. "The Envoys of the Black Panther" took their name out of honor to the great beast. It is said in old myths that the first black panther blessed some of the changelings for their perseverance through time. They are changeling protectors and guardians that train day by day with extreme discipline to maintain and increase their strength. They are extremely loyal to the Queen and some of them always accompany her on her every journey. They do not hesitate to use force if necessary to protect their Queen whatever the method. After all their ideals are all summarized by one phrase... "All for the Kingdom and the Kingdom for all". Out of all of them a few were chosen as an elite-force group. They are a team of resolute warriors who are determined to repel the invaders, chosen among the three clans of the military of the Changeling Kingdom. They work behind the scenes of Changeling Kingdom. Despite being frequently assigned to dangerous tasks, they do not gain honor, glory, or fame from their work, so there are few members in this team. They are the definition of the word "Protean" the very name of their species meaning they are versatile, mutable adaptable, they are the hoof of the Queen and every single of their actions is made in the name of her glory and the one of the Changeling Kingdom. Changeling National Anthem I made a changeling national anthem here goes... "We know ourselves by the voice... The Voice that unites all The Voice that fills the heart Our Ears listen to the plight The love for which we must fight We know ourselves from the flame... The flame that burns the fake skin To the emerald spark we are akin The flame that burns within we hold The one, united, ancient, bold. We know ourselves from the quest... The quest to purge our taint This journey we bravely take To tame the savage soul To release our form of old." And there you have it... something i made in approximately half an hour you could say... with some breaks to read some online comics. A changeling anthem... I wanted to mention three things in it... first the "hive mind" or "Soul Union" as i call it... Second the transformations, Third the Purpose or at least what i think their purpose is. Do you think i got that right?
  19. Fluttershy may have become a "batpony" but she was still a Pegasus, she grew teeth and her wings changed, she didn't grow any crazy new limbs/appendages that make her filled with new power. It is in my own personal belief that if twilight became a batpony she wouldn't grow wings, her horn would just become more bat-like. And Applejack would just grow fangs and new ear stuff, with an eye change. What do you think, when a pony is turned do they grow wings, or is that determined by whether or not they were Pegasus.
  20. I need some suggestions for a fanfic that I'm going to start writing. My fic is essentially about my OC, Pinoak Stringhoof (OC link in my signature), and having him travel across Equestria telling ponified versions of our folk lore. I already have one story ponified and I'm considering ponifying Chaucer's "A Pardoner's Tale", and maybe even "Lanval". I'm really looking for stories from all across the world, from the Brothers Grimm, to Native American, Chinese, Japanese, Indian, American, etc. It could even be urban legends and what not. I'm just looking for some ideas. Other notes that I have planned for this fic: I plan on having Pinoak perform in Ponyville with the CMC, Mane 6, etc. watching, and I'm thinking on having him do a performance with Trixie for helping with special effects. So, what do you guys think?
  21. The title pretty much says it all, which game do you feel like have the most interesting/comprehensive/best lore and why? I think the Warcraft lore is the best one, few other games got so many sides fighting against each other, so many sides of god and evil and so many badass antagonists. It also got some very interesting characters that lies somewhere between good and evil and fight for their own causes rather than for moral ones (Illidan Stormrage, Lady Vashj, Kael'thas) On second place would be The Elder Scrolls universe, I love the whole Deadra and Aedra god thing that's going there and the different demi-gods and races
