  1. So, I've written down the lyrics for these songs and I'm ready to produce them. Except there's this one problem, I can't rap and I can't make horrorstep. Would anypony be willing to help me.
  2. We'll as said in a post I made earlier I get really nervous about asking others for help. But I need help with this song I made a while back. It's called the everfree forest. But I seriously have no idea how to make horrorstep/rap songs. Can anypony help me?
  3. I am looking for a program that I can write the sheet music and have it play it back with accurate instruments. I had a program several years ago but I can't find it now. Can anyone help?
  4. Hello Everypony! Are you a musician who releases their songs with MIDI sound? Do you know that there's another way? Before you say "I know man, go away." let me offer you some help. I'll explain everything in a Q&A. "How?" I have hardware, a Roland JV 880 to be precise. It's MIDI sound is much better than that of Windows or any other standard stuff. "So?" You send me your MIDI file, I rearrange it to make it fitting for the JV 880 (different instrument sets, etc.) and record it on that. "How does it sound?" Glad you ask! Listen to this: This is the only song I arranged for that device and made only on that device. "But what if I want guitars?" That's an easy one. I use Guitar Pro 6, giving me endless possibilities of virtual guitars. Want to listen? These tracks have been rendered using only Guitar Pro 6. And yes, I own it legaly. "What do you want in exchange?" Nothing. But I'd be glad to be mentioned, may it be in the description or like "[insert your name here] feat. Billy Rex" or something. "Then why do you offer this?" I want to help people that don't have hard- and or software like I do or don't have the know-how to do so. Maybe it allows you to become famous in the fandom? Who knows. "Why should I trust you?" Because the brony community is all about being nice, helping each other, right? I can't blame you to not trust someone who writes a thread about giving him your music. I'd be scpetical, too. "What do I do if I want your help?" You can email me ( ) or simply answer on this thread or send me a pm! It's that easy. May the flow be with you. Greetings, Billy
  5. I love synthesizers, and synthesis/sound design is a huge interest of mine. I only own one hardware synth right now, which is an analogue 1986 Akai AX60. Analogue synthesizers are my favourite, though I spend a lot of time building custom patches in FM8, massive, and other software synths. I figured it would be nice to have a thread to discuss synthesizers and types of synthesis, be it subtractive, additive, FM, analogue, digital, hybrid, modular, waveshaper, anything really.
  6. So I thought I would start a thread about what kind of Equipment people use. Things such as DAW's (Digital Audio Work Station), microphones, instruments, etc. Also what kind of background you have is optional. I guess this would lead to better musical networking in the community. Anyway I'm clarinet player, but I play a lot of other instruments. I can play a bit of piano and less guitar and even less bass. I'm a fan of orchestration and I want to be an professional orchestrator or composer someday. Sadly I'm kind of poor right now, saving up for the tools of this age is hard. You really need a mac, along with some of the DAWs that cost $500+ and samples that cost $500+. I own the full version of finale 2012 which I use to compose and notate. I own reaper which is kind of useless right now because all I have are free chiptune plugins. I own a ok microphone a mxl 990 (Livingtombstone has a usb version of this microphone) and I recently got a cool interface to replace my old non-phantom power interface.
  7. PRE-PRODUCTION Do I have a theme to my music, a concept? Is this a fresh concept or a tired retread? Will this fit into my style or the rest of my catalog? Is this a good idea that people will like? Would it have a very small audience? Am i catering to ANY audience? Do I have a genre in mind or a creative hybid of several? Be familar with the sounds of those genres before production. If a remix; do I have permission, a midi file, stems, or an flp to do the work? Is this track Pony enough!? Can I justify sending this to EQD by the end? Do I have the time to pull this track off from start to completion (is there an event deadline)? I write down all good concepts i have in a concept queue so if i can't do them immediately i could do them later if they still sound like a good idea. PRODUCTION A reminder to rename your project with a new name or number every time you make a significant change to it so you can revert back from any mistakes. Assign a mixer channel for every instrument you have. Rename and add colors to differentitiate between patterns and instruments. Are my synths or libraries good enough? Have I avoided recognizable defaults presets and made my own? Is my track too repetitive? Do I have enough different melodies and sections? Is my track to minimal? Is there enough elements going on throughout? Is my track to short or long? Is it interesting throughout? Do i have mix in /mix out points? Is it dj friendly if it's edm? How are my drums? Too simple, strong enough, eq'd right? Does each instrument stand out? Loud enough, panned, and eq'd? Does it need vocals? Samples? Are they compressed and eq'd right? Do I have drops, risers, sidechaining, filters, glitch, or noise sweeps? Do I have enough automation and effects on the track? Is my track completely in key? Any fades outs needed? Is my track infringing on any prior piece of music uncredited (especially important if you plan to sell it)? Have I listened to my track multiple times on different equiptment? Have I had several friends listen to my WIP to recommend changes? Is my final track eq'd or mixed effectively? Are there no remaining flaws? Is there enough reverb on the final track? Is it too clean? Is it organic enough? Is there any clipping? Am I relying on a limiter to mask poor mixing? (Don't do that) Is my track loud and full enough (across all EQ freq)? (ie had a final Mastering phase) If I am absolutely stuck at this point, take a break and come back in a week or two and repeat going through the checklist. RELEASE Has the original artist heard the remix and given a thumbs up before it's release? (for remixes). Not required but might be nice for their input or to make them be aware it's coming out and to look for it. Have I let them know about the video upload when it's completed so they can check it out? Have I named it appropriately? Check splelling!! Is that title in the video for the track? Does it look good? Is the mp3 tagged correctly before the upload? Do I have artwork to go with the track? Is it credited, linked, and approved? Does it look good? Have I let them know about the video upload so they can check it out? Is there animation or just a boring static image? Is my youtube 720p or above (HD) for better quality music? Is the art/pmv good? Is the thumbnail worth clicking on after the upload? Does it look good on youtube or do i need to re-up for better thumb choices(3)? Does this compete with what other brony musicians are doiing? Does it look and sound ok? (in stereo, no glitches or bad encoding) Have I credited and linked to any original artist and track? (for a remix) Have I linked back to the original via a youtube video response so it will show as a link from the original track? Have I explained the concept behind the track in the description? (Very important with EQD) Have I linked back to a working mp3 link? Have I uploaded this to all the places I upload my music to? (soundcloud, eqbeats, etc) Have I submitted this track to EqD, EqR, or any other periodical or website? Tumblr post? Linked ouot to friends? If Eqd features my track have I given a secondary link if my download maxes out? (ie only 100 downloads for a free soundcloud account) Have I posted it on my own tumblr? On my own youtube playlist? As a featured video? Have i looked to friends to help promote, alt bronysites, or reddit? POST-RELEASE Did my friends/other musicians like it? Did people comment, favorite, or download? What was the positive and negative feedback? Justified? Did I gain subscriptions from this track? What would I have done differently? (add it to the checklist!) If feedback is poor and based on production failure should I re-do / VIP a new / better version? Listen to your track a month later, do you still like it? Are you proud of it? Should you VIP remix, drop it, or feel good. Learn and improve. I wanted to post (and update) a music list I made awhile back based on all my experiences with making music and things I've learned often from mistakes. With so many steps involved in making a track (pre-production,production,release, and reflection) it's very easy to make mistakes, skip steps, or forget to do things but I am hoping this may help whoever has looked into making music, or makes it currently, and just how involved it is and how important are some of the marketing steps (if you want to be even seen these days). Hopefully this will help someone as i don't see too many music making threads in creative resources. Any questions, thoughts,or anything you think I may be missing please let me know.
  8. Hey everypony! Here's something I wrote today honoring my favorite pony, Rarity. This music is an original composition by me. I hope you all enjoy :3
  9. Here's the description I put for the video, since I don't want to write a separate one for this thread : The final sequence for the semester. It's supposed to be winter-inspired, and when it's turned in, it's supposed to be on a Christmas CD thing that my teacher will be releasing... if he likes the song enough. Yup, he'll be choosing the best tracks out of all them. I prolly won't win. XP
  10. My latest Music Tech assignment was to make a theme song for a nonexistant show called "Science and Technology of the Future". So I made this thing. Enjoy.
  11. Four our third assignment, we were to make a song for a sporting event that's fast and exciting. I chose to do racing-type-stuff, so I made a fast-paced d'n'b rock song for it. This is how it turned out. I may or may not change things for when I turn it in. Also I learned a lot from the lessons we went through before actually beginning the project. These lessons included how to use effects and... well actually that's about it. We also learned to not let songs have clipping and I personally learned to change things in the mixing. And yeah, I copied that bit of information from what I put in the video description. I'm friggin' tired, okay? The song is downloadable at Newgrounds if ya wanna.
  12. My second project for my Music Tech class. We were told to make a 32-bar song using original stuff and loops too. But being the overachiever I (not really) am, I made it about 34 bars long.
  13. As you may or may not know, I have a Music Tech class in school, and in it we use Reason (a music sequencer program) to do music thiiiiiiings. Last week we began our first assignment, a 32-bar song, and it was due yesterday. And because it's the class I care the most about, I got it in all finished and on time, and I added extra 33rd bar! Extra credit! So yeah, just felt like it'd be fun to show it off a bit. I used the melody from Zelda: Ocarina of Time's "Temple of Time/Song of Time" song, hence why I called it a "remix".
