  1. This is an example of the thought process one can use to reach a conclusion with knowledge we already have, but did not think to consider. It just takes some time and patience. If the brain can store massive quantities of data, why do most people not consciously recall it all? Its because people do not try. All you need is spare time, and recognition of an almost order of operations of logic. In this example I start by asking a question that most would think has no definite objective answer. Then I keep going through a self-critical process of proposals based on reflections and the knowledge it brings to the foreground that I already had but did not know I had. So to simplify. 1. 'unknowable' question 2. reflection 2.a knowledge from reflection 2.b applying the knowledge into the equation 2.c rule it out if it doesn't objectively answer anything 3. repeat 2 til it does objectively answer something 4. add this into the equation permanently 5 repeat 2-5 as needed til the first question is answerable. 6. The answer and its objectively true within the assumptions that 'the world is real'.
  2. As many of you heard or are familiar with past life/ life reincarnation do you believe in it? Do you think it's possible? Many would believe that when we die, we either disappeared or go to heaven. So how about being "recycled"? Have you guys ever felt something connecting to you like a lose memories but cannot put in words? Example do you deeply feel connected with a specific different times era, places or objects for some unexplained reason? Here is a basic idea of what a past live(s) is if case you are not familiar with it. If you guys have a story or know a story relating to past lives, feel free to share it if you want to. Many would be skeptical about this. If people wish to go to a session to regain their past lives memories a psychologist will be hypothesising you to guide you down the memory lane. Of course you wouldn't know if they are justing messing with your mind for $$ or if it's actually true. So that is the cons side about past lives. But is there other ways to regain it without going to session?

    Death Note, Light's Psychology

    I rewatched death note entirely (you prolly wouldn't like it since you are antiviolence a little) and after watching the anime long enough its easy to fall into the assumption that you root for the protagonist. But this is not the show that you are supposed to do that for. This show is like against the grain bad-assery so people love rooting for the underdog. But the truth is his psychology is like almost a school shooter but not pushed over the edge yet, turned serial killer. I only know that because of this other video with strong language explaining somewhat the psychology in laymans terms with over-flourishing strong language (guy used to be a radio host so can be eloquent speedy and creative with his insults/criticisms lol) (if you want to see the video youtube 'rageaholic Faberge eggs' wont link it due to language) and its basically rich spoiled kid told he is special all his life : no one treats them special at school : entitlement dictates they deserve more : they decide to act out. Light Yagami in death note is more like rich kid in a well off family who is a genius. He has boredom (studies show boredom is linked to crime, even for rich kids) he is a popular kid who is socially adept. The cartoon doesn't show it directly at the start at all, but he always had sociopathic and psychopathic traits. The first hint is when he gains ambition after first using the death note I am a deep thinker, so this stuff is on my mind. When I was a Christian it was easier for me to root for Light Yagami, because that's the philosophy it teaches, The world is disgusting. Also, teen angst, its easier to see the negatives than positives. They say you never know what you love til its gone, like your family, but he had reasons to not notice, because 'the greater good' concepts. He threw everything of any value in his life away, then died alone by the end of the show. When I was a Christian I did not understand that. As an adult, and as an atheist its far more noticeable. As a teen Christian I was just rooting for the underdog really. Except, I loved L as a character, so eccentric n honest and logical and some non-social behavior. But Light Yagami was very good socially, its why he could take up lying so easily so quickly, and had alot more initiative than L, the true good guy in the story. Near the end you know the author is not on Light Yagami's side. Because when Light thinks the world is basically his own, he says he is creating a 'perfect world' because it'll be crime free. But then it immediately cuts wordlessly to some factories giving off pollution on the other side of the river as if to show how its not perfect. Nothing fundamentally changed, and when Light dies, chaos may erupt knowing that violence will go unpunished for some time. The world will become normal after several decades, it'll only be a little more impactful than the cold war. Which means he was playing this role for himself, and this ambition scene shows it. His entitlement complex. He thinks everyone is beneath him, because they are all easily lied to and stupid and he passes without trying for full scores on everything in Japan. He had no ambition, was just being a good son, til the death note. He had no purpose, til that. Sorta like how rich kids might go and beat up hobos. Except he was also a genius due to solid up-bringing. Too bad he couldn't see what really mattered, or he could, but found his excuses to justify his actions. He had to do so, because his father is a cop, he was forced into being dishonest due to his life circumstance. Others won't notice that its because of his typical ideology in his family, his normalcy and passion for justice from his father, how easy it is to get away with stuff when you have an entirely unsuspicious of yourself family, an entirely non-critical family. Others might think I am overthinking it, but if an artist made it this way intentionally, which they did, then its not overthinking it. It just would imply its too much for others to handle. I might turn this into a blog post. When he specifically says what are you talking about, I am the best honor student in Japan, that's a sign he already had façade practice. Narcissism is what he has in common to that type of school shooter. And he already knows he can trick everyone with appearances alone.
  4. I guess we all remember what Twilight Sparkle once said, "All the ponies in this town are CRAZY!" I can see why she might think that. Is she actually right though? Yes, most of the ponies she met are kind of strange, but is there something more to that? Yes, My Little Pony is a children's TV show, but i like to believe that alot of the character, show symptoms of serious mental disorder. It is actually very obvious if you look at it in a certain way. Are the ponies indeed have some form mental illnesses? Let's find out Ironically, the pony we know most about her psych is the same pony that declares the others crazy -- Twilight Sparkle. Her character throughout the first season and into the second was one that was relatively reclusive, untrusting, and bookish. She felt a huge obligation towards getting things done right, and getting them done on time. These are all symptoms of Avoidant Personality Disorder, a mental imbalance characterized by actively avoiding social contact, out of fear of being ridiculed. People (or in this case, ponies) with AvPD aren't afraid of social interaction, per say; they simply believe they're any good at it, and would just make things bad on themselves and others. They do however generally strive for a social life, which it is shown that Twilight did in fact wish for at the end of the season 1 opener. Victims of AvPD use fantasy or unorthodox habits as a form of escapism, which Twilight exhibits frequently with her profound love for reading and her not-so-slight OCD. Though they are withdrawn, they read a lot into body language and intonation, more often than not coming to a pessimistic conclusion. At first glance, you wouldn't believe Twilight to exhibit this, but she shows it blatantly in Lesson Zero, where she fears that Princess Celestia -- arguably the only pony Twilight trusts completely aside from her brother -- would send her back to Magic Kindergarten. Therefore, it can be concluded that Twilight had been slightly traumatized during her years in Kindergarten, likely the result of bullying and ridicule. Fluttershy as well shows a fear of social interaction; hers, however, manifests in a rather severe case of what is called Social Anxiety Disorder, or social phobia. Many people assume AvPD and SAD to be one in the same; however there are many specific differences between the two, the main one being that social phobia is an actual fear of social interaction, whereas AvPD is simply an avoidance. The main symptoms of social phobia is a pervasive and consistent fear of talking to, being talked to, or otherwise interacting with a person or persons. There is also a withdrawal from society, sometimes even to the point of hermitry. All of these, Fluttershy has exhibited on more than one occasion (though significantly less in season three). There are also several physical symptoms associated with social phobia, such as blushing, nausea, and stammering -- all of which Fluttershy has at one point or another shown, stammering being extremely prevalent. Panic attacks may also be present; and indeed, Fluttershy has a panic attack when Rainbow Dash pushes her to show how fast she can fly in front of hundreds of other pegasi. It is shown in her cutie mark flashback that she had been bullied throughout her school life, which is one of the more common causes of social phobia. Rainbow Dash's pushy nature might also be a contributing factor, but her loyalty and companionship is one that Fluttershy considers indisposable. In this, she seems to exhibit several symptoms of Dependent Personality Disorder as well. This is reinforced by the fact that comorbidity between Social Anxiety and DPD is relatively common. The pony that is more often than not considered the craziest is of course Pinkie Pie, the perplexing pretty pink party pony. Her bubbly, energetic personality is a classic case of vivacious subtype of Histrionic Personality Disorder. People with HPD are defined as impulsive, hyperactive, and have a notably low tolerance for negative emotions, even ones not necessarily aimed towards them. Her element, Laughter, is pretty much a light-up sign indicating her intolerance for negative emotions. Victims of HPD have a deep-seeded craving for attention as well, which Pinkie shows rather blatantly in Party Of One. Her spontaneous party throwing can be considered a manifestation of her subconscious need for attention, which is reinforced by her persistance in trying to befriend Cranky Doodle (even to the point of breaking into his house). A possible cause of her mental deficiency is familial abuse. Having grown up on a rock farm and working day-in and day-out as a mere child undoubtedly poses severe mental health problems. The dysfunction termed Hypomania is characterized by a larger-than-life self-image, racing thoughts, and dangerous activity -- all of which can be used to describe one Rainbow Dash, arguably the loudest and most self-possessed pony in Ponyville. A major indicator for hypomania is what is called psychomotor agitation, a reflexive need to move. This is often characterized by restlessness when sitting still, pacing, or biting lips. In Rainbow Dash's case, hovering or extending and retracting her wings are strong indicators of psychomotor agitation. She also exhibits extremely dangerous activity on a daily basis, pushing herself to the brink of her ability to perform death-defying tricks and one day ultimately join the Wonderbolts, a famous team of expert stunt pegasi. Rainbow has a major egocentric personality, continually places herself higher on the pedestal than others; however, she wouldn't hesitate to help her close friends, even to the point of her giving up her dreams in order to help them in a time of need. This lends to the opinion that her hypomania is in no way destructive, except for her edge-of-the-seat lifestyle, and in fact has a positive effect on her and the people surrounding her. Applejack is a hard character to describe, much less diagnose. She's a hard-worker who hates handing the reigns over to anyone else, she never censors herself, and loves to help others who are in need. In this, she seems rather sane, but if you squint really hard you can see that she seems to exhibit several characteristics of Self-defeating Personality Disorder (aka Masochistic Personality Disorder). She deliberately puts herself in harms way throughout the series: Applebuck Season, where she decides to harvest the entire apple orchard by herself; The Last Roundup, where she moves out of town to get a better paying job so as to raise money and fix town hall; and Spike At Your Service, where she saves Spike not only from a pack of hungry timberwolves, but also a giant timberwolf at the end of the episode. She even went so far as to walk all the way around a mountain with another pony on her back, simply because said pony was too scared to climb it herself. This show of altruism definitely points towards a virtuous form of MPD, but she shows a complete lack of the feelings of deserved gratitude. This loans to somewhat oppresive tendencies, since she expresses genuine feelings towards everyone and everything (she is the element of Honesty, afterall), even if those feelings are negative. However, she doesn't have the self-pitiable nature that commonly accompanies the oppresive subtype; this could possibly be due to her altruistic tendencies. The final character we are going to go over is the element of Generosity, Rarity. She, like Applejack, is more than willing to sacrifice her time, money, body parts, etc., on other people without hesitation. Unlike Applejack, however, she is willing to gloss over unsavory comments, instead favoring to soften the blow. She has a tendency to overreact to situations and she is a professional "whiner". On several occasions she's shown to place other people before her lifelong dreams, notably in Green Isn't Your Color, where she would rather help Fluttershy become supermodel than for Rarity to become a world-famous fashion designer. She appears to exhibit characters not unlike the appeasing subtype of Histrionic Personality Disorder. Whereas Pinkie Pie's vivacious HPD focused more on being hyperactive and neurotic, Rarity's appeasing HPD focuses more on brushing away bad emotions, instead focusing on giving unto others and making them happy, as a way to avoid dealing with her own problems. The main difference between appeasing HPD and virtuous Masochistic Personality Disorder -- which we went over with Applejack -- is that there is no feelings of deservation with HPD, and there is no repressing of emotions with MPD. Self-sacrifice is a hugely defining symptom of appeaseful HPD, and Rarity's entire being is dedicated to such. This might seem like nothing but a benefit to others, however it can be extremely detrimental to the victim of the illness. Repressed emotions can cause serious health risks, and given the selfless nature of those exhibiting it, the risks might go unheeded. I think it is safe to assume that Twilight was right in her statement that all the ponies were indeed, "crazy". But we attach too many negative connotations to that word; a more accurate word -- and one that would sound less negative -- would be "disturbed". This is a very unique show, in more ways than one. We've had The Big Lebowski ponified, we've had government conspiracies, we've had international espionage -- If you ask me, it's not too surprising that we also have mental deficiencies.
  5. @Dark Horse Was in my office for a therapy session. He was a bit anxious and nervous about telling to me his problems, but there is nothing that a little "eye to eye" from me can't do. Now that he is relaxed and hypnotized, he can tell me all of the problems that are on his mind. This was made by a good friend of mine, who is not on this forum
  6. It's kind of odd to see someone questioning the idea of friendship within a group dedicated to it. And yet, I still question. So, what is friendship? And I challenge you not to immediately jump to the obvious answer of "magic". The show and, of course, the fandom has conditioned you to say that. But have you stepped back and considered the connections that you make with others across miles of land and ocean? How close are they? How many do you maintain? Can they be as strong as a relationship created in "real life"? But first, some definitions: Our lovely friend Merriam Webster defines friends as: a person you like and enjoy being with But you already knew that. If you didn't like somebody, you wouldn't be friends. However, this doesn't address a reciprocal relationship, so, in theory, you could simply proclaim to be someone's friend without their consent, and it would be true. Now compare that to Merriam Webster's definition of...: Love: a feeling of strong or constant affection for a person Affection: a feeling of liking and caring for someone or something Magic: special power, influence or skill So, one could assume that a friendship contains at least some love, no matter the circumstances. Sure, a best friend's love is on a different level than that of a crush or the like, but love remains. On the topic of "friendship is magic", based on this definition only, I'd say that's true. Friendship can certainly influence others into doing things, and it most certainly has power. But I think that its power is hyped too far by some. I know this is a lot of information, but I'd also like to point to Sigmund Freud, the father of psychoanalysis. In his work, Civilization and Its Discontents, he says that love within a person is finite. You can love or make friends with as many people as you'd like, but with each relationship that you tack on, the individual gets less and less love. And considering strangers, he says the following: "Not merely is this stranger on the whole not worthy of love, but, to be honest, I must confess he has more claim to my hostility, even to my hatred." Human nature tends to hate strangers, simple as that. He also goes on to say that your strongest love at all times is that of yourself. We, as humans, as naturally egocentric. So, given the information above, what do you agree with; what do you think? How does this relate to the fandom? Consider the problems when looking at people on Facebook with over 1000 "friends". And, even here on the forums, that problem can exist. Though I don't have a lot of evidence to go off of, that problem must exist. Surely, one with hundred of friends cannot possible have high levels of relationships with them all. Granted, I have been here for a bit over a month, sporadically. I also have four friends, here, only one of which I communicate with consistently. So, perhaps I'm blind to the "magic" so many speak of. (This is not a plea to get more friends, by the way, but, I admit, a guilt trip can go a long way).

    Religion and fiction similarities

    I am an ex-Christian. When I was a Christian I was engaged by wanting to avoid going to hell in any way I could so I did research and eventually found out it was false, but my point is I'm not ignorant on religion. I also grew up with some final fantasy, and it was incredibly engaging and confusing but motivating and sorta inspiring. But yesterday I recognized more similarity between fiction and religion. Namely the Abrahamic religion is so popular its essentially a no contest, and that means its doing something right other religions are not. Final Fantasy was a best seller so it too was doing something right, and recently I was looking up theory sorta final fantasy videos then I realized, the greater the cost to not adventure in Final Fantasy, is the greater the motivator to adventure. I realized religion is similar, the threat of eternal hell, an apocalypse, muddled history and conflicting messages. Jenova of ff7 was also confusing, being controlled through Sephiroth to take on his form, and you are actually chasing Jenova the majority of the time. And yes Jenova sounds alot like Jehova. But then how about mentioning the epic of Gilgamesh and Gilgamesh's role in the final fantasy world. Anyways. I come to the accurate conclusion that the greater the cost, the more willingness to be invested. And what greater cost is there really? This could be incredibly useful for fictional writing. If we look to tv shows their stakes are high if they are popular. Or at least are acted as if they are high. Like it could be a lower stake but presented more dramatically or meaningfully. Its due to value, you threaten everything a person is or can have, then it motivates them to charge ahead. But what motivation is it? In a story that is popular its the force behind communicating about it like a fanboy, discussing it after because you feel motivated by it. Sort of like those who understand the risk and consequence of hell better who are Christian tend to try educating themselves more to see what is the way to ensure heaven over hell (and then the bible says only 144,000 can go to heaven lol and being the logical person you are you realize the odds are basically extremely low so you need to find out even more and cannot rely on assuming your god has your back. Eventually there are things in the bible that contradict reality and itself enough so one day a flood of realization occurs after one new fact then you are like desensitized briefly cathartic and numb and can't think due to being stunned, that it was really so obviously fake in hind-sight.) So anyways, sorry but this is a blog I'm allowed to get personal. Anyways I think its a great theory for story writing, even if its basic in a way. Its basically like saying certain shows or forms of media or stories thrill us due to the subconscious risk we associate with it, and because it motivates us it seems fun. But something feels off about it, that's where final fantasy throws in a Sephiroth being a loony so you feel off right when you should, it seems more natural even. There is a saying about logical studies that is something like, if you are confused it means you heard something that doesn't match up with what you currently believe. Religious bypass that with faith to ensure their long term confusion and doubt are buffered against. But another thing they have in common is mystery and limited information. The only source of information in the story you get is through the conflict, like in religion. It sorta sets up a batman and joker complex, you rely on the enemy for something. It might even be similar to Stockholm syndrome. And thing is, with so many other religions, or at the time the idea of heaven and hell were made Christianity wasn't entirely in power, so what do they do is make you feel important because you don't feel empowered. Its your source of power, this psychologically forces your new neurons and brain expenditure to be filtered through that first. Its a type of conditioning. Its exactly like gratitude to a hero. You want to see if you can support their cause. And the heaven vs hell thing applies even more because if you are a minority in the world you can be tricked into thinking you are the one of the few elite. This is an appeal to egotism, just like playing hero in a story is an appeal to egotism. Just like being a martyr can be satisfactory because it still says you were important and persecuted and if anything is a confirmation bias proving you were better than them. Its a really anti-social mindset if you look at it in one way. 'Them'. This just means psychologically speaking your neurons associate pain with 'them' which increases aggressive and antisocial attitudes. This is why in the bible it says the world is evil, that's why in ff7 the world is practically run by shinra. It makes you hate reality, doubt humanity irrationally. You vs the world. That's what fervor is. And I recognize fanboying is rather similar. They can defend their fandom to the death and are eternally hyped. Heroes in stories are tremendously popular, and also an aspect of alot of modern and pre-modern religions. Like Celtic religions had alot of bloodshed and battles and heroism, then there was complex plot for Rome and Greece religions because of how many mixed cultures it was. Even final fantasy is western due to Japan practicing a combination of religions including some Christianity Shintoism Buddhism and I forget the fourth. And there is a game theory on how ff is anti-organized-religion but pro spiritual, and I can def see that just look at half the stuff Aerith says then Shinra is a corrupt organization in power. Look at the history of the catholic church, its literally impossible the rulers actually believed what they were saying, AND they had more information which implies they knew a god didn't exist the whole time which is why they feel free to be hypocrites at the top levels. Because they both know more, and decide that means god isn't real, and continue telling you to believe, and they built the Vatican off of their greed and to this day are eating til they are fat. They aren't monk-like or humble, they are disgusting and the most popular organized religion of the world yet. And they force others to submit to fear more often because they are more aware of how one can feel low, to be forced to serve through them. Like showing submission in their churches asking to be forgived in their churches already psychologically causes an inferiority complex similar to master slave relationships. Please god forgive me [or eternal torture] please don't [send me to hell] I'm sorry for everything [you deserve pity, feel graced I will allow you to be forgiven then serve me more in the future due to gratitude that I won't eternally torture you today]. Then in final fantasy 7 you feel powerless and such. At one point Sephiroth gives you a materia by throwing it at you with force and then your character can barely stand up (Cloud) then you take the materia after anyways. And Sephiroth is motivated by being the chosen one (just like in Christianity you are the chosen line of people, reminds me of the teacher's pet sorta deal). Idk I guess I said it all already and am half rambling due to lack of feeling like a strong conclusion occurred. Post your thoughts below.
  10. I saw this post recently on Equestria Daily about this ongoing brony study, for which I've occasionally seen requests for survey takers over the last couple of years or so. If you look at the post itself and the comments (as well as other posts about this study over the years), many people write about this study being "for science" or "scientific" or whatnot. However, I can't help wondering whether this study should actually be considered "scientific", and to what extent the conclusions of the study are valid. I would think that there are certain standard practices that have to be followed with human subject surveys in order for the results of those surveys to be accurate, and in order for the subset of the population which is surveyed to be an accurate representation of the general population being characterized. It seems to me like this study might not follow all of those practices, and if not, then claims which the researchers or other people citing the study make about bronies in general (which assume that the survey takers answered truthfully and represent the general brony or non-brony population) would not necessarily be valid. One big issue is that the survey is voluntary and opt-in, and, as far as I can tell, survey takers seem to be recruited just from making posts asking people to take the survey on a handful of MLP-related websites, as well as perhaps people hearing about it at, for example, brony conventions or meet-ups. By recruiting survey takers in this fashion, the study would leave out anyone who does not frequently visit those MLP-related websites (such that they don't see the posts asking for survey takers) or go to brony cons or meet-ups. As an example, two of my younger sisters watch the show, but essentially never visit "brony" websites, and would never even know that this study exists, even though at least one of them could fit the definition of being a "brony". Even then, some people who do see one of the calls for survey takers won't have the time or motivation to take the survey. When I went to the website where the study is hosted, I found that the current survey there is tens of questions long (including questions which ask for written-out answers) and estimated to take 40-45 minutes to complete, and as far as I know, survey takers are not compensated in any way for completing the survey. Consequently, some people (like me) could see how long the survey is and decide that it's not worth bothering to fill it out. Also, one of the previous studies tried to compare bronies and non-bronies, but how exactly were non-bronies recruited to take a 45-minute long survey for no compensation for the purposes of a brony study? Would those non-bronies who were recruited and willing to fill out the survey representative of the non-brony population to be compared against? So, again, the study would leave out people who don't have the time or motivation to take a 45-minute long survey for zero compensation. Furthermore, with a survey as long as this one is, with no compensation for filling it out, a significant number of survey takers may get "survey fatigue" by the end of it, such that later questions in the survey may not be answered fully or accurately. Also, the survey (or previous surveys) may ask questions about age, gender, race, dating life, social attitudes, etc. which potential survey takers may not feel comfortable answering, and as a consequence, they may give false answers or just stop taking the survey altogether. And with online surveys like this which are essentially open to any anonymous person filling out, are there any methods in place of filtering out, for example, trolls giving intentionally false answers on the survey, people who would fill out the survey multiple times, people taking the survey who aren't in the target population to be studied, etc.? So there are several potential accuracy issues even with the completed surveys. In the FAQ section of the brony study website, the response to a question about what the data has proven most certainly is that "the statistics we use are really complex and there are many factors analyzed". What does this mean? Maybe the researchers feed the survey results into some kind of statistical analysis software, which might then give a bunch of analysis about whether correlations between certain variables are statistically significant. Howver, this could be a case of "garbage in, garbage out", in the sense that if the survey results fed into the statistical analysis software are not representative of the general brony (or non-brony) community, then the output analysis from the software could still not be representative of the brony (or non-brony) community, regardless of the statistically significant correlations that were found. In conclusion, this brony study, because of the methods by which survey takers are recruited and the length of the survey, may be surveying mostly hardcore, dedicated bronies - people who would see one of the calls for survey takers and are willing to put in the time and effort to fill out the survey with no compensation. If this is the case, and if concerns like those I've written about above are not adequately accounted for, then conclusions from analyzing the results of this study may not be representative of the general brony population, and it may not necessarily be appropriate to call this study "scientific". To be clear, I don't have a problem with unscientific studies per se, and I'm not saying that this study shouldn't be conducted or that the results of the study are worthless. I just think that this study and the results of it should not be misrepresented or overstated. What do you think? Are these concerns about this brony study legitimate?     okay before i begin i just want to give you a heads up this topic is about games and how they seem to say or do something amazing but in reality just state bland lines or make up twists that have no cohesion with the plot, the biggest one to me being the whole andrew ryan speech about a man chooses a slave obeys, the first time i heard this i thought it was a very true and solid statement. i have now thought about it and see that it is a very skewed and black and white way of looking at things. i mean what if a man chooses to obey? what is a slave is given a choice? what if in reality everyone chooses but a man fights and gets the choices he wants? i want to discuss your feelings on these kinds of philosophy and what games you think had a good messege until you saw it without the rose tinted glasses.

    Psychology and MLP

    Hi, guys. I was wondering if you could help me in any way. Sooo for my Psych class, our final project is to do a research paper. As in we choose something, we collect data about it, we analyse our data, and we write about it. I want to do something related to MLP but I really don't know where to begin. The only real idea I have right now is seeing if I can work with one of the elementary school classes and possibly do a survey to see the effects that a certain episode would have on their opinion of the characters. I would maybe have them circle the picture of their favorite pony of the main 6 and then have them watch an episode with a prominent character role (I was thinking Magical Mystery Cure) to see if more children would change their opinion and on a second survey, more people would circle Twilight as their favorite. But I'm not really sure how I would make this work or anything like that. If you guys have any suggestions that could make my idea better, or if you have any ideas for a project of your own that I could borrow, I would reallyyyyyy appreciate it. Thanks so much.
  16. I hope this is the right place to place this, if it is not I apologize to the mods/admins in advance. So last night I arrived to an appointment about half an hour early, found myself a nice bench to sit on and looking around I noticed how miserable everyone was. I was on the city's busiest street, just a block up from one of the busiest intersections and everyone going by looked angry, sad, or some other form of miserable. I started to feel uncomfortable just being around so much negativity so I whipped out my phone and started playing "Love Is In Bloom" (the 15 minute looped version). I played it loud enough so that those walking by my bench would be able to hear it clearly without it being so loud that it would be intrusive in people's conversations, heard across the street or what have you. So with this playing on my little LG I just people watched. Every single person that went by looked at me, and gave me some form of smile even if it was just a corners of the mouth smile. A smile that a lot of them kept after ( more than one person looked back at me and were still smiling) they had passed by. I was there for about half an hour and came across people of every gender, multiple races and a whole spectrum of ages. Though no one seemed to recognize the song, and if they did they didn't say anything. Normally you should have at least a couple of people who scowl at you for making noise, or they just don't want to have some bubble gum pop in their ear but nope. So later on I tried again at a mall, on the subway...same results. Got most of the people on the subway car smiling. So why am I posting about this? What's the point? Well first off the fact that something pony related can bring smiles to so many is pretty fantastic. It wasn't even "Smile, Smile, Smile" which I actual expect to generate negative results from a random cutting of the population; something I plan to test in the next couple of weeks. Secondly, I want to suggest you try something similar, and not at your normal haunts (not work, or school or whatever) in places where people don't know you. Don't have it blasting, don't wave it in people's faces but see what happens. It can be any pony song that you love though "Smile, Smile, Smile" has a big chance to back fire because people hate being told to smile randomly. But do it and see what happens. Why? Because getting someone to smile can change their whole day, and you may be making the world a better place for someone (or not as dark at least) though a small and simple act. Also, a lot of people use sociology and psychology to make you feel bad, tired, to buy stuff, to fear stuff, hate stuff, like stuff...using it for something positive is so rare we should try. Who knows maybe you will make a new friend or acquaintance? Plus making others smile tends to make us feel good so not only would it be good of you, it will be good for you!

  18. Why do gamers game? A question I've had on my mind for quite sometime, but not one I can answer so easily. More than anything, I believe it's a psychological way of thought. A gamer's mind is clearly different from the average Joe, as we gain a significant amount of creativity from the astonishing games we play daily. Of course, we all have different opinions on exactly why we play video games. For some, it's just a hobby, some a deep passion, and then there are those who are into them much more than I can describe. Video games aren't just something we (the gamers) do to kill time, it's truly a way of life for us. Something I would like to bring up, there's a pretty popular YouTube series on the net titled " The Game Theorists", whom happen to be one of my favorite gaming groups. Not too long ago, I believe they hit 1 million subscribers (congrats to them) and did a special gaming theory titled "Why You Play Video Games", the exact topic I'm attempting to cover now.Spoiler alert, the ending was pretty disappointing to me, with the basic "the question is yours to answer" statement, as I had actually hoped for a psychological explanation as to why gamers play video games. There's also a fairly old IGN article I read by a user who attempted to cover the very same subject. I couldn't find the article to link, but I believe, if memory serves correctly, the guy stated that gamers usually play video games to escape the real world problems they may be having in life (in a nutshell, of course). Since I read that article, and watched the video, I've been constantly having thoughts on the question: Why do I love playing video games? What I think, is pretty similar to what the IGN user said. I think gamers play video games when (not all - but most) the player's life needs some excitement, when it's not everything they want it to be. Do you remember when you were just a child on Halloween night, and you would dress up to go trick-or-treating as your favorite cartoon character or super hero? I believe it's a lot more like that than anything. When a player picks up a controller, they enter the life of a fictional character, to chose what he or she does at any time they want. I've stated several times on the MLP Forums that The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was my favorite video game of all time, even though I'm a huge Sonic the Hedgehog fan. But why is this? Mostly to it being an RPG, a Role Playing Game. In Skyrim, I am able to pick and chose to be whoever I want to. If I want to be a mage and conqueror the ways of magic, I can do so. If I want to be a fearless warrior who always dives into battle, I can do that too. What I'm doing in this game is picking how I want to live my fictional life however I want it to be, and have to answer to no one. Offline, I have the most boring life I believe a human being can have. I live on a small farm, only have 2 friends who can be real jerks at times, and I live with my parents still (but I'm not complaining). I've served my time going to school, and now I'm adapting to the real world with a working a job and bills to pay, this life I live is boring. When the end of the day comes, and everyone is in bed, I can hardly wait to pick up the controller to enter a different life, one that I've built the way I want it to be. Even if the game isn't Skyrim, it can be something else I really enjoy like Sonic or Halo, Titanfall or Gears of War, Star Fox or Tomb Raider, God of War or Rayman, the possibilities are (literally) never ending. When playing video games, I can control whether I want to be the hero, or a villain, there are no bounds to what I can do in life behind this controller. If I'm playing Star Fox and I want to do a barrel roll, you better believe I'm going to do one! In conclusion, I believe gamers game because life "offline" isn't what they want it to be. Behind the keyboard or controller, you can be whoever you want to be. I'm not saying every hardcore gamer has a boring or dull life, but I'm fairly certain most do. Life isn't exactly fun when you graduate and become an adult out on your own, it's perfectly natural to want more excitement in your life, and to live one you possibly couldn't. I'm not saying that as a bad thing, but how many of you reading this could go out and fight a dragon at will? Or use the power of the Chaos Emeralds to become Super "Username"? Fiction, make-believe, and imagination are all wonderful things that can bring joy to plenty of others. And it's thanks to our favorite game developers that have a passion for making these adventures possible for each and every one of us. There's also some gamers out there who not only enjoy the amazing writing and creativity some games have, but admire the art and high resolution graphics some contain. Like on Skyrim, I could seriously spend a good hour just admiring the wonderful land of Tamriel, and go to the Throat of the World to watch the Northern Lights at nighttime while getting some wonderful advice from Paarthurnax. Maybe even launch a goat of the side of a mountain when I get bored. In your favorite game, you can life the live you've always wanted to without having to put up with the troubles or boredom of your offline life. But hey, that's just my opinion on it all.     Lost in Life: Careers, Goals, etc.

    I honestly cannot seem to make up my mind as to what I want to do with my life. I am uncertain as to what degree, major, or career to go for. I'm doing this project in Economics which requires me to list three potential careers I am considering for my future and I have to find what college major would be most appropriate for each. I can't even particularize three careers I want to go for. I have numerous thoughts and ideas for multiple majors I can go into and many career paths I could take but I cannot specify three in particular that I would want to pursue. First off, here is every major I have ever considered thus far: Economics Finance Accountancy Business Administration Entrepreneurship Business Management Communication History English/Literature Graphic Design Web Design Software Engineering Geology Meteorology Physics Astronomy Culinary Arts Liberal Arts Engineering Botany Biology Medical Science Psychology Sociology Environmental Science That just about sums it up. The ones that are crossed out are, at this point, hopeless endeavors. Gave up pursuing those years and years ago. The ones that are italicized are ones that have been more profound interests of mine for many years now. Though I'm afraid I may not have the mental capacity to endeavor in those fields due to the immense amount of science and highly advanced mathematics that they may entail (e.g. Trigonometry, Calculus, Linear Algebra, Integrals, etc). Mathematics is indubitably my greatest weakness here. A lack of confidence is also another weakness of mine which may hinder me from pursuing anything in Business and Communication. I do not think I have the leadership-like mentality to handle much in the business field, as much as it intrigues me. Economics, Finance, and Accountancy may also be quite rigorous due the immensity of number crunching and the fact that I am not even sure if I want to actually pursue the careers of such fields. It is practical and it will grant me much pay which is good but will I enjoy it? I don't know. Overall, I feel as though I am struggling to balance out these two factors: Practicality vs. Recreation Many of the aforementioned majors and fields of study I have listed are quite practical. Almost half of what I listed just so happens to be statistically among the highest paying majors in America. Whether it be Economics, Finance, or the field of Medical Science - these are all good paying jobs which would endow me with more than enough yearly income to buy a house and support a family. Sounds great! Sounds ideal. But do I have what it takes? I don't know. I have never been good at mathematics. It was only until last year that I barely began grasping the concept of Geometry and a little bit of Algebra. I've been doing well in my Algebra II class this year insofar that I may be able to pass by the time the school year ends. I am currently going through my last and final year at high school as a senior. With only around four more months remaining. Then that's it. I am done with high school forever. After this ensuing summer will be the start of my first year at a two-year community college. It's all general education and after that, I will have the ability to go to a university of my choice and finish off my remaining two-three years and get a bachelors degree. In what though? I have no idea. After going through much thought, contemplation, and self-evaluation, I realize what my true passions are - I am immensely fascinated with human behavior - whether it be by an individual or group and the underlying reasons for that. I admire reading about history and studying the various cultures and past civilizations. I am also greatly enthralled by the beauty of nature; the mountains, the trees, the plants, the atmosphere and both its tranquil and tempestuous nature. I know. I seem to have the potential to partake in the studies of Psychology, Sociology, History (some particular area), Environmental Science, etc. Yes, both the various sciences and the humanities fascinate me to an extent but the very thought of having to process numbers and complex equations gives me great trepidation. I'm okay with a certain degree of math but I am not sure if I have the potential to master it enough to where I can familiarize myself with its essence and use it as a valuable asset in assisting me to reach my dreamy endeavors. All I know is that I want to experience nature at her fullest potential! I want to live among the mountainous heavens. I want to live in peace and I want my future family to live with me in the realm of nature and experience her beauty altogether. I want to be knowledgeable in the sciences of nature and humanity and know all the various humanities - art, history, philosophy, etc. But how will such endeavors support me? How will I get a job with such passions? I don't want to be stuck in an office counting numbers for the rest of my life but that may be my most reliable option; the most practical approach to life I can take. I just feel so lost right now.. I just want to make my life an adventure; an adventure I can someday look back and remember and proudly reflect on...

MLP and its fervent fandom has lead me to some interesting thoughts since I discovered it. This will be a long, dense post, so eternal thanks to those that put in the time to read it and have an open enough mind not to label and dismiss me outright due to the overwhelming prejudice in modern times against recreational drug users. Please read the whole post before replying, and, if interested, speak your mind. You don't have to worry about offending me, I don't get offended- I take action and mere words on the internet are never worth what I refer to as action. I've seen and heard everything anyway, metaphorically speaking, of course. Let's start with some background about the type of person I am so I'm not really the type to join social movements, or have blind loyalty to a state just by accident of birth locale, (I've always been rebellious and a bit of a trickster- my younger self could have really related to Discord...), so I wouldn't exactly call myself a "brony". Just look at how many of you similar in age and male (usually... there are always the Rainbow Dashs and GI Jane types) are in the military. Don't take this the wrong way as I know the US' disastrous history of senseless wars in the period following WWII up until the present is not the fault of you 23 year old grunts with cutie marks on your Abrams' barrel, but the fault of our corrupt government, but I'm the type of person who if drafted for a war I didn't personally believe in would end up shooting the first drill sergeant that insulted me and stealing an attack helicopter to get away- governments are governments, always driven by greed and lust for power rather than love, none of them are worth dying for in my opinion. Plus sociopaths, the world's most convincing liars, always rise in such organizations because power excites and titillates them and a sociopath good at acting and who understands the masses will always beat someone honest. There are exceptions, but they're few and the few decent politicians usually get assassinated. Read some history if you don't know what I'm talking about. And not your high school textbook approved by the Texas Board of Education that talks about dinosaur Jesus Reagan defeating, single handily, the black and white, good and evil, "commies". Even wikipedia is more reliable than most of the crap they'll spoon feed you and make you regurgitate mindlessly in public K through 12. But digression aside, I have a fondness for the show and how it presents ethical argument. I've come to enjoy the morals and empathetic outlook of MLP in a way similar to why I believe some people enjoy being involved in a religion. I've always stood against the traditional religions, however, because I want my here and now to be good, not wait for an afterlife for which there exists no firm evidence. And I am an unrepentant hedonist (a lover of pleasure for those without a dictionary as their cutie mark)- I love feeling what I want to feel, when I want to feel it, so pyschoactive drugs in other words (besides alcohol and tobacco, the two socially accepted ones have the worst effects and health effects IMHO) and I like my love with lust, not without it like traditional Christians, Muslims, and Jews seem to, at least publicly even if they're doing Space Imperator Ron Paul knows what clandestinely, in the bathroom of an international airport. And I've never liked dogma or things that stand in the way of peaceful science without a REALLY goddamn good reason why (such as torturous large scale experiments on higher animals and humans) and not because someone thinks a tree representing curiosity, knowledge, and innovation has evil apples. My advice- never jump into a decision that could affect you health or future BUT once you find out all there is to know, as far as you can with the time available to you, never let anyone decide for you though listening to advice is useful as long as you are 100% sure you understand the advice-giver's intention toward you, biases, and level of skill or knowledge of that which pertains to that particular fork in the road you travel. I've eaten many forbidden fruits- good things have happened, bad things too, but I never jumped into anything (pyschopharmacology, psychology, history, and literature are my personal areas of expertise) and I grew much wiser and gained perspectives that no one can ever even guess at if they themselves always choose safety over freedom. But one cannot save someone from themselves and humans have ALWAYS loved intoxicants- agriculture instead of hunting and gathering arose mostly due to grain for beer and indigenous religions always seem to have some sort of shaman or medicine man who's a big advocate of whatever the local psychoactive plants and fungi in the area his or her particular people live in are- and is a personal choice really a valid reason to put someone in a cage and quite literally torture them? Is that helping them? Yes, things that endanger others, such as driving under the influence SHOULD be illegal- but adults, in my opinion, have an inalienable right to use whatever in their own home so long as its not hurting others, such as neighbors, the environment, or their children (I personally do not plan to procreate to avoid passing on my congenital depression). SO HOW DO ALL THESE DIGRESSIONS OF THIS RELATE TO MLP AND ITS (TEENAGE AND ADULT) FANDOM? It started with a computer game. I sometimes play a computer game (at least when the electric elves plaster the "updates" on their houses in a manner that does not direly raise the ire of the impetous Windows gorgon and hotheaded demon Video Card kept locked within their keeps by the heroic vigilance of the knights Norton No-nonsense and McAfee McKickass). This videotainment is called Team Fortress 2; the objective of the game is throw bottles of piss (if you're the Sniper, I'm not kidding ) at your opponents who are part of the opposing paramilitary gang of lunatics, Red or Blu (I assume this is meant to represent the Crips and the Bloods... but most of the watersports and weapons fetishists are caucasian including the pyromaniac and obese Russian sandwich assasin/bullet hoarder! In this game you can select an image file on your computer to use as your "spray" (an allusion to the artistic and/or vandalistic, depending on perspective, practice popular with the more territorial of urban adolescents), push a chosen key while your jesu- I mean crosshair is pointed at a wall or the ground and a reproduction of the image appears within the virtual environment. Now forgive me if my following language offends you (I've never understood being offended by mere noise, intent is all that matters, words are just tools; for example the German word "doch" is an intensifying particle of a nuance we didn't exactly have in English, thus the intensifying of the adjective in, "By the beaks of Odin's ravens, she's so fucking beautiful, and in an aesthetic and ethical sense as well as an 'I want to fuck you' sense. I am what I am, not really what television networks would deem a person with a "family-friendly" ("family" seems to be code in the US for "accepting of a prudish paradigm and paying mindless homage to authority"). So for a few YEARS, I had been seeing my little pony sprays in the game which really what-the-fucked me. I didn't care in a "this gender and/or erotic orientation can't like or do that" way, but just in a "this is highly abnormal, this has to be a joke, corporatist media, especially that for children is usually awful". So I thought it was all a big joke and that, much like Mystery Science Theater 3000, the attraction of these fellows to this odd franchise of genitalless talking anime horses had was due to the thrill of being seen to transgress norms by pretending to enjoy something that's "so bad, it's good". One night I was in an odd mood having inhaled many a bowl of fade leaf vapors and more than a dab of an esoteric psychedelic called 4-Aco-DMT, similar to the infamous fungus, and with a boquet rich in the scent of Ayahuasca and synthenesia. So I downloaded (or "pirated" if you're the intangible capitalist sort) the series to try figure things out as usually these ironically "liking" something fads the young blood on the electronic frontier are prone to exhibiting do not focus on any one thing too long. Much to my surprise (besides the theme song...) I genuinely loved it. You need something colorful to watch on psychedelics (and empathogens with any risidual visual effect), but it was the characters that made it for me. I recognize bits of almost all the "good" characters in my better self and the villians in my old self. My new self being the one my girlfriend of five years and thing like raves enhanced with cathinones or mdma someone had made somehow somewhat altruistic, something I would have considered anthema to my wretched existence before drugs. My old old self, due to various neurosis was set on killing himself, but I found meaning in life, felt warmth and happiness when I tried a non-lethal via respiratory depression amount of a substance useful for the least painful manner of self-termination. And so I made a decision that wasn't death, that decision was to explore the full potential of my mind via psychoactives. In full honesty (we're talking fucking applejack shit here nigga) this was the BEST DECISION OF MY LIFE, the intention to intoxicate, the will to go wild, the supplication of your soul to the GODS OF CHEMISTRY AND BIOLOGY, that's right! Euphoria for YOU, YOU, AND YOU OVER THERE! Even for EWE! But seriously, don't give drugs to sheep- one gets addicted, they ALL get addicted. Fucking conformists. Even if anything your DARE type programs claimed was true (which it really, really isn't and, even when it is, usually only for rats taking 1000X the amount I would take of a given substance for their weight) when one has nothing to lose, one figures anything many obviously see as the One True Center of their existence must have some sort of pleasure associated. I did not have a heart attack, become covered in scabies, become subject to an extraterrestrial neurological parasite, become Rob Ford Mayor-at-Large, yet who is somehow on crack's "boy toy", grow venomous invisible claws (as they claimed in DARE) that secrete a caustic poison that turns Russians allergic to alcohol, thus putting our world in the crosshair's of global nuclear fire, or even exchange a simple bout of purely financial fellatio in return for a "fix". I do not even have Mind Herpes! But something even worse happened- I somehow grew a conscience! ME?! The Lord of Lies also known as the DJ "Bee Zizzle to tha'Bub". DO NOT FOLLOW MY LEAD IF YOU DO NOT HAVE SUPERB SELF CONTROL, BTW. The intoxicants I liked at first (my old self) were the mu opioid receptor agonists and dopamine type drugs. This is because they (while you're on them, of course, every drug has some sort of downside and moderation is needed if you want a decent future) make you feel good, but in a selfish way. A don't give a damn what anyone says way for opiates and a euphoric selfish energy I have termed "fight or fuck" mode for cocaine. Even so, I was still actually a hell of a lot nicer than my depressed sober self. You need a baseline level of happiness before you care about anyone other than yourself, afterall. I believe this is where the folk wisdom that you must love yourself before you can love anyone else comes from. I was able to exude confidence, which got me my first girlfriend- technically my first friend since as a child, the lack of feel good chemicals made it impossible for me to get any joy from social interaction (the only thing social I enjoyed was violent revenge if someone tried to bully me for my 'loner' status, anger does actually feel better than the void). Now my favorite neuroenhancements are psychedelics. Psychedelics are, simply put, a sort of emotional magnifying glass, so while opium or cocaine will give pleasure no matter whats going on in your head, emotionally speaking, when you take it, things like LSD and mushrooms can be very uncomfortable as they can force you to face things you do not want to face. But I decided to give a rather forgiving one (and technically legal if you claim not to use it as a drug, which, naturally I DO NOT, NOR DO I EVER DO ANYTHING ILLEGAL. HEIL GROSSER BRUDER!) another go and I decided to focus, this "trip", on something "upbeat" rather than the demons in my head. That's when I first saw MLP FIM. And I have to say... I think most of these horses would get along with me, they seem rather druggish themselves! All of Lauren Faust's stuff seems a bit... too "creative" for sobriety. Gee, those Powerpuff Girls sure have big pupils... and laser eyes. And what gives someone laser eyes? Ecstasy! Chemical X! And don't get me started on the goddamn horses... wait, I'll start anyway, let's see. Firstly, Rainbow Dash is obviously a huge cocaine and/or methamphetamine user. I have mountains of proof for this, here's a quote from Rainblow Dash, "I need to get these clouds spun and then CLEAN THE WHOLE SKY", a meth user "I need to get spun and then CLEAN MY WHOLE HOUSE!", Rainblow Dash (after receiving a wing fracture) "Three DAYS?!", a coke fiend "My dealer is out of town for a WHOLE WEEKEND?!". Complete lack of inhibition, impetuous, obsessed with exercise, competition, and "flying high", an ego inflated like a fat man with a giant family on Thanksgiving, and a love for controversial symbols like the Schutzstaffel BLITZEN BOLT?! Just admit to Comrade Stalin, you gave stimulants to a toy horse and made a cartoon about it. You can tell me Lauren, would I be so goulish as to send you to the Gulag? Would a man twirling a handsome black moustache like this deceive you? And really.... "Rainblow Dash, more like Rainblow CRASH!"? You've got to be kidding me! And CRYSTAL ponies?! Was Somber/Sombra a meth dealer? Is the unicorn king HEISENBERG?? Pinkie Pie... do I even have to say it? LSD. LSD. LSD. St. Anthony's Fire! And she can be seen keeping up with the winged she-Ford, as well as never gain weight from countless pastries. So, obviously, she smokes some crack, and some pot as well, explaining the speed and appetite, respectively. Rarity, as the socialite, obviously has connections as she's able to find crystal wherever she goes. She's Spike's dealer. Twilight is obviously the chemist of the bunch. Probably makes MDMA and hands pills out in little packets at raves with messages about "friendship" on them. Nightmare Moon was a narc! While a strenous life of hard country livin' and hard work drove Applejack to heroin, as well as her eponymous elixer, she drudged on. Though gradually becoming its slave, the sweet nectar of the poppy eases the agony of her labor-broken back. The haze of sedation and the drunkeness from her flask of jack clouds her senses. And seduces her whims... sometimes she just blurts what she's thinking out, she's so out of it, but, mostly, she just doesn't care anymore what anyone thinks, so why go to the effort to lie? Hasn't she done enough work already? This is a poverty wage, not a living one! If she doesn't get a loan soon Charles-Schwab will foreclose on the family farm! And Applebloom's specialness, in desperation, will turn to the stripping profession. Now you know why the South has so many problems- honesty! This has resulted in her rythm-based speech impediment, because as all Good Christians know zeebras are not ponies, because they were stained with the black sin of the Rebellion in Heaven of the Fallen Pegasii in a past life and thus a zeebra's brain is more suceptible to the dangers that Mr. Hearst has maintained are certain to inhabit the intoxicants and vices of Negro and Asiatic choice, please, start helping keep zeebras away from white women due to the irrestible, bestial tendencies of the minority mind beset by drugs! Just like the rave horses gradually learn how not to be a total dick, ecstasy taught me that there was actually something called love that wasn't just lust. 4-aco-DMT puts you in a childlike, receptive state and something about it has given me much more perspective and empathy. Even, sometimes, lasting into sobriety. Cocaine has allowed me to give the finger to fear and pursue what I, not the powers that be, believe in. The balance of different drugs and states of consciousness in one's live's are a bit like you try to show how different personalities in your show can all add positive aspects to the prevailing dynamic of the group relationship. The other thing that made me reconsider my position on the value of friendship was an obituary of Scottish author Ian Banks that led me to wikipedia, which led me to a series of novels regarding an extraterrestrial, interstellar, advanced, post-scarcity, socialist yet with full individual freedom, moneyless, civilization of organic beings and machines guided by creations called Minds that had starships and sattelites and ring worlds and such for bodies and, due to thinking on hyperadvanced AI subtrates in the 4-D realm, could outhink a biological billions of times over in one nanosecond. They also had drug glands. DRUG GLANDS. And were capable, both genders and even people that became plants, of unlimited, sequential orgasms. Oh, yeah and the novels had a lot of good stuff to posit about ethics, I SUPPOSE, and how to guide the more unenlightened into more harmonious and automatically intoxicated relationships, as the Qia Chinese Emperors of 1300 BCE would say. But, like I said, the old socialist that penned those books is dead! And I haven't yet found a drug that lets me talk to the dead AND remember what they said long enough to notate it. So I can't very well ask that bloke for advice, can I old chap? I've honestly never had a friendship I didn't start because I was horny- yeah it's a bit gross, but it's the truth. Maybe I'll try the platonic thing one of these days. Of course it would be easy to make friends in such worlds, but real humans leave much to be desired. I always thought, since the way the rave horses behaved, was most unusual for humans (ones not on empathogens)... or really primates in general- not a very well-behaved group of animals. But psychedelics taught me the value of believing things that are not true just to get certain reactions from your body and subconscious that are beneficial for other reasons. And thus, disdaining most of the world's most popular mythologies like Islam, Christianity, and Buddhism that spurn my lovely hedonism, some of the media I've absorbed (I can't exactly become emotionally engaged with something I make up myself, there is a different joy of creation to that, but it is not act of relationship voyeurism as many videotainments stand), principally said novel series and this obviously drug-inspired horse cartoon, and combined it all into a series of beliefs that I treat, rather than nuts that take shit like mythology as scientific fact, it like "software" and "compatibility" upgrades letting me be well-behaved... most of the time... towards members of a species I don't exactly favor, my 7 cats speaking to that fact, due to humans' apparent inherent disposition to be total dicks to one another at most times, but which represent the only sentients currently available for me to interact with (I don't speak dolphin). But if aliens do ever show up, sorry, but I'm out of here. Even if I have to install a brain slug. Anyway in the books there were a herbivore evolved race of sentients called Pavuleans or something similar, which were nicer on average than humanoids. I used to think morality was completely subjective, but while much of it is entirely cultural (ie what age you are "allowed" to do this or that, what is "perverted", ect) there are some objective elements, I think. I think the core of it is altruism and an intent to make things better, to build rather than destroy, that forms whatever objectivity "good" can be said to have. In extremely "nerdy" terms, I think I've gone from chaotic neutral in alignment to chaotic good. Psychedelics do not teach you about the outside world, they teach you about yourself. They are not useful for physicists, engineers, and the like- but for knowing yourself, what your emotions really are, they are invaluable. Plus if you learn about something sober, examining it while in another state can spur creativity and revelations. MLP is a bit like the morality tales tribal peoples would tell around their campfires to teach one another what it meant to embody whatever that group's ideal was... I'm more a jaguar, a fairly solitary predator, than a horse, but for any worthwhile future to exist we will need all you centaurs to be your collaborative and ethical selves even harder. So comrade socially-conscious narcotic pharmacopia rave horses show wind-movers, how does one create compatriots when all the meeting halls and sacred groves have become disgusting with commercialism and cold modernity? When other males in the society commonly reject necessarry components of connection such as emotional honesty and platonic touching? And when his lover speaks of eviscerating any "other" women out of the vicissitudes of jealousy (my mate is bipolar and thus cannot enjoy the chemical perspectives I can, she is at least partially convinced that I've melted my brain one too many times and thus watch children's shows)? And when others who enjoy magic are often jealous of this wizard's trove of spell scrolls... I could find bats and give them out so that the blind might drive by way of organic sonar and make friends with the blind. But, we CANNOT DO THAT, this is NOT BAT COUNTRY! Oh, yes and the appearance of having "multiple" personalities does tend to dissuade potential comrades, for some reason. Or is it the way I burst intensely out into the environment, pupils dilated, with blood red eyes, blood pouring from my nose and sometimes eyes, and come bounding up like a bat out of hell, pristine in my style with my love of historical Hugo Boss uniforms and a submachine gun at my waist? Or is it the way I glower, how the only happy face I can make looks like the Joker on crack? Could it be? Or is it that I ask everyone to join the narcofreedom revolution against the wicked US world police? Is it that I say those who enforce unjust laws, much like the Nazis condemned at Nuremberg as complicit in war crime by us, deserve whatever violence they receive and how I hoot and holler with word of the death of a narcotics officer on the wrong side of a booby-trapped cannabis grow? Is it the five o-clock shadow? The unswaying gaze? The way I gradually go up on my feet, lean down over whoever I'm talking to, gradually speaking louder, and LOUDER ABOUT HOW THE AUTHORITARIANS ARE RUINING OUR LIVES? Could any of that be the problem? Or perhaps, if I just take enough different kinds of drug at once, my fantasies might just become real enough that I won't need anymore than one friendly sentient from this broken world on the perpetual precipice of disaster and atrocity. I know this though, I am a Culture citizen and I am joining Special Circumstances, the segment of Contact which deals with influencing the evolutions of repressive, primitive, barbaric, and unequal civilizations of all manner of being! If any of you have an intellectual interest in both the good and the bad, as well as the real non-DEA-funded studies behind our collective knowledge of psychoactives consider reading Erowid is purely an educational site, it will not tell you how to find anything. I recently started a writing channel with a focus toward fanfiction, specifically MLP fanfiction but they are intended to extend beyond to other mediums. Did you know that swear words are expletives and activate a slightly more primitive part of the brain than normal language. In fact it’s largely found to relate to the limbic system which involves emotion. This is probably why swear words are so hard to define and why they can be used in a large variety of ways, in a way they aren’t real words they are a verbal expression of emotion. They are a conceptual expression, involving emotion rather than specific definitions. This is also why swear words and expletives can enhance or weaken your writing style. Swear words are a very negatively viewed expletive so I’m going to need to explain some bits and pieces separately before bringing them together, in a family friendly manner of course. Let’s start with expletives and cultural. Expletives say a lot about someone. Such as where they came from, their class, their culture, their values, and the current levels of their emotion. Intensity is something that expletives convey very well. Saying something loudly and swearing loudly feels very different. Even swearing under ones breath can add a level of meaning that is hard to convey with normal words. Let’s look at some classic MLP fan expletives, ponyfeathers and buck. I should clarify that ponyfeathers is used in the show as an expletive, along with several other words. But they are never shown to be swears in official material, only fan material. Buck is not used as an expletive in the show but was initially used quite extensively in fan content. Buck is odd because it’s just changing one letter from an actual swear word but is also a word used in normal speech. Perhaps that is why it’s lost a bit of popularity compared to early mlp fanfiction, it’s really not that different than the existing word and therefore does not speak to the mlp culture. Ponyfeathers, on the other hand, is unique and seems to have grown a bit in popularity as people have come to realize what they can do with it. Ponyfeather’s meaning has been growing with use whereas buck is more limited to it’s real world counterpart and thus ponyfeathers means more to those who use it. It’s effectively become a part of a cultural dialect and if you use this word in the brony culture it shows that you’ve been around the block and probably read more fanfiction which is where I see it used most often. It stands out as something unique to you and your culture and implies a deeper meaning. As for creating expletives for your own world, I find it is a fun and engaging thing to do. I remember when A Clockwork Orange was all the rage in junior high and I remember the colorful and unique language that seemed to entrance many student’s fascination . Adding your own expletives is a way to add something unique to your writing. When deciding what expletives to use for a character or a culture keep in mind that you should have a good variety. I suggest having at least 1-2 expletives, preferably a minor and an intense one, for the quote “six universal emotions.” Many of these expletives can be used with multiple emotions though often the intonation changes, so there is no need to have 12 unique expletives for each character. The six universal emotions described by anthropologist Paul Ekman and his colleagues in 1972 are; surprise, fear, happiness, sadness, anger and disgust. They are considered universal because the basic facial expressions for each are recognizable between all human cultures and they are universally expressed by the blind who have never seen them. Many other emotions are often described in terms of these six basic emotions as well. Now, each emotion can pull from a large pool of words which I will get into later, but swear words are a common factor and many swears can be used to express different emotions. I like to categorize swearing along the lines of Steven Pinker’s work. He describes five types of swearing; Abusive, Emphatic, Dysphemism, Idiomatic, and Cathartic Swearing. Abusive words are used to insult, objectify, or humiliate others. Many abusive words come from things that we fear, that we don’t understand, or that we find dirty such as baby making, death, bodily fluids, and illness just to name a few. Abusive words can also be derived from class or racial differences such as calling someone a piece of s or a fat f’er. Emphatic swearing is generally used when one wants to express that their feelings are stronger than the social pressures exerted on them, when breaking a taboo is a statement in and of itself. I find this type of swearing is generally not directed at anything in particular. For example: loosing a job when dealing with financial woes might cause a person to swear, even if they are around a parent or other respected figure that would frown on swearing. Dysphemitic swearing is where where a euphemism can be used to express an unpleasant concept in a socially acceptable way, dysphemism is an extreme representation of the mundane where a socially unacceptable term adds intensity. EDIT: Honestly this is one I have a little trouble understanding myself. Where abusive swearing is directed at another Dysphemitic swearing is a more relevant to situations where your talking about another where they aren't present. Ala saying "what a #%*$" when talking about someone else. Dysphemism is also usually derived from a difference in social class. A very simple example is the S-word. The S-word has germanic roots whereas defecation has latin roots. At one point, those in a higher social class in Britain used defecation. Using the lesser classes word was socially unacceptable and was used to add a negative connotation. This really has not changed at all and a lot of people from lower social classes use the S-word where those in higher classes use other, more socially acceptable, words. Idiomatic swearing is used in a casual setting. It’s not negative in context but expresses a closeness with other. It’s the kind of swearing people use around friends when it’s unnecessary. I swear around my friends and they don’t care that what I say is taboo because we are friends, we accept each other regardless of normally perceived faults. It shows and enhances bonding. One might also argue that the rebellious phase teenagers are famous for is an expression of trying to find a social circle. A circle who will be accepting and where you can relax the propensity for socially derived niceties, people who you can relate to. People who use words like you do where parents often insist on speaking “properly” even though they don’t always speak properly themselves. This can be used in writing to show distance between a parental figure and the offspring. Even if a parent lets you swear, swearing at your parent or using abusive swearing is not usually allowed whereas friends might turn it into Idiomatic swearing. Cathartic swearing is my personal favorite. Cathartic swearing gives us lalochezia, meaning the relief one receives by swearing. It’s actually been shown repeatedly that swearing lowers our perception of pain, effectively reducing it instantaneously. Swear words make particularly effective cathartic words because if somebody hurts themselves they might only have enough time to utter one word before falling unconscious and so a swear word will catch the attention of others. Its the type of word used right after a sudden but inevitable betrayal and falling unconscious to a poison, or perhaps a soldier being wounded in battle. It’s the cry of a significant other if something stressing or harmful happens. It summons help from others, it’s an immediate action that can actually work toward a solution. Using these 5 types of swear words and similar expletives can greatly enhance characterization in a story and can even help with world building. Perhaps the dwarves and humans in your world get along and the humans make short jokes using idiomatic swearing. By contrast elves might use abusive swearing toward dwarves in the majority of situations. Using this setup properly can create tension in a scene with the utterance of a single word, once the audience has some context of course. Many expletives get spread around between all these social contexts. But they also get spread around between the different emotional states; Surprise, Fear, Happiness, Sadness, Anger, and Disgust. There are some neat tricks to use when we combine different swear words with different emotions. Some good surprise expletives include ow, gah, what, eeek, or even a generic shriek. I find Cathartic swearing is the most common and appropriate for suprised based swearing. But emphatic swearing can also work especially when the proverbial s is going down. In the case of surprise swear words that are also idiomatic they tend to work best when the character is coming from a comfortable setting such as being around friends or in their own home. Have you ever surprised someone only to hear them swear out loud before laughing, I bet you have. People also use idiomatic swearing when bad things are going down and hearing something similar back is comforting. It can also hint that maybe someone really isn’t on the side that they say they are. Thus it implies that someone may be a traitor. Think a cop trying to infiltrate a gang when they get jumped by a rival gang, he will swear with them because if he doesn’t it’s suspicious. Cathartic swearing can also be fantastic when combined with the emotion of surprise. Mostly if some form of pain or potential for pain is involved. In fact this is a good place to point out that cathartic swearing can be used preemptively such as when a car goes over a cliff and the passenger utters a swear even if it would be absurd that he should die. In many example, such as the one I just gave, cathartic swearing can be combined with fear as well as surprise. Fear. Some fear expletives include; no, ahh, gah, screams in general, and muffled or unmuffled cries are all decent options. Again swear words are good. Religious or belief driven words are common. Even something like “You can’t be real, you can’t be real!” works. Repetition is a good way to express fear, especially with expletives and fear induced panic attacks. Another good type of expletive for fear that is more situational is some word or comment relating to what is going on. This is most commonly used with individuals who are very focused or fanatical. Think a comic book villain who has dedicated themselves to defeating the hero, only to have his doomsday weapon turned on him and just before his death calls out to curse the name of his nemesis. This is actually a perfect example of expletives being both personal and emotionally driven, thus abusive swearing is a good option in these rare instances whereas I find idiomatic swearing to be a particularly poor choice. Happiness; For happiness some good examples are ya, yay, wooo, woho, and all right. I promise that those sound better when with a group. But that’s kind of a problem with happiness expletives. Think of the cool characters, the ones who simply smile, or take a kiss from the girl... or guy. A lot of times it’s a side character, or the comedy relief that expresses happiness at the climax when the main character is too tired to care or continue. Sometimes if it’s a cheeky character they will lay out some witty comment. So what other types of communication can people use to express happiness? Well, one good one is laughing. It’s not really a word or phrase but it’s a sound that people make that can be made unintentionally and in the heat of the moment. It’s also universally recognized. Snorting while laughing is an extreme example as well. Emphatic swearing is a good option to express happiness because it emphasizes that the character is so happy that no negative social impact would dampen their spirits. Along the same lines idiomatic swearing is a good choice if a character is sharing an experience with others. You also see emphatic swearing a lot at parties, especially if people are imbibing in inebriation. Idiomatic swearing is also used to express happiness when someone or a character is presenting a joke, such as in a standup comedy routine. They are expressing that they are sharing with you. They are your buddy. This is especially funny when used as abusive swearing directed at others. Think of Lewis Black, he is using abusive swearing directed at some QUOTE A’hole, but with you he is using idiomatic swearing because you are the buddy chum of this “A’hole” [insert picture of Lewis Black]. Sadness; pretty much all swear words work for sadness. Wordless expressions such as cries and sniffling and names of people related to the sadness also work quite nicely. Just don’t add too much energy unless they are also angry or, in rare cases, fearful. Anger; hell, heck, pretty much any swear word or any word with er tacked on the end. Hater, f-er, spooner. When people, and ponies, are angry they tend to yell whatever forms most easily on their lips. Just try to keep it relevant and consistent unless you are showing how unstable they are. Things that relate to broad categories such as race, professions, actions, and body parts are also quite common. Disgust or Repulsion; our old friend the swear word is a fairly standard choice, as are less wordy expletives such as oh, eww, gah and any noise indicating its hard to breath.   24. "To Protect and Serve" Established government. Isn't it a wonderful thing! Since humans moved into the agriculturial phase of civilization where villages started being established on all corners of the globe possibly up to a couple million years ago, the idea of a central government and social hierarcy was just something that was reinforced with instincts, the natural need for there to be a leader in the pack, an 'Alpha' male might be a term that many of you will know. Established government was, beyond all, probably one of the single most important social changes to humans that allowed us to evolutionize and revolutionize social structure and technology that was available to us in order to progress our species down the road of inteligent evolution. But did we get it wrong? Well my answer is that we did form our governments wrong, and that the government system that has been around since well before 3000 BCE is inheritantly flawed. It has taken an information revolution for this idea to be widespread among people, but this is an idea that has moved past conspiracy theorist and heracy in the early 1990's, to being an accepted albeit ignored mentality here in 2009 up until now. The idea, that the government might not be what it says it is, and also the idea that the government is keeping secrets from, and percecuting the population because they have been given that position of power. The dark lords of the Sith are not wrong when they say in Star Wars: "Fear is a great motivator. It will keep the central planets in line." This is the kind of state that we are living in currently. Both us here in Canada, and our brothers down south in the United States. Sit down and think for a little bit, and answer yes or no to the following critera: Are you nervous when an officer of the law comes and talks to you? I will assume for at least the majority of you would have answered yes to that question. We are nervous when a police officer comes to talk to us. Usually when we are talking to a police officer it is because you might have been speeding, or when you ran that stop sign a couple hundred metres behind you. For some of you even the police might be the people who put you into jail at one time, or forced you to do community service. But we do feel nervous if a police officer pulls us over to the side of the road, even when we're sure we've been driving the limit and we have been doing everything right. Much like how a schoolchild is nervous when they get called down to see their Vice Principal when they are in school. The child might not have done anything, and they might know that there shouldn't be anything wrong, but there is always that lingering fear that we accociate with being taken down 'to the office', which is that of punishment. We fear punishment, and we fear the established authority. Why do we fear the police? For what they are which is an establish peace corps created to help protect citizens under a government, they seem to not do a good job at it at sometimes (Of course I am referring to the popular joke, when you don't need them they're everywhere, and when you need them they're nowhere to be found), but they have been in the United States and Canada for a hundred years before the mid 1960's and 70's as a group of people who's primary interest is to protect the citizens of the state, much like the city guard in a 1200's castle village. We keep the police and the city guard as protection. In the 1200's, the peasants and surfs would cultivate the land and give the residing power (usually a lord) the fruits of their labour. This back and fourth relationship of respect and dependancy was quick to deteriorate as the crown nobles began abusing their power position, disrespecting their subordinates and ultimately being some of the worlds biggests cocks. This idea is not new however, and I hold nothing against Dark Age lords because they lived in a particular time where Religious procecution was commonplace and they did not have the kind of mentality that could have given way for widespread cooperation. That mentality only has surfaced in the 40's and 50's. But when the current day police services begin thinking of themselves as a quasimilitary force that exists to enforce the law, they're actually correct. In the 50's we remember the picture perfect idea of a family and a country that was accepted back then. Families lived in single homes with enough rooms to be comfortable and raise a family. Slavery was not present, so the female of the house typically stayed at home and cared for the modern hovel, and the male worked the fields and brought home food. The police walked around on foot and sometimes in patrol cars. They did not have body armour, they usually didn't even carry pistols. They were the perfect police force, because the metro police in major American cities were established not as law enforcement, but rather as a citizen protection force. (Which has since changed.) Lets examine the police force of today's American Police forces. Law Enforcement is now the term that we use to describe the police. To enforce the laws of the land is one of their jobs, and it has now become their primary occupation. Did you know that police officers in most (if not all) states do not have a duty to protect a citizen that is in danger? A couple of years ago my father sent me an article from a respected newstand (which I have since misplaced and it seems that the article has been deleted) which was about a woman who is suing the police department of her local city for not helping her when she was being raped. The story goes as follows: The woman was in her house, and a man entered. She heard him, and called the police. The dispacher called a patrol car to swing by and check it out. The police officer got out of the squad car, walked up to the door and knocked. He waited around for a minute or two, then he walked away, got back in his car, and drove away. While this was happening, the woman was getting beaten and raped in her apartment. During the court case that followed, the woman was not honoured damages for the police officer not honouring his duty to protect her. Because he was not required to render aid to her. During the hearing it was established that the police force in her city had no duty to protect the citizens, and who's only duty was to the reinforcement of state policy. So now the questions are: Since when has the duty of police been to protect state interests rather than citizen protection? Why has the paradigm changed? What does that mean for the citizens? We discussed a very basic question: Why I am I and you are you? Why I am not you and you are not I? Throught many steps we got to the point of discussing children, why they can have some mental problems etc. so I thought it would be interesting to share some information with you, compare it to what happens in the mlp fandom and maybe discuss some points of it. Thing that brought me to think about it One of my close friends told me, a few days ago maybe, an interesting trait - one that are adults missing these days. A small child, when it has something on his mind, it doesn't hesitate and tell it to you without thinking if it might hurt you or not in some ways. I can remember this from my own experience. Boring experience of mine I was young a lot, I don't know what age. I had birthday I think, so I got some gift from my parents, but I didn't like it (it was some kind of mouse plushie), so I told them. Of course they got sad. Dad was still kinda ok, but mum got really depressed... So we went to the supermarket and bought something else. Of course now the first thing that would come to your mind is how bad it was from me saying that, but at that time I really didn't meant to hurt my parents.. I would never do such a thing...... Since that day, I never did it again, even thought I didn't like the gifts. The problem So now you might say "Okay, but it is good that you won't say that again right? You won't hurt your parents anymore." That's right, BUT! The problem is, that because my parents, since that day, can never really know if I really like their gifts so much. (Today I would carefully suggest them to buy me something else cause I know they would be alright with it, but this is just an example what can happen to some people in some cases) So they might do the same thing again - buy me something I don't like. In this case it is not a big problem, but in some other cases it can be when it lasts too long. For example, in very close relationships like love. Theoretical example Imagine you have two people, loving each other, but similar situation would happen. There would be for example a woman. (for the ones who might ask why did I choose women, I used random number generator <0;1) I said if the number is >= 0.5, I will choose man, so I pressed ctrl+t, typed python and generated random number with random.random() function, The result was 0.15488327418102021) She don't like that her husband for example, idk, wants her to go with him jogging, but she is worried to tell him that she don't want to. She might be able to get over it for some time, but after a few months/years, if she won't start to like it somehow, it would be really annoying for her. This is just one thing, but what if there were two, three, four? And now, what if the man was absolutely alright with her not liking it? (there are of course people who would do a disaster from it, I know) If the man knew how annoying it is for her, he would stop it immidietly, but he will never find out. So why didn't she told him? Of course that's because she was worried she might disappoint him. That he might leave her one day if she do it again more times. It's not her mistake. She just wanted to make sure he won't leave her or something, that he won't find some other woman who would accept going out jogging with him. This example is just exaggeration, but it shows the problem clearly. Solution???????? Here comes the first word from the cursed brony phrase: Toleration I know the background story about the phrase, but that doesn't matter. The information, which is hidden in it is very important. You should accept that you might not find an ideal people for a relationship. You won't find ideal friends. (or maybe if you really have big luck then yes, but the chance is small) So here comes the key word - toleration. The idea in brony comunity is good - let people choose what they like and don't laugh at them for liking it, but bronies themself have such problem. For example the eternal discussions about cloppers. (I know that his thing is overtalked, but it is really great example) What is the problem here? People say: "It is not normal to clop to colorful poníes." Yeah, that's nice from you saying that, but why would you care about it? Does it hurt anyone? What is normal? Here might come a handy argument from you: "The naughty pictures are all over the internet." Yeah, that's true, but it has nothing to do with people just being cloppers. You might think, and it may be true, that the more cloppers there are, the more pictures will be created. Yeah, but 1st - not all the cloppers demand others to draw new ones. 2nd - this is not problem about people being cloppers. It's a problem about people not careful about putting their naughty pictures on the internet! That is absolutely differend problem/subject/topic! What is the connection to the original idea at the beginning? It is simple. Some people might like to clop very much, but they would be worried to tell others, but that way, they might not enjoy doing some fun stuff with other people who like it, because each other won't know that the other one like it. That's the same with closed bronies. They are worried others, for example at school, might not like them and remove them from "their group". Unfortunetly, those days, there so many dumb people like that who do so - remove them, just because they are not following the social norms. What is sad is that some people on this forum did the same thing... removed cloppers / gore fans just because they didn't follow unwritten brony norms. Conclusion: So now we know the problem. But we can't make others to tolerate everybody of course, so why am I saying that? It's because I belive most of us don't want to make the same mistake. BUT!
