    Technology iOS or Android

Which one of the two would you prefer and why?
  2. My favorite laptop/computer brands are HP, Asus, and Dell. (Those are the only ones I've owned before)

Mega Thread What are your computer specs?

Tell everyone about your computer (or computers, if you use more than one)! What model is it and what OS does it run? Myself, I work from two laptops: an HP Pavilion dv6-3170ca for school, and an HP EliteBook 8740w for home (mostly) - both run Windows 7 x64. Here's the smaller one: Specs: Intel i5 2.2 GHz Dual Core w/ Hyper-Threading (up to 2.8 GHz w/ TurboBoost) integrated graphics 4 GB DDR3 RAM 500 GB 7200 RPM hard drive 15" glossy screen (1366x768x24) fingerprint reader Blu-ray drive (read-only) And the larger: Specs: Intel i7 1.7 GHz Quad Core w/ Hyper-Threading (up to 3.06 GHz w/ TurboBoost) NVIDIA Quadro 5000M GPU w/ 2 GB GDDR5 VRAM 8 GB DDR3 RAM (high speed - 1333 MHz!) 500 GB 7200 RPM hard drive 17" 1.07 billion-colour matte screen (1920x1200x30) fingerprint reader backlit, spillproof keyboard Both are beautiful computers and serve me really well. I use the dv6 for school because it wasn't a very expensive computer and has great battery life, and the EliteBook is my awesome gaming/do-it-all machine.
  7. Like just the sheer amazement of turning it on. Seeing it come to life. Before you knew about internet trolling, political religious fundamentalist extremeism online. Was pretty much easier time in the early 2000s, i had no idea about those. Now i see it all the time on the internet. Even on YouTube. So yeah. It is kind of nice to be nostalgic or well the more simpler ways of dealing with it. But it is also good that it doesn't create echo chambers either. To sort of be open to adapt to new environments and stuff. But yeah i do love to be nostalgic about the more simplistic ways sometimes. But considering not all here is born in 1991. I am just curious to your first experience?
  8. To clarify, I'm thirty seven years old. I remember the days before the internet was even invented, as well as the early days. Today, kids take super speed internet and zillions of websites for granted. So people of a certain age, what are your memories from the early days of the 'net? Here are some of mine: * Buzz-bong-buzz-bong-brrrrrrrrr... ah, the sound of dial-up. One of the most frustrating noises ever that you were forced to listen to as you waited ages for the internet to load up. Oh yeah, and if someone was on the phone at the time, forget it. You either yelled at your brother/sister to get off the phone or you waited til the line was free. * Downloads that used to take hours. I used to leave the computer chugging away, downloading something, and go and get some lunch. Of course, making sure that no-one was likely to come inside the study and touch the computer or use the landline (see above). I'd also read a book waiting for pages to come up on the screen. Thank goodness for the invention of broadband so we no longer have to waste hours of our lives that we'll never get back waiting for pages to load. * No social media sites; it was message boards all the way, and they were basic as hell. No fancy backgrounds or smilies, just the bare bones. Using chatrooms was the closest we got to social media, and they were always full of creepers and spammers. O_o * Regarding message boards... most were like the Wild West compared to how they are now. For example, one I used to go on was completely out of control with inactive mods and an admin who didn't care. All the users used to flame each other constantly, with an occasional spam or nasty pic posted for a change. That was the worst forum I went on, but most were similar, with only an occasional one that had mods and admins who tried to keep order. Anyone else have anything else?
  9. What is your cellphone's current wallpaper?
  10. A long time ago i came to the realization that bluetooth is pretty worthless for file transfers and things of the like. When i learned the protocol found a nice home with voice transfer i thought to myself, "good for you bluetooth, good for you". A few days ago i was introduced to a bluetooth headset. While utter disgust in bt had me reluctant i tried the headset out with my iphone. I used the Plantronics M155 headset as my coworker told me i need to "experience my phone life handsfree". Hes the kind of ass hat that walks around with the thing in his ear 24/7. But i washed out the ear gel and stuffed it in my ear, the pairing, was super easy and the connection was very clear, and then it dawned on me that all phones should be made this way....hands free connection to the phone is amazing! The headset was also optimized for iOS which made it pairing and using a lot easier than other option from what i understand....so my question to you all, is do you use bluetooth headsets? I would love to hear the good, the bad and the ugly in regard to your experience with bt headsets...
  11. To be honest, I'm very excited for VR, even though I can't afford the graphics card and the new HMDs coming out this year; I'm still going to buy a Oculus Rift DK2 this month. I'm a bit overexcited, personally... What's your opinion on VR (Virtual Reality)?
  12. I have the iPhone 6 atm, but it's got a few issues. I got it as a hand-me-down from my mom. The battery has issues, I think. It also has audio problems because the upper speaker is cracked and broken. Plus, it drops service every so often without the use of wifi. :c I'm going to get my next upgrade soon and get the iPhone 7, which I don't think I have a choice because of my current phone's issues. So, what is your current smartphone? :O

  15. https://www.toonboom.com/products/harmony/features/whatsnew What do you guys think? For those who animate with Harmony, whether it's rigging or frame by frame, these new features look very promising.
  16. Do you use Sublime Text, Atom, Brackets, Notepad++, or another code editor? Why do you like that one over the others? I like Atom. It's similar to Sublime Text, without the nagging (when you haven't bought it yet), and has a deep amount of custom plugins and themes you can install. Plus, it's put out by the guys at GitHub, and I just adore that company.
  17. So everyone probably knows everyone that you guys use mac or windows or even ubuntu (linux). So what is your favorite operating system that you are using ? for me im trying out linux and really liking it much better then windows constant updates.

  19. This is going to scare you, but that is exactly what the truth does. All information is directly from this website: https://www.jscmgroup.com/security-views-blog/2018/8/13/prevalence-of-mobile-surveillance Also, thanks to my college's Executive Director of Information Technology for making me aware of this issue through email. The following is the direct words of the website, all credit goes to them: (Quote begins) "Mobile surveillance apps and programs remain prevalent in the free apps we use every day. This problem mainly affects Android users, however jailbroken iPhones are victims as well. As of this writing, Android represents about 85% of all mobile smartphones sold worldwide. A much larger attack vector for bad actors. The main difference in Android and iPhone apps lies in the marketplaces. Google allows third party marketplaces while Apple iPhones use a store controlled by Apple (called a walled garden). All apps coming through the iTunes Store has to be approved by Apple. This has pros and cons depending on who you ask, but without doubt it gives Apple more control over the security in the apps. A jailbroken iPhone is where the owners perform an unapproved action to unlock the phone from Apple's control. This allows unapproved third party marketplaces and apps to be installed. Many Google users love the open architecture of the Android and its ability to use multiple sources for apps and content. This very openness is what opens those phones up to more security risks. There are a large number of cyber security people that are also interested in privacy. The short reason is that when you share data, use social media, allow location tracking, and allow access to your data you open yourself up to more security risks. You are creating a larger attack surface for someone to steal your ID, manipulate you, be the victim of a phish, or worse. So to me, privacy and security are related. Free apps often come with a large price tag. The ToS, also known as the Terms of Service, often give the app makers access to your private data and other information you may not be aware of. One example is Angry Birds. This popular app collected so much information that government agencies just hacked Rovio instead of hacking users to get information on private citizens, and why not? The plethora of data Angry Birds collected was impressive, all while you were shooting birds at green pigs. Some of these "free" apps can also come with surveillance software bundled in behind the scenes, secretly stealing even more information. After extensive research into current surveillance packages on the market. Here is what attackers can get from your Android phone: Turn on Microphone and Record Audio Track Device Location (Current and Historical) Record Screen Through Applications Like What's App Drop Calls From Blacklists Get Device Information (IMEI, Phone Number, Battery Life, Storage usage, Etc) Record Keystrokes (to steal passwords) Access Videos and Music Read and Delete Text Messages Retrieve Contacts Get Further Instructions So how is all this possible on an Android phone? You allow it. The phones prompt you when launching the app to give it access to this information. most users just click Yes or Okay. So to reiterate that point, this software is not an exploit. You are allowing it. Why do they get this data? So they can sell it. That is how the pay for the apps. You are not a customer, you are the product. They are selling you and your identity. So next time you want to grab a free app, think carefully." (Quote ends) That conclusion was very scary and bone-chilling. Alarming, isn't it? Well for me, it's goodbye to my Android tablet. It won't be missed. This reminds me of Facebook, how people get into your information and sell it online. Looks like it can happen on Android as well. At least we can trust Apple. How can we tell that what was said in the quote is 100% accurate? Look at your Android apps permissions, they say it all. Look at what your Android apps can do to your device. It's stupid when you think about it. Why the heck (I'm really pissed just thinking about it) would your games and apps need those stupid permissions for? Are you going to let Android hold your life in it's unprotective hands? What are your thoughts on this?

Movies/TV How Do You Feel About the "Disney Reboot Revolution"?

So in the past two years I've noticed Disney seems to be on a roll with a modern revolution. Instead of coming up with new fascinating, original ideas, they have decided to revive old iconic classics and remake them in live-action format, with voice casts featuring new and old members (given how some older ones have died and child voice actors are now adults with deeper voices). Some will stick stitch-by-stitch to the original movie's storyline, while others will be spinoffs or reboots centered around one character. Honestly I'm not sure how to feel about this. Given the incredible new technologies that have come into the world of filmmaking, the idea of all those simple hand-drawn 2D cartoon characters being reimagined in realistic 3D seemed very exciting for both Disney and their fans - well, some of them. Others are more on the lines of "Why bother with stories of old? Yeah they were amazing then, why try to make them more amazing now? Like, what's the point? People still watch 80s and 90s movies in 2018 and will continue to do so!" What do you guys think? Is this Reboot Revolution the right way to go for Disney? (The teaser trailer for Dumbo was briefly #2 Trending on YouTube earlier this week) Here are some of the movies that will be revived in live-action: Dumbo (following the original storyline, with some possible twists) A sequel to the 2016 The Jungle Book movie A sequel to the 2014 Maleficent movie Peter Pan (following the original storyline) Tinkerbell (her backstory) The Lion King (following the original storyline) Aladdin (following the original storyline) Cruella (villain backstory/childhood) The Little Mermaid (info is very loose - i.e. voice actors saying that they'd like to play certain characters)
