Hello fellow bronies! Do you remember back in the day you got a game for your PlayStation/Xbox/Wii, and then suddenly you decided to put it into your non-gaming Blu-ray player just to see what's on the disc in terms of data? I somehow tried that on an LG BP200 with my Xbox and Xbox 360 games alongside my Sony Blu-ray players, because they have DVD-Video layers, whereas the PlayStation games are readable on Blu-ray players, but most of the data are in proprietary containers, but on the PlayStation 3, there are some PNG files readable by the Blu-ray player. Nintendo games are unreadable. Feel free to share your sightings here! I've also attached a video of some guy testing out the game discs here:

As we all know, video games are a nice and sweet form of entertainment for many of us. Problem is, there's a good deal of uneducated people who believe the lies created by stupid stereotypes made about gaming, stereotypes such as "video games foment violent behavior", and so on. So, which video gaming stereotypes do you find the most annoying and stupid?

So which do people prefer, Skyrim or Dark Souls? I'm already pretty sure about how this poll is going to go and I think it'll disappoint me but let's find out. Who knows, perhaps I'll be pleasantly surprised and regain some faith in humanity.

Welcome one, welcome all to this thread about everything Metroid -- from the franchise, to its fanbase and even fanart if so desired. Well, Metroid tends to be one of Nintendo's lesser known franchises and I've heard several people say that the series might have more success if it were cross-platform. But yeah, this thread is meant to have a little bit of something for everyone including those who've never even heard of the franchise, let alone know the simplest of things about it. If you have any question at all about the series, feel free to ask and I will kindly answer For a quick visual representation of the series, simply look at the box art of none other than the Metroid game that most Metroid fans consider to be iconic of the series I simply picked the Japanese box art because it looks better than the western one. As for the fan projects that I'm aware of, one notable project would be Harmony of a Hunter which is a fan tribute to the series for its 25th anniversary that happened back in 2011. Basically an album of remixed songs from the games. Another noteworthy Metroid fan project would be Project AM2R which is a fangame in the works. Now have some fan art

So how do you feel about the current trend of micro-transactions in video games with games like EA's Star Wars Battlefront 2 being called out for putting too much weight behind the paywall for progress? I have been seeing this trend for online and offline games more and more recently, especially with triple-A titles, it has always been there but not on the same scale as we have it today. Just how far will some companies push these micro-transactions, one example I can give of it going too far would be in World of Tanks, I saw a bundle being sold for 900 odd dollars for a bundle with virtual tanks (most of which were pretty trash and probably will never use)! Do you think the system should be overhauled, removed or kept the way it's?

ID software. Most known for making such classics as Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, and Quake, you'd have to have lived under a rock for the last 25 years or so to not know of this developer's accomplishments. They were pioneers in game development, creating the legendary id tech proprietary game engine, which many engines today are based off of. Wolfenstein 3D was a simple maze shooter, but it was still something. Then Doom came along and really pushed the fps genre into mainstream attention. The game was also a technical marvel, as limitations of computer hardware at the time made game development harder. But iD worked with the limitations given to them and made a game that was ahead of it's time. The game used various techniques to work with the limitations and the result is a game that is still played and modded to this day. I won't go into the various techniques the game used but look into them, it's really interesting stuff. Really showed how Doom worked with the limitations. Quake. Ah yes, Quake. What Doom did for the FPS genre, as well as PC gaming, oh yeah, iD also pushed the PC as a legitimate gaming platform as well, but what Doom did for FPS and PC gaming, Quake did for multiplayer. More on that in a bit. Quake was also a technical marvel at the time, both graphically and, well technically, it was incredible. 3D environments, models, multiple floors, mouse look, fast paced gameplay, it was an incredible experience. It's engine is still influenced today, most engines used today are based off of Quake 2's engine. Now, multiplayer. This game was revolutionary for online multiplayer. It's fast paced gameplay made for fun deathmatch. And then when Quake 3 came out, it was a standard. It started the esports craze which continues today. Were it not for Quake 3, Cod multiplayer wouldn't be a thing, most FPS wouldn't have taken off, and all the multiplayer focused games wouldn't be a thing. The gaming industry owes a lot to iD Software, and that is why they're the most influential developer. They created an amazing engine, which is still improved and modified, kicked off the online multiplayer craze, and popularized the FPS genre. Their legacy will be remembered for years.

My candidates: Final Fantasy X: Kind of narm, but still well put together. It's kind of weird how it goes through about halfway before you get to the title screen, and then goes through once you start the game. W/e Shenmue: FATHER! NOOOOOOO! Jokes aside, this is probably the most cinematic intro I've seen yet. And in the actually good way, not 30fps garbage. Fallout: Easily the best, by a faaaaaar margin. Excellent music, excellent visuals (I'm a sucker for late 90s pre-rendered 3D), and manages to be short and to-the-point while also giving you plenty of information about the world and its circumstances. Must see:

ZOMBIES! The undead creatures that have been in more games than I can count on one hoof. Well, I can only count one with one hoof, but still! Zombies are everywhere in media, especially video games. From the early days of Survival Horror with Resident Evil to the modern days with games like Zombi and Plants vs. Zombies, there are sooooooooooooo many different games involving these brain hungry miscreants. With such a wide variety of games, one must think, what is our favorite zombie video games? That is what I ask you all today! What are YOUR favorites? It can be any game whatsoever that involves zombies, so have at it! For me, two personal favorites I have always had are Dead Rising (the first one) and Stubbs the Zombie in Rebel Without A Pulse. Dead Rising is a simple yet very fun game that just revolves around the fun (video game fun at least) of being trapped in a mall with thousands of undead and it works so very well. The survivor aspect of the first game is garbage though. I always loved the disclaimer on the box art. Stubss the Zombie is a game where you play AS the zombie! It is a game with tons of comedy and tons of violence, it was the most violent game I played at the time it was released. IT is great fun though and I wish it could be remade at least.

I don't want to offend anyone, but it seems to me that most bronies are very lazy. It seems like smart, successful, hard-working bronies are few and far in between. Most seem like living-in-mother's-basement or video gamer types of people. I would love to be proven wrong, but it seems like all bronies that I've seen IRL are losers. Is this true, or is it just that the better bronies hide the fact that they are bronies?

Im sure most of us have gamed, and have seen an awesome vehicle in the game that you thought to yourself, "If only I had that car for real!" Well, that Car for me comes from the game: Wolfenstein: The New Order, the car being Fredrich Keller's staff car. Sure, its owned by a Nazi, but the car is still awesome! plus, it gets used by the good guy in the game as well! So, what car have you seen in a video game that you would love to have?

I was reading the current issue of Official Xbox Magazine and I came across an article where one of the writers was discussing the use of Audio Logs in games. Those classic things where we click on it, and then we get a series of voice-overs telling us all sorts of different stuff. Could be lore based, could be mission based, but these audio logs serve a simple purpose: To deliver information as straight forward as possible, usually. The writer of this article in particular hates the use of audio logs, as he feels they take up too much time and also deliver information in a very subpar and bland way. He feels it is best to show rather than tell. I can definitely see his point, but I want to know what you all think about this. Do you have any opinions on the use of audio logs in games? Audio logs irritate me to a point. In the end, they are used as a way of giving info to the player, mostly. This is actually quite similar to simply reading a note or book in a game or having an NPC telling you the information. However, I do think that these audio dealios can be overusedios. It seems some games rely on these as an 'easy' way to deliver the information, when in some cases it would actually be more effective to give visual representation of what they want to get across and when they go the audio route, it can be a missed opportunity. I also prefer having an NPC telling me info rather than a simple audio thing. That is basically preference, I feel it helps me connect to the world of the game more.

DLC or 'downloadable content' is something that can either be done incredibly well and add to a video game in many ways or it can be a corporate tool to get more money from gamers. With this in mind, do you all have a particular favorite DLC's for a game? Or how about your least favorite? There are plenty to find for both categories I am sure. You can also just say what type of DLC is your favorite/least favorite. One of my favorite pieces of DLC has to be The Stone Prisoner from Dragon Age Origins. It gave you many new quests if I remember, a whole new awesome character to have in your party and other additional content, that is how it should be done. The DLC for the Elder Scrolls games are way up there for me as well. Huh, two western RPG's doing DLC right, weird. Both of these games have DLC that actually enhance the experience and lengthen it too. A least favorite of mine has to be the map packs for Call of Duty. Take the newest entry Advanced Warfare as an example. In it's map packs, you get: One zombies map, 4 multiplayer maps, and one new gun. All for $15. Given that the multiplayer maps split the community and that one gun is just that, one gun, these packs are not worth it. This highlights two types of DLC that I cannot stand; Content that is obviously ripped from the base game and sold to us later and DLC that costs a chunk of what the original game costs and does not have the content to justify the price point. That is happening a lot lately. Also, season passes are a pet peeve of mine.

Expanding on the recent theme of the last several entries... I've been meaning to tackle this issue for years, and am just now getting around to it. If you're a gamer, and a regular denizen of the various interwebs, then you've probably heard the name Anita Sarkeesian at some point. (In fact, you're probably sick of hearing that name.) I'm not sure how relevant this issue still is, or if it's drifted away from the spotlight, but for some time, Sarkeesian was making quite a bit of noise about sexism and the misrepresentation of women in video games. If you're unfamiliar with Sarkeesian, it will probably only take about one minute of watching her content on youtube to know all you need to. In short, she seems to believe that if a man finds a woman physically, sexually attractive, in any context, under any circumstances, then it's sexist and wrong. (Perhaps a little bit of an unfair generalization of her, but it doesn't seem too far from the mark.) She makes quite a lot of displeased noise about women being depicted as sexual objects in games, and offered as rewards and such. Now, I happen to agree that there is indeed some problems with sexism in video games, but the solution is not what Sarkeesian would propose. (If Sarkeesian got her way, she'd probably just destroy any hint of sex appeal in games.) Let's be blunt and get straight to the point. Let's talk "bikini" armor, or "sexy" armor. Let's talk about this: Is it wrong to have scantily clad women in fantasy games? Or other games? (Mostly fantasy games.) Is it wrong to prominently display sexuality and sex appeal this way? Is it wrong to have women wear a ludicrously impractical metal bikini for armor? If you've read my previous blog entry, you can probably guess that my answer to all of these questions is a resounding no. It's not wrong. I'm one of the most sex positive people you'll ever meet, and a huge proponent of a healthy celebration of sexuality and sex appeal, and beauty in general. This may sound shallow to some, but I don't see it that way. It's just another wonderful aspect of life to enjoy. An appreciation for this part of life doesn't automatically mean an unhealthy objectification of people. In fact, I submit that appreciating and enjoying sexual beauty, and sexually objectifying people are mutually exclusive. I can enjoy beauty and still look at people (or even video game characters) as complex individuals. Back to the bikini armor--Anita Sarkeesian makes the assertion over and over again that such things are not armor. Well, no sh*t P.I. Rarity. Who said it was? Of course these revealing swimsuit outfits aren't going to protect characters in battle. It's a GAME. It doesn't have to be realistic. Why can't we have some sexy outfits if we want 'em? What's the harm in that? Is is really so evil? Well, according to Sarkeesian, you bet your sweet patootie it is. (Oh, whoops. Shouldn't have said patootie. That's evil and sexist, too.) And Sarkeesian's answer to the question, "what's the harm?" is that is will create a society full of men who don't know how to respect women. We're gonna be a horde of Dothraki, that's what it is. Well, it's not true. And I'm going to give the same response I do when it comes to children with respect to NSFW internet content: just comes down to parenting. Watch what your kids are playing, teach them properly, demonstrate how to treat women in real life, both by your words and by example, and don't let your children play mature games until they demonstrate mature behavior. Don't blame your problems on games, and don't expect the ESRB to do your job for you, and definitely, (and I can't stress this one enough), definitely don't take away my goddamn sexy games because you don't like 'em!! I love me some sexy games, and I love me some sexy characters, and I don't see anything wrong with that. I respect women, just as I respect all people, I don't mistreat real women, and I don't objectify them, and yet I still enjoy a scantily clad fantasy game character, a phenomenon that Sarkeesian would probably deem impossible. So, I stated that there is a problem. And here it is: The problem is that we often have sexualized female characters in revealing outfits, but their male counterparts are always these giant tanks wearing so much armor that they look more like a vehicle from Mad Max: Fury Road. This is a double standard, and it's unfair. (Unless you actually have a valid, story based reason for it.) So, what's the solution? Well, it's not to cover up all of the females, as Sarkeesian would like. It's....*drumroll*....yup, you guess it! Let's show some skin on the males! Offer equally revealing, equally sexualized male variants. I'm arguing for equality, but not equality by censorship. I argue for equal celebration of sexual beauty. Depending on the game, it could also make sense to offer "real", practical armor and "sexy" armor for each sex, and let players choose what they want. Now, revealing armor and sexy outfits don't have a place in every game. It all depends on the game. I don't want revealing, silly armor for my Spartans in Halo. Some games are serious business, and it would ruin the story to have impractical garbs. Skyrim was another game that made the right choice to have practical armor. But Final Fantasy games?! Kingdoms of Amalur?! Heck YEAH! Sexy all the way! Just offer both for players who want it, and offer the same types of outfits for male characters. Now, if it seems like this idea wouldn't fly, I'd like to take a moment to point out this: I mean, these guys are in armored bikini briefs, for Celestia's sake. They're heavily sexualized. Now, maybe it was actually more practical for them to be able to move, but the point is that we just need more options like this for male characters in games. But too often, we see the armored bikini goddess, as in that first picture, and the male tank, as in the second. Just, y'know, take a lesson from 300. It's not rocket science. God of War did it. Have realistic attire in games that warrant it, have sexy attire when applicable, offer both when feasible, and offer equally revealing outfits for males. Incidentally, I'd like to place Warframe on a pedestal for managing to simultaneously be the most equal, least sexist, and (in my opinion) sexiest game ever made. It is possible.

Between "Sim City Creator" for Wii and "Destroy All Humans: Path of the Furon", it has to be "Path of the Furon" mostly due to the fact that it effectively killed off the Destroy All Humans franchise entirely. It was originally going to release in winter of 2007, but got delayed to December of 2008. When I finally got my 12 year old hands on a copy, placed it into the Xbox 360 (PlayStation 3 version got delayed due to "development issues") and started playing for a bit, a dark, sinking feeling began to grow inside of me, as I slowly begin to realize why the game was delayed for so long. The game itself is without a doubt the most bug riddled, unpolished game that I have ever played up to this day. Characters gliding across the floor, dialogue getting cut mid speech, to numerous crashes, I've never felt so betrayed before at that time. It's probably the first game I've ever been hyped about, only for it to be a complete letdown; 50$ down the gutter. Rip Destroy All Humans, and rip THQ.

These days, with many games comes patches and update. The age of the internet allows devs to add more to their game post release or even make fixes to things they missed during development, sometimes to a terrible degree. This thread can be for telling us about anything patch or update related. Any games you play that have been updated recently? Did it add or fix anything? Or did it do the opposite and break stuff? How devs do that is beyond me. Are there any games you play that actually are in need of patching up? Anything related to these things can be brought up. For me, a game that was desperately in need of patching was Killing Floor 2 on Xbox One. The game suffered from crashes and random disconnects for no reason and this went unaddressed for well over a month. Then they added the Halloween update, which was nearly 13gb in size and it seems to have fixed most issues. Most. The crashes are fixed, which, that's the most important thing, but there is an achievement that still doesn't work at all and some inventory loading issues sometimes, though logging out and back in fixes that. The update added new items and weapons as well, so despite a couple of missed things, the update is highly appreciated.

Fairly simple question here. There are plenty of options when it comes to purchasing games. Major retailers, resell shops, online retailers or simply digital. With all these options, where do you buy your games? Could be any mixture of these of course. I mostly buy my games digitally from Xbox Live. When I don't do that, I either go to Walmart, rarely Gamestop (I feel better supporting Walmart almost. :\) and if I want to go to a resell shop, there is one in Evansville that is quite good. I like to get DS games from there. :3
