Everything related to Greek Mythology in MLP

I wish to touch multiple issues with this so mods... bear with me even if the tittle doesn't touch all subjects.

So... let me say a few things about myself first.

My name is Dennis or Dionysios and i come from Greece. Unfrotunately while i have found some greek bronies upon the Internet i unfortunately haven't stumbled upon any of you who share the same nationality with me. I litterally feel like i'm the only greek guy out here. It's seriously baffling... maybe Mlp isn't that popular in Greece? Hmmm....

In any case let me just start to say something here. I have noticed some people here on the forums mistakenly quoting popular greek myths just from the way they have seen them from movies. I sometimes feel that shows and movies litterally KILL the myth they choose to depict. That's not just the myths though... that's history as well. Let me just say an example... The "300" movie were supposedly 300 stood up against the Persian army... was a joke... I'll have you know that there were actually over 1400. I will not delve more into the subject because i could talk hours about this i'll just say out of 1400 we glorified the time-old tradition of 300 war mongering spartans. That is all.

Now back to MLP i have seen that MLP has taken a quite... better view of the mythology. In any case it at least respects and is truthful to the myth even if it changes the attitude and it's approach on the myth. So far i haven't seen a case of inaccuracy as far as i'm concerned.

So question number 1:Do you feel like MLP has respected the mythos and general legends it has touched?

That being said i see many similarities with the non-directly referenced things in Mlp. For example see this...

In Greek mythology, Nike (Greek: ???? , pronounced [n? ?k??], meaning Victory), was a goddess who personified triumph throughout the ages of the ancient Greek culture. She is known as the Winged Goddess of Victory. Nike is the Goddess of strength, speed, and victory. She is a symbol of how fast the news of victory can travel and the fastest deity in ancient mythology.

Notice the similarities anyone?

Also did you know? Luna's Original name was Selena

Great similarities i might add...
Or perhaps Twilight as Athena with her owl Owlicious?

Or Applejack as Demeter?

Fluttershy as Artemis?
http://himawari-chan.deviantart.com/art/Artemis-Fluttershy-266662496
Or Pinkie Pie as Dionysos?
http://himawari-chan.deviantart.com/art/Dionysus-Pinkie-Pie-266654146
Or... well perhaps i don't think it fits her but Hermes Rainbow Dash?
http://himawari-chan.deviantart.com/art/Hermes-Rainbow-Dash-266277121
Or Aphrodite Rarity?
http://himawari-chan.deviantart.com/art/Aphrodite-Rarity-266278493
Or Octavia/Lyra Apollo?
http://twiddlechimp.deviantart.com/art/Octavia-the-Ponyess-of-Music-244006276

I personally see similarities of Queen Chrysalis to Metis who is a titaness shapeshifter of cunning and wisdom. Or perhaps Proteus "God of Elusive Sea Change" who was capable into transforming anything!

Question two:What figures do you see resembling acnient greek gods and why? Or in fact do you see them resembling other pantheons? If so then why...

So three... i thought that MLP had stopped referencing Greek Mythology for quite some time... then comes Orthros... allegedly as the myth says brother to Cerberus two-headed dog. Well i was mistaken... it seems the Greek Myth influence is still strong with this one. There are a lot of things that could be encountered... like Scyla and Charibdys or new species like mermaids, or i don't know... anything! So here comes my third and last question...

Question number 3:Do you believe that we will see more greek mythology references? Which are the ones you would like to see? What kind of creatures from said mythology would you like to see?

LET THE FUN.... BEGIN!!!

Note to mods... i know there might be threads about this topic but they seem to be like a year or more old so i figure it's about time i refreshed this.

First off, in regards to the 300 thing, there's always going to be horrendous inaccuracies with stuff like this.  Often times the common, inaccurate myth is just more fun.  I don't think anyone is taking these things literally or thinking that the movies are in any way accurate.  We know it's just entertainment that is very loosely based on some actual events or myths.

As far as MLP goes, I absolutely love the Greek mythology stuff thrown in there.  Don't really care if it's accurate.  You say it's pretty accurate, so that's nice.  I just think it's so awesome to have this kids cartoon with some pretty epic Greek mythology in there.  I never expected to see things like Cerberus on My Little Pony.  So awesome.

Sadly some do... i saw someone thinking Prometheus was the creator of manikind... probably from the movie Prometheus prequel or whatever to Alien. Being a myth geek i proceeded to correct him... Sure it might be more fun to have myths this way but when people take the myths from 300 seriously i am inclined to ask... you seriously belief a commercialized, changed myth? Glorifying the wrong person thinking there was accuracy in the movies?

As someone currently studying Ancient History at Masters level, I'm delighted to see this post :) I really like the parallel between Athena and Twilight/ Owlowiscious. I would love to see Scylla as she has become a large topic of my current dissertation, I would find it awesome to see her cameo in MLP :)

By the way, the 300 thing irritates me too ;)

@,YAY! Well then in any case we could debate which myths could be implemented into this. In any case i am a huge myth geek with an obsession almost in greek mythical correctness. I usually use them as my headcanon in changelings. Oh btw can you guess who my avatar is? :D

@, I would love to see the Atlantis myth integrated with a sea pony culture, I would prefer it if they keep the element of hubris in relation to its sinking :D I love the story of Daphnis and Chloe and I would love to see it as 'an old mare's tale/tail'. I'm glad to hear that, I have a similar obsession stretching to the (IMO, less interesting) Roman world, my knowledge is by no means complete and I'm always looking to learn :P It always amuses me watching Disney's Hercules *cough*Herakles*cough* and seeing Zeus as the loving family man and Hera weeping over 'her son' ;) I'm sure that and far more also peeve you but that film could spark an essay ;) (I do love it though) Now that I'm able to read a bit of ancient Greek (not perfectly by any means, but a year of intensive study has opened my eyes :D ) I am finally able to access myth in the original language :)

I see scales and a sword, I'm going with Themis?

@,Wait you mean Daphne the one who was chased by Apollo? And Chloe? I don't remember right now...

BINGO! :D Btw can you see the similarities i pointed out with Nike and Rainbow Dash? They do really look alike!

@, no Daphnis is a guy :P  They are the titular characters of a pastoral 'romance' by Longus in the 2nd Century AD :) I always loved its simplicity and the change in tone from women being spoils of war :D For MLP some elements would need to be toned down of course :D

Definitely! I thought it was very apparent visually with her Gala attire too :)

@

As a PJO fan, I can only suspect that you're a demigod.

Give Percy a hug for me.  :P

But in all seriousness, I think the show respects the myths an awful lot, actually it's one of my favorite aspects of the show.

@,Oh i haven't read that one. Hmmm

yes indeed the thing on her head really helped.

If i have more than two daughters expect the second one to be named "Dorothea"... it's ancient greek as far as i remember and it means "Gift from God".

@,Hmmmm i myself find many common things with Dionysus the god of wine and reverly. I am a very "people's" person and my grandfather has wine vineyards i used to go during the summer and harvest. It was tiring but awesome! Oh and also i am a fan of Dolphins and swimming and dolphins were Dionysus favorite animals.

I don't... exaclty like Persey Jackson as i think it was more of a special effects movie but i have only watched the first movie so i can't really say much.

Uhg. Don't even mention the movies. The movies are a gods forsaken mockery of my childhood, and therefore must burn in the fields of punishment. This is a general fan reaction to the movie:

@, I would recommend it for sure! Its one of my personal favourites :)

Great name :) As far as I'm aware thats a correct translation!

I would love to name my child with a classical reference, obviously depends on the willingness of my future partner

You make some fine points, but I strongly disagree that Fluttershy even remotely resembles Artemis. Artemis was far from the doormat that Fluttershy is. She even fed a guy to dogs for watching her bathe. Note also that Fluttershy seems very pacifistic and loves animals, while Artemis, although a protector of wildlife, was the goddess of the hunt.

But Twilight as Athena... That explains a lot...

@,Well yes i don't quite agree on that but if you ask me she would resemble Gaia... i just found the pic picturing her as Artemis and posted it. Doesn't  mean i agree with it.

@@Lordav, Indeed they do look alike... and as a bonus i might add my own oc has been drawn wih lion-style helmet and royal guard armor.
