Now that I think about it, Realm's work is VERY inaccessable to a ton of people, but some of the songs are just WORTH getting over it.

Oh yeah, that one's pretty popular. The first AA song I listened to was "The Pursuit of Vikings", which got me into them. It also was the first song by them I played on the guitar. Really, tuning the standard-gauge strings on a 24.7" guitar to B standard does not work well. Very simple (and thus fun at that time) to play though!

 

I can't say I've listened to Havok yet, but I'll look them up. And Mastodon's a pretty cool band too. Very sludgy, and they've got some cool-ass cover art on their 2011 release.

I can't say I've listened to Havok yet, but I'll look them up. 

 

Burn is a good album, lengthy at times though. Contains most of my favourite songs. (CATEGORY OF THE DEAD, TOO BROAD FOR WORDS!!!)

Time Is Up can be better songwriting wise, but the mass-manufacture feel from the production kinda dampens the awesome.

Point Of No Return is pretty cool, the two new songs being awesome, but the Arise cover is SOOOOOOOOOOO bland. And the Raining Blood cover isn't very special (was an iTunes bonus for Time Is Up).

 

And what ever you do, stay the fuck away from Pwn 'em All. No questions asked, just do it.

I know, I love The Hunter that was one of the best things they ever did.  My Favorite song by Mastadon would have to be Oblivion though.  Also you confused my brain for a second there by saying AA.  This is due to the fact that I listen to an artist called Attack Attack (AA).

One of the reasons I think death metal isn't taken as seriously by people outside the metal community like black metal or doom is because of that whole "SEE YOU IN THE PIT" mentality. While there's more of that with -cores, death metal also has that big thing around your metal-dick size and how br00tal your last pit was. Also, dat excessive gore.

 

Don't forget about the generalization of misinterpreted genres being an incoherent mess and what the attitude of some fans seem to be! =D

I like these songs a lot. Omnium Gatherum's record "Beyond" has done a lot of good stuff for melo-death this year, to the point where it detaches itself from being "death" metal. It's much more just melodic metal.
