I know we don't have much information. Seeing as we have 4 games in the franchise. But the only clue and validation we have is Diddy Kong Racing. Only Banjo appears in that game and was involved in stopping Wiz Pig. Kazooie is a female, as a kid aside from her laying eggs. She just came across as a wise cracking male bird. Rare Ware obviously won't tell us. How do you think they met? Banjo is a part of the Mario universe. Because Mario and DK are in one universe. Banjo raced with Diddy, so there you go.

I've always assumed it was just Banjo saving Kazooie from being eaten when she was a little breagul.
