Which one was newborn cuties from? Cause THAT was the worst one.

I mean good GOD the mouths didn't move, there was even LESS animation than in G3, and just...youtube it if you haven't already seen anything from it. And I apologize in advance too.

I have only seen the g1 specials, and some g3.5 straight to dvd stuffs.

And g3/g3.5 has to be my least favorite. It is the embodiment of commercialism, existing only to sell toys and having plot based 100% around what toysets you need to buy. It is a warning to all pony fans, of what the series has been, and what it can become again.

I think we could all agree that G3.5 is the worst generation. Seriously, look at how frightening this face is...

It's obviously G3.5. The animation style is just... so terrible!  :eww:

Dude. EVERYTHING about that gen was TERRIBLE. The animations probably it's biggest fault though. Especially the "crawling" animation. Which seemed more like someone broke their back legs and they're desperately trying to move still.

G3.5. G3's garbage in its own right and deserves the bashing it gets.

  1. Characters: I heard these characters have character. But they're really one-dimensional pieces of cardboard with voices differentiating them. (Actually, I take that back. Calling the characters cardboard is an insult to cardboard.)
  2. Writing: Each and every conflict is absolutely shallow and implies that young girls can't handle plausible, real, deep dilemmas. There's no sense of pacing, relying on plenty of bullshit to fill in the allotted time. Most of the songs are not well composed and can be really irritating to listen to because of its one-dimensional lyrics, repetitive and drawn-out verses, and lack of necessity.
  3. Theme: The biggest reason why G3 is so factually awful. It feels and behaves like a toy infomercial and simultaneously treats the audience like crap through the overly shallow themes alone. The concepts create the epitome of a "feminine" show in the most stereotypical way possible. If you want your kids to be shown some respect through media, make sure the themes are nothing like the ones from G3.

G3.5 takes everything from G3 (especially the characters and writing) and worsens them, the biggest degradations being the animation (G3's biggest strength) and visuals.

Lunar, please don't go out of your way to make '80's Pony' feel bad... :/

But I digress, in my opinion, I would say G3.5 is the worst. I really do despise it - but that's just my opinion, if you like G3: go ahead and watch it.

Looks like it's pretty unanimous.  G3, or 3.5 (I don't really know the difference.)  G1 is very old fashioned, primitive, but respectable.  The pilot of G1 actually bears resemblance in plot to the pilot of FIM.  But, from what I can see, imho, G3 has no plot, and no characters.  It really is the show about nothing.  They bake cookies, they have a party, they bake a cake.  That's it.  No conflict, no stories.  And every pony is identical.  Different colors, but identical looking, and basically the same voices.  I would describe them as empty shells, devoid of all personality.  That said, it's probably not fair of me to really judge, because I haven't watched more than about 10 min of G3 lifetime total.  That's all I could stomach.  Apologies if I offended anypony who likes G3 as well.

Gen 3/3.5 for me as well.

Like everybody else has said, generation 3 was just all around terrible.  The writing was horrible, the plots were horrible, the characters were horrible... everything about it was terrible.  And the animation.... dear God the animation.  I don't even know where to start with the animation.  If you haven't watched it, go take a look at the gen 3.5 episode over two rainbows.  They actually were so lazy in animating it that they decided to not have the mouths move when they spoke in that episode.  Who does that?  What company honestly makes a cartoon and cares so little about the quality that they don't make the mouths move.  Just flipping horrible.

The only good thing about generation 3 was that if it wasn't as horrifyingly terrible as it was, Hasbro might not have called in Lauren Faust to try and salvage the franchise, and we might not have gotten FIM.  So thank you Gen 3 for being so horrendous that they had to hire someone to try and save the franchise from your horribleness.

Can someone explain the difference between G3 and G3.5?

This is more complicated than it really should be, unfortunately.

Part-way through G3 there was a management decision to slice the franchise down to just seven characters, this is called 'Core 7' by the toy collectors. The toys were redesigned at that time, but the animations didn't change style to until a year later even though they also got sliced to just the seven characters.

Then, a short time after the animation style changed for Core 7, it suddenly shifted *again* and far more dramatically. All the pegasi suddenly became flutterponies, and the bobble-head became a lot more emphasized. But in this case the toy line didn't change at all. It was all the animation. Usually this is considered the actual G3.5, but there isn't complete consensus.

And the final bit put out for G3.x was a pair of webcasts using rather primitive Flash animation. In these the characters were redesigned again as babies. Luckily it only lasted for the two webcasts. MLP:FiM started broadcasting the next year.

"Way too much girly stuff"? *shakes head* FIM is plenty girly.

Nevertheless, I have had very limited exposure to the older generations. I did not really know what MLP was until ten years ago (I'm sure I had exposure to it prior to that, but it never got through to me. xD). Even so, I had no idea cartoons for it existed, I thought it was just a toy line.

Needless to say, I can not given an informed opinion on this. I don't like the designs of the older ponies within the shows anywhere near as much as FiM (although Generation One has its charm), but I can't judge them on that, and in fact, from what I've seen I like the toys from the earlier generations a lot better.

Well, my experience to the older generations is limited. I watched "Return of Tambelon" so I can say that G1 at least has some VERY interesting concepts and ideas. I also get what people say about G3/3.5 being horrid. Heck, I agree. I watched a few episodes from that era.

However, I'll make a good case for G2, or My Little Pony Tales. Heck, Tommy Oliver does that for me here.

This...really makes me question the morals that this era of the show presented.

Hmmm, that would be G4 for me.

Let's talk about the toys first; because My Little Pony is a toy franchise. Honestly, the G4 toys look nothing like ponies other than them having four legs, and this goes for both the G4 show and the toys. On the toys, they have about an acre of forehead, mouse ears, tiny nub unicorn horns, a very small variety of cutie marks, large eyes were their cheeks should be, ONE pose for all of their basic brushables, stupid variations of the toys (Example: equestria girls and the goth toys), the accessories are bad and most of them don't even fit on the pony, and the toys in general are super tiny. As if this toyline was not lazy enough, Hasbro often reuses G3 Ponyville accessories for the line. Oh yes, Hasbro. Don’t think I don’t recognize them.

Now, onto the show. First things first, the morals with this show can be dull. In all honesty, the only good memorable moral I can think of is the one from "Equestria Games"; some others can be pretty dull and forgetful. My next problem with the show is that the ponies can be pretty bratty at times. I know what most of you are thinking: "but 80s Pony, that adds to their character!" Even is that's true, you don't need to be bratty to be a good character, take Fluttershy for example. Honestly, I can think of over 20 moments in the show were the ponies were rude -for no reason- to each other! I'm also not a big fan of flash animation, but I have to admit, the FIM animation can be pretty functional and consistent, which is a good thing; but for me, having good animation doesn't automatically mean it's a good show. The mane 6 are sort of cliched characters. Hmmm, the fashion, the nerd, the athlete, the shy one... Where have I seen those characters before? That doesn't mean that I think they are all bad characters (sometimes they are), I'm just pointing that thought out. Lastly, I do think that they should move the ponies out of Ponyville and have them go on more epic quests, because the whole “learning Friendship Lessons in Ponyville” thing is getting very stagnant/boring.

I'm not saying I hate G4, it's just that G4 is bad when compared to the other generations in my opinion.
