Rules For Roleplay

So you're interested in roleplaying? That's wonderful! This thread will get you pointed in the right direction.

Beyond the Global Rules, there are specific rules for roleplaying on this site. These rules are primarily there to streamline roleplay (RP), making it easier for people to get involved and actually start roleplaying.

A few important definitions:

  • OOC: Out of Character (Anything you wish to say to another player outside the context of the roleplay.)
  • IC: In Character (What your character is doing, seeing, or experiencing. This is pure 'storytelling'.)
  • DM: Dungeon Master (Also known as GM or Game Master, this refers to the person running the roleplay; usually the person who started it.)
  • RP: Roleplay

All RP threads must have a corresponding OOC Thread: Separating OOC (Out of Character) and IC (In Character) threads are meant to keep the roleplay flowing freely without constant (and in some cases very involved) interruptions.

No OOC posts in an IC thread: To expand on the above rule, a post in an IC thread that is nothing but OOC content is not allowed and is subject to deletion. The basic premise for your roleplay should be posted within the corresponding OOC thread. Likewise, all OOC discussion and debate should be restricted to the OOC thread, leaving the IC thread for nothing but roleplay posts. This is the reason behind having OOC threads in the first place.

  • An exception to this rule: some RPs are organized as more traditional tabletop games with action resolution systems, or choose your own adventure style roleplays. For these kinds of RPs action resolution posts are allowed in the RP itself, as long as they do not drown out the roleplaying aspect of the thread.

Threads must link to their corresponding OOC/IC thread: In order to keep things organized and in sync, it is required that players include a link to their OOC thread in their IC's thread first post, and a link to their IC thread in their OOC thread's first post. This allows other users who are interested in reading or joining your roleplay to quickly and easily locate the corresponding threads.
Any threads which do NOT do this are subject to being locked until the links are properly placed, after which you may approach the RP staff, listed below to have them unlocked.

Stay on-topic, even in OOC threads: An OOC thread is the place for players to discuss the Roleplay in which they are taking part in, not hold normal, everyday conversation. If you wish to converse about topics not related to roleplay, please take your conversation to a PM. In an effort to keep things on-topic and organized, please report off-topic discussion in OOC threads so that we might keep them from becoming de-railed.

No NSFW Content: In line with the Global Rules, explicit content is strictly forbidden. This includes, but is not limited to; sexual content, excessively vulgar language, descriptions of excessive gore, intentionally erotic descriptions of a characters anatomy or actions, and so on.

  • Due to the inherent NSFW nature of these properties, the following creepypastas are not allowed as RP topics: Cupcakes and Rainbow Factory.

The removal of the NSFW aspects of these fanfics to make them conform to this forum's rules while still having them be viable as RP topics has proven to be not possible. This list will be updated as new inherently NSFW properties arise.

Respect the DM's wishes: Self-explanatory. If a fight breaks out between players over who gets to keep what or do that, the whole roleplay can fall apart. What the DM says goes, for the sake of maintaining an authority figure in every roleplay. (A legitimate, serious concern can be reported).

Respect other RPer's: You won't always see eye to eye with other RPer's. If you find yourself disagreeing with another member, approach the issue with a cool head. If it gets to the point where you can't deal with another member, report them and use the ignore function. It's there for a reason.

Do not post in an IC thread without permission from the DM: Ask in the OOC thread whether or not you may join a RP before leaping in. Make sure the DM okays your joining before you post. This rule applies to all roleplays, regardless of whether they are marked Open or Private. Private roleplays are usually limited to only a specific list of posters. An Open roleplay may be looking for new players, however permission from the DM is still required before you participate. Similarly, if you are asked to leave a RP by the organizer even in an Open roleplay, do not continue to post. Posting to RPs is a privilege, not a right.

Do not God Mod, Powerplay, or Metagame: No controlling other characters without express permission: Very simple, do not take control of another person character unless they give you express permission to do so. Such permission may be sought in the OOC thread.

  • Do not assume the actions of another player's character without having discussed this with the player in the OOC thread.
  • Do not use out-of-character knowledge to gain an advantage in a roleplay. For example: Do not use your own knowledge of what information is contained within a sealed letter as material your character may use to blackmail another if there's no conceivable way for your character to have read it's content.
  • Creating a character which has no weaknesses or has an unfair advantage over other characters is frowned upon. All characters and their abilities must be plausible.

The OOC section is for roleplays on this site only. If you want to do roleplays in other locations, the site can't stop you. However, you can't use MLP Forums OOC section to search for those roleplays.

PM roleplays are discouraged: In line with the MLP Forums NSFW global rule, members are advised to keep all roleplays in the designated roleplay areas. The OOC section is not to be used for seeking PM roleplays in any form.

If you witness another member breaking these rules, please press the 'Report' button in the lower right of each post. Having a roleplay related issue that doesn't directly relate to one of the aforementioned rules? These people are the ones to approach with any problems or questions you may have.

Unsure what to do next? Why not read the guide for making original characters?

It's come to my attention that we've been enforcing a ban on certain 'inherently NSFW' RPs without having it written down as an official rule. So I have updated the rules to list Cupcakes and Rainbow Factory as inherently NSFW works that cannot be toned down to SFW RPs.

At this point in time, Fallout: Equestria and Five Nights at Freddies are still allowed to be attempted through SFW RPs, providing they *remain* SFW RPs.
