The Alicorn aging process

Recommended Posts

In Journal of the Two Sisters, they said that Alicorns age very slowly, however, Cadance had already become an Alicorn by the time she went to high school and started to foalsit Twilight, and was shown as a teenager in Twilight's flashback in Canterlot Wedding and in her and Shining Armor's arc in the comics, and seems to have aged at about the same rate as a normal pony. Does she age differently than normal Alicorns because she was originally a Pegasus? what do you think?

Cadence's age has always bothered me too... Does this make her a young bride? How will she age next to Shining Armor? It's either a really sad storyline or the rules don't apply to her :-/

Since Cadence is not a born alicorn she ages as a normal pony (maybe a little slower I don't know exactly) along with Twilight as Twilight and Cadence have both became alicorns than born one making them age faster than a born alicorn as for Celestia and Luna born alicorns they are very slowly and even when Cadence was a new born filly and even before that time Celestia and Luna was still a adult so a born alicorn ages at a very slow rate whilst a  created (or a pony turned into a alicorn) age like a normal pony.

I think that "ascended" alicorns age like normal ponies (maybe at like a 15% slower rate). And the royal sisters age slower than everyone else due to them being born alicorns, and also being the celestial sisters, who are in charge of the day/night cycle. So I had just always assumed that Cadance aged like a normal pony would (and she was thrown terminator style into the future after being banished from Sombra's empire) but the royal two age differently due to them being more important.

I'm curious as to where you're getting the 15% figure from?

The age figure on Cadance is odd, as she lived with a earth pony family before solving the love spell that granted her ascension, the 15% is the age margin of error, as the book does not do much to help say/show how long she lived with the family, nor address how she doesn't change physically the entire time. 15% is just a solid margin of error.

Yea, the children's books for FiM tend to have alot of continuity errors, so for simplicities sake, I just put in a margin of error for anyone trying to calculate her age lol.

As I have an alicorn OC, I have given much thought to their aging process. In my mind alicorns born to already immortal alicorns simply age much slower than other ponies. Alicorns born naturally who are not the children of already immortal alicorns are not immortal although I believe they can become immortal like Princess Celestia and Princess Luna did. After a pony goes through a process similar to how a normal unicorn or pegasus (even an earth pony though I think it would take longer) can become an alicorn. This doesn't mean that as soon as a pony is made into an alicorn does their lifespan begin to legnthen or do they automatically gain immortality. The slow aging happens gradually and immortality is something earned much like the title of princess/prince. I think the gaining of immortality is earned after finding out that an alicorn pony has a special talent such as raising the sun or moon or as my OC is able to influence cosmic bodies such as stars and comets who later finds out her cutie mark is a falling star, becomes responsible for diverting stray falling objects from hitting Equestria. It would be only after she diverts a major body from hitting Equestria and straining her powers tied directly into her talent revolving around her cutie mark would she gain immortality like Celestia or Luna. For Candance, I think she hasn't quite yet lived long enough yet for her alicorn status to fully set in so she ages like a normal pony until that happens. Then if she lives long enough for her to have her alicorn status set in, she'll just age slowly until she does something major concerning her talent to possibly gain immortality. She might not become immortal at all though as in my mind, earning that is something even harder than becoming a prince or princess.

Sorry to double post but in addition, I think made alicorns like Twilight and Candace just age like normal ponies in general even with being an alicorn. Simply being an alicorn, like being born with a horn and a set of wings, isn't special but is just another type of pony. Perhaps a rare type of pony in the time setting of FIM but alicorns were pretty common in older incarnations of MLP if my memory serves me well. In FIM, i think alicorns being made is a response to their dwindling numbers. Now for ponies, alicorn, unicorn, pegasus, or earth, that are born to already immortal ponies (I think any pony can gain immortality if their special talent is needed enough to maintain the balance of Equestria) they would be born with immortality that would ware off after a certain amount of time. Then they would age like other ponies reguardless of their type.

As for immortalitiy...I think Princess Celestia and Princess Luna have immortality because their talents are essential to keeping the balance, or harmony, in Equestria. Same would apply to any other pony, alicorn or otherwise, who has a talent that is essential would eventually become immortal after displaying a need for them.

Meh, this probably another plothole in the show that will never be answered. Unless someone makes a headcanon explaining it.

Now that we know that Alicorn's transfering their power is canon. It gives three possible ways of becoming an alicorn.

A/ being born as one.

B/ ascension.

C/ transfer of alicorn magic another vessel.

using these in combination could explain why alicorns age at different rates (or not at all).

I like to think Cadance (and Twilight) age differently from authentic alicorns who were born as alicorns, rather than transformed into one

which is why the writers say Twi won't be outliving her friends, probably because the alicorns who got magic'd into one are just equipped with the body and new alicorn magic as an upgrade, rather than the whole shebang, like certain specific codes in the DNA that causes the authentics, like the royal sisters, to age at a slower rate

I assume they were talking about born alicorns: Celestia and Luna. ;)
