Thoughts on the "canon" of Bonbon and Lyra?

Really, its just a free thread to discuss this concept. Can these two ACTUALLY be put together by Hasbro?

Is cheek to cheek, lips a meer inch apart, enough to warrent a relationship?

Is Hasbro listening to the community, or drinking there own Cool-aid?

Are we seeing what we want to see?

And omg! Derpy is her own band lead!!!!....wait..

These are the questions people!

They exist in the show, so they are canon. If you are talking about a lesbian relationship, you have as much chance of that happening as them reverting Twilight to a Unicorn. As it stands, they are friends. Anything beyond that will likely be just in the head of the fan that likes that interpretation, which is completely fine.

I like to  think that that scene was a subtle nod to the fandom, but I wouldn't say that it's made Lyra x Bonbon canon. Which is a shame really...homosexual couples in children's programing would be a nice step towards normalizing them.

Why does everyone have to immediately relate that scene in Rainbow Rocks to pairing them together?

Good friends play and sing songs all the time. It's not romantic.

I have never once sang a song with any friend unless it was a special someone...

I too have never sat at a piano with a friend, gazed into their eyes, and sang a song, cheek to cheek. These two are as shipped as my $120 case of Surge, which should be in the mail any day now.....

I don't know about the pony Lyra and Bonbon being an Item, but the human ones are totally together. Of course they will keep it juuuust vague enough so the prudes who gawk at anything outside their little bubble of normality won't throw a hissy fit over it. As it is that was some pretty obvious ship moments there.

It's not really the first time something like that has happened.

I think we're running against context pretty hard here. This picture and that youtube video are entirely situational; the Lyra and Bon-Bon scene is pretty much to the point where you have to fight against the fact that it isn't true. I'd also like to point out that Lyra dropped her special talent (the lyre, to my knowledge) so that she could duet with Bon-Bon. That's not something you do lightly in a battle of the bands contest.

Are you comparing a borderline animation error with a clearly intentional beat of animation? Come on now sugarcube try a little harder than that vid :toldya:

Don't you sugarcube me! lol

But do you really believe that was an animation error? With the sound effect and everything? Nu-uh. :P

The whole idea of Lyra and Sweetie Drops being best friends and or a couple isn't an appealing concept to me. It's annoying  >_>

Why are you letting a canon friendship (and probably more) between background ponies you rarely see annoy you? Edited by Buck Testa

Why?

Well, I see all of these fan-made animations and fan fictions about the two, and they both depicted as just... so annoying. These things seem to be more and more common. It's the way that the two are depicted that really irks me.

Lyra is usually depicted as incredibly annoying with her "human obsession" (which, for the record, I find to be anything but cute, funny, or charming). Lyra is just always made out to be so bothersome and obnoxious.

Sweetie Drops is made out to be so bland. She just sits there and says "Lyra.. humans aren't real".

Now that this scene was shown in the new movie, a lot of fans are getting all excited about, when it really isn't anything to make a big deal out of.

So you do not like the fandom interpretation of them? I can get that, I do not really like the fandoms Celestia (except the "to the moon" skit, that was funny) but Hasbro shows the real celestia is nothing like that. I am sure Lyra and Bon Bon are the same way, with different stories than what the fandom gives them. The movie already debunked the idea Pony Lyra is from the human world.

Let them have their friendship, you might end up liking the canon version if they give them screen time.

This right here. I don't think they are officially together, but it was no doubt a tease/"nod" to Lyra and Bonbon shippers.

Which was nice. Rainbow Rocks did great fan service wise.

It isn't canon in a sense that if you ask Meghan, she would confirm it. It is however an intended tease toward LGBT community and LyraBon shippers. Animators do that stuff all the time. Especially with Cheerimac. They tried to do that with Dislestia but they were cought and tease was wasted.

Ah, that scene. Glad I'm not the only one who noticed that Lyra and Bon Bon were sitting particularly close to one another. Personally I think it's a subtle nod/jab and nothing more. No one except hardcore shippers are going to see anything other than the two of them playing a duet.

But a LyraXBonBon shipper can always dream, can't he?

I prefer that they don't try pushing too many fan ideas onto the show. For one, Vinyl and Octy don't have a voice in the show or movies, and that is fine, because there are very talented people who voice those characters, and if DHX does hire people to voice them, and it turns out they use different people who sound nothing like their fanon VAs, many people will be disappointed.

In the case of fanon relationships, what's ok with some people might not be ok with others. While I wouldn't mind there being a female x female relationship, I know there would be some who would mind it. Also, this show is mainly for kids, and although it's good to teach acceptance for all sexual orientations, I think the core target audience (young girls who aren't even 10 yet) would not really understand what's going on. Then again, they would likely just see two ponies kissing and think it's cute, so as long as there's no tongue, or anything else that's suggestive. Maybe a peck, or a hug, but beyond that is kinda iffy.
