I want to know about this forum site called 4chan. I've heard about it frequently in the brony community so I'm curious to know what's the big deal with it.

It's actually that someone on 4Chan started posting pony images as another form of trolling (the site is known for having the worst, yet clever, trolls in internet history) and other people used it for trolling as well but some people actually liked the look of it. Then those people told other people. 4Chan made it popular purely by chance.

 

Some people might have gotten into it as another form of trolling by actually liking it but they liked it nonetheless. Some do it to be different, some do it because it's one more cartoon to watch (I'm in this category. I watch a lot of cartoons.) but it earned it's following and now it's the fandom you know today.

A place where you  shouldn't waste your time. Everybody's like "Faggot this, Autist that" because of the anonymity,  so there's no fear of backlash because you don't know anybody on there. It's also old, and some people will act entitled because they claim they've been there so long. Seriously, stay away from 4chan if you want to stay sane.  

Unless you want a good laugh. I go on there once in a while just to piss some people off and get a reaction because I hate it.

It's an imageboard where people can post pictures and talk about stuff in various boards (Basically topics). Has a reputation for being a rather crazy/offensive place but was actually an alright place where you can get some nice insight on things when people stop shitposting for a while. Most notable they were the ones that got MLP popular in the first place after a bunch of articles slamming it as awful before it even came out garnered it some notoriety.

 

However, more recently the mods have become a bit too controlling and started trying to tone down some of the offensiveness from people and shut down topics that were a wee bit controversial so a good few 4channers moved over to 8chan, where each board is made by whoever wants to make it (If the mods become overbearing just make another board) and there are a few extra features such as posting multiple images in one post and WebM files with sound. 

 

EDIT: A thing I don't actually like about 4/8channers, despite otherwise being one, is their tendency to circlejerk as soon as they meet another 4/8channer and shitpost whatever place they're at to oblivion.

Everything foul and wonderful the internet creates spawns from the 4Chan forums. 4Chan played a big part in the creation of the Brony fandom.

 

Just be careful what you click on there... It's a creepy place at times.

Some boards are better than others s4s is probably the only board that is calm.

The same reason I avoid some reddit boards is for shit like this. You can get some good discussion sometimes and the memes are occassionally not recycled shit but looking for good content there is like digging for gold.

It's half chan. I actually liked 8Chan when I went on it a few weeks back, maybe it was luck at the time but it seems like the whole site is impossible to navigate now. Way to many boards and not many users.

Not quite. I've been banned more times on 4chan than any other forum.

I got banned for posting the rainbow dash easter egg in watchdogs in /v/ for instance. Very odd rules there.

Telling someone not to go there will just make them go there. It's really not that bad it's also not really that good either at least not most of the time.

I can't really add much, but it's does have some good parts to it and there are times where I've found myself laughing and some of the threads (like Hansel's image). To me, the user base seems to enjoy acting stupid and will be rational every now and then. It's not so bad to me until the users start harassing and attacking people.

 

But still, it can look pretty stupid at times.

I'm on 8chan /v/ right now as it looks about 800% less cancerous than 4chan /v/ so I know what I'll be doing in between dull tasks like SEO. I used to have 4chan all configured to use hotkeys and so I could auto expand image when hovered over and sticky threads etc. I'd have to do all that again on 8chan I can't browse like a pleb.
