Any autistic bronies here in MLP Forums?

I don't want to come off as ignorant or unaware of anyone else's plight regarding this subject, but I can't help but wonder if I should have been diagnosed as a child. I have always had difficulty forming friendships and other relationships with people, to the extent that they would often fall apart on me and I would honestly have no idea why, or what I did wrong. Without rambling too much more, could anybody point me or cite an accurate definition of autism? I've been told it has to do with an inability to learn normally, but that's all that anybody could tell me about it. I apologize if I come off as ignorant, please forgive me. :)

You weren't being ignorant at all. :) You were only voicing your thoughts. However, I would recommend that you get yourself diagnosed ASAP! The earlier you do, the better.  :squee:

I'm diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome and even still I'm on the milder end of the spectrum of AS.

I think it has more to do with the fact that I've learned to socialise with others quite well and I was able to make a whole heap of friends for many years, but I still have some things I need to look into. Struggling to find emotional attachment in people (but not the characters of MLP) is an issue I'm having at the moment.

I was diagnosed with asbergers when I was in middle school, but my therapist said it was a misdiagnosis, but I did test a little bit on the autistic side not quite asbergers though..but I was re-tested and in the test I don't have any signs of it anymore, but I can still see it I just hide my "difference" better now.

I'm afraid something would leak out and I'd get treated like an outsider in my Junior class.

Most people can't tell with me either but that wasn't always the case especially during my younger years but it was obvious even in my late teen years. I went from the kid who couldn't talk and threw tantrums all day to a relatively well adjusted albeit often frustrated, burnt out and cynical adult. I for the most part don't make a big deal out of it, if someone asks I will tell them if not than why mention it? I do make a major exception to this on my Youtube channel though where I do a lot of Autism videos because there are a lot of misconceptions out there and it is an issue that is becoming more and more important in society and I want this next generation to have things a bit easier than I did. And I am also writing what will hopefully be the first of many books on the subject for the same reason.

Hear, hear! I agree that autism needs more awareness. There is already a month dedicated to this (I don't know if it applies to only Canada (where I'm from) or the rest of the world). April is already considered and recognized as Autism Awareness Month. And I support that full-heartedly. :)

It is recognized in America where I live as well and most likely some other countries as well.

Has anyone here seen this video of mine yet? I mention that I have HFA (and that the show did help me with my social skills) from 1:24 - 1:26 of the video. I would appreciate it if you share this with as many people as possible in order to spread further awareness of the Autism Spectrum and also why MLP:FiM helped improve our social skills (it helped me a lot, so I figured that it did for you guys also). :) Thanks.

Yes I have Aspergers Syndrome. I had it since I was born. I tend to pace a lot, get anxiety, and have trouble communicating, I have a strong interest in cartoons particularly Disney ones, and also cute japanese characters like Pokémon, and I'm very sensitive.

I have Aspergers. I have had many different special interests due to aspergers the latest being MLP:FiM. I have always been into cartoons with The Simpsons/Futurama being my favourites over the past 9 years. I gave MLP a look because I was curious about the hype but I was surprised at just how good this show actually is. It really does seem to me though that a large percentage of the brony community does have autism/aspergers due to the sometimes obsessive nature of the community, I also think it takes an autistic person to give stuff like this a chance.

Yeah, I got Asperger's Syndrome. It doesn't really bother me too much.I sort of see the social-skill handicap as a good thing, as it acts as a filter. All the people who are bothered by them, you forget about. The people that aren't bothered, stay. It's allowed me to get a small group (4 - 5) of really great friends, most female.

Except, also being asexual / aromantic, it bothers me when people think I am dating / in love with some of them, when I really don't care for any gender.

Overall, it doesn't bother me much, glad to have it, and this community is very appealing for people like us on the spectrum.

I'd actually like to here from a brony on here who isn't autistic. Wonder what can get an "ordinary person" interested in my little pony.

I think there are plenty of them around but they tend not to get as much attention due to the fact that people that are seen as different or strange in any way tend to stand out more no matter what the context. Though even the most "normal" (I hate that word) seeming person would be seen as strange by many for liking a show about cartoon ponies.

There is something to be said about quality over quantity in friendships and other kinds of human relations but the unfortunate thing is that most individuals on the Autism spectrum are more introverted when society seems tailor made to favor extroversion. It is a bit like expecting someone to write an essay on the spot using their weak hand instead of their dominant hand, it can be done but it is a lot more difficult and can take a lot of training and practice to learn how to do effectively. I see it as one of many examples of the brain compensating when certain parts of it don't work right by having other parts of it be more effective in other words there are certain advantages to it but some disadvantages that are difficult though very possible to overcome with the proper support. I can blend in for the most part but once I start to go on sensory overload which often happens at work I tend to temporarily regress and fail to notice certain social cues I normally would get and am more likely to make certain mistakes. Because I am so sensitive though I can notice certain things that escape the notice of most people and compartmentalize certain concepts and tasks miuch more quickly in the right circumstances.

Along with my autism, also have ADHD. This leads me to act a little like Pinkie and a little like Twilight. I've noticed from both online and in real life that a good number of people in fandoms like the brony fandom or even the Pokemon fandom have traits of autism even its only light. I wonder what factors determine that. There are other small traits I've noticed from people with autism. Like how they tend to be more introvert or tend to lean more on the liberal side when it comes to politics.

I'm a autistic (Aspergers) brony. I am always contemplating life and can get lost into my own imagination often. I flap my hands and pace quiet a bit when I'm feeling happy, sad, angry or helpless. I also do it when I'm excited, happy, and care free. Usually extreme emotion. I have ocd which comes along with extreme intrusive thoughts, anxiety depression, and stress. I have done super ficial cuts before. I hum, make weird noises and faces, and twitch. And honestly I was pretty socially handicapped in middle school through 10tj grade. I didn't get a real best friend till then and were still close even if she lives in Michigan. I am socially inept at times. I can't always tell social cues and I have trouble with some hygiene issues. But you know what? I'm funny , wise and smart. I have a beautiful soul and I'm beautiful as I am. Aspergers or not, we are all pretty awesome brownies. Stay rad , peace flowers and fellow aspies. May weirdness always be with you .
