Most difficult game you've played?

Recommended Posts

So I'm currently playing through Bayonetta on the WiiU and I must say that this game is extremely unforgiving! It's really freakin' hard. It requires you to learn how to use it's dodge thing where if you dodge an attack at the last possible moment you enter into slow motion called Witch Time where you can unleash combos upon your enemies. It's really hard to do though especially when you're fighting three to five huge things at once.

So I was wondering, what games have you played that have made you frustrated beyond belief?

Witch Time will probably make Bayonetta way more annoying to play. If I dodge I should just dodge. :okiedokielokie:

Hard to say what the most difficult game I've played is cuz different games are difficult for different reasons. There's games like I Wanna Be The Guy and its fangames that is intentionally made to be pretty difficult, nigh impossible in some cases. Then there's Odin Sphere where it's very easy to screw your character up and be underpowered as hell on top of bosses that will kick your ass at every turn.

There's also stuff like The Impossible Game that's intentionally made to be pretty much impossible. No balance whatsoever.

Or there's games that are just super grindy and are only hard if you don't grind so someone like myself who hates to grind throughout the game doesn't find those games very fun.

How about Forza 4 because of it's hyper-realistic driving where I spin out at literally every turn?

The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth and Super Meat Boy are very difficult games; especially the former. So, I'd go with one of those for my pick for most difficult game I've ever played.

Both Resident Evil 4 and The Evil Within made me fairly frustrated every now and then.  :umad:

XCOM: Enemy Unknown is a pretty difficult game too, particularly if you're playing Ironman where all of your decisions are permanent. No turning back if your favorite Sniper dies... :(

I've lost count of how many times XCOM: Enemy Unknown has kicked my ass. I have tried at least three separate times to beat this game and the farthest I've ever gotten is unlocking Psionic powers.

Then there's a game that's difficulty is all anyone ever has to say about it: Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne by "We-love-your-tears-Atlus". Great game, but be prepared to unfairly die. A lot.

I looked at the list of games people have posted so far and I must remind you all of one impossible game. Abe's oddysee. this game is so difficult that I remember it being a remarkable feet to complete it when it came out! If you play it the good way and try to save everyone it's sickeningly hard!

I didn't mean to say I didn't like it. I think it's awesome. Haha. Without it the game would be a lot harder than it already is. Plus killing things is slow motion is always cool. Plus if you can dodge an attack early and not have Witch Time happen. It's sort of a high risk high reward kind of thing and I love it.

I personally never got stuck on RE4 but I did a few times on Evil Within. I'm not actually finished with The Evil Within yet. Still on the mansion level where Ruvik stalks you around. Been too lazy to endure through it. -_-

I'll play Bayonetta eventually but I've never liked the idea of Witch Time. Sounds like it'll just slow everything down.

Believe me when I say that it doesn't. It doesn't last long and you move at the same speed. So you're still attacking fast as hell just that you don't have to worry about getting hit for two or so seconds. If anything, it makes it even more action-y. It's simple and satisfying and becomes addicting.

I see a difficult games thread; but no Demon Souls or Dark Souls

XCOM: Enemy Unknown is also another good one... I still haven't beaten it and my team is made of bonified Badasses.

Back in the 1980s, a non computer Game called Aftermath.  In those days, gamers were divided into 2 groups.  If you told them there was a 2 page flow chart to help you manage the combat system, Group 1 would turn around & break their neck getting away.  I was in the other group & rushed right out & bought it.

The combat system for the original  Chivalry and Sorcery game wasn't much fun either

The other extreme would be the Amber role playing game (based on Zelazney's 9 Princes in Amber).  The rule was, if you were 2 or more combat levels above your opponent, the DM simply decided what happened & you didn't have to role play the fight.

Probably because those games aren't really hard. Punishing to the stupid and the airheads, but not difficult. Bosses and enemies move slow but if you get hit you take lots of damage. They give you a million and one ways to defend yourself and even revert damage back to the enemy.

The game tests adaptability but little else. The problem is that most people who play it can't seem to adapt and play the game however they want to and it makes the game harder than necessary. Doesn't help that the game doesn't give you all the info you need, at least not directly. It can be figured out but some people just make it easy on themselves and read a Wiki article. :P

I remember when I was younger, Donkey Kong 64 was extremely hard trying to complete it 100%. It took me months. (I was about 4 years old ;p)

Recently I've been playing The Forest. Ugh, starting off it's hard. :/

METAL SLUG 3. You can't beat the whole thing with just twenty credits. One hit you're dead, and there's one million things going on screen so it makes it even harder. It taken me about three months to beat the game.

Really? I was 9 years old when I played that and I beat the entire game within about 5 days.

 One thing I've learned over the years is that everyone has different ideas of what games are difficult and what makes them so.

Anyone who comes into this topic should take anyone else's opinions on the matter with a grain of salt, including my own.

On the other hand, you should listen when people talk about how to make the game easier. More often than not you're just doing it wrong, regardless of what game it is. ;)

Sonic '06. If you've played it you know why, if you haven't, don't.

But on a scale of difficulty.. I dunno. I was only a kid but way back on the NES there were some nightmarishly hard games, like the Castlevania series, or Ninja Gaiden, and I still consider the more modern Ninja Gaiden games to be pretty damn difficult. I guess in recent years the games that have given me the most trouble though would be either X-Com or the original Demons Souls. Oh yes, and S.T.A.L.K.E.R for FPS'..

I think Super Mario Bros 3 would be the one I've struggled with most of all, out of all the games I've played- World 8 is brutal :/ To this day, I haven't been able to get to the end without using restore points.

This is a fun and interesting topic.  How do we define "difficulty" with respect to games?  The hardest games ever made would be games that are absolute crap, and handicap the player through bad mechanics and faulty gameplay.  Games like Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde for NES.  But we can't really count that, now can we?  I think we just want to talk about the well made games, the games you'd want to play, that challenge the player properly and fairly, with good mechanics and gameplay.

Obviously, most hardcore gamers know that the games of yesteryear were inevitably harder than today.  Games of today are typically designed to be beaten.  Games of olde were often designed to just see how far you could get, but it wasn't expected that you'd ever actually beat them.

First, I'll list a few noteworthy tough challenges in modern (or fairly modern) games.  These aren't really the whole games, but specific parts I found very difficult.

-Elephant escort on Coastal Highway in ODST on Legendary with all skulls (no iron.  I don't care who you are, that's impossible.)

-Metro 2033 amoeba scene, without using the exploit

-Dirge of Cerberus - Misslebreaker Deathmatch

-God of War - Challenge of the Gods 10

-God of War II - Theseus, Titan mode

-Halo 2 Legendary.  Basically the whole game.  Regret and Quarantine Zone are the worst.

-Sephiroth in Kingdom Hearts

Those are a few of the hardest scenes that come to mind.  But of all my modern games, the one and only challenge I've never managed to do is Boss Battles on Intense in SSBB.  I did Very Hard, but I've never come close to Intense.

But even though all of those seem so hardcore and difficult, they really don't compare to so much of the old school stuff.  I think original Super Mario Bros is probably harder than any of that stuff, if you're doing it legit on the console.  I don't think I ever beat it until I did it emulated with tool assistance.  And I never played many of the reputedly hardest games of all time, games like Ghosts and Goblins, and original Ninja Gaiden.  You know, I often see the Lion King on SNES, specifically the Can't Wait to Be King level, popping up on hardest game lists.  It's not hard.  Really.  You just have to wait until the last second to jump so the ostrich doesn't fall and hit the lower nest.  It's a cake walk.  Now, Be Prepared, that's a bloody nightmare.  I'd rank Be Prepared as one of the hardest levels in game history.

Right now I'm enjoying Risk of Rain.  That's a damn hard game, but again, it's a go-for-your-high-score kind of game.  You know what was another really hard game?  Roger Dodger.  It was a screen saver in the old After Dark pack that you could take control of and play.  I remember it being difficult, anyway.

Well, I could go on forever.  Better wrap it up.  'night.
