Has anyone in your family served in the military?

One of my grandpa's (who is no longer alive) served in both WWII and Vietnam I think as a technician. I did not know him very well and my other grandpa died before I was even born. That is about all I know really.

My granddad is a purple heart veteran that served in Vietnam, and I believe he did Airbourne as well.

I don't know anyone else in my family that's served per say.

My Grand-Father (R.I.P. 2014) was in the canadian army as a parachutist, but he never participated in important battles. If he had participated in the korean war, he would had never met my Grand-Mother, so I could had been never alive with this name and life.

Yes, my Grandfather was in the Army. Unfortunately, he died when my Mom was in High School. Not on duty no, cancer was what got him. Tragic isn't it? What evil men could not do to him, he did to himself with cigarettes.

My paternal grandfather was in WW I, My father was in WWII.  He was in the US liberation forces at Dachau & IMO he had what we would call PTSD because of it.  It is easier to have abstract sympathy for this than it is to live w someone who has it.

My Paternal Grandfather served in the Irish reserve army back in the 50's, I believe.

Apparently 2 of my great-grandfathers, from both maternal and paternal sides, were members of the IRA in the War of independance and subsequent Civil War. They stood down when ordered by DeValera (A hugely popular freedom fighter and politician who would go on to become Ireland's first ever president).

This was back when the IRA were freedom fighters, struggling for independance. My Mum remembers her Grandfather saying something along the lines of "These new lads aren't the same as what we were. They're not like 'The Ra' was."

Fun Fact: DeValera actually stayed in my great-grandparents farm once when hiding from the British forces.

One of my grandfathers was a drill instructor during WWII and also fought in the Korean war.

My other grandfather was in Japan during WWII. He was never in any real combat, but he has some amazing stories nevertheless.

My brother served 4 years in the Air Force as an MP and my paternal grandfather served in the Italian Navy. My brother didn't see any combat and I don't remember whether or not my grandpa did.

During his early 18s, my father served in the army as a result of the obligatory militar service validity period. Thankfully he was discharged (Due to my grandfather forcing him to get title and a job in Buenos Aires) just before the Malvinas/Falklands conflict ensued from a dumn tactic coinceived by the de facto goverment.

He's always lamented not being there alongside his friends and fellow comrades, defending our decaying nation against a frightening enemy.

No one's a saint in a war, an "evil" side is something absolutely subjective. As sad as it is, a soldier represents nothing more than a chess piece controlled by its contry's interests, not his (At least in most cases). Edited by Shadow Beam

My great-grandfather was in the US Army in World War 2, my grandfather on my mother's side was a US Army nurse/medic in Vietnam, my father was a US Army Combat Medic in the 70's-90's, my mother was a US Army Military Policewoman in the 80's, my half-brother was a US Army Combat Medic in Iraq, and my cousin was a US Army Ranger (now SF) in Afghanistan (and maybe other places.) I'm also looking forward to being the first US Marine in my family line by the end of the year, or sometime during next year.

My Grandfather was a Supply Sergeant during WW2. He has been in almost every major battle in Europe but has never actually fired his weapon or seen combat (He was either in the rear or came towards the end of battle for re-supply).

And my Great Great (how many greats?) Grandfather was in the Civil War on the Union side and led one of the many raids on Confederate Base: Libby Prison (off orders, apparently he went AWOL and rounded up a civilian militia, still received a signed presidential award)

And I myself have been in the Pennsylvania National Guard for a little over two years now. MOS 25U (Signal Support Systems Specialist).

I remember I was really impressed when I heard my grandad was in WWII, but he was only in the home guard. He's the only one I know in my family to have had any military service whatsoever

Grandfather from mom's side served in the Air Force and fought in the 1965 war. From my dad's side, Grandfather and all his brothers fought in the war and unfortunately many of them were killed. (I think there were 5 or 6 brothers in total and as far as I know, 3 of them were killed)

I also plan to join the Air Force. Going to have to study aeronautical engineering for it though.

My dad served as a sharpshooter in the Finnish army for 25 years. He was the second best sharpshooter. Whenever I'm bored he tells me stories about when he was actually in a battle.

My stepfather served in the Army Reserves. He didn't fight, because it was during a peace time, but he still did the training and everything.

And my Grandfather on my Mother's side served, also didn't fight, during the Vietnam War, I believe, I think he mainly did desk work or something stationed out in Vietnam.

My grandfather was in the Army, my uncle as well, my dad in the Navy, my younger brother in the Airforce and I just recently finished up seven years in the Navy.

It feels so nice to be a civilian again. e u e
