Why do you think Spike is a child?

I always liked to perceive him being chronologically older than the Mane 6. Because even though he is biologically like 3 to 5 years younger than Twilight, who knows how long has it been since his mother had his egg. Dragons hatching much later than their supposed birth date could be possible. Also he is only baby to long living Dragons but actually an adult to ponies.

I see him as a teen. We saw him hatch when Twilight was young. I view Twilight as an adult in her twenties.

Physically as a dragon yeah, but in every other way, no. Twilight was too young for them to have a huge age difference. There's no way she could be much older than him and he still be a child. Doesn't match up.
