Would you be a brony if the show made hair combing a focus?

As good as FIM is, its main purpose for Hasbro has always been to sell toys. And every pony in their main line of toys featured a comb for their long manes and tails.

Let's say they wanted Lauren Faust and other producers to make that a huge part of the show. All the ponies' manes and tails are longer than their bodies, and they're all over the place. The episodes that have been produced so far would generally be the same, except there HAS to be a comb worked into the plot somehow.

Some people begin to question why it's necessary, and Hasbro's response is that it's for the same reason transforming is necessary for the Autobots and Decepticons. It's "part of who they are."

Would you still consider yourself a brony, or even be able to recommend the show, if this was how it worked?

If it was given some kind of purpose, like it being a part of their society or something, then sure, if the episodes were not different in any other way. If it was just to appease the toy line, then I might still like the show anyways, again, if nothing else was different. Granted this idea would be really hard to give some kind of sense. Rarity I could see it perfectly, but all of the others? Ehhhh not really. It would just be a form of 'over fashionalizing'. Detrimental and unnecessary? Maybe. Making the show unwatchable? Probably not, not for me.

I would give it a chance, tbf they have done pretty good so far with having to have all of the advertising and stuff within the show and making it still marketable for kids to buy it! (ie twilight becoming a princess)

But I'm not sure they will do this much more, the show is so popular because they don't do stuff like this and have a solid story :)! Thats why bronys buy so much merch!

No, because precisely that kind of idiocy is what Hasbro tactfully avoided. The most they got involved was that one character had to be fashion conscious and Celestia could not have "queen" as Her title.

Lauren's solution to both of these was to make Rarity a professional artist who's medium just happened to be clothes and to still treat Celestia as every bit the royal authority She is.

If hasbro ordered something like this, than even Lauren couldn't have salvaged it.

Only if it was exclusive to Rares which it kinda is already. It'd be a pretty bad show if it was all the time.

Hmm. A mandatory mane brushing scene. There might even be a mane brushing jingle too. Or mane brushing episodes. They can be in the middle of a tense episode, and suddenly, it's time to brush. Mane brushing over plot.

So, no. I would not watch the show if that nonsense was part of it. I would have been repelled before I would watch enough episodes to become a fan.

Oh wait. I saw this much clearer now. No. I wouldn't watch it. It sounds like mane combing would become bigger than the plot of the episode.

That sounds pretty awful. We'd have to call it, "My Little Mane Combing" from now on. Even Hasbro, as asinine as they are, would recognize this to be a huge mistake and completely illogical in a television marketing sense.

That would be the breaking point for me. This show is already on thin ice with me as it is. So no, I'd no longer be a Brony.

That is... such an odd question...

It wouldn't even be a matter of becoming a fan, it'd be a matter of keeping your attention. I doubt anyone who's not 5 years old or younger would hate it, and any parent that can survive through an unholy bad show such as that deserves respect.

I'd leave immediately.

you mean like a magic comb that would release some sort of power in the pony whose mane it brushed?

I'd still be a brony for that, but not if it was the point of the entire series.

maybe an episode or two.

EDIT: oh! you mean like a normal brush? no.

that would be nice for Fluttershy or Rarity, but dammit, don't put it in the plot.

just give us that cuteness on the side.

Not one bit. It gives the implication that the people writing and producing the program prefer clichéd and lazy ways to capture the audience's attention rather than put any effort to subverting them and go for originality.

I would give it a chance. I don't think it would be fair to say 'NO' to it unless I gave it a watching first.

As such, I gave G3.5 a chance. I knew of it's reputation, but I couldn't say that I didn't like it without watching it first. I did that, and I didn't like it.

I would use that same line of thinking in regards to a combing-focused G4.

I wouldn't really see a point in them over-dramatizing about something such as hair combing. I mean, not only does it appear relatively left to blatancy that some of them do keep their hair kept relatively well and all, you don't really need to work in something that most people would consider relatively average of people / ponies to do...... Heck, I comb my hair every single day, so I mean first hoof "proof" to myself anyway...... .-.

As for the analogy to the Transformers' ability to transform, I don't see how that can really be indoctrinated into a "It's just who they are" kinda thing... I mean, the hairstyles of which each pony maintains about themselves would technically then be "who they are" not necessarily the brush, or act of brushing itself anyway.

A huge thank you to my great friend AppleGearRising for this signature picture

Thank you Apple, I love it so much!

Normally I would just post the picture, but as it seems, it is too big to put in the signature here, so here is the link to my MLP personality test results:

Hmmmm.

I'm going to say no, because I don't feel that they could shoehorn a comb in every episode without it coming across as forced and cheesy. If it's some kind of magic comb then it COULD work for some of the 2 parters, but EVERY episode, I don't think so. Even if it was used in moderation, I feel it would still be cheesy, and wouldn't remotely compare to the magic and lore of the elements, which I feel they would replace.

I think it would ruin it to be honest, but just my opinion.

MH! YEAH! COMB THAT HAIR!

Uhm, I might have developed a new fetish...

Aaaaaaanyway back on topic and serious now... I probably would, as long as the story stays the same. I would have something I could make fun of or possibly to use as a drinking game but that's it. If it's all about hair combing, then nope, abort ship.

Either, or. I was actually thinking about a magical brush, except if they did that, kids would probably be disappointed that the toys don't have some built-in gimmick to recreate those powers. And I think Hasbro would much rather keep their toys cheap.

The comb is an item associated with the toys. Basically, if the Transformers can switch between vehicle and robot forms, as toys and as characters in the cartoons, I wouldn't put it past Hasbro to want all the ponies in FIM to be seen frequently brushing.

I'm surprised they didn't make any interesting toy accessories out of the elements. Having them light up and project cutie mark images would have given the line-up more value.
