Awww, looky that... I made the pretty purple pony blush!

I have been watching My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic online for the past two years, and during the just-concluded sixth season I found myself becoming a fan of Starlight Glimmer, the hate-filled arch-enemy of Season 5 who made a sudden and dramatic (and to some fans, controversial) change at the end of  the two-part season finale "The Cutie Re-Mark".

Within the MLP fandom, it seems that Starlight polarizes the fans the way Donald Trump polarizes the entire known multiverse. You either love her wholeheartedly or hate her viciously. Anypony undecided or in between is torn in half by both sides. I am in the pro-Starlight camp, but I don't understand the emotionalism some fans take in either venerating or villifying the poor unicorn. I guess I'm not the hardcore fanboy type. But for what it's worth, here are a few reasons why I've grown to like Glim Glam:

i_m_not_ever_going_back_now__by_lil_love

  • She sincerely and eagerly wants to change and become a better pony. In all of her friendship lessons, mistakes and all, Starlight is trying her best to learn all about giving and receiving friendship, and by extension unconditional love.
  • I like her new mane style. I loved it the moment Hasbro leaked it to the interwebs. It shows that she has truly changed and is making a new beginning. She looked too much like a little filly with her previous style, which may have been a subtle suggestion she was still very immature and stunted.
  • She is tortured by her past, which makes us sympathize with her. In "To Where and Back Again, Part 1" Princess Luna intervened in Starlight's nightmare and told her she sees a lot of herself in the powerful unicorn. Like Luna, Starlight is ashamed of her evil past, especially taking away other ponies' cutie marks ("The Cutie Map") and destroying Equestria several times over in an vicious time loop ("The Cutie Re-Mark"). Everypony has forgiven her and gave her a second chance, but Starlight hasn't forgiven herself. That's why she suddenly was timid, cautious and jumpy after she became Twilight's student. She thinks she doesn't deserve the grace and mercy given to her, and is scared of backsliding to her old ways.
That's what I like the most about Starlight. She is flawed and vulnerable, just like us humans in the real world. As blunt and sarcastic as she may still be, you find yourself cheering for her as she stumbles through her friendship lessons and makes the right choices rather than the easy ones.
  • She is an awesomely powerful unicorn with a hilariously cute weakness. Starlight can fly, zoom at accelerated speed, duplicate herself, emit powerful force fields, travel through time, teleport to several places over long distances, turn invisible, protect her friends under magic domes, and played a big part in saving the Crystal Empire from eternal winter. With all that power, Starlight tends to think that magic is the answer to everything. But of course, that isn't always the case, as she learned when she tried to tackle five friendship lessons all at once in the wacky episode "Every Little Thing She Does".

pinkie_pie_crazed_smile_sprite_by_genera "Whatever you want to do first, Starlight Glimmer!"
stardozy_by_sourceicon-daj4fet.png "Uh, girls... can you just call me 'Glim Glam' instead?"
rarity__blink_eye__plz_by_luckreza8-d8q0 "Of course, dahling! We shall henceforth call you Glim Glam, Starlight Glimmer!"

Whoever thought Starlight would hate being cheerfully called by her full name by her mind-controlled zombie friends?

  • I have a sweet spot for reformed villains. Princess Luna, Diamond Tiara, Trixie, Discord (yes, even him) and now Starlight Glimmer have all won me over because I'm a sucker for redemption stories. The human response to a villain who has realized the error of his or her ways is to make them suffer viciously for what they did, take pleasure in their punishment, and gloat in our self-righteousness. Well, ponies ain't human, not even Sunset Shimmer. Seeing all these former enemies learn a better way of living and becoming friends (or at least good-natured frenemies in Discord's case) while still having the attitude and rebel streak from their old ways is always entertaining.

Glim Glam is as flawed as heck, just like most of the other ponies on the show. She's still a control freak, but is now scared of actually being put in a leadership role. She is a magic prodigy, but freaks out when her powers screw things up. And she's just so lovable being her tense but reformed self. And she is a refreshing addition to Friendship is Magic, which after five seasons on TV needed a little bit of shaking up with characters like her.

I recognize not everyone (or everypony) will agree or understand my opinion on Starlight. But that's okay; not everypony believes that Starlight has truly changed. And in the end, it's just a TV show. (Yeah, and so was Star Trek.) I just don't try to take it all too seriously. I just enjoy the show, love the creative writing and cheer for Twilight's residential student, who is becoming beautiful from the inside out.

The reason I like her is because I think that she will give the show a better reputation rather than the disaster that I call Season 5, I think if you give her time, I feel that she will become a better character with a good personality and I will have high hopes for the if she is the protagonist.

People really need to give her a chance, I mean they always do it when Rainbow does a mistake and she had 6 seasons to get it right.

@@Kenshiro,

Agreed but I must kinda disagree with the fact she eagerly wants to change. Well, she does eagerly "want" to change but not "try" to change. On the contrary, she's so scared and her self-confidence so shattered until the S6 finale that she usually ran away from it all. Makes you want to snuggle her even harder!

thumb.png I'm gonna be very bad and try sneak this in here. One of my favorite things about Starlight is actually her friendship with Trixie. They're two underdogs that don't quite fit in, but they genuinely care about each other!

And the part of "No Second Prances" where they have a fight and Trixie tries to brush it off by saying I definitely don't feel like my heart is breaking into a million pieces!" gets me every time!

I definitely agree with you, there. No Second Prances was one of my favorite S6 episodes, and was the episode that gave me every reason to love Trixie and Glimmer. Edited by ChB

I know I say this a lot, but if Starlight Glimmer doesn't become an alicorn princess in Season 7, I'm going to start crying.

Please, Starlight. Don't make this little baby cry. You've already turned yourself around. We all have high hopes for you.

(Starts to cry)

Why must you tease me so much? I'm just a little baby who wishes the best for Starlight.

Seems like Starlight is just as excited for S7 as I am, I wonder what she is doing for the holidays since we have no episode.

Here is your answer, same as between S5 and S6:

How could you make a baby cry like that? His hopes for Starlight becoming a princess were pure.
