Steve Piranha 25,789
Is he really a horse though? He has a cutie mark, while the horses(?) from Saddle Arabia don't. One of his parents could be a horse. We already got a mule, so why not a pony-horse cross?
midnightlegacy 172
He could be a Clydesdale.
UnknownFry 169
He is a Clydesdale horse so that is one reason he is so massive and bulky. I also believe his size was meant to be intimidating as well which factors into the conception others have of him as well. Side Bird 565
If you look on the wiki it says that he's an earth pony. So he must just be a really dang big earth pony. "According to Shoes' voice actor Jim Miller, Trouble Shoes is the largest pony designed for the series." Yeppers, he's just a big pony. Yes, and i would call that a horse. That's what big ponies are called, horses.

"According to Shoes' voice actor Jim Miller, Trouble Shoes is the largest pony designed for the series." They don't call him a horse though, they just call him a large pony. Large ponies can still be just ponies. You could probably compare his size to the CMC, see how many it takes to make him and get his true height in feet. Maybe he is a horse, I prefer to classify him as an alien pony.

You know, another name for a 'large pony' is a horse. He is what he is, due to his size and name being Clyde, it most likely is referring to a Clydesdale Horse, which he might be, which are big if i recall, and are also horses. But i digress. paradoxical 1,735
My thought; the show is subtly seen through the lens of different characters. Seeing a big person in a startling situation could make them seem bigger than they are in comparison to a mild mannered big person. Big Mac and Trouble shoes are, according to this way of looking at the series almost exactly the same size. But TS is PERCEIVED as bigger because of his demeanor. [we see this lens clearly a few times, such as Party of One, or Bats, but I feel it's always on, just subtly]
Kyoshi 39,406
Is he really a horse though? He has a cutie mark, while the horses(?) from Saddle Arabia don't. Oddly enough those characters in particular are still called 'ponies' in every related media. This show does not seem to clarify if other types of 'horses' are a thing. Except for Zebra's, that is something I suppose. Other than the species thing, I think he is large in size to meet his overly clumsy personality. Clumsy + huge size that gets in the way = chaos. He makes Big Macintosh look like Average Macintosh.

Maybe he's a hybrid pony... on his Aunts third cousins twice removed side. Ahh that makes sense right?
Shanks 10,802
He has been taking his vitamins, that is for sure. The theory of him being Clydsdale is reasonable and not just because of his size but other than that it seems as if nearly every pony convention established in the show seems to apply to him. I suppose a case of giantism can also be possible though Troubleshoes case also poses the possibility of more pony sub species, the season 3 premier did introduce the crystal ponies after all. And Fiendship is Magic #1 revealed that King Sombra is part of a pony species called umbra ponies which of course makes me wonder what what kinds of abilities umbra earth ponies and umbra pegasi have. MLPFanatic34 3,215
I think Trouble Shoes may be a Clydesdale horse, I've seen those horses on television and man are they huge.
ArcheoPony 76
Horses don't have cutie marks if we go by the Saddle Arabians. He could just be a pony/horse mix of some sort.
Ashen Pathfinder 16,073
Well, just like there are humans who are larger than the norm, I'm pretty sure that the same can apply to ponies.
