So in the first movie when Twilight was gonna conquer Sunset Shimmer and free the school Twilight says  "The magic contained in my Element was able to unite with those that helped create it! [echoing] Honesty! Kindness! Laughter! Generosity! Loyalty! Magic! Together with a crown, they create a power beyond anything you could imagine, but it is a power you don't have the ability to control! The crown may be upon your head, Sunset Shimmer, but you cannot wield it, because you do not possess the most powerful magic of all: the magic of friendship", and then says "The magic of friendship doesn't just exist in Equestria. It's everywhere. You can seek it out, or you can forever be alone. The choice is yours."

 

Which begs the question... how powerful is this magic, and is this force omnipresent....

All magic in the EG movies so far was brought over from Equestria. Friendship is just friendship and there are those that can harness it to do stuff. Twilight Sparkle is the only one who can harness friendship into magical death and destruction.

I believe it's a message that no matter where you go there is friendship and that friendship is magic. Since the Force can be used to force people into doing what you want regardless of your desires it can't be the same. The Sith wield it for nefarious purposes, but Friendship might not be wielded by evil doers with selfish motives.

She was just using the Element of Magic she didn't have the whole set. Until now I haven't seen a villain use Friendship is Magic attack yet. But I think there is a corruptible element to it as you said. When she took control over the students that might not be Friendship but something else.
