Has MLP Ruined Mindless Action Movies for Anyone Else?

Recommended Posts

A few weeks after I had first started to watch the show, I found myself to be less and less enthralled by mindless action scenes in movies. After a few months (now) I cringe slightly every time someone is killed. Now don't get me wrong, I still admire a well choreographed fight sequence, but I can no longer find any enjoyment in movies like 'The Expendables', in which the violence is the bulk of the movie.

So I would like to know if any of you have had similar experiences, or if I just turned into (even more of) a pansy.

No, not really. I take these mindless action movies for what they are. Mindless entertainment. That what they promote and that's what i get.

I don't watch these movies to get intellctualy stimulated. If i want to do that, i watch Blade Runner.

It's not really "turning me into a pansy" per se, nor do I blame MLP for it, but I have lost a bit of interest in action movies as well. I consumed quite a bit of them when there was a resurgence of action movies as well as action comedies in the early 2010s, from about 2008 to 2012.

Once I saw Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, I started to realize how generic most action movies were and how much they rely on well-worn tropes, and the standard for Hollywood action and science fiction, as far as I'm concerned, raised the first time I saw The Matrix in 2013.

Thank MLP in part for making me more attentive to story and character in most types of media. When I first got into MLP back in late 2011/early 2012, I had gotten addicted to the show and the fandom, and very much spoiled by it, virtually demanding every work I had watched and every character to have the onscreen chemistry, energy, and story style blending accessibility and subtlety as MLP. This crossed many different genres.

MLP helped me to be more critical and discerning of media in general, rather than just one or a handful of genres.

Nope, mlps a decent enough cartoon but it hasn't really changed the movies I like >.<

No, because mindless action movies are just mostly there for entertainment, not movies that make you think and stuff.

Why would it? They're both totally different things

Most action movies are just fun romps that people can enjoy.

I do like action films. I love the Iron Man movies, as well as Thor. (Yow, THOR!!) I'm capable of liking many genres and mediums. Right now I'm reading my way through Issac Asimov's Foundation series. It's very thought provoking, but also loaded with action and adventure.

Yeah, but what I'm saying is that after I got used to the MLP way of doing things, those kinds of action movies stoped being "fun romps" for me. Accually, I've never gotten really invested in a hardcore action movies. I would just watch them when ever my father put them on to look at the explosions and chases. And I still do love watching explosions, but now I need there to be an actual story for it to be enjoyable.

I completely agree. All the new Marvel movies have been a blast, with story, comedy, and character development to offset the (quite impressive) action scenes.

I currently have the Foundation series along with Nemasis on my to-read list. I started them both, but had to stop for the moment due to time restrictions. From what I read of them, they are exelant books, just like everything Asimov writes.

Yes and no.

  1. I was once a fan of these pandering action flicks, both movies and episodic cartoons, because the action was definitely a hell of a lot of fun. But I stopped being a fan of mindless action flicks a few years ago because they're always full of shit.
  2. But I wasn't able to really get why they were bad. They just were. Analyzing, critiquing, and reviewing content in shows like FIM helped me better understand what makes one story objectively better than another. One way is how it's better to tell a simple story with plenty of three-dimensional character interaction with no huge action at all than tell a story devoid of genuine conflict and just full of cheap thrills. Substance trumps style any day of the week.

Pretty sure after CGI, constant remakes and Michael Bay, all action movies have ruined themselves. Movies these days are very uninteresting to me. MLP has nothing to do with this boring spiraling descent for the big picture.

No, I still love my action flicks and The Walking Dead.  I've always been a sucker for super hero movies.  Yeah, they're formulaic and predictable.  Superman is never going to die at the end...but I still just watch them for the over the top special effects and non-stop action.  For me, MLP is just something different that I get a lot of enjoyment out of watching.

I lost interest in mindless action movies a while ago. I don't watch them as much as before. It happened somewhat in games too, at least in terms of characters, I would never pick someone like Dante and Kratos over Gabriel Belmont or Solid Snake as better characters

Mindless action films have been around for awhile now, the eighties were chock full of them, so regardless of what MLP does, it will not affect my opinion of action films nor any mindless horror movie, I go into each median with a different mindset, I know what to expect when I see an action film, so it is not the same demeanour I have when I see PAW Patrol, anyway MLP is made primarily for TV, action films are movies, so both are made for specific audiences, that have multiple duplicities, so what see is what you get, if you want a compelling story that is animated My Little Pony is what you chose, but if you just want entertainment, any mindless action film past or present will do.

I thought I was the only one. Not only have action movies been ruined for me, but I can't possibly find any interest in any of these FPS or action games. Just seems like hollow, senseless violence, with absolutely no redeeming qualities.

I never liked mindless action movies in the first place. I by far prefer more cerebral or intelligent action movies with a solid story to most of the drivel that comes out today, with the exceptions of OTT awful movies, since those seem to actually be interesting.

My feelings towards film violence have changed over time - and before I ever watched FIM.  But, generally speaking, I like action films just fine.  Provided they aren't completely moronic.  I do, however, detest FIM fan works that involve excessive violence or gore.

You can thank the Die Hard series for that. The first one was fantastic, and set the bar for what I feel an action movie should be. But after that, they just kept sliding downward into complete mediocrity.

I like action, but it needs to have purpose or I just get bored.

You know, I think this is a very good question.

Yes.  It has definitely changed my outlook on movies.

It took some time, but I have become more sensitive to the irrational violence in movies we see nowadays.

Just the other night, dad was flipping through the channels, while we were eating dinner in the TV room.  He turned on Fast Five (Fast and Furious Five).  Now, I love cars, as you know, I'm a total gearhead.  So, I had seen this movie before.  But, I was seeing it through different eyes than I'd seen it years ago.  I was more sensitive to the violence, and the shooting of guns and random killing of people.  It just seemed stupid to me.  Senseless killing like that, it just... turns me off anymore.  I don't like it.  I mean, it's a good movie for car lovers like me, and I loved it for the cars, but the movie as a whole?  Meh.  It's just silly.  The violence turns me away and I don't like seeing senseless shooting of random people.

Has MLP "turned me into more of a pansy"?  Lol, well, I guess yes, to be honest.

Action movies, no, MLP has had no real effect on my opinion towards them, over time I have lost interest in those anyways. Considering how bad many have gotten over the years, they ruined themselves for me.

Instead MLP has ruined pretty much most 'adult' cartoons, like stuff on Adult Swim. I just don't find them entertaining and far too overly depressing, for the sake of being 'dark and gritty'. Which I am happy for this, because most of those shows try way too hard to be funny by way of absurdities.
