I triple checked. He set her down when the trouble started. It was never explicitly said that he picked her up again, though there was some phrasing that implied it. I mulled it over and took this route.

 He let out a sigh, he really didn't want to fight an ally. He picked up the mystery mare in his magic again and gently set her on his back, his ability in magic was now known so no point in hiding it anymore.
