I've had this on my mind for a while now but I've been thinking about writing fanfiction again. But lately I've just lost the confidence to try my hand at one considering the crappy fanfics I wrote when I was 13 and very active in the community.

More on the fic itself, I was thinking of just making a crossover with any of the video games I enjoy playing but I keep finding much better alternatives that suit each idea I get. I honestly feel..overwhelmed by the amount of content and stories that this community has to offer which really limits my choices. I once wrote an MLP/Hetalia crossover fic that turned out like shit so I never finished it.

My main question is what can I do to set my fanfiction apart from the multiple amounts of others and what can I do to avoid mistakes (such as grammar and other errors in the story). And also, how do I properly represent a canon character?

Apologies if I'm sounding clueless..I'm just really nervous on posting my works like this..even if it'll only be here and on Wattpad.

Although I don't do that much writing myself, I do plenty of reading. I've read plenty of fanfics too. The ones that stand out are often detailed, but not so much that it becomes distracting. Emotional, but not overflowing with love and hate, sadness and glee. Equally, they're not dull, but not so full of action that the reader thinks 'Michael Bay movie'. It needs a careful balance.

Your choices are never limited, especially when it comes to literature. So what if there are twenty fics on the same crossover you have chosen? Each one stands out in its own way. And nothing should stop you from posting your writings. As long as you are satisfied, so will others be.

Spelling and grammar can be easily rectified; find a Proofreader. I'd be happy to do this, no matter the subject. Been a while since I've proofread anything. (Just PM me)

Naturally, there should be some leeway with canon characters and their representation within a crossover setting. New situation, new behaviour, prehaps? I'm sure someone will disagree with me there. If you're really struggling to represent a canon character, watch a few episodes, and concentrate on how they react to their situation (If it's a video game character... Well, play the game. Of course, it depends on the character. At first, many characters in Skyrim seem very developed, but turn out to have little to no depth.)

The best advice I can give is pay great attention to the characters you plan to involve. Few people enjoy crossovers where characters don't act like they would 'normally'.

Hope this has been of some help.

Couldn't have said it better than Forth did.

I will say, as a writer myself, I know how you feel and it's honestly why I have a backlog of ten fics, which I'm currently working on again. I'll think up a new story, see a bunch like it and get discouraged. But you know what really sets it apart from the others? Not posting it. Sets it so far apart that it can't be found.

You should be writing for your own enjoyment. Others liking it is a bonus, but honestly, getting your ideas out there for others to see means you put in a bunch of effort for something you love and that's all the reward you really need. Screw what the others say. Its your story, not theirs.

Also yes, proofreading. The more the better. I'll offer up my services as well for that.

Good luck with the writing, hun~ It'll be awesome, because you wrote it. You put effort into it and you took the time to post it.
