spoiler Is Duchess Diamond Waves an alicorn?

I just finished reading Princess Celestia and The Summer of Royal Waves and Duchess Diamond Waves has some traits that, as far as we know, only alicorns have. It sounds like she's unusually tall. She has a magical mane like Princess Celestia and Princess Luna. She's the only one who can make waves in the ocean (at least in Monacolt), just like how Princess Celestia and Princess Luna (and maybe Twilight and Princess Cadance) are the only ones who can raise the sun and the moon. She was referred to as a unicorn, but Princess Celestia and Princess Luna have also been called unicorns a few times, so that doesn't mean anything. Is she an alicorn?

Being taller than most ponies isn't an Alicorn trait, it has been seen in other ponies such as Trenderhoof and Fleur Dis Lee, the magical mane goes in favour of her being an Alicorn but may not be a trait that is limited to Alicorns just more common, also ponies having differing magic can occur amongst any pony, varying from magical specialisation to a wide range of magic types. I think that the season 4 finale disproves the idea of this character being an Alicorn as it was stated that Tirek didn't know that a 4th alicorn existed, this suggests that only 4 exist being Celestia, Luna, Cadance and Twilight. Welp, that's my two bits on the matter.

Does the book mention if she have wings, if not then she's not an alicorn.

Nope.

The book mentions that she is a unicorn.

As I said, Luna and Celestia have also been referred to as unicorns a few times.

There are only four alicorns in EQUESTRIA. Monacolt is a different country.

I don't think her having wings would be important to the story.

If they don't say that she have wings then she don't have them, and if she don't have wings (and a horn) then she isn't an alicorn.

You can't know for sure that she doesn't have wings just because they aren't mentioned. That's a logical fallacy. It's called appeal to ignorance. It's when you say that because something can't be disproved it must be true or likely.

Source?? I can't think of one moment where they were refereed to as unicorns.

You're joking right? I can say that Fluttershy is a changeling but that doesn't make it true.

I can't remember, but I'm pretty sure I heard them called unicorns at least once.
Don't bring up stuff if you can't back it up with evidence.

I wasn't saying it's LIKELY that Duchess Diamond Waves has wings. I'm saying that we can't say for sure that she doesn't when we don't have any proof of that either. Why don't they teach logic in these schools?

I'll try to find where I heard it.

Do you know what you didn't learn in your school?  Reading between the lines. If a character is called a unicorn and nobody says that she has wings, then she isn't a alicorn. She's a unicorn, is that so hard to understand?

FIM pilot. At the beginning legend of Nightmare Moon, Celesta's voiceover states that the elder sister used her "unicorn magic."

I just found where Luna was called a unicorn. It's in the beginning of the first episode. So there.

Oops, I posted at the same time yayayayayala posted.

That just proves that she's able to cast "unicorn" magic. It doesn't say that the elder sister is a unicorn.

If you're talking about the "unicorn" magic, then look above.

I was shocked at Duchess Diamond was a unicorn too, by the way, but she's definitely not an alicorn, though pretty much everything tells us she should be. Maybe it's writer's preference, or corporate meddling, but it is what it is.

That's actually an entirely different concept, considering we learned in Twilight's Kingdom that alicorn magic is different from unicorn magic. They're an amalgamation of the three tribes, therefore it's possible for them to have both.

it's also an entirely different concept from the race itself, which was still stated to be unicorn.

No, it didn't just say "unicorn magic". It said, "One fateful day, the younger unicorn refused to lower the moon to make way for the dawn." Don't believe me? Go watch it!

You're right. However there's proof that she's a alicorn. She has both wings and a horn, unlike Duchess Diamond Waves.

personally, I wouldn't fret over it. If she has traits (taller than most ponies, ethereal mane, only one to make waves in the sea), then it's likely that she's an alicorn. chapter book/ EQG/ IDW comic book/ toyline canon doesn't follow the show canon all that closely.

In "The Journal of the Two sisters", Celestia makes mention of being raised by other alicorns, along with her sister. So we know for sure there's (or has been) other alicorns somewhere. The toyline has also made two other alicorns that aren't seen in the show.

Unlike you?

You're the one who doesn't announce evidence against what you believe in.

I know that the book didn't SAY that she has wings. But just because they weren't mentioned doesn't mean they aren't there.

Even if I claim that Appeljack is part timberwolf doesn't make it true. Sure, you can't disprove it but you know that it isn't true.
