Is Pinkie a better friend than the Princess of Friendship?

I dare say- indubitably. And Pinkie's kidness, generosity, loyalty, and friendship Far exceeds Twilight's, as seen best in, in my opinion) Party Pooped. Pinkie shows that she puts massive amounts of efford, defcation, and thoughtful concern into the parties that she throws for her friends- literally every pony in town, far beyond the Mane 6 chique. She strives to make things perfect right down to always remembering what they like, so she can just bring them joy and make them smile. She literally goes to beyond the ends of Equestria to do just that, in spite of the unpleasant attitudes her potential friends might have.

Twilight, the Princess of Friendship pales in comparison, by her own examples which seem lacking. How many friends does she have beyond the Mane 6? Has she demonstrated the same lengths of kindness, dedication, generosity, loyalty, and laughter that Pinkie has shown to other ponies, and makes her life's work?

Where I think Pinkie's understanding of friendship falls flat is that she's always running balls to the wall (ahem), all cylinders, YOLO swag 420, etc... And that's not always how friends want to be treated. She's too aggressively friendly and in people's faces. We've seen how Pinkie's brand of friendship can fall flat, as an example I can recall Filli Vanilli (or however the crap that episode name was spelled) where she was often just scaring Fluttershy even more with her jokes and worry mongering. She means well, always, but Pinkie can be super insensitive, naive, and difficult to deal with. All of the girls have their strong and weak points, and Pinkie is no exception.

I think the situation is Twilight is more a scholar of friendship, whereas for Pinkie it simply comes naturally. I think Celestia chose Twilight to be her ambassador for this task over Pinkie because while Pinkie finds it very easy to make friends and works hard at it, she will never have the ability to be a wise ruler. In fact, a kingdom ruled by Pinkie might end up being a very scary place.  Twilight is still learning, and presumably eventually she will get right the ability to make wise decisions on how to make everyone friendlier with one another.

Also, as Little Black Dresh states above, Pinkie has serious personal space issues. Look at how she tried handling Cranky, even though it worked out in the end because she finally found Matilda for him. If Matilda hadn't been in town it would have been a disaster since all of Cranky's memorabilia would have been destroyed with nothing to replace it.

Twilight will make a decision for a friend or tell them what they hate to hear if it's for their own good. While I love Pinkie, I think she may not be as capable of that. Being a true friend can involve risking the friendship for the sake of that friend.

One is not better than the other, they just approach friendship in a different way. Pinkie is far more open and outgoing but that can be a bit brash as friendship sometimes takes a more subtle and more gentle approach, that is where I think Twilight succeeds at in this regard.

Friendship isn't just about making others laugh and giving them lavish parties. It's about understanding, reaching common ground, loyalty, commitment and other junk. A friend that tries so hard to impress you and do whatever you ask of them to do for you isn't a very stable relationship. Eventually you will become annoyed at such a person because that person is no longer an equal to you thus not a friend but your court jester.

I'm going to assume that you didn't read a word in the Op, because if you had, you'd have seen that I presented far more than parties an laughs to Pinkie's character and friendship with other ponies.

Hmm, I think Twilight would score higher on the honesty scale than Pinkie. As far as loyalty, they both would do a lot for their friends, although I think Twilight is less likely to let emotions get in the way, and she would do whatever is needed to be done (unless she has a mental breakdown). I think Pinkie would beat Twilight at Kindness and Generosity, she's always planning and setting up parties for everypony, and she never charges anything for it. Laughter, Pinkie wins hands down, but for Magic, Twi clearly wins that category.

Pinkie and Twilight are both equally good friends, but they approach the topic in different ways. Pinkie loves action; if a friend of hers was down, she'd throw them a party and try to make them laugh. Twilight would give advice or simply listen to them talk about their problems and vent.

Pinkie Pie's reason for being in her interactions with others is not to make new friends, but her desire to make others happy. This she does exceptionally well and when she does, making friends tends to follow.

Twilight is good at making new friends but tries to appeal to those she has just met on a general level, rather than on a personal or detailed level. While Twilight tries to tiptoe around things and get to know another gradually as they spend time together, Pinkie will try to get to know every detail about a pony right away. Sometimes this makes her come off as annoying (like to Cranky) but the end result always hits the mark.

She doesn't represent most of the things you mentioned. Giving people joy and happiness isn't going to fix their problems on the long term. There's this thing called tough love, that's not something Pinkie Pie is capable of, she just wants to see those smiles... she doesn't fix the problem behind those smiles.

If it was for you, you probably think Diamond Tiara is a better friend then Twilight Sparkle.

Twilight embodies all of the elements of friendship which is why she's a princess, but that doesn't mean she's always perfect at showing that element, nor, might I add, are the element bearers themselves. The Mane 5 aren't perfect either. Friendship is Magic and Twilight is the Element of Magic so she is literally friendship ponyfied.

One could argue that Rainbow Dash would be the true Princess of Friendship because she gave them all cutie marks with her sonic rainboom.

The point Twilight became Princess of Friendship is that even when everyone goes down and separates like in Return of Harmony and Magical Mystery Cure, Twilight is always trying to bring them back using her intelligence. The theme of Twilight being the main character is that to be a good friend you have to be smart. Being smart = making the right decisions.

Except that's what you did. All the examples you brought forward are things that were presented about Pinkie's dedication to parties and making ponies in general (not just her friends) happy when hosting a party for them. She loves parties, but that's also kind of what she does in general. It has nothing to do with friendship.

Yes, she will go down the ends of equestria for her friends, but Twilight has done the same in previous occasions too, such as following Spike during his journey to meet with the dragons, even pretending to be a dragon for his sake. This is also attributable to Rarity and Rainbow Dash since they were also there with him.

Sure, Twilight won't ever be able to throw a party for her friends and make them happy to the same extent as Pinkie can, but the key difference between Pinkie and Twilight is that when a friend needs help, Pinkie will try to catch the fish for the friend. Twilight will teach the friend how to fish so they will be able to do so for themselves in the future.

that's hardly the same at all! Twifollowed Spike out of worry of consequense. Pinkiegoes troufh great lengths to inow everything about her friends, far beynd parties, but just things to avoid or do to make them smile o or more comfortable in their own daily lives. Such as knowing not to prank Fluttershy to keep her comfortable, or showing the utmost concern for Raibow when she went to train with the Wonderbolts, or as she was trying to relax, in Too many Pinkie Pie's, how she en played quetly to not disturb her friend, or how she keeps files on everyone's likes and dislikes. Twilight on the other hand can't even read into poor Spike's- the very friend nand assistant she's been with since day 1- insecurities about feeling unloved and unappreciated, for Luna's sake! She doesn't even address the issue when he tells her how he's feeling and likely has been for a long time, in Princess Spike. Pinkie would have noticed right off the bat.

Welp, I think Pinkie answered my concerns, persnally, perfectly, in "Amending Fences"; chewing out Twilight for not knowing ponies or how to handle friendship issue, in spite of being the supposed Princess of Friendship

hail Princess Pinkie!

there are some aspects of her that I like, for the record

but that's neither here nor there

just point out how the most recent episode seemed to make crystal clear who is the better friend, is all.

answer in the OP

https://mlpforums.com/topic/123099-how-come-no-one-gets-mad-when-fluttershy-throws-rds-fears-in-her-face/?p=3554899

In adition, you're not never going to slip up when talking to your friends. That doesn't make you a bad friend, if you forget to monitor your word filter

Now, pressuring a friend into doing something you KNOW they aren't keen on, and purning your best friend into a bat, on the other hand....bad friend, indeed.
