Why did Sunbutt groom Twi if she's not going away? Twi befriending Starswirl?

What exactly was the point in grooming and watching over Twiligh to get her to make friends, discver a brand new type of magic that is stronger than Alicorn magic, and crown Twi princess, if Sunbutt isn't abandoning her throne and duties, and up and leaving, never to be heard from again? Yes, she probably did it for extra defense in Equestria, but since Sunbutt and Luna aren't connected to the elements, which have been put back in the tree of harmony, and Twilight learned how to raise the sun and moon in their absence, what role does Sunbutt really have, now, with Twilight and friends as the new guardians of harmony, with stonger magic than the Alicorns themselves, and with Twi knowing how to raise celestial bodies?

 

And while on the topic of Twiligh, by extension, does anyone ese think that the cutie map will eventually lead her to Starswirl, and somehow tech her cherished idol the importance of friendship?

Celestia isn't abandoning the throne. As a good leader though, she must prepare for any eventuality. If anything happens to her and Luna in the future, she wants to be sure Twilight will be in position to make sure Equestria remains safe.

Celestia hasn't shown her true power, ever. Sure, we've seen some, but I doubt that's the best. She also knows 1000x more than Twilight ever will, and no doubt has some pretty nasty spells tucked up in there. She's lived through so much, done so much, studied so much, she's very, very powerful. She knows things that would probably make the elements be defeated, not that she ever would! Plus Twilight had trouble moving the sun, and Celestia does that ever day probably not breaking a single sweat. If Twilight tried Luna or Celestia's jobs she'd fail, it'd prove much too difficult for her, even as strong as she is. Plus, she only gets magic stronger than Alicorn magic if the EoH all work together, and if all the Alicorn magic is combined well, we saw how powerful it is! Celestia rules the nation with Luna at her side. She's no doubt good at politics and what she does! Plus, we don't know much else, as there hasn't been much on Celestia/Luna. She's training Twilight for well, taking her job! But there will probably be six princess's, not just one or two. Though Luna's more equipped and going to take the throne if anything ever happens to Celestia, Twilight will probably one day become one of rulers.

 

I think she might find something of Starswirls, or come across some place that has a-lot of his stuff, but that's it.

Starswirls was the mentor of one of the founders of Equestria, so the chances of meeting Starswirl are extremely slim. But hey! Maybe there's a life-extension spell Starswirl knows.

Celestia is planning on going away and becoming one with the force, Yoda style, two episodes before the show's finale.

Celestia is the princess, she takes care of the political matters. Since she's been the ruler for over 1000 years in Equestria many areas of it has connections with her for several hundreds of years so if she falls all those areas will fall too so yeah she's still needed to keep the system from falling out of place.

Celestia and Luna are going to take a vacation and its up to Cadance and Twilight to oversee Equestria.. one day or week..

 

But with all seriousness, I think Celestia just wanted to keep tabs on Twilight, since she could (or already is) more powerful than herself and didn't want Twilight to be found by the evil side, like Tirek and the likes

She's probably just training her so that she can eventually take the throne, or in case something happens and she needs to take over. Also, I wouldn't say Twi learned how to control the sun and moon, she was lucky not crashing them on top of Equestria

I think Faust's original intent was to remove Celestia some way or another and have Twilight take her place. What we're seeing is the new writers deviating from that horrible old routine Celestia was probably really lonely for the last 1000 years, so this new age of alicorns everywhere is a much better idea than just repeating the cycle.

 

Of course, Celestia's first goal with Twilight was to rescue Luna. But she seems to have a sense for other ponies' destinies (perhaps related to her prophetic dreams), so it could be that she knew Twilight was meant to be a princess from the start. It was at least obvious that she'd have a strong connection to the elements of harmony, since her cutie mark matches the tree.

 

Cadance is another piece of the mystery, since she seems to be a reincarnation of the Crystal Princess that was presumably killed by Sombra 1000 years ago. And we still don't really know what ancient Canterlot was like either. How many alicorns were there?

If the shows overall plotline is to be considered it seems Celestia had some knowledge that shit was going to get serious in 1000 years time and that her sisters reappearance would the first sign (they even narrowed it down to the exact time and date!). Since Twilight was found; nightmare moon returned, the crystal empire reemerged along with Sombra, Crysallis invaded with a whole army, Discord broke free and Tirek went on a rampage.

 

All the events have occured in a space of 2-3 years in show after a peaceful 1000 years and it is in this time a new princess emerges... seems to be a rather nice coincidence doesn't it?

I'm not sure it was strictly Celestia's choice. We'll never know if she knew that Twilight was coming, but once she saw her raw power and her Cutie Mark matching the Tree of Harmony it was clear she needed to watch this filly closely.
