I think you'll see a lot of the developed nations using them.

I could see a similar concept being developed, though if I recall correctly VTOL aircraft use up a lot of fuel.

I also know that VTOL aircraft like the Harrier and Yak-38 have pretty limited roles due to mass restrictions.

It might also suffer a similar fate to the Mi-24, too many roles to fill (Troop transport, CAS, ATGM platform, etc)

You could say I'm a hardliner when it comes to the more traditional style of fixed wing vs rotary for CAS.

They're making it use energy as a source of fuel too but the fuel thing could be prove problematic. I don't think it'll be used a lot, more or less just to do quick escorts or support strikes. Basically replacing the current roles of jets and attack helicopters in the combat zone. And that Yak-38 is pretty interesting, never seen that aircraft before. I take the Yak-38 is the Russian take on vertical lift off aircraft?

Yes, developed for the Minsk and Kiev class light aircraft carriers/cruisers. They were very limited by their poor engines and were never deployed on the same scale as the harrier.

The Yak-141 would have been another Soviet VTOL design, but funding for that fell through, however some of the ideas taken from the 141 are now implemented on the F-35.

It's to bad the first version was a fail, did they copy the Harrier's design or use their own? Pretty interesting to see the Yak-141 being used to develop America's prized aircraft. But then again America has been taking design from everyone, a bit like the Chinese have been doing.

Pretty cool promotional Fighter Jet video.
