Just like the title says, could somepony please explain the plot line of Dr Who? I know there are a lot of seasons and a lot of Doctors, but I just need some basic understanding before I jump into the show. Thanks! :P

Growing tired of the Timelord's strict policy of noninterference, a renegade steals a TARDIS (Time and Relative Dimension in Space) Specifically, he steals an old Type 40 time capsule ready to be scrapped and strikes out to explore the universe. Along the way he makes many friends. Some travel with him for a time, as they fight evil wherever they may find it throughout the entirety of time and space.

This is just a very basic plot-line. The show has lasted for decades, with a 16 year break during the 1990's. The original show ran from 1963-1989, with the new series starting up again in 2005 to the present date. It would take page after page to give a detailed explanation of the show.

Beyond the basic idea that @@cuteycindyhoney has outlined, Doctor Who has been around for over fifty years in a variety of media beyond the TV shows. Comics, novels, TV movie, and a couple of actual movie-movies, and that doesn't include all the fan-created content. Not all of which is 'canon', but exactly what is and what is not is *very* vague, including what normally would be considered fan-created content. And that's done deliberately by the various show runners. Heck, there's lots of stuff in the show itself that isn't canon anymore, as that's one of the things with a time travel premise. Things get changed, events that once happened no longer did.

So if you have any specific questions we can see if we can help. Personally, I've been watching the show and collecting the stuff for over forty years, so I've got a metric shitton of information to share, but due to the volume it's hard to organize in a useful way. I'm better at answering specific questions. :)

Rule #1 - The Doctor Lies, so don't take anything he says too seriously, just in case he is.

Also, try not to ask too many questions when it comes to the plot. Ex.

Q. What year is this exactly?

A. The Future!

Just enjoy the sci-fi drama goodness.

Here's a question from another Whovian. Do you think Romana will (should) come back? I always thought she was cool. Both of her. When last seen, she wasn't even in our Universe, but in N-Space. Hopefully she missed out on the Time War. I know this has been dealt with in books and audio programs, but I haven't read/listened to any of those. I just know her from the show episodes.

I learned something today. I have never watched Dr. Who and thought it was a fairly recent phenomenon. I knew there were at least a couple generations but I had no idea it had been around for so long.

Romana was a great character, and I would love to see her again, but the current show has a weird track record on bringing forward stuff from the classic show. I'm not entirely convinced her character would survive the modernization process.

Romana II is my favorite. First Romana was cool, but kind of bossy. I think Lalla Ward has such a mischievous smile, too.
