What do you do when when you can't sleep?

I'm currently having trouble sleeping, which is what has brought up this topic!

I try to close my eyes and fake sleeping to try and lead my body into doing so, but that doesn't always work. Eventually I pass out, but it's always a pain when you have an thing to go to early in the morning.

I've always just put myself in different scenarios and let them play out. Mundane or fantastic, it gives my brain something to distract itself until suddenly it is morning again and I realize I have classes.

I take a walk around the house or outside, I find the night relaxing. I also eat or drink something, hot chocolate milk is great! The walking and the energy necessary to digest the food makes me tired, and easier to get into sleep.

I find that waking up earlier also helps you to sleep, because you will be more tired at night.

(edited)

I put my earphones in and listen to music. Preferably loud enough that I a slice quite a few years off of having good hearing.

Well I either build stuff with Lego or just listen to chilling music while lying in bed. The last thing you want to do is use electronics though since the blue light they give off actually makes you less sleepy. Being on them for a minute or so to put on music or change the volume is fine, but staring at a screen for long periods of time is horrible for trying to sleep.

I listen to quiet ambient music and if I catch myself to be thinking about anything I immediately stop.  I read somewhere (don't know how true it is) but if you can stay completely still for about 7-15 minutes then your body will automatically fall asleep, so try closing your eyes and not moving your body.

I know this sounds silly but i lay in bed and get really comfortable and then i wiggle my toes on one foot. It actually rids my body of lingering energy and wakefulness. It takes my mind off distractions so i can wind down. Before i know it, im sleepy. Sounds weird but it works for me.

I just fire up my iPad and watch random YouTube videos. I'll usually end up watching a few hours worth of fails, reaction videos, and just random things XD

My solution is not one I recommend. If I can not sleep, I simply stay up until I become tired enough to fall asleep.

That's pretty much what I do.  I've had a lifelong battle with insomnia.  I also don't adhere well to a 24-hour day, so my schedule creeps around the clock until my body rejects sleep altogether, and agonizing chaos insues with my body until I pass out from total brain shutdown.  It's no fun being me.

I read stuff on Fimfiction. I rarely read mlp fanfiction because I never have time, so doing it at night when I can't sleep is perfect for me.

Besides that, I watch a movie, TV show, or something on YouTube until I get tired.

I tend to close my eyes and create scenarios. Sometimes, they end up in my novels. I know, it's weird, but when it's quiet and dark, my creativity seems to go haywire.

I am usually doing one of 4 things:

Watching videos while having a late night snack, browsing zé forums and posting, listening to mucin or just laying there and pondering my thoughts. I pretty much have to be tired in order to properly fall asleep, I cannot force myself or it will usually end up with one of the four scenarios above.
