Do you honestly think the brony fandom should never be criticized or mocked?

Recommended Posts

Sometimes, the fandom itself is a faulty one, faulty enough to become its own barrel of laughs and even a show of its own, if possible. From clumsy, cringeworthy bronies to drama and overreactions over pointless things (such as Equestria Girls and how certain toys appear), such episodes can be entertaining to watch.

And there are also some bronies who will immediately attempt to defend the show if anyone dares criticize, troll, or mock it, and they would even launch attacks against such people who are responsible. These very "defenders" would end up bringing in even more attackers instead in the process, and some of their fellow fans to leave the fandom (invoking more of their wasterful wrath).

So, in light of all this, do you honestly think that it is alright to enjoy mocking the fandom and the show, or do you think the furious "defenders" are right, in that any form of mockery or criticism against both is downright wrong?

Criticism is always fine. Though criticizing the whole fandom is a bit silly. There's a lot of bronies, with a lot of different personalities. It's not like we can all somehow police everything everyone does.

If by "Mocking" you mean just joking around in good fun and not being serious, no problem. It's good to laugh at yourself sometimes. If you mean serious insulting to be cruel? Well, people are going to do that no matter what, and they have the right to free speech and all that. They shouldn't be surprised if people react negatively to that though, since they're kinda being jerks.

I prefer to not make fun of the fandom, but is that really much of a bad thing to do so? That is not to say that I don't agree with the fandom, and sometimes the drama can get a little too much or out of hand. But frankly, drama happens in many other fandoms. It's not unusual. I most certainly don't get defensive over people who attack them, however, as flamewars always felt rather petty to me.

But really, I'd rather do whatever fun and crazy thing the fans are doing rather than criticise them all the time. I certainly won't be a fan forever, so I want to make up my time by having fun instead of being too serious.

Personally, I think it's a sign of a healthy mentality when either an individual or a group, bronies included, can take the odd jibe and even have their own laughs at themselves. Everything has its ridiculous points, MLP included as you pointed out, and I don't think there's anything wrong with being happy and secure enough in what you associate with, ridiculous included, to not feel like you have to be on the defensive.

I don't believe in mocking to hurt, but if someone makes a cutting remark, if it was made in good humour and with honest intention, that's fine by me!

I think it should be mocked because I think it's funny.

I have a tendency to make fun of/criticize plenty of fandoms I'm a part of, and the MLP fandom is no exception. Lets face it, not every fandom is perfect, and they'll usually have those people or moments that just drive you absolutely nuts. Though I think it's worth noting that people shouldn't generalize because, of course not everyone acts the same

And like I've said before, if fans can't learn to laugh at themselves or take a few jabs every once in a while, then they need to grow thicker skin

You can always criticize people in the fandom, but like what @ said, it's ridiculous to police a fandom. Call out bad attitudes by people within it, but criticizing it altogether is generalizing, which is no worse than stereotyping.

That said, there's nothing objectively funny about mocking any fandom, and bronies are no exception. To troll the fandom and the people within it is to be a cyberbully, and that's not okay. Trolling can hurt, and trolling can kill. Anyone who believes otherwise is advocating bullying.

A lot of the criticisms are quite warranted. The fandom at times can get very aggressive, stubborn and predictable. This extends to everyone, not just the 4chan offshoots of the fandom that allow their content to proliferate where its not welcome.

If the fandom wants to remain strong and grow, it has to be willing to acknowledge its flaws and mistakes, correcting and learning from them. Too often the fandom tries to play the victim card, while branding most or all of its critics as "haters."

Why shouldn't it be mocked? We're kind of a dumb fandom (In the nicest possible way of putting it >.<) at times.

The people that lash out and go mental at the slightest thing making fun of the fandom are honestly worse than the people making fun of the fandom a lot of the time. I can kind of accept people thinking we're weird, don't really appreciate people going mental and proving them right >_>

(I mean obviously there's taking the piss and then being an actual arse. That generally shouldn't be done but its hardly going to stop xD)

I don't really see a reason to mock or criticise us as a whole.... Hate the show not the viewers meng.

LOL, as if a buch of over 20 years dudes liking a show of ponies would be free from being mocked  . Sadly. my previous statement make common "fandom defenders" behavior would bring even more attackers than other fandoms. Just compare the defenders of Castlevania, the conservationist of the classics vs Lords of Shadow is mostly an inside conflict, but due  to MLP having fame for being girls-only, it'll also brings outside attackers

Sure. The fandom is made of up people, and sometimes people do things worthy of criticism. God knows the pony fandom isn't perfect. We generate our own drama all the time.

The problem is that people often criticize us simply because we exist, which is dumb.

Actually people tend to hate the show because the fans. That goes for a lot of shows and fandom.

I see this reason all the time, including here, and it's incredibly pathetic. If anyone should hate the show, do so because of the quality. To use the fans, even if it's minor, is to scapegoat. Any brony who scapegoats the fans for any reason (including hating the show and becoming a brony separatist) aren't fans of the product, period.

It is true that constructive criticism is one of the keys to growth; it is also true that raw hatred is one of the keys to unnecessary suffering.

Don't find it offensive, personally, but it worries me that there's people that falls within this harmful behaviours, troubled people in most cases. Do you really think a healthy person would spend time mocking at some else?

Whatever be the case and subject, they often show violence and bitterness in their action, fear and frustration. It's nocive for themselves and others. Not the way to face your life issues. I know that myself, very well.

Personally, don't care about defending anything about this fandom, the show, nor even myself. Why? Because I'm sure about myself, and Love it!

Some bronies are crazy, but it doesn't mean all of us deserve to be treated like trash. I'm a Southern American, so should I be treated like I'm uneducated and racist? No? Then an entire fandom shouldn't be treated based on how some fans act.

I don't think any fandom is beyond reproach. There may be things that can be criticized at times.

No.  I have seen some pretty horrible stuff in the brony community that deserves to be mocked and frowned upon.  I don't think they should be personally harassed or attacked, though.

Well everything has to have Criticism and our fandom which is the Brony Fandom is no expection to that rule. Only neutral criticism should be used against the fandom and mockery should not be allowed as it could hurt anyone in the fandom.

To be honest, I can see how non-bronies mock us after seeing what some of the bronies do.
